Problems with 2008 Ford Escape ENGINE

On average, the 2008 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 89 517 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2008 Ford Escape

Randomly the car will 'stall' to to speak even though it is an automatic and not a 5-speed. when i say stall i am referring to when i am stopped at a stop sign, red light, yielding to turn, etc - when i go to hit the gas the rpm's rev up high and the car speed is very low and at a rolling speed - even though i push down all of the way in order to get the car to speed up to avoid being struck my other vehicles when turning. the car will then regain all speed at once - instead of gradually. this has happened numerous times while i am trying to merge onto an oncoming interstate ramp or am at a red light or stop sign. i have missed being hit thus far but have had a few close calls. i have a check engine light on and have taken it to several dealerships and auto mechanic shops that have been unable to determine an issue with the car. they have read the check engine code and have found nothing wrong with the car.

Just driving and all of a sudden loud metal noise. then intermittent metal scraping sound. took it to the shop and they said it's an axel and transmission problem. it will cost more to repair than the car is worth. i still owe 2 years of payments. terrible absolutely terrible. on a city street coming to a stop at a light traveling approximately 25mph. no accident or anything just driving slow coming to a stop.

My vehicle will be in motion while driving and suddenly have a shifting problem. the vehicle will shake and stutter and looses power no matter how much you press your foot on the gas peddle. my engine light flashed on and off a couple times and then once my vehicle shifted, it would idle rough and act like it was going to die when i would stop at a light. this has been happening for several days now at different speeds on residential streets and the highway. the engine light has not come on since. i took it to have the error code read from the engine light coming on but it was only a generic code. one of the codes was for an airbag sensor. i do not know what is wrong with it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while approaching a stop, the vehicle accelerated on its own in traffic without warning. the contact applied the brakes and emergency brake and the vehicle swerved off the road. the contact finally stopped the vehicle before crashing. the vehicle was taken to carmax of arlington (8400 anderson blvd, fort worth, tx 76120, (817) 801-1501), but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed because the test could not be read. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 50,000. the vin was invalid. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. when the vehicle was started and placed in reverse, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the steering seized. the contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 190,000.

Engine unexpectedly shuts off while driving at various speeds without any warning.

We bought our car used in 2008/2009. we took our car into a dealership when it was under warranty because of exhaust fumes. we often are smelling exhaust but since the dealership dismissed our problem we have been dealing with it all these years as 'normal'. i recently was hearing of police officers with ford vehicles passing out or having damage because of the fumes in their ford suv. i took my daughter to the doctor a few years ago after being on a trip in the vehicle because she was throwing up on the way there and back. the doctors gave her back x-rays and said that it was just motion sickness.. she often complains of being sick in the car. i also don't like the fumes, but just drive it. now i realize it may be a problem that was ignored by ford to begin with. the more i drive it the more dizzy spells i have during the day. the fumes are almost immediately when we run the vehicle and when driving. this is been re-accuring since we bought the vehicle with around 50k, now it has 212k miles.

When driving car will shut down with a warning pull over and turn vehicle off very dangerous no time to find exits does not matter where you are at!!

Engine stopped dead while driving.stated stop safely now.well as car stopped dead with no warning is was not safe..service says needs new throttle body. thats fine but i could have been killed

While driving my steering became really hard to turn still was able to go down the road but it was very difficult to turn. took my escape to a repair shop and was told my electronic steering sensor is bad. i do not have the time nor the money to deal with this issue and this is definitely a safety issue. i also have an issue with my exhaust manifold leaking three exhaust manifold bolts are broken off causing a hissing noise. i can smell the exhaust in my vehicle when parked.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was very difficult to turn without warning. in addition, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed but not repaired. the parts that needed to be replaced were unknown. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000.

When sitting idle at red light or stop sign, it rumbles roughly, i hit the accelerator it hesitates to go then all of a sudden gets a burst of speed. this mainly happens in city street.

I was traveling on the autobahn in germany and the car for no apparent reason shut off and displayed the 'stop safely now' message. there was no where to pull over so i had to stop in the middle of the road. luckily there was hardly no traffic. this happened 5 times in 1 hour.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. after stalling, the emergency warning light illuminated. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electrical coolant pump motor for the hybrid battery needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 14v526000 (hybrid propulsion system), but the vin was not included. the failure mileage was 150,000.

Takata recall - vehicle transmission slips, engine revs and decelerates while driving, ignition switch will not start car each time. sometimes it takes twenty tries. i have read hundreds of these complaints on the internet.ev

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly shut off. after restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 140,000.

My car all of a sudden shuts down due to a "motor electronics coolant (mec) pump" failure, i read on the internet that ford motor co has a recall for this problem, however when i called fmc they told me over the phone that "according to my vin my car does not fall under the recall program, my car has been doing this for at least once a week and i'm getting worried about causing an accident

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that the ignition switch failed to turn correctly to start the engine. the engine was able to start after several attempts, but eventually failed permanently. the vehicle was taken to the manufacturer where it was diagnosed and repaired. the failure reccured after the repair. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 44,000.

While driving my car it lunge forward, which it have never done before. after coming to a complete stop at a red light, when i push on the gas peddle to continue on my way the car stalled, then lunge forward again. i was scared that the car behind me was going to hit me. please help all the ford escape owners with this problem. my car is currently at the ford dealer, hoping they can rectify the problem. i haven't had my vehicle for a year yet, just brought it last year.

The gas pedal is very hard to push down when attempting to take off from a stop. it is considerably worse in cold weather. it makes it very hard to control acceleration when pulling away from a stop.

I received a recall notification 14s05 from ford about my 2008 ford escape. the recall was for a faulty torque sensor that would either be reprogrammed or replaced. instead of replacing the torque sensor, ford service decided to just reprogram it because it had not failed or produced a service code. just recently the torque sensor failed and my steering lost power while driving through a parking lot. i did not have the strength to turn the wheel and had to just stop and leave the car in the lot until someone could come help me. i brought my car back to the same dealership that performed the original recall repair and am being told that the recall has been performed and now i must pay them to replace the torque sensor. after spending time researching the issue online i discovered that this is a widespread problem. it is apparent that ford is only replacing the sensors if they have already failed when you bring your car in for the recall. if it has not failed then ford only does a reprogramming that doesn't prevent them from failing but allows ford to close out the recall on your vehicle and save money on a replacement part. i don't understand how this is legal for them to do. i talked to several of ford's service managers and customer service representatives and they all give the standard rehearsed answer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle decelerated while driving 70 mph and the wrench indicator illuminated. the contact was able to coast the vehicle onto the road shoulder. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the dealer performed a diagnostic test, which located a failure code at the throttle body unit. the manufacturer was notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 134,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving approximately 60 mph, a ding noise was heard and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle stalled and the braking and steering ability seized. the vehicle came to a complete stop. after approximately five minutes, the vehicle started. the vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired under warranty. the contact also stated that the vehicle had a mechanical pump issue. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Was diving down the road with my two kids in the car when i heard a pop i looked in my rearview and watched as a small part went bouncing down the road than it slowed down immediately and i couldn't accelerate or drive it stopped dead in the middle of the road i got out and my transmission fluid had gushed out all over the bottom and back rear windshield took it to a garage it is the transmission it needs to totally be replaced i'm guessing the trans cooler was leaking fluid and after the fluid was to low that it literally blew up i don't understand why there has not been a recall the 2008 ford escape has the most complaints than any other year it's insaine my car died in the middle of the road on a hill in the middle of no where with two little kids n the car we are so lucky that we didn't get smashed into by someone they better fix this problem i should sue ford for selling faulty transmissions and not fixing them and i don't understand after all of the complaints you have had why the safety comics ion or the government has not done a recall on this year especially i've read over 800 complaints and r stone has been the. same thing with my year and moe it doesn't matter how many times the transmission is replaced you get about 24k to 40k before you need to replace them again

While driving down the road at approximately 45 mph, the vehicle all of a sudden lost power and the vehicle started slowing down, and the wrench light became visible on the instrument cluster. i pulled the vehicle to the side of the road to figure out what the issue was. i realized it was the electronic throttle body failing. i drove it home as i was only a mile from my house. once i started in forward motion, the transmission would have a hard time shifting from first to second gear, when it did shift, there was a forceful lunge forward. i have seen a lot of complaints in regards to this and many other issues that are going wrong with ford's escape model. i am very disappointed, with the amount of issues that suv has.

Transmission with no second gear. should not have to replace a transmission with under 100,000 miles!! noticed same complaint multiple times online, so figured would report.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was driven to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the throttle body needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 117,000.

Transmission is constantly leaking.

Was driving home after class let out, was going about 30 mph when all of a sudden my car stalled and i had to apply more pressure to the gas pedal. i looked into it, turn out my second & fourth gear went out on my transmission. turns out i am not the only person with this problem. i have had it for 2 years & not even at 100,000 miles! ford needs to recall this model, because it should not happen this frequently to all the 08' models.

Gas pedal sticks when air temp is below 20 degrees. can't press pedal to get gas to engine. *tr

Driving down the road the power cut out to the vehicle, and the throttle stopped responding, the engine continued to run but very labored. at the same time the wrench light lit up on the dash. using the forward momentum i was able to pull the vehicle over, where it stalled. i was able to re-tart the engine where it ran labored again, and stalled out, the throttle was not responsive during this time at all. after approximately 10 re-starts with the last coming after the vehicle sat awhile, i was able to re-start it and drive it normal. throttle response returned, and the wrench light was off. this issue occurred for my wife again on 11/12 with a similar result. *tr

After years (since early on in the ownership of the vehicle purchased new from the dealer) of intermittent problems with my gas pedal sticking (mostly in colder weather), the most recent incident was by far the worst and, like many other 2008 ford escape owners with the same issue, i am very lucky that it occurred in an area where i was not in immediate danger from other cars. i was stopped at a stop sign and when i pressed the gas pedal to move forward the pedal started to respond then fell to the floor with no further response. there was no power to move forward and no warning lights came on. i lifted the pedal to make sure that it was not stuck on anything and it just fell limply back to the floor. i manipulated the arm under the pedal with my hand until it loosened up and the pedal was able to engage again. i then drove to my destination without further incident. this is not the first time this has happened and if my car does not become part of the "customer satisfaction program," i am sure that it will not be the last. the nhtsa investigation of alleged throttle body failures in 2005-2012 ford escape vehicles sharing the same or substantially similar part, did not result in enough vehicles being included in the resulting ford "customer satisfaction program," which only included cars from 2009-2012, when it should have included many more cars. the complaint forums are filled with many complaints regarding the same issue from at least 2008 ford escape owners. to not include everyone from the initial investigation is doing a disservice and it will be sad day when the rest of the car owners are included only because somebody has died! *tr

Stuck gas pedal: as i was driving to work in moderately heavy traffic on us 127 in michigan at approximately 8 a.m., on 10 october 2014, the gas pedal froze on my (manual transmission) 2008 ford escape and i began to lose speed quickly from the 70 mph i had been traveling. the pedal would not move up or down no matter how hard i pushed or pulled at it. i tried kicking it as best as i could but it would not budge, and the floor mat was not near the pedal at all. i had to maneuver to the shoulder of the road and continued 'coasting' while i tried to get the pedal to move. the area i was at was not conducive to a full stop unless absolutely necessary due to the clearance on the side of the road and the curve i was on. my speed had dropped to less than 55 mph when the gas pedal finally released and i was able to push it down to increase my speed again and eventually work back into traffic, though with caution in case it happened again as i was still not in an area safe for a full stop. the temperature at that time was around freezing. i took the escape to the ford dealer and they said no codes appeared when scanned so there was nothing to indicate it had happened. they also told me that neither my vehicle, nor the throttle assembly in it are listed as part of the recall for "sticky accelerator pedal" for ford escapes. this is a 2008 manual transmission, 4 cy., 4-door, 2wd escape. why was it not included in the recall? i've had problems with the gas pedal 'catching' and then immediately releasing since we bought it (at about 16000 miles), but the dealer could never duplicate the problem and thus did nothing about it. my online research indicates this "frozen" or "stuck" pedal (where the pedal will not depress at all) is not a new issue and across all model years, yet nothing has been done by ford and they refuse to acknowledge it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. when the contact started the vehicle, the abs, traction control, brake, and service engine warning lights illuminated. the contact stated that the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) and felt that the recall remedy was the cause of the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 22,000. mailed out 01/13/15*lj

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the air bag and check engine warning lights illuminated continuously. in addition, the vehicle began shaking. the failure recurred on multiple occasions. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) and after the recall repair, the failures occurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

The transmission went out and had to be replaced. vehicle has been well maintained and this should not have happened. *tr

When i am stopped at a stop-sign, i go to accelerate and the vehicle does not go. after about 2-3 seconds of pressing the accelerator pedal to turn onto a street, the vehicle will then surge picking up a little speed. i have almost been hit by traffic when turning onto a street numerous times. it does not happen when driving at higher speeds only when i accelerate from a complete stop. this is very dangerous because when i need to accelerate, the vehicle will not let me. so basically there is a delay from the time i press the accelerator, to the time the vehicle actually kicks in and goes. extremely dangerous! *tr

I was driving through a crowded neighborhood with many people crossing the roads with the weather being warm. all of a sudden, the engine light and other dashboard lights came on, and the car stalled. the brakes would not work, so i turned on my hazard lights, held the horn down and waved frantically through my open window. luckily i had enough space in front of me so i could allow the car to cruise to a halt. i unfortunately had to roll through a stop sign where the people were aware that i was having an issue with the car. upon stopping the car and turning it off, i got out and looked under the hood for any smoke or other issues. i let the car sit on the side of the road for about 5-10 minutes, and then started it up again. i was within 2 minutes of my residence so i rolled the car all the way home with my hazards on. this could have been a serious situation with multiple injuries and/or fatalities (small children in area). ford needs to fix this issue as soon as possible. *tr

My car isn't working properly due to defective ford throttle body. *tr

While turning the wheels the abs light blinks on and off and the car seemed to be slowly losing power. when wheels were straightened again it ran as normal. this happened three times on the drive home from the grocery store, each time when i was turning, the electrical panel was dimming and the gas pedal lost ability to propel car. *js

Throttle sticks shut, especially when vehicle is cold. applying pressure to the throttle will sometimes snap the throttle open, causing the vehicle to surge. sometimes the throttle will not move until the vehicle is warm. throttle pedal assembly and cable appear to be free moving and not sticking. when moving throttle body shaft by hand (vehicle cold, not running), the throttle body sticks shut but can be freed with some effort. once moved from the shut position, the throttle body shaft moves freely against the return spring. cables attached to throttle body shaft are not under stress and do not appear to be impeding throttle body movement. lubricant applied to cabling pivots and attachment points have minimal if any effect. *tr

I was at a stop sign, at a complete stop. when i accelerated, the car felt and sounded like it was going to stall and the gas pedal did not work--then the car surged forward. the abs light and traction control lights then came on and would not go off. this is the 2nd time i have had an issue with the throttle body--i had it replaced at a ford dealer 3 years ago, and now it is being replaced again. i have had the car since 2008, and i'm on my 3rd throttle body--the original one, the one replaced at the ford dealer, and now this one. the financial burden is stressful enough, but then add on the fact that, at any time, the throttle can freeze up and stop working which can cause a serious accident. *tr

Car stalled when driving on hwy in snow storm on two different occasions. also, rpm's climb, just had the steering column replaced 2 months ago. *tr

While stopped at intersections while driving the vehicle will stall out or when accelerating from through the intersection it will stall out. *tr

Engine just stopped in the middle of driving and i almost got involved into a car accident. i pulled over my car and shifted the gear to p and re-started the engine. it worked but i felt engine was not functioning okay. it felt like it kept burping constantly. i could feel the move. i drove back home to worry about the issue. *tr

I bought my 2008 ford escape used in november 2013. in december 2013 the gas pedal started sticking each time i went to accelerate. it gets stuck "up", meaning i have to pound my foot on the gas pedal in order for it to accelerate forward. my ford is a manual transmission and this makes it not only dangerous on the road but almost impossible to not stall out all the time. called dealership and they were of no help. said car was used and it is what it is. it is now may 2014 and it my family and i can hardly get anywhere. car is very dangerous. took car to midas for a tune up and an estimate. midas stated my car needs a brand new throttle unit, throttle cable and a 3 part fuel kit. this will cost roughly $1000.00 midas stated. we don't have that kind of money. i don't feel safe driving my children around and come to find out that ford extended a warranty for ford escapes 2009-2012 for this same exact fuel kit and throttle issues. 2008 ford escapes are having the same issue for many consumers. please help me. my family and i can't afford to get this repaired and my 6 and 8 year old (and my fianc) can't be driven around in this car. my own safety is one thing and i will ensure i get to work everyday, but someone is going to get hurt if this is warranty isn't extended or recalled for ford 2008 escapes as well. i have all midas service paperwork and documentation if needed. please help us. we are in danger each time i drive this car and we need a car to drive. thank you-cincinnati, ohio/ may 2014. *tr

Driving down interstate red exclamation inside triangle illuminated and vehicle cut off. had to pull over to side of road. repaired at ford dealer on 4/3/14 rivertown ford in columbus ga. received recall notice 14s19/ nhtsa 14v-526 and they keep giving me run around on returning my money. *tr

Wrench light came on and i immediately took my vehicle to john bleakley ford for a diagnostic test to see what was going on. i noticed that the vehicle was stalling while going uphill and sometimes would not go more than 20. then when driving in the city the vehicle would sometimes jerk. this is a very nervous feeling!!! i was told that it is a factory problem & told to continue driving it. i was told by the service mgr to contact them in january after he contacts ford. i called and emailed often ad it is a nervous feeling to drive a car like this. i finally was able to follow up with the service mgr who avoided me until may 2014, and he only spoke to me after i contacted mr bleakley! i have quoted prices for a rebuilt transmission and a new transmission which is very expensive. i am still trying to figure out what happens when ford customers do not find the money to make expensive repairs. the mileage is too low to need a transmission. also i have maintained my car good. this is dangerous & unbelievable!!! *tr

I recently had to pay for a repair for a known defect for the 2008 ford escape. it was a transmissions fluid leak near the ac condenser assembly which required replacement. there are numerous complaints and i would like to add to the list as opposed to sitting by and taking it. manufacturers wants people to faithfully support them by buying their products and in return they should faithfully repair known common problems instead of acting as if they don't exist. i should not be held accountable nor responsible for your factory defects! *jb

Vehicle fails to accelerate properly after a complete stop. rpm's are raised to high before the transmission shifts into 2nd gear. *tr
