On wed. evening jan. 30, 2002 at 6:30 pm i was driving my 2001 ford escape home from the hicksville railroad station. while driving at 50 mph on route 106 the vehicle turned itself off with no warning of any kind. fortunately i was able to get off to the side of the road and coast to a stop. this was tremendously difficult to do since there were no brakes and no power steering. there was no warning of any kind the engine just turned itself off. after coming to a stop i turned the key back to the off position, put the car in park, and tried to restart the car. it started right up just like nothing had occurred. i am now afraid to drive this vehicle. i was extremely lucky not to have been hurt or killed. if there had been a traffic light or stop sign i would not have been able to stop. also, if the road happened to be a curve or turn when the stall occurred i would not have been able to steer the vehicle. the ford dealer sales and service people tell me that they have never heard of this problem before. *ak
The above mentioned is an attorney writing on behalf of ms. meredith duley. while driving ms. duleys vehicle shuts off for no apparent reason losing all power. this is happened four times. manufacturer notified. *tt

My observation of when it occurs is usually when going 50 mph for a number of miles, make a turn then go downhill with the heater on full-speed. about halfway down the hill the ignition nocks out and i must pull over and restart the engine. this has happened to me about 5 or 6 times since i bought my 2001 escape in april 2001. i've never taken it to the dealership.*ak
I have spoken with a ford rep. for a new car, too many things have gone wrong. it is currently in the shop have the window and abs brakes fixed. every time it's somehting new! nlm
Auto stalled while going down extended incline at speed 35-40 mph. i was in a long line of cars and was very lucky to get the car to the side of the road without an accident. i quickly slipped the gear into neutral as it slowed and car immediately restarted. i am putting this incident into your site, even though it hasn't happened again since dec., because i know other drivers have had this reoccur intermittently, even after ford supposedly fixed vehicle.*ak
Vehicle has stalled 3 times at 35-40 mph down an incline. dealer has recalibrated computer.*ak dealer put on new eec and new idle air control. a/c failed and was replaced. *yh
Vehicle stalled without warning while doing 30mph on a downhill grade. will bring it in for service. many similar stall events have been reported by escape owners on internet sites such as http://www.escape-central.com. this is a safety issue. please order a recall to fix this dangerous problem.*ak

Several incidents of vehicle stalling while driving: 1st incident occurred when rounding a bend and going down a slight grade, was able to pull off road and restart vehicle; 2nd occurrence when driving down slight grade, was not able to pull off road and had to slip car into neutral and restart engine while still controlling vehicle on road, 3rd occurrence happened twice on trip home from work, both instances going down a slight grade and not being able to pull off road having to slip car into neutral and restart engine while still driving. after first incident on dec. 2, 2001 took the vehicle to the dealer who replaced the power relay. stated it was repaired. the 2nd incident on december 6, 2001 the dealer contacted the ford hotline and a valve was replaced. the 3rd incident occurred on january 29, 2002 and the vehicle is now at the dealer for 3 days. this is a serious problem with grave consequences awaiting ford motor co. i can't believe after the problems with the ford explorer/firestone that they won't take this more seriously with all the complaints i've already seen on this website alone. *ak
Engine stalled while driving approximately 25 to 40 mph on 27-nov-2001 and 27-jan-2002. dealership examined vehicle for first incident, and was unable to determine a cause for problem. vehicle has not been examined for second incident. please provide any additional information / documentation.*ak
Engine stalled losing all power while driving down road. this has occurred 4 times. vehicle has been worked on by dealer to attempt to solve this problem all 4 times. car must be pulled off of road (if possible) and restarted. the last time this occurred the car could not be pulled off of road and completely stopped on road. this is a very dangerous situation and someone is going to be hurt or killed if ford cannot correct this problem. *ak
Vehicle stalled wihtout warning while driving @~30mph. this has happened several other times on the road. dealer has performed repairs 3 other times as follows: visit 1 - changed fuel pump relay, visit 2 - changed ecm module relay, visit 3 - replaced fuel pump and sender. dealer service has indicated that they were unable to find exact cause of stalling, so they are replacing components in hopes of catching the problem. after vehicle stalled, power steering and brakes were non-functional and i once again needed to pull off the road evasively to avoid rear-ending the cars in front of me. clarification: this most recent stalling incident occured today, even after the fuel pump was replaced.*ak
My ford escape has stalled 3 times in the last 7 months. i am to the point where i am afraid to drive it. *ak
Vehicle had stalled twice at 35-40 mph. vehicle has not stalled since dealer replaced various parts. please list parts replaced by dealer. *ak
I've only had this car for two years and it died twice while driving on the road. one time on october 19, 2002 and another time on september 12, 2003. this car has also have problems with the sensors and pcm module.
Vehicle stalled while on a slight incline, power steering and brakes lost power, second time it has happened within a few months. very dangerous and could cause a bad accident. taking to dealer soon although they claim to never have heard anything like it happening to others. i have documentation of it being a very serious problem for many people, needs to be fixed asap. *ak
The engine on my ford escape stalled while accelerating on the on-ramp to enter a highway, going approximately 60 mph. i have now discovered this is a common problem with ford escapes, and hope the manufacturer will take steps to correct it. it can be a very dangerous situation. *ak
While traveling at 25mph consumer slowed down, and when trying to speed up, vehicle started to lose power. *ak
Twice, the stall almost caused an accident. due to loss of power brakes, we almst rearended the car in front of us the first time, and the second time we nearly went off the road into someones year -- across double yellow line on a backroad -- because of loss of power steering. *ak
Vehicle stalled while driving 40 mph. dealer could not find cause. *ak *tt
Engine stalled while driving around 35-40mph, avoiding rear-ending cars in front by evasively pulling off to side of road. vehicle has stalled before and was taken into dealer. dealer replaced fuel pump and ecm module relays at that time (2-3 months ago). however, vehicle stalled again tonight.
I bought my vehicle new ooon 08/18/01 as a demo w/ 5600 miles. on 10/22/01 my vehicle stalled for no reason on my way to work. i was going slightly downhill (not that steep of a hill) at approx 35mph. i lost power & my check engine, oil & battery lights came on. luckily i could pull over quickly. i turned the vehicle off & waited about 30 sec. it started no problem. i called the dealership that morning & was told there was nothing wrong with it but to call back should it happen again. on 10/24/01 the same thing happened again at the same point in my commute under the same circumstances. once again i was able to start the vehicle with no problems after pulling to the side of the road. i called the dealership again & took it in. of course they couldn't find anything wrong w/ it & the called the ford hotline for any recommendations. i brought it back the following week so they could replace the idle motor & a few other things. the dealership states there is no recall & it sounds like they don't even really know what it is or how to fix it, the hotline just recommended some things to do hoping it would fix it. shortly after that i noticed my vehicle was leaking fluid (11/15/01) about a week after an oil change. i took it back to the oil change place & they said it wasn't oil but i had a pretty big leak of what looked like transmission fluid. i immediately took it to the dealer. it ended up being differential fluid & they replaced the power transfer case. so far my vehicle hasn't stalled or leaked any other fluids. my biggest concern however, is the stalling problem which could potentially be very dangerous. i was lucky in that i wasn't on the highway & it was very early & i had a place to pull over so i didn't get hit. thank you for your attention to this matter. *ak
Stalling occurs without warning. has occurred on a bridge. i must coast across bridge, pull over, and restart the car. *ak

Vehicle has stalled twice at 35-40 mph while coasting down hill. dealer replaced computer module and ecc relay. nlm consumer states keyless entry works intermittently. the weather strips coming off on both back doors. the vacuum line was loose and hissing. the coolant light continues to come on due to coolant bottle failure, also there was a cracking noise under the dash and the radio went out. *yh

While driving, vehicle will stall without any warning. contacted dealer. cannot fix problem.*akjg
When driving or idling, my 2001 ford escape has stalled 7 times in the past three weeks. the auto has only 8600 miles. i first took it to the ford service shop, who replaced the air flow valve and the idle regulator, but this did not solve the problem. the car stalled again two days later. i returned the car to the shop without any help from the dealer because the shop could not duplicate the problem. i explained to the shop manager that i had read on the internet that a pcm relay could be the culprit. the frod delaer shop very hesitantly replaced the part today. i feel this is a very serious problem because i have almost been hit twice when the engine has stalled. i lose power steering and power brakes, thus losing control of the car. *ak
While driving at 35/45mph vehicle will stall out, losing all power. took vehicle back to dealership, they couldn't fix problem .they replaced vehicle.*ak

1) on two occasions the car's engine shut off while in traffic. i took the car back to the dealer after both incidences. the dealer was nice enough to look at the car right away on both occasions. the first time the told me that ford was aware of the problem and is working on a fix to the onboard computer. after the second incident i was told that the computer was upgraded and i should not experience the problem again. nontheless i would like to report this to your agency due to the seriousness of the defect and the possible consequences of such a failur on the highway. i was fortunate these past two occurences but other owners may not be. please look into thei matter for the good of all the other ford escape users and unsuspecting travellers who may be following a ford escape. 2) i would also like to report another unrelated problem with this car. several owners shared this concern on an internet user group. i am getting 12 mpg on the highway with this car while the posted highway mileage is 28 mpg. this is even less than the posten city mileage of 18 mpg. the dealer tested the city mileage by hooking up a cumputer and verified the cith mileage to be aroun 18 mpg. i have no problem with the city mileage i am getting. the highway mileage is way off and this should be investigated. it does not meet the government standards and does not meet the stated spcifications.*ak
Over a period of four months my ford escape has lost all power while driving in the am to work. it was very difficult to handle the car when it lost all power because of the loss of power steering. the first occurrence happened five days after i purchased the car. ford replaced the idle sensor and said it was fixed. four months later the problem occurred again. the car had to be towed in. ford claims that they "cannot replicate the problem" and their engineers don't know what's wrong with it but are aware of the problem in the escapes. i was offered a trade in at the loss of $6,700.00 or to call the 800 ford number and report the problem to them. the 800 number told me to put everything in writing and wait for a response (2-3 weeks). i am now in that stage of my complaint. this is a serious saftey hazard because i live in a city where there is heavy traffic and interstates are close by.
While coasting down slight grade at 35 mph, engine shuts off with no warning, stopped on side of road (required great effort to steer and brake), was almost rear-ended by following vehicles. put car in "park" and restarted w/o any problem (no engine stumble), drove 7 miles home without further problem, however i am afraid to drive it for fear of recurrence. i will have to drive it to the dealer tomorrow and hope it behaves long enough to get there.*ak
