Recently reported STEERING problems on 2009 Ford Escape

In the past two months the power steering began to stop operating intermittently. took it to dealership 2 times and they could not find the problem. finally on oct 24 the power steering failed to operate completely. it is being repaired at a cost of over 1000. since only some of the 2009 escapes were recalled in 2014, and mine was not included, i believe ford should recognize this problem and recall my vehicle. this is a serious moving safety hazard. there is a major defect in the steering which can happen at any time.

Power steering failed while driving sat highway speeds approx 70mph, and resulted in crossing lane into opposing traffic, nearly causing head-on collision. dealership claims no knowledge of this being a problem with this model of vehicle. internet search indicates this has been a recall issue in the past. ford will not resolve issue through recall, and repair is very expensive.

Power steering would not engage when the car was started. worked fine after restarting the car for 1 day. next day, power steering disengages after about 10 sec every time and will not come back with restarting the car. this is a known problem with a quick google search that ford continues to ignore.

tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that after restarting the vehicle, the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but the cause of the failure was not determined. the manufacturer and local dealer interstate ford of miamisburg, oh. were both notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 113,000.

Immediate steering failure of the electronic steering with no notice or warning. steering was working fine in the morning but upon starting the car in the afternoon, there was no power steering. there is a recall for this issue but it does not appear my car was included in the recall. the recall should be expanded as this is a known and widespread issue with this vehicle.

Car serviced for recall 14s05 this august for power steering fault. same issue: lost power steering assistance and drop back to manual mode happen oct. 16th. ford refused to fix the issue under the same recall.

Loss of power steering while driving. it will turn off without warning making it very difficult to control car

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the steering column seized and required excessive effort to turn the steering wheel. in addition, the power steering and brake warning indicators illuminated. mac haik ford (10333 katy fwy, houston, tx 77024) diagnosed that the power steering assembly would have to be replaced. the failure was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

The power steering fails and you are forced to turn without it. but it is not only without it, it feels as if the steering if fighting against you. then at random times the power steering will start to work again. it makes it difficult because you do not know how the car will react.

Loss of powering steering in vehicle going 55 mph on a busy highway. no engine lights or safety signals appeared on the dash when this occurred, there was absolutely no warning. luckily, i was not in a serious accident when the loss of power steering occured and i was able to take the vehicle to the dealership to have it looked at. at this point they said the recall should have fixed everything regarding the electrical powering steering issue, but now that the recall has been closed there is nothing they can do and i am now responsible to have the power steering column replaced. when the vehicle was taken in the recall initially, it took them 2 minutes to complete the check list checking for dtcs and to reprogram the pscm and instrument cluster. the customer information sheet posted with the safety recall bulletin was never give to me even though all dealership service management should have provided a copy to those who only had reprogramming completed on their vehicle.

Sudden loss of power steering assist even after the recall reprogramming. we previously took the vehicle in for recall number 14s05 in aug. 2014. trouble codes were not found at that time so the dealer only did a reprogramming which was designed to prevent the loss of power assist and alert the driver with a warning light and chime if it did occur. our vehicle had a complete loss of power steering assist while driving on 9/24/17 but there were no driver alerts. we had the vehicle towed to a ford dealer and they found trouble code b1342 which if found during our 2014 recall appointment would have resulted in the steering column being replaced. we were told by the dealer that the steering column needs to be replaced but that our vehicle was no longer eligible for the recall due to the previous reprogramming, even thought it was completely ineffective in resolving the critical safety issue or alerting the driver. had we never taken the vehicle to the dealer for the reprogramming, we would still be eligible for the warranty replacement of the steering column. clearly, our vehicle experienced the exact power steering loss and failure code that was related to the recall. the reprogramming did not have the intended result whatsoever - we still experienced the power steering loss, there was no warning light/message and there was no chime to alert the driver of the loss. i have tried to escalate this issue within ford customer service but they are denying any responsibility to resolve this known defect under the recall warranty due to the previous reprogramming. i'm hoping nhtsa can help resolve this critical safety issue - i'm sure we're not the only ones affected!

14s05-electric power steering. i received a recall notice dated august 2017 regarding my 2009 ford escape. i called the capitol ford dealership and was shock to know that the next appointment available is july 2018. i called twice to confirm. i know the recall is a safety issue but waiting that long is not safe. please help me.

Power steering just stopped working without any notice. i had parked the car in a parking lot and came back 30 minutes later and the steering would not work when i cranked the car.

Power steering assist failure had the power steering reprogrammed which temporarily fixed problem, steering is starting to fail again 2.5 months later. ford claiming my vehicle was covered by 14s05 only for reprogramming and not replacing power steering column or torque sensor

Without warning i am suddenly unable to steer my vehicle. fortunately i was able to pull over and eventually after talking to family, made it home but turning the steering wheel took significant effort. i purchased the vehicle just a year ago and have already put 1800 in it and this will be s costly repair.

Electric power steering quit working.

My electronic power system is failing. sometimes it works and sometimes it stops working. it becomes a difficult manual steering when this occurs. so far this has occurred when i start the vehicle and begin to turn the wheel and continues this way while driving. it continues not working until i shut off the car and later return to the car and start it again. this occurred on city streets and in parking lots.

Intermittent loss of electronic power steering similar to those reports listed in those vehicles covered under the recall. all failures happen while parked and in motion. i believe that ford needs to dig a bit deeper and issue an amendment to this recall to fix these vehicles before the lives of others are endangered and i do not want to risk the lives of him, myself or others on the road due to the intermittent acts of the steering failures within my vehicle.

When driving slow or turning i will loose power steering. battery light will also come on. had both alternator and battery checked both are fine. recall 14s05 done just before i purchased. cpu only updated. anyone else with this problem. was almost hight making a left turn because of loss of power steering. was told by ford mech that took for test drive. that power steering has nothing to do with electrical. da it does.

Stopped at traffic light on road and power steering went out. drove home slowly without power steering. very difficult to steer. next day power steering would be intermittent. it would go out, i would turn vehicle off then on and some of the times the power steering would be off then on. ford dealer says i need a new the steering control module with column at a cost of $1,5000.

Vehicle has intermittent loss of power steering either when first started or driving . when power steering is lost , steering wheel is very hard to turn , almost impossible if vehicle is sitting still. an accident almost occurred while i was driving the vehicle. made a right had turn , power steering went out unexpectedly , and had to force the steering wheel over to the left so as not to hit a curb and light pole. took vehicle into the dealer for this problem.vin number was ran in ford's system , and came back as no open recalls on this vehicle. was then scanned for trouble codes ( at a cost of $89.95 ) , and codes were found for electronic power steering system loss of steering assist related to the torque sensor in the steering column . at this point i was told by the dealer service rep that the steering column needed to be replaced at a cost of $895.00 for the part plus labor to install. i complained that this was a recall , but was told that because there was no open recalls on the vehicle when the vin number was ran through ford's system , then i would be responsible for the repair costs . i then stated that the if the problem still exists after the recall was done , then the recall and associated parts were no good , and this repair should be at ford's expense , not myself as a customer. rep then told me to call the ford customer care line , they could do nothing else. called the customer care line , explained the situation , and was given the same answers and run around as by the dealer. did receive a case number which is cas-12427226-t6b5s5 . vehicle to me is unsafe to drive , and ford should correct this problem 100 %

Power steering just stopped working. this make it very hard to steer. much harder than cars that didn't have power steering in the older days. power steering stopped as it was being driven to the garage.

My vehicle has erratic steering issues. the electric steering caused my vehicle to literally drive right off the road into a tree. the steering wheel shakes back and forth while sitting still and causes the vehicle to drift all over the road at any given time without warning. it is a known issue, but ford is making me pay to fix the vehicle by replacing the entire steering column of the vehicle to include electronics. even the ford service manager says in all his years he has never seen an entire column fail. however, after a quick google search, this is a huge issue for ford and they are well aware of the problem. this issue will cause someone to die. it has already caused me to get in an accident by making the steering randomly jerk causing the vehicle to swerve off the road.

Initially the "power steering assist fault" warning would pop up on my dash and go away, this happened several times over the course of a couple weeks before it stopped showing up and i didn't notice any problems. about a month later i noticed extreme shaking of my steering wheel, both while in motion and in park with the vehicle still running. after a few weeks of the steering wheel shaking, one evening the "power steering assist fault" warning came on and stayed on. the following morning when i started my car the light was still on and there was no power steering.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 60 mph the vehicle lost steering power without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that there was a recall on the failure; however, the dealer stated that there was no recall. the dealer diagnosed and replaced the steering torque sensor in the steering column. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure mileage was 146,266. updated 05/17/17*lj

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving unknown speeds, the battery indicator illuminated and the instrument cluster gauges flickered on and off. also, the power steering assist failed and the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel. in addition, the radio and heater were stuck in the on position. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (bill marsh ford, 408 w mile rd nw, kalkaska, mi 49646) where it was diagnosed that the wrong battery was installed in the vehicle. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the issue and opened case number: cas- 13337258. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was unknown.

Steering wheel locks while in motion with a message of power steering assist fault , very potentially dangerous, on a city street

A quick alarm sounded then a sudden loss of power steering while driving on a quiet road, then power steering quickly came back...happened twice more in a 4 mile stretch. the power steering assist fault warning came on the screen. after turning off engine and starting again in drive, the power steering never worked and made the automobile impossible to control. when researched, it was noted that this is an issue with many many ford escapes (2009 models and more, recall #14s05) yet i did not receive a notice and my local dealer just told me that our particular auto was not recalled when matched with our vin.

This is an addendum to a previous complaint. recall on steering was performed by dealer in 8/2014 by simply resetting computer, not replacing steering column or it's components so failure was really not addressed properly. now ford refuses to do the repair at their cost as they stated that the recall was complete. car has complete power steering failure with power steering assist fault" on the screen. car is very unsafe to operate.

The power steering went out while i was driving. luckily, i was driving straight and not in the middle of a turn. the power steering will reset sometimes when i turn the car on and off. if the power steering is working when i first get in the car it will guaranteed fail within 20-30 minutes of driving. i've done research and found there are multiple power steering recalls and class-action lawsuits against ford for these issues and expect them to apply this recall to my vehicle. before the power steering went out, the steering wheel would shake at any speed above 65 mph and it continues to do so.

I purchased this car in february 2017 and one week later, i was pulling into a parking spot and the power steering failure light came on and the power steering ceased to work. the car had 116,000 miles on it. i couldn't drive the car and my husband had to come and drive the car home. after looking on line, we discovered the power steering recall 14s05 that existed. after more research we found this car did have the software update in 2014 so ford says it has satisfied that recall and will not fix this. we had to pay to have the torque sensor replaced. since the software update only warns of the problem existing and doesn't fix the faulty part(s), i think it is absolutely unconscionable for the nhtsa to allow ford to say they satisfied the recall without fixing the faulty part(s). this makes consumers think the nhtsa really doesn't care about our safety. the only way for the nhtsa to fix this is to strongly encourage or do whatever it takes to issue another recall to actually fix this injustice. ford, we as many others, have purchased numerous fords to buy american and trusted you would do what is right for your customers!! this makes all of us not want to buy ford any more. do the right thing and issue another recall, or open the previous recall to fix our cars or reimburse us for the money we had to spend to fix the faulty parts you put in our cars!!!!

Lost all power steering on interstate at high rate of speed.

Power steering went out.
