Recently reported STEERING problems on 2009 Ford Escape

The steering wheel binds upon engine start. when i turn it off and turn it back on it binds and goes into manual mode and it's hard to steer. if i turn it off and turn it back on, half the time it fixes itself and half the time it doesn't. it makes it really unsafe to drive because the wheel is really hard to turn. i have trouble steering and cannot control the vehicle the way i need to. we contacted ford to see if there was a recall but we were told there wasn't. i believe there should be a recall for this because it is dangerous and not safe to drive.

It was a heavy rainy night when windshield wipers started acting up with their rhythm making it hard to see through a slightly blurred windshield then windshield & sunroof starts leaking water all over me,inside the front light switch, down into floor boards plus all in the seats !! if that wasn't enough i was slowing down to go around a few curves when brakes acted like they didn't want me to stop scary. key is hard & sticky feeling to turn in ignition cylinder therefore making the ignition switch not being able to catch any voltage at all to start the engine..after a million tries it'll finally start.. it still leaks, very hard to start & replacing brakes again...

My ford's vin# [xxx]. my 2009 ford escape the power steering failed on my way to work. i stopped at a light and the power steering failed. it seems to fail after driving a certain amount of miles. the steering wheel becomes hard to turn and you need to turn the car off and back on to resume power steering. i called ford customer service and they will not do anything for me. i'm very surprised that this is a know issue and ford wont do anything to help its customers. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The steering wheel on our 2009 ford escape started shaking constantly and there's a warning showing "power steering assist failure." we took it to our local ford dealer. they determined it was an issue covered under a recall and we scheduled a service appointment for repair. when we took it in for the appointment, they then told us it wasn't a recall and we would have to pay to have it repaired. we didn't continue with the repair at that time. we researched the problem and found there was a recall issued on 05/29/14, nhtsa campaign #14v284000, ford recall #14s05. we owned the vehicle at that time of the recall and were never notified. i contacted ford customer service regarding the issue, but the only resolution they offered was that we would have to resolve the issue with our ford dealer, which won't fix the problem under recall. we took the vehicle to an independent repair shop and asked them to conduct a diagnostic check on it without telling them the background. they performed the check and determined it was the exact same problem and recall we were already aware of. they provided us with the recall documentation and advised us to go to the ford dealership and they should repair the problem due to the previous recall. could someone please provide us assistance or advice in getting our vehicle repaired under this recall? we're fearful of driving the vehicle due to the potential loss of steering loss and don't understand how ford is refusing to repair a clearly obvious recall issue. thank you. *tr

There has been multiple issues with this ford escape xlt. the abs light continues to come on. the wheel of the car locks when you try too turn when driving wheel. it is very dangerous. the sensors even though we replaced them keep blowing which causing the truck to decline in speed while driving in traffic. we had to turn it onto to the grass to avoid accidents. constant engine issues after we had it fixed multiple times. we are in a financial negative because of this truck. the tire sensors keep going also. these issues are happening after we have gotten this truck fixed multiple times and more dangerously while we are driving it. the brakes, steering wheel, transmission an the engine are all faulty. we have put thousands of dollars into the this vehicle. this is our transportation to work and we are behind with the notes. even when the vehicle is stationary there is a grinding, almost like the wheels want to fall off. we need this fixed we need help!!!!!

2009 ford escape has a sensor failure and turned off power steering assist while driving and in motion on a street. the steering suddenly became very hard to steer at a time when i did not expect this. there was a recall on this failure a few years ago and the failure has happened again. why is ford have software issues that are allowed to turn off critical systems (safety) such as steering because of any sensor failure. this system should fail safe and never be turning off systems such as steering or braking!!!! they should only be allowed to monitor or assist areas such as steering or braking but any failure should never turn off those systems; it is a serious safety hazard while driving!!! *tr

14s05. i was driving the 2009 ford escape on the highway at approx. 70mph. the steering will stopped controlling the vehicle correctly and then the steering went completely out. i almost crashed, pulled onto the shoulder of the highway, gathered myself, cut on the hazard lights and cut the auto off. after a minute, i started the auto up again and moved forward to see if the problem still existed. the power steering was back in but it was very very loose. when i got it home i informed my mother that it needed to be looked at. she called the ford hotline and they told her that the recall on her vehicle was closed but if the steering went out, that it was covered by the recall. she took it to the dealer that ford told her too and they said they would repair it. she left the vehicle over night to be fixed but the next day they told her that it wasn't a recall and that she had to pay $89 for the diagnostic test that she didn't know she had to pay. they still refuse to help in any kind of way at all. my mother is in her mid 70's with a fixed income. it's impossible for her to come up with $2000. https://www.facebook.com/fordwonthonorrecall14s05/ *tr

The vehicle is losing power steering suddenly while in the midst of left hand turns. the car suddenly beeps, no warning light appears, and for 1-2 seconds the steering wheel feels completely locked up. apparently this is due to a failing torque sensor, as the dealership reports that it is showing code b2278. the faulty torque sensor is a known safety issue with ford escapes, part of recall 14s05. but, rather than fix the problem (from what i can tell they freely acknowledge the original torque sensors were defective, and the new parts are of an improved, more durable, and safer design), ford is only issuing a software update. apparently i had this software update completed in 2014, and yet here i am with the same mechanical safety issue two years later. the software update, as far as my research reveals, does nothing to actually improve the safety of the vehicle, it just makes the car beep when it loses power steering. there are apparently 740,878 vehicles affected by this issue, which means nearly a million unsafe ford escapes and mercury mariners are driving around the country with defective steering controls that could fail at any point mid-turn. ford motor company needs to actually fix the problem (with part replacement) before too many people are injured or killed! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel failed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

There was a recall for this model of the 2009 ford escape for a steering issue. they did not honour the recall, even though the dealer explained how dangerous of a problem this lack of electric steering was causing. i had to pay for an expensive repair out of my own pocket. the problem was that the electronic steering assist would stop functioning while the car was in motion, this caused heavy vibrations of the steering wheel and a lack of power steering.

2008-2011 ford escape power steering recall 14s05 i received a recall letter from ford motor company concerning a recall on the electronic power steering on my 2009 ford escape. i scheduled an appointment with winner ford of cherry hill, nj for this service, since it was the closest dealer at the time i was able to return vehicle for service. the dealership performed the software upgrade citing that no problems were found. as of november 28th 2016, my steering system has begun to exhibit problems from this recall, the steering wheel while both idle and driving shakes and vibrates which causes the vehicle to swerve and makes parking difficult. i contacted ford customer care regarding this, however i was informed that since the recall work of updating software was performed, that they considered the issue with my vehicle resolved and no additional service would be performed under the 14s05 recall, however at my own costs could have the vehicle re-evaluated at a dealership and at my own cost have the proper service performed to remedy any issued they may find. wheel shaking and turning slightly on its own occurs while both stationary and driving on both city streets and highways, issue stops while turning but returns while wheel is not being moved. *tr

My torque sensor is going out and having power steering issues ford has denied there is a recall and claims it has gotten fixed in 2014 but if it was fixed why would i be having this problem now? i never received a notice about the steering recall. *tr

Steering shaft torque sensor malfunction. the car become hard to steer, or to turn the wheel

My wife was making a left turn from a stop, the electric power assist in the steering quit working, and she had to fight the steering wheel hard to keep from running into the curb. we wonder why our vehicle's vin is not listed in the recall for this ford escape problem?

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle lost power steering. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was informed that the vehicle experienced the same failures as nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 112,000.

My power steering quit due to a sensor error.. after i drove to shopping center and parked i got a power steering assist fault error, i tried starting it up again i have no power steering. i have tried shutting down and starting car back up and still now power steering.. i have read up on this and seen there are recalls for my year and make and model of car, but my vin does not show there is one. would like to have this issue resolved as of now i am not driving my car. *tr

My 88 year old mother drives this steering went out as she was driving it does this when it wants to. ford charged us $123 to tell us its the steering column sensor and wants $1,500 to fix she doesn't have. seems this is a huge problem ford doesn't want to fix. 40,000 mile vech that had ever service done at ford and its not safe to drive now.

I was driving my vehicle and a warning came across my dashboard that said.. power steering assist failure. i pulled over and shut my car off to see what was going on. when i turned my car back on, my power steering was gone. i had my vehicle in the dealership in 2014 for a warranty on my sway bar and the dealership saw there was a recall notice so they plugged my car into the computer and had no codes or anything so they reprogrammed it. now i'm having trouble with the power steering and code b2278 is coming up and neither the dealership nor the ford motor company will take care of it. they told me that i didn't have an issue with it back in 2014 so the recall was closed and now that i am having the issue, they can not fix it or take care of it. the ford motor company told me it was not their problem because the recall was closed due to me not having an issue with it 2 years ago. i had to drive my car home which is about 20 miles with no power steering what so ever. *tr

Power/electric steering went out while my wife was driving. i took it to the local ford dealership which originally said there was a recall, then there was not a recall for my particular vehicle because it came from a different manufacturing location, later, the ford tech said that there was, in fact, a recall on my car, but the window for the recall was over two years ago. *tr

Power steering eps assist steering torque sensor (pscm) went out. nhtsa #14v284000. ford recall 14s05. purchased 12/14 at brandon ford (fl). not ever informed of recall. actually texted that they did not know of recall. called ford who put a case # on it. review done by ford but they said brandon ford did a test on it and reprogrammed the sensor. ford denied the claim stating it had been 12 months or 12,000 miles since purchase. the vehicle only had 18,800 miles at purchase and has approximately just over 32,000 miles now. on fords service phone line where one goes directly to the specific recall there is no mention of not honoring the full replacement of parts and labor dependent on if it is under 12 months or 12,000 miles. neither does it state that in the online recall info. the cost for this repair we have been told is some $1300. the car is sitting at autonation ford in panama city, florida right now. the service manager and the assistant to the general manager at brandon ford are not returning calls and voicemessages. this has been a fiasco with ford. my daughter or anyone else could be seriously injured or worse and it states such especially at low speeds on the ford recall recording line message yet nothing is being honored or done. luckily she was stationary in a driveway and the car was in park when the failure occurred instead of on a street, highway or interstate.

Started car, went to back out of parking space and there was no steering. pulled back into space and turned car off, popped hood to see if i could see anything wrong. waited a few minutes, started car again, steering was fine. notice i did not get hood down all the way, so i pulled over, turned off car, and secured hood. when i got back in the car, lost steering again. turned off car, steering worked again. made it home. waited a few minutes after turning car off, and restarted it. again no steering. took brute force to turn wheel. at no time did a warning light come on indicating any trouble.

Vehicle no power and surging.

No warning that something was wrong. was told it could have happened on the highway at a high rate of speed. which would have made it impossible to steer and could have caused life threatening injury of possibly death. the car was parked on friday, sat over the weekend and when i went in to start it on monday and drive it to work the steering wheel was hard to move and the tires stayed stationary. towed it to the dealer and was told the steering column broke and needed to be replaced and it wasn't under warranty anymore and the recall that is out there was not applicable for this specific problem with the steering column. they dealer said it would cost approx $1,400.00 to replace the steering column. it was never in an accident and was never part of theft. it is 9 years old, never towed anything and not driven hard.

My electronic assisted power steering started malfunctioning in6/16, iot would reset itself some at first but by 7/16 it totally quit. i took it to a mechanic who was unable to repair it, took it back to the place i purchased it, their computer wouldn't talk to mine. i then took is to w w ford dealer in searcy, ar where they advised it was a recall computer update that they had already performed last year when the fuel system quit & had to be updated. they refused to look at it, refused to hook it up to their diagnostics computer and i've been stuck "strong arm steering since.
