Problems with 2001 Ford Escape SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Twice, the stall almost caused an accident. due to loss of power brakes, we almst rearended the car in front of us the first time, and the second time we nearly went off the road into someones year -- across double yellow line on a backroad -- because of loss of power steering. *ak

Vehicle has stalled twice at 35-40 mph while coasting down hill. dealer replaced computer module and ecc relay. nlm consumer states keyless entry works intermittently. the weather strips coming off on both back doors. the vacuum line was loose and hissing. the coolant light continues to come on due to coolant bottle failure, also there was a cracking noise under the dash and the radio went out. *yh

While driving on a downhill slope the vehicle suddenly shut down causing loss of power steering, the driver was able to restart the vehicle,the dealer replaced a valve which controlled air flow, the next day this problem occured again when going up a semi-steep incline, the dealer has been unable to duplicate the problem, the vehicle also has a metallic rattle under the hood when accelerating on a slight incline. nlm

Engine stalled while going downhill, power brakes and steering went out so very hard to control on an incline. seems to be a common problem with the exact same situations with this vehicle.

Consume r was traveling about 45mph on a mountain road, and without prior warning, engine check light came on the dashboard. then, there were no brakes or power steering. also, speed pedal went all the way to the floor. consumer was able to control vehicle. dealership was aware of problems. *ak

While the escape is driving at no particular speed, the steering wheel tugs a little then it locks completely up, then the brakes fail, the engine light comes on and the only way to get the car to stop is to use the emergency brake. my escape has done this three times since i bought it in may of this year. two of the incidents almost resulted in car accidents because the car can not be steered. the car totally freezes up with all engines lights coming on. the speed doesn't seem to be a factor. all three occassions my cd player has been on, the air has been on low and my lights have been on. after the car finally stops by using the emergengy brake, i shut everything off and it starts right back up again.

Gear shift lever sticks in front of radio. when changing radio stations hands knocks gear shift into neutral while vehicle is in motion.*ak consumer states that the vehicle produces so much brake dust that the wheels turn black only after three or four days of driving, ford states nothing can be done. *slc

Abs system will intermittently work. but, usually consumer has to press brakes pedal all the way in before vehicle will stop. contacted dealer. *ak

The brakes make squeaking noise all the time. it gets louder when applying your foot on the brakes. brake powder blackens the rims of the tires. service department states this is completely normal.*ak

Left rear passenger restraint was jammed after the first use. this part was replaced and it was jammed after the first use. it was replaced a second time and is currently fuctional but this is the first time in 4 months since purchase date that it has been functional. rear differential had a broken seal and was leaking. this part was replaced and is now functional. the master cylinder was cracked and replaced. this part is now functional. the power steering was effected when part of the power steering system fell out of the car when the vehicle was put in park. the parts (including alternator, belts and spring) literally fell off the car. this could have resulted in many fatalities as the vehicle was on the highway only minutes prior with a car full of passangers. the results of this incident would have been drastically different if this had happened when the vehicle was in motion. ford has not been responsive to my needs as a consumer and has minimized the safety hazard posed by this defective vehicle.

Tires make a humming noise. consumer feels that they may be leaving ground like hydroplaning, and at 65 mph vehicle wobbles, vehicle is not stable at high speeds with window down. *ak the vehicle hesitates when a/c unit is in operation and a/c make a loud cyclic clicking sound. transmission makes sound. the vehicle was unstable at 65 mph with a slight wind and front end makes tumbling sounds on rough roads. the alternator light comes on intermittently. the cruise control turns off automaticaly by itself. the front brake has excessive dust. the vehicle had numerous interior system failures and malfunctioning. *yh

Engine shut off while driving down a hill has happened to me four times this week. causes loss of power-assisted brakes and steering. vehicle put in dealer shop on 4/6/2001. no repairs made because dealer could not duplicate the problem in the shop.

Ford dealer has attempted 3 times to repair brakes going on the 4th when they get the new brake pads in,they told us about a month from now.the vehicle shakes when slowing from 55 to 40 mph. and can get scary at times.it also vibrates at 65 mph.we contacted ford customer service about our problem and they told us that don mcclain said that they have already fixed the brakes,which is a lie. they are giving us the runaround to avoid our states lemon law.as far as we can tell no other ford escapes have this problem. thank you.

Brake light came on dashboard. also, vehicle just shutdown without prior warning. when consumer applied brakes pedal was normal. she took vehicle to dealership. mechanic told her she needed a master cylinder. *ak

While traveling when and depressing brake pedal, pedal went to floorboard and vehicle lost brake power. *ak consumer also experiencing problems with passenger and driver window, and also a fuel line clip failed causing the motor to loose power and fuel was pumped over the hot engine. *jb

Driving around 40mph, and car has stalled three times on me now with loss of steering and brakes, most recently on 10/11/2001. ford says they don't know what is wrong.*ak
