Power steering suddenly quit working while driving! after researching issue on internet, escapes have had several recalls on different model years involving steering., but not my 2009. it is obvious the problems with the steering has been going on many years but ford has not corrected. if my son had been driving when it went out, i shiver to think what may have been the outcome. steering issues are very serious safety problems. come on ford fix the escapes issues.

Steering wheel began shaking while the vehicle was stopped and at low speeds while driving in rush hour traffic. the shaking stopped for 1 day - then began again. two days following the dashboard sensor read - power steering assist fault. power steering failed at this time. i contacted ford - as i believe this to be directly related to a large recall 14s05 1.3m vehicles. ford courtesy cas9191445. ford has denied this is related to the recall - advising this vehicle vin does not match the referenced vin's- however i am experiencing the noted issues. what assistance can the nhtsa provide adding this vehicle into the recall. i contacted local ford dealerships in hope of receiving assistance/guidance - this also was unsuccessful. ford has referenced tsb no. 14-0016

Significant vibration in the steering wheel and intermittent loss of power steering. although the vehicle was covered by recall 14s05, ford is unwilling to replace the torque sensor because they "reprogrammed" it and closed out the recall in august 2014, which they claim fixed the problem. obviously, it did not fix the problem.

While driving the escape the steering wheel just locks up in the middle of driving. i have to get the escape to the side of the road and shut it off and restart to get the steering wheel to unlock. have taken it to a ford dealership and they say it's not on recall so they cant fix it. they did clean the wires and said it should be fine, but it still did it again.

My 2009 ford escape on jan 29,2016 went to dealer for oil change service man turned key for mileage a message read power steering assist fault he said i wonder why this is showing? he fiddled with a few buttons and dismissed it. left car for oil change returned picked up went to apt. for front brakes and tire rotation left driving about 10 miles per hour suddenly felt a shaking in steering wheel then loss of power steering nearly ran into a curb got control drove to near auto store looked for fluid stick was not one, went back to dealership told them my power steering just went out? they said we never heard of this before? another service man came listened said he had a truck in a month ago same thing cost customer $1500 i was shocked left went home my wife suggested i go to a auto mechanic a block from us i did he did research while i was there, he found a recall in 2014 for 2008-2011 ford escapes for power steering loss. i went back to dearlership took the print out of safety recall they did something on their computer found they had done a computer reprograming in aug 2014 and sorry the recall for us was closed. i did not receive a letter but the service dept in aug 2014 when having a regular oil change they performed this reprogramming for this recall which after now leaves me unable to get help. they recently explained since they did their duty at that time and found nothing than that closed the safety recall for our faulty power steering now gone. i asked them what if you had not done that reprograming in aug 2014 and now my power steering gone would i now be able to get it fixed under the recall he said yes! this seems to me like a scam to all their customers, they knew exactly the problem and knew i may have a loss later on and covered their a ss es . they have quoted me $1300 to replace steering column, rack, tierods. the owner of the dealership said to c

I received a recall notice number 14s05 involving the power steering, i took the car into brian motors in everett washington on december 16, 2015. recall was taken care. i had no problem prior taking it into the dealer. approximately 2 weeks later i experienced problems with the steering. i returned the vehicle to brian motors in everett washington and was told that the power steering column assembly needed to be replaced. this was one of the repair options listed in the recall. i was then informed that ford had closed the recall and the price of the repair would be approximately 1500$ . after calling ford costumer service in dearborn and being told again that i would be responsible for the repair because the recall had been closed. i have since found out that many owners of this year and model escape have experienced identical problems and received the same response from ford. i believe that there is a defect in the power steering column on 2009 ford escapes and it is fords responsibility to correct the problem. i believe that this could pose a risk of accident to anyone driving this car and that ford needs to address this immediately.

Before 6/18/15 randomly while driving any speed my vehicle had a wrench warning light illuminate and loses complete power along with steering, the car shuts off completely you have to turn ignition off and restart. it would run fine for several days and then randomly happen again or possibly multiple times in a day. 6/17/15 - i brought vehicle to ford dealership to fix recall (13n03) ' tech replaced throttle body for this correction. at the same time they also performed a recall (14s05) ' tech reprogrammed pscm for correction. 11/24/15 ' was driving my vehicle when the wrench light came on again and the whole steering column froze up. had to stop and turn vehicle off in traffic and back on. no correction to problem the vehicle was immediately brought back to ford dealership. 11/25/15 ' i was told the torque sensor needs replaced. i advised them the recall was not properly fixed the first time. i was informed that part is not under warranty according to ford service cite. 11/27/15 ' the torque sensor as indicated on their diagnostic testing and replacement of this part failed to fix the problem with the steering being locked up. service tech contacted ford hotline to try and figure out why the problem was not addressed with replacement of the part that indicated as the issue. 11/30/15 ' ford service technicians had to work with ford hotline to troubleshoot vehicle. they said now my whole steering column would need replacement. ford said i needed to pay for both parts (which did not fix any problem) and labor. i refuse to pay for any parts. my vehicle has been at dealership with this issue so long my tags are now dead. my car needs a safety inspection and service manager said they could perform the safety inspection and just electronically put the 'passed' information into the system. vehicle is not safe and is still at dealership to date.

Several times upon starting my 2009 escape, the power steering would not work. it was like trying to steer the car when it was not started. after shutting the vehicle off and re-starting several times, the power steering would then work properly. a ford dealer said that the only fix for this problem was to replace the steering column. even though my vehicle had less than 36,000 miles on the odometer, ford would not cover the cost. i decided to have the problem repaired for fear that the power steering would quit while driving. i had to pay $1137.07 out of pocket to fix the problem. i am the original owner of the escape

A few times in the past week i have driven my vehicle straight from a parked location only to find i have no power steering 40-50 yards into the trip. this has almost caused an accident. when i pull over and shut off the vehicle, the problems usually goes away, or goes away after several shutdown cycles. my vehicle was part of recall 14s05, and received a software update in 2014. since then the steering has been noticeably different and sometimes shaky when braking at highway speeds. even worse, ford is not honoring the recall. i went into a dealership today and they informed me the recall was closed out and there was nothing they could do free of charge, even though much of what i've read from this investigation is that the software update only pushed off the problem and did not fix it. i am very certain the problem is a torque sensor based on the discussion here. it appears ford has no care in fixing a critical safety problem, and is in fact, trying to cover it up with software and passing it off as usual wear and tear.

My ford escape electronic power steering has been acting erratically. it seems to work fine sometimes, but then turns off at other times. this makes it extremely hard to turn the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 60 mph, the steering ability seized. the contact pulled over to the side of the road. the vehicle was started again and the power steering returned to normal. the contact called the dealer who performed a software update on the vehicle and was advised to call headquarters. the vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified. the vin was invalid. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

2009 ford escape power steering failure. this occurs while driving at all speeds with no warning and also on start up of the vehicle. vehicle was serviced under ford safety recall 14s05 and torque sensor was replaced and the epas software reprogrammed. exact same symptoms of power steering failure have recurred, this time diagnosing as power steering control module needing replacement and thus the entire steering column. ford has declined to service vehicle under safety recall 14s05 due to the torque sensor already being replaced. the power steering control module is, however, listed under the safety recall. i was told by the local dealership that did the original recall work and ford customer representatives that this is now not covered under the recall because of the torque sensor already being replaced under the same recall. however, prior work done under the recall was inadequate in solving the issues.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while operating the vehicle, the low air valve sensor indicator illuminated, indicating that one of the tires experienced low air pressure. moments later, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was towed to the local dealer (jones ford, 2410 ocean hwy 17 south, supply, nc) where it was diagnosed that the steering pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 154,000. *tt*jb

Vehicle was subject to ford recall #14s05 which dealt with a torque sensor in the steering column. at the time we took it in there were no codes reported so the dealer performed the recommended service and reprogrammed the software. approximately a month later my wife experienced a power steering failure on the way to work. we took the vehicle to the dealer who found the code for the torque sensor and replaced it but this did not resolve the issue. after consulting ford it was recommended to replace the entire steering column. i was advised by my dealer that the initial recall work did not fix the issue and this was the needed repair but that it would not be covered since they had performed the initial recommended repair(reprogramming of the software). at this point even my dealer agrees that the initial fix is inadequate and it should be a complete replacement of the steering column but ford will no longer honor the recall since it was "fixed" once.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering sensor and steering column had to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the onboard diagnostic warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle experienced a loss of power. the dealer stated that the mass air index was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. in addition, the maintenance warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle experienced a loss of power. the vehicle was repaired, but the abs, low tire pressure, traction control, and parking warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired again. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 169,000. updated 10/18/16*lj *tr

Power steering has gone out three times without any warning. the car was in motion each time the power steering went out. twice on the highway and once backing out of the driveway. service center at mullinix ford in mobile, al said it was an electronic problem and would cost $698 plus tax to fix the problem. doing research, i see there are several complaints concerning this same problem and ford is not concerned with the safety of its car owners. i have been a ford car owner my entire life and this makes me wonder why!

The power steering stopped working while driving on a city street. i was turning into a shopping mall and there was suddenly no way i could steer this car. it is dangerous to try driving the vehicle. you cannot turn it without brute force and it is impossible to steer at slow speeds. it is definitely a safety issue. the problem is a torque sensor which when it goes out, the entire steering column must be replaced to the tune of $1500. ford should take responsibility for this issue before too many owners end up in crashes.

I own a 2009 ford escape. there was a very large recall on the steering column a couple years back, as the steering column would randomly freeze and you had very little control over your car. i had this issue. i almost got into a serious wreck during one of these freezing episodes when i was making a slow turn onto a road in atlanta, ga. the recall said to bring in the car to a local ford dealership, and they would either do a re-set on the computer, or replace the steering column if deemed necessary. originally, they re-set the computer. it happened one time after the computer reset, but i figured it was just a fluke. almost a year later... the same issue started happening more frequently, again, and within 2 days, the electronic steering was completely gone. i lost all power steering ability. it went out completely. i brought it back in to gwinnett place ford, and the "service" center said the recall had expired, and i would have to pay for a steering column out of pocket ($1,400). i had no choice but to pay out of pocket... even though there was not an expiration date on the recall. ford hq stated that the dealership could have replaced it free of charge (instead of the $1,400 they made me pay) and then just sent the recall and the bill to ford hq for a refund. gwinnett place ford blamed it all back on ford hq for an "expired" recall. per the recall letter, they should have replaced my steering column free of charge....they did not.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while in reverse, the power steering failed. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 73,000.

Takata recall i was driving in the far left lane of the freeway on my way to work and my car shut off, sometimes my cars does not start. i have had alternator, starter tested, and they are good, my camshaft sensor replaced, ignition switch replaced, spark plugs replaced, i keep a good handle on maintenance up, but my car shutting off while i am driving and sometimes don't turn on at all is keep happening, my steering wheel locks up, very hard to turn, all components in my car don't come on, gears light pops on and off, dashboard light sometime flickers. i have had my back lights. and it continues to happen. *tr

In february of 2015 i took my vehicle into al piemonte's arlington heights ford in arlington heights, illinois because our power steering had been going out intermittently while driving. they said it just needed a computer update relating to recall 14s05. last weekend the power steering went out completely and never came back on. there was no warning, no indicator light or sound as referenced in recall 14s05. i reluctantly drove it into the closest dealership, golf mill ford in niles, illinois. to be proactive, i called ford customer care at 800-392-3673 and explained what was going on. they created a "case for me" and said to wait to hear from the service manager at the dealership. he called me last evening and said that ford won't honor the recall because it had been "cleared" and they wouldn't cover any portion of the repair which will be around $1200 (to replace the steering column assembly). i've had to get a rental vehicle as well. i called ford customer care last night and asked how they made that decision. the agent said it was the warranty department but they only will speak with the dealership. i asked for a supervisor or manager and they said no was was available. i asked if i could get a call back from one and the agent said his system went down so there was nowhere to save the information. today i called ford customer care again and explained in detail specifically that if i hadnt brought it in back in february they would be honoring this recall. also the update done in february did not even work.there was no indicator light or sound when power steering went out.

Power steering failure: following the first occurrence (14 aug 2015) there were several other instances within the next couple of days whereby i lost power steering again and had to revert to manual steering. nine months ago ( 10 dec 2014) i had my car serviced at ford's expense for their recall 14s05 that related to their "electrical power steering" defect which only amounted to a computer code reprogram. then on august 26, 2015, after several more failures, i had my car serviced for the power steering failure in which case the steering column assembly and the housing had to be replaced at my expense which i didn't think was fair. recall 14s05, to me, was a quick fix which did not address the root of the problem. an attempt to have ford accept responsibility was not successful and i had to pay for the service which was quite expensive. i am hoping for a recall concerning this defect since i have read many more complaints (same problem) from other drivers with the same make and model and if so, qualify for reimbursement. thank you for your time *tr
