We have classified the 130 complaints from 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 about STEERING into the following categories.
The ball joints were replaced when i purchased the truck, the complete front tie rods as a kit were replaced this week now to get a wheel alignment i have to replace the lower intermediate shaft on the steering column? i went to dodge and was told the steering shaft is available but would not work as i needed to replace the upper as well as it is no longer available that dodge upgraded the item? the total cost would be $600+ for both? if the steering components for driving have been upgraded and the original is no longer made available why is this not a recall? if the u-joint fails the truck is going to be unsteer able? why was an upgrade done and no one informed? why does the cost go to me when i should be able to buy the oem section that was made in 2004? it is discontinued every where on line for purchase. there fore there is a defect or issue that has been identified and not shared with the public!
At highway speeds of 70mph after hitting the slightest of bumps or bridge joints the front end of the truck would violently shake so bad that i couldn't control it and sent the truck sideways almost flipping it and hitting a tractor trailer but thank god i didnt. my wife and kids were driving it and at 60 hit a bump and she also almost wrecked it with our kids in the truck! its been in the shop and at this point im paying someone else to own it. im a ford guy and stepped out to try something different and am now wasting my hard earned money and im pissed. i want my f250 back.
Death wobble at highway speed.
My truck is only used for towing a fifth wheel, thus the low mileage. on a trip, the truck stalled with no warning on the freeway, lost power, power brakes and power steering in the 2nd from right lane. i was barely able to pull it over and stop, in an unsafe area. 4 hrs later a tow for truck and 5th wheel was arranged. the tacoma dodge dealer replaced the lift fuel pump with an in tank lift fuel pump. apparently the block mounted pump "always fails around 70k miles", which is what my truck has logged. the heat kills the pump. i paid $2106.47 for the repair. the new pump failed in less than 6 months or 2k miles. the everett dwayne lane dealer has the truck now for two weeks, and cannot get the warranted pump replaced for another 2 weeks due to back order from mopar. i believe the pump to be a defect causing extreme safety hazard, as no warning loss of power steering and brakes are affected. seniors often drive rv's, many would not be able physically to handle the rig with this failure. eventually a death will occur, and probably many already have that i am unware of. recall should be immediate. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *cw *tr

Problem known commonly as "death wobble". out of control vehicle when hitting a pot hole at speed around 55 -65 mph. must slow down to control the wheel.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 2500. while driving 50 mph or more, the vehicle wobbled and swayed from left to right. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing; however, the specific details of the diagnosis could not be provided. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v528000 (steering). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 145,800.
Traveling in a residential road at 30 mph and hit a small bump in the road which caused uncontrollable violent feedback from steering wheel and forced my vehicle into the median. i purchased new shocks and dual steering stabilizer to possibly remedy the problem to no avail. i dropped vehicle at galeana dodge of ft myers florida after viewing multiple recalls pertinent to my situation. they called and said that the recall only includes an inspection. even after my explanation of not being able to drive over 30 mph because of regularly occurring "death wobble" i was told that there is nothing they can do regarding the multiple recalls. i feel that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and the manufacturer, through galeana dodge, should replace all the fault prone steering components. the dodge ram 2500 is currently at the dealer awaiting my pickup.

Takata recall. dealer said parts are not available to complete the recall. also needs steering linkage recall done. dealer wants to do them all at once.
I was driving it home from the dealership, on a back road, going about 40 mph. i hit a bump, the whole front end started bouncing uncontrollably. like it was hit with a jack hammer! i ended up off the road! as i got out and was looking to see what happened, a guy stopped behind me. he got out, and said he has the same truck with the same problem. he's never seen it happen before, only experienced it first hand. he said it looked like the wheels were going different directions! i didn't see anything wrong tho. the lug nuts and everything were tight.it even passed inspection this morning! i looked online and it said to start online here to document the complaints.
Front end shakes violently after hitting bump in roadway at normal speeds, almost uncontrollable, whats is dodge doing top rectify problem, been ongoing for years
Driving down the highway on 4/10/16 hit a small bump and truck started shaking uncontrollably with steering wheel shaking back and forth. stepped on brakes to regain control and was nearly back ended. once vehicle got below 30 mph it disappeared. not the first time this has happened.
The tie rod busted multiple times on the truck while turning the steering linkage wobbled to be replaced multiple times i repaired twice and went through all the protocol for reimbursement documents visits to dealership confirmed parts with reimbursement dept spent my lunch breaks day after day being put on hold told i would get call back over and over what is next step right is right and i am very right to be disappointed in the safety of my truck

I have been on a waiting list with our local dodge dealership to get my recalls repaired for several months. every time i call they just say i am on the list and they are too busy. i keep receiving notices in the mail and would like to get these taken care of as there are now several recalls that need to be addressed. i also just found out from the website here that this same dealership did not fully complete my last recall repair. dealership is allen samuels dodge in waco, texas.
I was driving down i-15 at approximately 70mph and hit a small bump in the road. the front end started bouncing uncontrollably. had to completely stop in traffic, which almost resulted in a big accident. this is not the first time this has happened. i was in traffic on monday this week as well and the same thing happened twice at slower speeds and on both of these occasions was almost hit by an 18 wheeler. i am a female and trying to hold on to the steering wheel while it jerked violently back and forth was almost not doable. when is dodge going to be held responsible for making a safe truck for us to drive? my mechanic told me that just about all of these trucks have this same issue and they won't fix it unless it cracks. this is not safe for drivers anywhere. is it going to take a serious accident or death to get something done about this problem?
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 2500. while driving approximately 65 mph over a speed bump, the steering wheel vibrated severely. the vibrating stopped when the contact jerked the steering wheel to the left or right. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
Deathwobble, traveling down interstate and hit a bump, the truck started shaking so violently and getting progressively worse. the only way to get it to stop was to hit the brakes and slow down very fast. with 18 wheelers all over the road when it happened i was almost rear ended on the interstate. i have never been so terrified of driving a vehicle in my life! my family was with me. dodge has come out with an "upgrade kit and new heavier duty steering box" hmmmm...wonder why? because they are completely aware of the issue and there is no quick fix. i am told i need to replace ball joints, tie rods, steering box, steering stabilizer and get stiffer shocks and or springs. meanwhile, $5000.00 later, it may work? maybe?
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 2500. while reversing into the garage, the throttle body detached. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 150,000. updated 8/19/15*cn the consumer also stated the tie rod broke, the u-joints and upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced. updated 08/25/15*jb
I was driving at about 65mph and suddenly the truck and steering began vibrating and shaking violently until i pulled over and stopped. it felt like all four tires had blown out. i called my local dodge dealer service department and they told me the problem was most likely the "death wobble". i had never heard this and he also said to change the steering dampener, which i did. this violent vibration has happened again on two other occasions since the stablizer shock was replaced. i will not drive on the highway any longer with my truck due to this serious safety/sterring/suspension issue that very easily could cause serious bodily harm/death due to possible accident.
Driving home i hit a pot hole at 65 miles an hour when the trucks front end started shaking violently. i had to slow down to about 35 miles an hour to get control. its been a regular occurrence ever since. i have taken it to the dealership and they say nothing is wrong. i have researched and spent over $1000.00 on parts. apparently it is a common problem with dodge known as the "death wobble" that dodge fails to acknowledge or take responsibility for. *tr

Otherwise known as the "dodge death wobble". the approximate incident date is the last time it occurred because i can't remember when the first time was. i attempted to have this issue resolved/ repaired by chrysler multiple times just to get the runaround every time. this last time 02/16/2015, they had me driving 30 minutes to their shop, in treacherous driving conditions caused by 5 inches of sleet and snow received the night before. then they ended up wasting over 3 hours of my time/day by not doing any work at all to my truck the whole time it sat in their shop and tried to make me pay in excess of $575 for any work they was going to do. i had already rebuilt the entire front end in mid 2013 and in 2014 i dumped $10000 into rebuilding the engine because it blew 4 of the 6 compression rings for some reason, i can't afford to rebuild the whole front end.......again. this is a seriously dangerous issue and has had hundreds of complaints about it. there is even a class action lawsuit over it. chrysler knows there is a problem and has the parts to fix it, so why won't they just do it? doesn't chrysler care about the safety of their customers? *tr
I purchased this truck brand new. in the last year or two we have experienced steering problems. have had it in for repair. the problem is when you are traveling at 65 mph or faster and for no reason the front end starts to shimmy and vibrate uncontrollably until you slow down below about 40 mph. so far we have avoided a wreck but i am afraid to allow my family to drive the truck for fear this will happen when they are driving and cause a crash. checking online i find this to be a very prevalent problem in the dodge trucks called the "death wobble". i hope nobody has been injured or killed due to this problem but i can certainly see how it can happen. i have placed front end stabilizers on my truck to stop the problem to the tune of $900 but it only masks the onset of the problem.. this is a factory defect in the way the trucks are built and someone needs to do something.. soon...... *tr

In july 2014, traveling along a 2 lane highway, we hit a bump in the road and the truck started to violently shake to the point where we had to come to a complete stop on the road. scared the entire family as we got out to see if we had a tire failure. nothing seemed out of the ordinary. continued on the vacation and had it occur 3-5 more times while in the truck. while on vacation, had the steering damper(stabilizer) and rotated the tires but that did not fix the problem. upon return home, took it to a non-chrysler service center as the local dodge dealer was 3 weeks out on getting the truck in. they replaced both upper and lower tie rods joints, wheel bearings and aligned the vehicle. $2000 approximate cost plus the steering stabilizer and no fix. took the truck on another extended trip on 4/3 and had it occur again. when i called chrysler dealer today (4/6), the service advisor was unaware of any problems with this truck and advised me to bring it in which i will do next week. it still has the passenger air bag recall out on it. all previous recalls have been inspected by chrysler service centers. this is a very dangerous situation and i fear that allowing the truck on the highway dangers not only me and my family but other motorists traveling near us. *tr

When driving if engine stops running on my cummings diesel you can not steer at all and the brakes do not work theirs no way anyone could push the brake peddle down what you do then is push parking brake then shift to neutral then start engine hopefully
Driving on the turnpike and had accelerated to speed between 65 and 70 mph when right front tire went across seam in concrete roadway. was not a big bump have passed over it since and before in car and never felt it. suddendly truck went into an uncontrollable "wobble" very severe with my gearshift moving from side to side as if going to fly off. i had to brake suddenly almost causing a rearend collision and i took up two lanes getting it under controll also nearly having a wreck! this happens often at speeds near the same. i either have to keep it below 50 but lately the speed level is beginning to drop and i can experience the problem at lower speeds! it is dangerous. i dare not allow my wife to drive the vehicle. also have a problem every time it rains i get leaking from my cab clearance lights.
Going down i94 i drove over a very small pot hole and the truck started to violently shake almost causing me to loss control. i slowed down to 45 on a posted 70mile freeway during rush hour to get it under control. it has happened 2 times scents. the truck is at the shop now.if u look at the internet there are many people with is problem called death wobble and it is not a easy fix dodge needs to be held responsible before someone gets hurt. *tr

The left tie rod broke driving down the road causing a hole in my rim, dents in the fender and bumper and damage to the left braking system. i had the vehicle towed to the dealer after learning about this recall, the dealer fixed the broken tie rod but dodge will not cover any damage left on my truck. it needs a new rim and dodge stated that they will now be paying for my rim to get fixed, which was fine before this incident. I received a safety recall notice (n62/nhtsa 13v-528) to have the tie-rod end replaced on my vehicle. i contacted chrysler and they brought it in to confirm the recall was needed. it was and they put the parts on order. chrysler supplies my dealership with one set of parts at a time. it takes about two weeks to complete the process per vehicle. i am number 360 something in line to get this repair. at this rate my repair will be completed in about 14 years which i believe is a failure to remedy this defect within a "reasonable time". i am forced to repair the part at my own expense. the notice told me i could submit the receipt for reimbursement but only if i had it repaired already before the recall notice. this seems like a tactic by chrysler to avoid monetary or legal responsibility for the defect. they told me that they were not telling people not to drive their vehicle but doing so was "at the drivers discretion", releasing themselves from liability if a failure occurred. *tr

This has been recalled and was notified in december 2013, that parts and service would be available at local dodge/chrysler dealerships. i have contacted two different dealerships, lewis ford chrysler dodge fayetteville, ar. and everett dodge in springdale ar. and was added to there list for repair. it is now june and no response so far. this vehicle is used to tow a horse trailer and there is safety concerns. the response from the dealerships, was that they do not have the part and are waiting, so why is it, it can be ordered and available for purchase with no problems by myself. *tr
