We have classified the 520 complaints from 2009 Ford Escape about STEERING into the following categories.
Power steering went out while driving a dangerous road. no warning light. very difficult to steer. home
Power steering asst. went out. on checking, there is a ford recall 14s05 for that problem. according to ford, the recall work was preformed on sept 11, 2014 by joe cooper ford. they furnished me a document # 680882e. i was never informed of this work and do not think it was preformed. the torque sensor has gone out and the car went into sudden manual steering while driving which was difficult to perform. i was afraid i would have an accident. i was driving on a city street in tulsa ok at 40 mph when the power assist went out without warning of any kind. i believe ford should have informed me of the problem and replaced the faulty torque sensor at the time of the warranty work
I both the car used but the powersteering went out about to cause death it did the same thing the recall said
Power steering has gone out. the steering wheel vibrated before it just went out. vehicle was stationary and when i started it up and tried to back up it was extremely hard to turn the wheel.
Power steering failure. exact failure as reported under ford recall # 14s05 but this specific vin# is not a part of the recall. power steering failed while driving. could have potentially resulted in loss of control and crash.
The vehicle is having electrical issues . the for dealer says its a sensor but it has thrown out my power steering
Power steering assist failure
Power steering failure!! had to take to a dealership and was given code b2337b. so now, they want to charge $1200 to replace my steering column. they said it's not functioning! that is a major safety concern. ford company said the power steering recall hasn't included my vin number yet but to save receipt just in case that changes.
The power steering went out. the wheel had been shuddering for a few weeks and gradually getting worse. while driving down the highway the power steering suddenly went out. i had to get the entire power steering column and parts replaced. my mechanic said that ford recalled all power steering in cars made from 2008-2011, but for some reason my car did not have a recall even though it was made during those years.
Power assist light came on while driving very hard to steer per dealership steering torch sensor out not covered by any recall
While traveling at 35mph on a city street an alert sounded on the vehicle followed by a message stating power steering assist fault. vehicle immediately became hard to steer and nearly resulted in a collusion. managed to pull vehicle in a parking lot and message continued to be displayed after restarting vehicle. contacted tow service to have vehicle towed to dealership.
Power steering assist fault alert is on and now great effort to turn with steering. just got in car this morning and it was a first time alert in stationary
Power steering went out while driving it was very hard for me to move the steering wheel and even harder to turn.
My steering started shaking. a few days later my power steering assist fault light came one. the following day my power steering went out. this problem was supposedly "fixed" on my vechical in 2017 due to a recall. however, according to paperwork it was recalibrated and not replaced and now is broken. do i have to pay for the repairs?
Steering locks up on turns when low speed turns
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 45 mph, the steering ability became difficult and the tire pressure monitoring system indicator illuminated. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 156,000.
I happen to see it's a lot of recalls on the ford escapes i typed my vinland it shows zero recalls but i'm actually having the same problems that the recalls have my ford escape powersteering asist fault screen can't up now it's hard to turn and what not before this screen popped up i hadd another screen telling me tire sensor fault this problem is well common i actually think they need to recall more vehicles
I was having problems with my steering wheel shaking, i took it into midas to have it checked and they thought it might be a build up of snow and ice as the weather has been very cold. they said it could also be the steering and to take it to ford. i drove to see my son in battle creek about 40 miles away and after my visit and on my way home it seemed to be getting more shaky so i went right home and as i turned into the driveway the steering went out. so i called brooklyn ford and had my car towed to them as they are very reputable. they said that i was the eighth person they had to fix this same problem. now i think that is eight to many and think something was wrong when there was a recall for this problem on the 2008 models. brooklyn ford said the cause was a scanned code-b2278 steering shaft torque sensor malfunction-internal failure to torque sensor. brooklyn ford had to replace steering column ( part number cl8z 3c529d), reprogram, clear code, retest. the cost for this was $1,285.85 and being a retired senior this was a good share of my living expenses. please research this as it just seems funny that so many cars had to have this done just this year.
I stopped to parallel park on a busy main street in downtown clovis. as i was backing and turning into a a parking space between two parked vehicles the power steering quit working without any warning. i was not able to turn tight enough to park into the space. all i could do was to pull out and slowly drive half a block to a large half empty parking lot where i had allot more room to maneuver. i was able to park there and we had to walk back to the restaurant to eat. when we returned to our vehicle and after i started it, i found the power steering was working again. i drove to the closest ford dealership that was also where we had purchased our escape from. i went inside to talk with a service writer. i told him about the recall 14s05 and that was the problem i was having. i informed him that the steering column had been replaced before in 2012 due to a steering problem. we never received a recall from ford over the issue in 2014. he checked our vin number and said they couldn't do anything for us under the recall. he said i could try to contact ford motor company and see if they were able to do anything for us.
Due to a recall issued by ford motor company (nhtsa recall 14v-284), jerry's ford (annandale, va) replaced the power steering system on my 2009 ford escape on july 24, 2014, at no charge. at the time, the escape's mileage was 32,950. on february 17, 2019, the power steering failed when i was driving in heavy traffic a few miles from ourisman ford (6129 richmond hwy, alexandria, va). with great difficulty, i managed to drive to ourisman, where, two days later, they replaced the failed system at a cost of $2,319.97. at that time, the escape's mileage was 54,061. the power steering system that had been replaced on recall lasted only 21,111 miles and fewer than 4.5 years. the escape is otherwise in excellent condition and has been regularly maintained since i purchased it in 2008. it's reasonable to expect that the part would have lasted longer, especially since its failure may have caused serious injury. i made several attempts to resolve the issue. on february 22, i spoke with brendon at ford corporate (800.392.3673). he said he could do nothing and suggested i contact the dealer. on february 28, i spoke with chuck jackowski at ourisman, who said he might be able to help and would call me back, but did not call. when i called again on march 7, chuck said he did not yet have a solution, but would follow up and call me on march 8; he did not call. i called chuck once more on march 13 and joon ko answered. i identified myself, joon said he would get chuck, but returned to say that chuck was busy and would call me back shortly. chuck did not call. i have also written to ford corporate; no reply.
Steering assist suddenly stopped working on my 2009 ford escape. i stopped for lunch then cranked it and steering was extremely hard to turn. ford dealership said it is the torque assembly. i also noticed the seatbelt alarm had quit working and the clock needed reset. numerous issues with tire pressure sensors. there has been a terrible vibration or shaking in the steering wheel while stopped with foot on the brake since purchase. i also had problems in the steering column in 2011, just after purchase. there is a recall on the torque assembly for same year of car but not my vin, of course.
Power steering torque rotation sensor. the steering is hard to turn the vehicle while driving. while driving, the steering all of a sudden can become hard to turn the vehicle. the recall for some reason is not on my vehicle but on some of the same model. ford has a recall 14s05 but ford says my vehicle doesn't fall under the recall.
I use my vehicle as my only source of income as a single parent. i came home for a quick lunch. when i went to leave i pulled out of my driveway & had no power steering. it went out with no warning, i almost drove right into my neibors house!!!! i have been going back and forth with the ford dealership that i purchased the vehicle from now to find out there are hundreds of other buyers that are having the exact same issues. it started with my tire pressure sensor light that goes off and on within the last couple weeks and now this. this is completely unacceptable clearly there's a manufacturing flaw. is ford waiting for somebody to get serious bodily injury from an accident from their manufacturing flaw or god forbid kill somebody due to an accident. in my geographical area power steering is needed as it is glare ice road conditions pretty much 24/7 for three to five months out of the year. when speaking with my local ford dealership it's going to cost me near $1,000 to fix, $1,000 that i don't have and don't have the capabilities of obtaining. this is completely unacceptable. i've been researching online and see quite a few people throwing out the idea of a class action lawsuit, i'm definitely a board . i'm very disappointed in ford. i would imagine if this isn't made right they will be losing a lot of customers myself included i will never buy another ford again, and i'm in the market for myself and my teenager.
Power steering assist fault. and also tire pressure sensor fault escape 4wd v6 w/ ~172,xxx. dash notification appeared on 02/09/19 but quickly went away. power steering was fine, not one issue ever. then on 02/11/19 on the way home, the dash alert showed "power steering assist fault" and it wouldn't go away and beeped multiple times. i parked it at home in driveway and went to move it into the street a little bit later and the power steering was nonexistent. took full body weight to just get it to in front of the house. lucky that i wasn't driving or delivering for my job like i usually am during the week. but to my luck, my vin isn't under the recall even though my escape was built in may 2009, well within the recall time period. i think highly of ford and am very disappointed at their attempts to silence and curb customer issues... and this is a dangerous manufacturing issue! any ford executive or higher up would have this done asap if something bad happened to their own family. we need to all stand up and file a class action lawsuit. they don't care about our safety or our financial wellbeing. most can't afford these $1-2k fixes.
Power steering assist fault. loss of power steering.
Lost control of all power steering
My cars electrical power steering failed after i stopped for gas. prior to this my cars steering wheel would shake when ever the car was running and not in motion, like when sitting at a red light for example. this occurred for about 3 days before the power steering failed. a recall has been issued but my vin says my car was not included in the recall. i can not turn my steering wheel anymore without a lot of effort making the car to dangerous to drive.
Driving home from my dr appointment bells go of and steering goes out. you need lots of strength to turn this suv at any speed i a new one of this vehicle and i thank god i am lucky to be alive this thing is a death trap i think ford is dropping the ball with a software up date. the need to fix the steering so we can feel safe
Power steering went out randomly on my way to work this morning checked my vin number and no recalls are shown even though my escape is from the kansas city plant as well. this is the second recalled problem with this vehicle ford is refusing to fix.
February 1st 2019 i brought my car to the dealership due to intermittent failure of power steering. the day before the appointment the power steering failed completely. the dealership said it had a recall and performed a software update. after that the power steering worked properly for two weeks. on february 14th i attempted to drive home after work and the power steering was a complete loss. i returned the car to the dealership the next day. they reported the torque sensor had failed and was not covered under the recall. ford did not adequately prevent my car from the loss of power steering. the dealership originally told me two options were possible, updating software or replacing parts. now that they updated the software, the recall was cleared off of my car but the problem still persists and will not be properly addressed.
Electric power assist failed twice with no warning upon start up, causing the power steering to default to manual control, basically could not be steered. steering column had to be replaced. never received any notification regarding the recall that was done on this issue for a 2009 escape. total repair cost incurred 1,358.86.
Power steering has failed even though recall 14s05 was performed october 2014
Takata recall since i bought this car a lot of problems with electrics issue sensors, power steering, ignition, speeding sensors, (all electrics) the worst one is power steering. there was a recall on line for this model but not for my car. (why not my car?) there are in recall all 2008 - 2011 ford escapes
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while attempting to drive out of a parking space, the vehicle lost steering ability. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to varney ford inc (237 moosehead trail, newport, me 04953) in july of 2015 for an evaluation, but they only erased the codes and advised the contact that the vehicle was fine. the dealer was not contacted for the recent failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
Power steering assist is lost.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving and making a left turn, the vehicle jerked and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the steering wheel seized. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was driven to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 103,602.
The instrument panel lights and gauges went out at which time i noticed the power steering and turn signals didn't work. this happened 3 or times on a 30 minute drive with a duration of about 30-45 seconds each
As i was driving on a city street the steering locked up on me. my car was still running but i was not able to turn left or right. luckily i was close to my home and just pushed it to my driveway and had to turn the wheel super hard to get it in. it was terrifying as my son was in the car with me and i had no idea what was going on.
While making a right hand turn, my escape seemed to lose power and was veryt hard to make the turn. got out of the turn and it seemed fine but the power steering assist fault showed up on the dash. the next turn i made, it did it again! i googled it and it showed there was recalls for this exact same fault. edmunds report 5-29-14 stated ford recalls 1.1 million vehicles for power steering problems, including 2008-'11 ford escape, 2011-13' ford explorer. i took my 2009 ford escape to the ford dealer to have them look at it. they ran my vin number and comes up as no recall! they explain to me that they have ran into this problem before. that some of the recalls don't apply to all vehicles listed in recalls. i told the dealer how could this be? they offered me to call ford directly at 1-800-392-3673...i will call this number once done with this vehicle safety complaint. it's a very good thing i was taking my daughters car today to go and put gas in it when this happened. if she was driving it, i'm not sure she would of been able to turn the steering wheel when this went out on me. no telling what could of happened and thank god she wasn't driving!
2008 ford escape recall for power asst fault recall was performed in 2015 and now it has failed again, ford will not cover it again ? spoke to ford's today 01/22/2019 said sorry but we will not help you!!! i was driving got 2 dings and then a shutter and the warring light came on lost power steering and the message was power steering asst fault on city street in roseville mi
Complete loss of power steering during any point in driving.
The steering column is bad and needs replacing and the steering assist relay module and wheel position sensor, this is identical to the models produced at the kansas city plant. my son was driving and the electric steering assist went totally out and required extreme force to turn the vehicle safely. this could have had life threatening potential had he not maintained control
Takata recall i called ford in november 2018 to check for any recalls. i had 2 they said the parts had to be ordered and they would call me back for an appointment as soon as the parts came in. i got a call the beginning of december. i took my car in for the steering recall. then on january 12 2019 my steering got really stiff on me while driving on the city street to go pick up my daughter from her school. monday january 14th i took my vehicle in then i get a call saying its nothing they can do cause it don't have to do with the recall but clear across the message board it says "power steering assist fault " same recall now they telling me 1700 to fix it. i have had my truck almost 2 years come march and never had an issue with my steering until i took it in for the recall.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. when the vehicle was started, the power steering seized. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 171,000.
Power steering goes out while driving. especially on turns.
The power steering fails suddenly without warning while driving. you can still steer but it is difficult, sometimes it will fail as soon as you crank the vehicle. you can turn off vehicle then restart and it will be ok. this is a intermittent problem for now. there is a recal but only few models with the correct vin number. however everywhere on line people are having this issue and the recal will not cover because of the vin number. the steering should last the duration of the vehicle. this is extremely dangerous and all should be covered under this recal. not just a select few this problem will occur in motion, or setting still. no pattern
The power steering does not work and we have seen where a lot of these same vehicles have had the same problem. why is there not a recall on these.
1/9/19 followup on a correction for complaint #11165049 to say that this incident happened on 1/5/19 not 12/5/19. i apologize for any confusion. i will also send additional information regarding the results from firestone. i will then be towing my vehicle once more to al piemonte ford for possible repair. i feel that this should be investigated and placed as a recall regardless of if it belonged to a particular batch of vehicles, which is what i was told by ford in october. if this is there defect why shouldn't they be responsible for it when i have held of my part and paid for the vehicle and kept up with maintenance. thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. sincerely, *tr
Corrections from original complaint#11165049 indicated by * asterisk. i called ford in october for recall #14s05, because my steering wheel began to stiffen up to the point that i was unable to drive it. i was told by ford that my vehicle did not fall in that batch of recalls. ford stated i would be responsible for any work done. i had credit with firestone so fortunately, i was able to take it there for this stiff steering. firestone did complete a brake inspection and replaced the alternator, and air tire pressure sensor on oct. 11, 2018. i have had my car towed home, then to one car repair place and then to firestone car care service center causing me to spend cash money for one tow, and one by triple aaa both in one day, and now this recent tow exhausted all my tows with triple aaa. i can't re-tow until *1/19/2019 for renewal, but run the risk if is the same problem they still may not tow meaning additional money out of my pocket on a retired pension. on *jan. 5, 2019 stiff steering issue returned. i was about to head for elgin, illinois and on the expressway, and noticed when changing lanes the steering wheel began to stiffen. i pulled over and had to determine what was i going to do. i managed to get back on expressway turn around and return to my aunt's home, and then the wheel got extremely stiff especially when turning. i parked the vehicle and called for a tow to firestone since i thought it was something they may have done incorrectly. firestone called me and stated that this issue was beyond their capability. it is a defect, and i need to take it to ford.
Intermittent power outage of steering while driving. causes unsafe steering and low speed driving, ford admits problem closed recall. vehicle has 35500 miles well maintained. when steering power stops hazard driving condition will ca use accident.
