Problems with 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 126 647 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to engage. the contact stated that the regenerative braking system disabled warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist because the vehicle was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

He hydraulic control unit failed on my vehicle. this seems to be an issue that has arisen with a great deal of owners of ford escape hybrids over the last several years. i had to have the entire hcu system replaced at a ford dealership service department. as it was not covered by warranty, nor considered by the company to be an issue deserving of a recall, i had to pay out of pocket for the entire thing, which totaled $4,863.00 (and it took five days to get the work completed). i also had to pay to rent a car for the several days it took to get the part and perform the work, which was another $200.00. due to the high cost of this repair and the frequency with which it is affecting consumers, i believe that this issue should become a recall and people should be reimbursed for the repairs they have had to make.

Approx. a year ago the brakes started failing. suddenly you had to pump them extra hard to stop. warning light appeared that tires need inflating. they did not. then an abs warning light appeared. suddenly the brakes started working again, no extra pumping needed. then at high speeds the warning light turned on and steering wheel shook violently and you couldn't go about 60 mph. ahhh! when you hit brakes they didn't respond or a terrible grinding noise happened. looked it up, common in this year's hybrid that abs brakes fail. only had 150k on it. took to local ford dealer, they wanted $7400 to fix. what? "proprietary abs brakes must be replaced." they wouldn't turn warning message off computer or do anything less. wouldn't check hoses, circuits, or pads. just a flat "$7400" with no explanation other than abs system. we found out through complaint sites online that others had the same problems. it's extremely harrowing to be driving at high speeds and have the car suddenly start shaking and the brakes not work!!

I am the original owner of this car and this is the third time my abs brakes have failed. i don't know the technical reason but my car does not stop properly in nine years the braking system should not fail three times.

This is my daughters car she got bought for her 18 birthday. not a year later and the whole abs system needs to be replaced for 5 grand and now the trade in value is worth 2200. the brakes fail. 10 years old and 5 grand to fix. tons of same stories of the same year on the net. i don't know how many people have died but i'm am sure someone will cause of this terribly designed system. now my daughter will be forced to go in debt at 18. this should be a recall. not because i'm an educated dumby, not because i pay my taxes every year and went above and beyond. because this is a safety issue. no way you have not received any complaints about this. i thought it was a joke. so this company manufactures vehicles that will have to be fixed before normal wear and tear destroys something and i guess a quota of dead people has to be met by failing brakes before taking it serious or i have to or my daughter just starting out in life has to go in debt more because we allow corporations to pull a pyramid scheme with vehicles. i'm not sure why i have to wonder why a recall has not been called on these vehicles with this hydraulic breaking system that has thus many complaints. maybe we should check how many people were forced thru ford or other dealerships to fix this exact problem. then there will be the evidence of deceptive manufacturing and advertising to generate cash flow. we know the brakes will fail and the engine and everything else will still be strong and it looks nice but they will be forced to go in debt to fix it cause anyone that owns this will only have one car typically. scam using safety and life as leverage. exactly what happens, brakes fail, every time coming to a stop from any speed. have to stand on them to stop. my daughter is working and going to school full time. what an american rip off.

My problem with this vehicles brakes is similar to other complaints i have seen on this forum. sometimes i have no problem with the brakes, but about half the time after staring the car the abs light comes on allong with regen brakes not working and to get the vehicle to stop requires stomping break pedal to the floor. when it first happened it almost caused me to roll past a stop sign and into on coming traffic. it is obviously a serious safety issue if the brakes randomly stop working. the repair shop of course could not duplicate the problem as the brakes were working fine then. most likely though, the culprit is in the hydraulic braking system, hence the 'regen braking' note that comes on.

Pending failure of the hydraulic brake control unit. abs, check engine and service brake lights would come on and go off. when lights are on the vehicle is more difficult to stop. reading other's posts online, this seems to be an issue that happens often. vehicle is unsafe to drive once failure is present. only way to fix is with a $4,500 part that you have to get new from ford....

Abs light came on and dash said regen brakes disabled. there was no power brakes and car had a very hard time stopping and narrowly missed hitting the car in front of me. took it to a shop and it needs abs pump which costs over $7000 to replace.

The computer checks the brakes upon start and the computer is falsely detecting an error with the hydraulic brake pump periodically. it can occur 1 in every 50 starts to sometime 5 attempts in every 1 good start. the computer if it sees an error will disable the regenerative brakes and the vehicle will brake significantly slower and less efficiently when in error mode. the computer glitch requires a total replacement and must be reprogrammed at the dealer at a cost of $4 to $5 thousand. based on the thousands i see online with the same issue and nature of issue (brakes and safety), i am surprised to see a recall has not been mandated. the cost is beyond reasonable and i am left with driving an unsafe car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving 70 mph, the hydraulic brakes failed to work without warning. the contact was able to drive slowly to the independent mechanic a mile away (arnolds oil company, 466 old us rte 52, new richmond, oh 45157) where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic brakes needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer (beechmont ford, 600 ohio pike, cincinnati, oh 45245, (513) 752-6611) stated that there were no recalls. the manufacturer was contacted at 800-392-3673 and advised the contact to call nhtsa. a case number was not provided. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000. the vin was not available. ...updated 10/19/17 *bf updated 10/27/2017*js

While approaching an intersection at 45mph with a stop signal brake pedal went to the floor with little to no braking effect. got stopped in the middle of intersection without hitting anything or being hit. yellow abs and red brake lights illuminated. ford dealership reports that vehicle needs new hbcu @ $5000. multiple car forums with same exact issue. so far no one killed and ford will not admit any problems or try to satisfy customers with a fix. i have now reached out to you for help and make this issue a matter of documentation with the nhstb. please get involved before this gets ugly.

The abs and brake lights come on and the brake regeneration disabled is displayed on dash. when this happens there is a loss of braking power. this happens when driving. when i researched this i found this is a common problem. it calls for the ecu to be replaced and the repair is $5,000. ford needs to recall and replace this part as it is a safety concern due to brake failure.

Loss of brake function while driving. abs warning light illuminates during driving. warning message "check brake system" warning message "regen braking disabled" at times need to press brake very hard just to have the vehicle slowly roll to a stop. occasionally, the parking brake light is illuminated and almost feels like it is partially engaged, even though i did not depress the parking brake pedal. i've researched on the internet and there are hundreds of complaints about this same exact problem - many on the 2008 escape hybrid itself, but many on other escape years as well. ford denies this as a problem. i spoke to both my dealer and ford corporation - they say they haven't heard about any braking problems on the escape hybrids -they lie through their teeth. maybe nhtsa can make them own up to their problem before someone really gets hurt - or worse.

Regan brakes system fails with no warning making stopping almost impossible shut vech off and maybe problem goes away maybe not.when starting brake system light on dash stays on which makes no brakes or light goes out and may come on later with no warning there are many many complaints involving 2008 hybrids looking at all complaints it seems ford knows about failure but wont fix we have been told it was made that way and will cost 4000-5000 thousand dollars for consumer to fix

2008 ford escape hydraulic control unit failure. check brake system, abs, and emergency brake lights all game on. drove car with limited brakes to mechanic who got codes c1978 and u2023. $4,700 part. this seems very dangerous and really disappointed that ford has not done a recall on this item.

Check brakes and "abs" lights came on, then "regenerative brake system disabled" illuminated, warning sounded. took car for repair. mechanic performed diagnostic, then bled all 4 brake systems. lights went off and brakes worked. several days later, same lights came on and warning bell sounded. brakes were almost completely inoperable. returned car to mechanic. inspected, then told it might need regenerative brake system replacement. warning lights were off, but illuminated again a couple of hours later (02/22/17) took car to autofair ford, manchester, nh.where brakes failed while entering dealership at 15 mph. they kept car overnight, spent 4 hours labor, bled brakes, and said car was fixed (charged $280). couple hours later all lights illuminated, warning bell sounded and lost almost all braking capacity while on highway 93 south heading south towards boston. called ford and they told me that car needed new regenerative braking system and computer module. cost of equipment alone was quoted at approx. $6000 without labor. am in the process of trading the car. without functional brakes, car is virtually worthless. when brakes were depressed to the floor at low speeds, brakes did not stop car; vehicle coasted to a stop. in short, 2008 ford escape hybrid suffered catastrophic brake failure.

Yellow abs light and red emergency brake lights illuminated while driving. brake petal went soft to the point where braking was difficult. a ford service center diagnosed the problem and indicated that the hydraulic control unit (hcu) needs to be replaced. the part costs $4800 dollars and the total repair is $5300. this is not an uncommon problem for the escape hybrid. and in my case, renders the vehicle essentially worthless since the cost of the repair is slightly more than the value of tahe vehicle itself. i've been given no alternatives or options. *tt *cn

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. when the vehicle was started, the abs, service brakes, and regenerative brake disabled warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 160,000. the vin was unavailable.

Brakes can fail without warning after the abs light comes on. there is no warning and no secondary backup system. the abs module failure is the result, which will make the vehicle have no brakes. the repair cost is $5,000 and must be done at the dealer. the dealer also witnessed the no brakes while driving. *tt *as

With frequent breaking i get break lights warning sign/sound and occasional abs sign/sound. if that occurs, my breaks sink to the floor needing an extra effort to stop the car. upon turning the engine off and then on, the problem disappears. however the light come again during a frequent breaking in a rush hour traffic. this situation become quite scary and i am afraid of loosing control of the vbehicle and cause an accident. on perusing thru the internet, i fount that many other owners of escape hybrid 2005 on experience the same problems and are advised to change the master cylinder and hydraulic control unit with a cost in excess o $7000.00. that the estimate given to me an many other escape hybrid owners. there needs to be a recall on this issues before people start dying, just from the driver's panic reaction alone. ford co. so far refuses to issue a recall or address this problem from the top management. since my invoice includes personal information, i suggest you contact len stoler ford directly

Vehicle brakes fail for no apparent reason, then eventually begin working for no apparent reason. no warning is given that anything is wrong with the brakes (i.e. no brake light, and no "check engine" light). in addition, the "all ok" light remains green, indicating that nothing is wrong. this occurs when the vehicle is moving at any speed (i.e above 35 mph or below 5 mph). the vehicle eventually comes to a stop, but only after a lengthy deceleration distance.*updated 3-7-17 i would see a warning that says 'regen brake failure.' in some cases, depressing the pedal would cause the brakes to lock-up. in other cases, the vehicle would slow down gradually, but would never stop even if the brake pedal was fully pressed. in the second situation, i would bypass my intended stop point, often a turn. the situation would occur without warning and last until i turned off the car. it sometimes went away after restarting, meaning the brakes would function as expected. the dealer diagnosed the problem and said i needed to replace the hydraulic control module and several brake lines. estimated cost was $6200. i contacted ford to inquire about a recall, and was told that none exists for this situation.*smch

Abs & parking brake warning lights, warning tone & regen brake message are displayed. when this has happened the brake performance became "grabby" and over time the brakes were dangerously bad. for several months if i stopped the vehicle, turned off ignition and restarted, the warnings would go away and the brakes would function normally.i informed the ford technician the last time i had regular service of this problem and they found " no issue" with brakes. i took vehicle back to ford 06/22/2017 and they told me the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced at a cost in excess of $5,800.00. i will discard this vehicle and replace it with a non -ford product

Ive had reoccurring issues with my brakes ,abs system , power train , steering column starter. over the course of three years and it seem like the problems keep coming up . the only close call i remembers is coming home from work . making a turn on to a street, then all of a sudden my power steering went out completely. i could have crashed if a huge curb wasnt there .

The abs light and "regen brake failure" warning lights go on and vehicle is almost impossible to stop. *tt *cn

I was driving around town and all of a sudden the brake pedal wouldn't go down, i tried again and the regenerative braking wasn't working, only felt about half power brakes. the abs light came on and a red light that said check braking system. i pulled over and turned the car off. restarted the car back to normal.

I have experienced an unusual problem with the braking system in my 2008 ford escape hybrid. i have experienced several episodes while braking of the yellow abs and the red brake warning lamp lighting up and the display saying "regen brakes disabled" over the past year. when this happens the brakes are slow to stop the car with a jerking action. all of my failures have happened while driving in town. once i ended up in the middle of an intersection before the car came to a complete stop. the only way i could correct the issue would be to stop the car, depress the brake pedal hard to the floor, then shut off the vehicle. i would then restart my car and the brakes would then return to normal operation. i have researched this issue on line and have found hundreds of people posting complaints about the same issue. all complaints are from owners of feh's 2005 to 2008. why hasn't this life safety issue been addressed? from what i have read, the repair could be from $3000 to $7000 dollars. i don't understand why there hasn't been a recall. or has there been. please advise. dl

86,000 milage. abs sevice light on for couple months. past 2 days regen brakes disabled message on, and red brake warning light on, brakes a little stiff in operation thus far. apparently this is a frequent problem, and $5000 to fix. can i rely on the mechanical backup braking? even if so i am now not charging my hv battery, so will be just carrying around a heavy load, with no benefit to the co2 environment. when will ford be required to recal & remedy this?

The abs brake system warning lights come on service brakes now in message center my wife drives the vehicle with my children and at times the brake pedal goes to the floor vehicle doesn't stop when this occurs this is a ongoing problem with the ford escape hybrid since 2005 i think these abs hcu should be a recall due to the danger and the cost to repair this problem because of defective brake parts. *tt the consumer stated the vehicle was replaced. *tr

When driving, abs light goes on, check brake system shown on dashboard panel, when i slow down (very slow, like in a parking lot) i can feel something underneath the car engage, and then the abs light warning go out. *tr

Last week i went outside and got in my car to run some errands and when i started the car the red brake light, orange abs light, and the chimer stating "regenerative brake disengaged" "check brakes" began to light. the brakes are working (knock on wood) but are tricky to operate. this morning i took the car to the mechanic and they stated it was most likely in need of a new hcu costing around $5,000 (i am going to get the vehicle checked one more time before parking it for good). as i read the complaints on nhtsa's web site, it appears folks at nhtsa are fully knowledgeable about this safety hazard (as each page is filed with same, if not worse, complaints) and are not going to act until someone gets killed. it is also blatantly obvious that ford is not going to act either. the 2008 escape hybrid has been a great vehicle, until now (132,000 miles). the price to fix this issue is slightly less than what the car is worth and compared to all other brands made it very few miles. now it is time to turn my outrage regarding this issue over to my state representatives. i cannot believe their are no class action lawsuits before someone gets killed (it is a matter of time, if not already the case). this issue should warrant a recall, they are brakes for god's sake. *tt *bf *tr

Was driving the vehicle and after applying the brakes. the abs warning light came on, plus the information display indicated "check brake system" and "regen brake disabled". i was still able to brake, but needed to apply more pressure to stop and there was a new noise when i depressed the brakes. i took the vehicle to my local ford dealer, the service associate took it for a test drive and noticed the noise and need for extra pressure on the brakes. after the technician had checked the vehicle they indicated that i needed a new hcu unit and the estimated cost was $5,200+ *tt *tr

The brakes stopped working and the warning was "regen brakes disabled". i was told this was a defect and ford was not covering the cost of fixing, which is $5,000-7,000. we bought the vehicle new and it has a bit over 130,000 miles and is in great shape otherwise. we can't fix it, sell it or drive it.

On august 4, 2016, the "check abs" light came on. i brought the car to the mechanic and they said the rotor is rusted so they replaced the right and left front rotor and the right front brake disc pad. the mechanic was unable to get any of the warning signs to appear so he thought everything was okay. two weeks later, the "check abs" light came on again, and about 10 minutes after that the "regen brakes disabled" light came on. this was in the middle of driving on the highway so there wasn't much i could do. i noticed that every time i braked, the car felt like it was wobbling from side to side. i took the car back to the same mechanic the next morning, and he spent two days running tests on the diagnostics and saw two codes: 1) right front wheel and 2) communications inside module. the mechanic bled the brakes and tried to test drive the vehicle and almost ran into cars in the parking lot due to brake failure. thus he strongly recommended that i have the car towed. finally, i had it towed to the dealership since he said it is not safe to drive. the dealership confirmed that the abs control module/hydraulic control unit needs to be replaced, which they are quoting at $4600. i am thankful that i made it to the mechanic and realized there was a problem before getting into a crash. this happened very rapidly and i was in some serious danger. i got lucky, and others may be less fortunate than me. i have read numerous stories on car forums and this thread and i cannot believe there hasn't been a recall on this yet. i think there should be an investigation and i am willing to provide the required documentation and share my story to bring attention to this issue, and hopefully prevent someone else from getting hurt.

One morning, no prior warning, or issues with brakes or mechanical systems what so ever, i start to drive to work and after turning out of my neighborhood onto a major street my brake lights light up and at the next stop sign my brakes don't work! i pressed all the way down and ended up using the emergency brake not to go through the stop sign. someone could have died for sure, and it was a heart stopping scare! i pulled over and walked back home. looked up online and found many complaints about this vehicles brakes suddenly going out and that it is a $5k fix!! i had the escape towed back to my house. the next morning i wanted to try a few things to eliminate certain problems i found online. now, the keyless entry doesn't work, i manually open the door, stick the key in, no lights, no sound, nothing. i turn the key and again absolutely nothing. we hook up cables and it starts right away and everything works. no brake warning lights so i try a slow drive in the neighborhood, brake lights go on after about 1/2 a mile and the brakes are very soft, have to depress to the floor just to slow down from 15 mph. i called ford and they said just bring it in for diagnosis, for $200/hr minimum 2 hours just to tell me what's wrong with it!! no thank you, $400 to tell me it's a $5k problem when the car's worth maybe $6k private party! so i now have a worthless hybrid sitting in my driveway. do not buy a 2008 ford escape hybrid!!! read all the complaints major safety issue - ford has not recalled!! *tr

Abs light, regen light check, brake light and emergency brake lights came on and brakes failed and worked in degraded mode. brought to dealer, they advised recalibration and internal bleed procedure, abs module reflash and calibration, which was performed at a cost of $221.49 advised if code returns , hcu replacement will be needed at $5400.!!!! outrageous, the car was bought new and maintained meticulously. car now has 79,397 and we are deathly afraid to drive it as the brakes may fail. when the brakes failed the car was restarted on the peaking lot after being stopped for 15 minutes

Electro-hydraulic brake (ehb) system had a leak in the master cylinder and the abs brakes engaged while driving causing the brakes to smoke.

P2803 & p2800 sensors..both sensors are defective and the cost to repair is far above fair pricing. hydraulic control approx cost to repair 4100.00 dollars. this is ununfair repair costs. this vehicle has been maintained with above average care and has not been misused. checking web site have found that this is not an uncommon problem with this model. public should be warned about this defect in this model and a possible recall should me made.

My car was sitting and i went to start it and the "regen brakes disabled" and "check brake system" came across my dash. its a long story but i took it to courtesy ford in okemos, mi and they said that the hydraulic control until needed to be replaced, this part would cost me $4,620.20 to replace. i have only owned this for just over a year.i owe $10,080.00 on this vehicle, i cannot get a loan to fix it and courtesy ford said they would only give me $3,700 for it! i am a single mother of 2 and cannot afford to fix this vehicle! i emailed ford and they said they cannot do anything about it or help me out fixing it. i am without a vehicle and stuck with a $10,000 debt!!! ford needs to recall the hybrids due to their faulty part not to mention it it unsafe to drive. the dealership told me that it is not safe to drive so it sits there. i am outraged and sickened at ford. they need to be held responsible for their faulty part. i am not able to get to work, i am going to loose my job and my house because of ford. *js

When starting the car parked and sometimes when driving, "check brake system / regen brakes disabled" message appears along with abs light. car loses most of its braking power from the regenerative brakes requiring a great deal of pressure on the brake pedal to stop the car. braking power is reduced and stopping distances increasing substantially, causing near misses in heavy traffic. dealer recommends replacing the abs control unit, which is a $4,100 part (plus labor) for an 8 year old vehicle. thus, the only way to fix the issue is to pay more for parts and labor than the car is actually worth, rendering it worthless to the owner. this has happened multiple times over the course of two months. sometimes the problem goes away and the car can be driven short distances with all of its braking power, sometimes it doesn't work for days at a time.

I had the check brake system warning suddenly come on when i started the car; also told me the regenerative braking system was off. the brakes worked, but were "mushy" and car seemed to be more difficult to stop; it took a longer distance and took more pressure on the brake pedal. the last few miles per hour seemed the poorest in stopping power. now that i think about it, the brakes had not seemed as "crisp" for several weeks. took it too klaben ford and they told me the hydraulic control unit needed replacing. i did this, but it was over $5000 for the repair (with labor).

2008 ford escape hybrid with 109k miles on it. two recent incidents where the yellow abs and red brake lights came on, with messages of check brake system and regen brakes disabled. brakes became completely useless and vehicle became dangerous to operate. i was able to let the vehicle sit and retry and the lights didn't come on. brought in for service at dealership and they found codes c1478 and c1480. they're quoting me $5,300 to replace the hydraulic control unit. after the dealer diagnosed the problem, the check brake system warning message is on all the time and the vehicle has no brakes. i've left it at the dealership because it is no longer safe to drive. looking online, there are others that have experienced this problem: http://www.greenhybrid.com/forums/f26/brakes-broke-bank-24731/ http://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/5850/ford/escape-hybrid/ford-escape-hybrid-brake-problems http://blog.yagelski.com/2012/02/ford-escape-hybrid-brake-master.html there are 23 identical complaints this year alone at nhtsa's odi webpage (safercar.gov) why isn't there a recall for this problem?

When driving at 35 mph the brake warning came on. i pulled over because i thought maybe the emergency brake was on, stopped, applied the emergency brake and released it, but the warning was still on. in a few miles, i arrived at my destination, checked the brake fluid level and it was fine. on the way home i got the check brake system, regen brakes disabled, abs light error. the brakes feel spongy and it takes a lot of error to stop the vehicle. the dealer has given us an estimate of $4700 to fix the problem. i see there are a lot of complaints on the internet about this same problem with the ford escape hybrids and can't believe there hasn't been a recall!

I was driving with family. i applied the brakes and it went totally flat. the abs and check brakes light illuminated. the brakes are currently totally unoperational. i took car in for repairs, told that a new abs control module(hybrid ecu & hcu) required - cost $4000.

I was driving in a residential neighborhood, approximately 35 mph, straight road with a slight downhill slope. as i pressed the brakes, the pedal would not move. i released pressure and pressed again. an extreme amount of effort was needed to press the brakes (brakes now in safe/manual mode). i got an abs light, brake light, and check brake system warning. after i stopped, i pulled over shut down the motor, waited a minute, and restarted. after restart, brakes world normally. this has also happed several times within the past 6 months.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving various speeds, the check abs warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. in addition, the vehicle became difficult to stop when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated because the check abs warning light was not illuminated at the time. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Regen brake disable light estimate for repair is $4700.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel shook without warning. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed and the abs warning indicator illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 134,000.

Was driving down highway 35 in downtown dallas when coming down hill went to hit brakes and brakes went all the way to the floor an we had no brakes. information center was showing that brakes had been disabled and i pumped the brakes and was able to slow car down enough to keep from colliding with car in front of us. limped home in car with no brakes at times pulled over in parking lot turned car off an upon turning it back on car reset itself an we had brakes for a small amount of time because incident occurred again. took car to dealership an was told the abs hcu was bad an needed to be replaced which is a 4500 part and we had just bought the car a week before. ford needs to be forced to recall these vehicles because in other forums other drivers are experiencing same issues with brake lines and master cylinders and this part the abs hcu

Went shopping on a saturday, 4/4/15. came out to my car and started it. abs light and brake light came on, along with messages stating, "service brakes soon" and "regen brakes disabled". brakes were sensitive and unpredictable, but car didn't need any extra effort to stop. hydraulic control unit made noise when applying brakes, like a stripped gear sound. took car to a reputable mechanic with an updated modis. checked codes and came up with a dozen codes. ( p1a0d, p1a0e, p1a0f, p1a10, p1a14, u0418, c1321, u2023, c1475, b2172, p0a0a, p1a0a) also, when he tried to get certain tests to work, these errors came up: (an error occurred 34 (0x22) [#155] (manual msg - ford (can) hybrid brake system air bleed check) (test has aborted error 22 - conditions not correct. cycle key and retry.) after doing these tasks and not being able to complete them, any assistance towards braking was gone. the car reverted to fail safe mode and required much more effort to stop. it took the mechanic much more time and persistence, but he was finally able to go through his tests and cleared the codes and reset the brake system. as of now, everything works as it should. there's only one problem. nothing was actually a confirmed fix. the is no guarantee the braking system won't give out again. i'm more than certain it will and i don't like taking chances with my vehicle. judging how other hybrid escape owners have reported on this problem, i guess i feel a little lucky the brakes didn't give out while driving. yet. who knows when they will and what will happen when they do. i cannot afford to fix this problem, as i've heard it's over $4000. i also cannot sell it as-is in good conscience. i am at a loss here as i agree with others that this is a major safety concern and something should be done way before something tragic happens. *tr

Often when starting my car, the abs light and brake light comes on and a message says regen brakes disabled. the brakes are weak when driving in this state. when i turn the car off and back on, the error usually goes away and the brakes work normally. occasionally, the error occurs while driving and the brakes get weak, and i pull over and turn car off and on to clear the error. it has been happening with increasing frequency. the dealer had never heard of the problem and said the diagnostic codes did not give clear action for fixing it. the dealer replaced the brake pads and rotors for $850 but the error continued. now they recommend replacing the entire abs module and hydraulic control unit for $5200. i have seen many other complaints describing this dangerous defect. i think ford should issue a recall or offer some payment for this expensive repair. *tr
