The driveshaft came loose from the rearend. it was preceded by a slight whirring noise which appeared to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. the whirring noise was only present for a short period and was only heard on deceleration. upon acceleration, there was no noise. immediately before the driveshaft let loose, there was a louder whirring noise, some jerking, and then the lack of connection between the transmission and rearend. *tr the differential was locked up and the wheels would not move forward. the speed when this happened was approximately 20 mph. the repair has not been done as of 7/2/2014. if anyone from the nhtsa would like to inspect the vehicle due to the recent investigation into this model and problem, they are welcome to do so. *tr

Last saturday on june 28 2014 i was leaving my residence when i observed a small leak dripping out of my rear differential where the pinion gear goes into the differential. i ordered a pinion seal at my local auto parts store. on my way to the parts store i noticed a very faint whine coming from the rear end. about 1 to 2 miles after the whine was first noticed it quickly became a roar for no more than 20 seconds and then the pinion gear snapped at the differential locking both my rear tires up sending my truck sideways. with my son in the back seat it was a very frightening experience for a 2 year old. i couldn't move the truck out of the middle of the street so i sat helplessly and waited for a tow truck. the next day i looked underneath the truck and realized that along with my rear end being toasted so was my drive shaft which had damage from spinning freely. then i observed my gas tank with a dent so big i have no choice but to purchase a new tank. so far i have been quoted for a used rear differential at several salvage yards from 800-1400. it's ridiculous that this problem continues with dodge trucks and nothing is being done about it. is it going to take someone loosing there life because negligence from dodge to get these problems fixed and hold dodge accountable!!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge ram 1500. while driving 35 mph, the rear driveshaft became detached from the vehicle without warning. the vehicle was towed to a private mechanic, who stated that the driveshaft and rear end needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 1,020.
Rear differential failed. *tr
While driving on a side street going no more than 25 miles an hour i suddenly the ability to drive my truck. it spun out a total of 3 times before going over a curb and hitting a tree. it was determined that there was a complete failure of the rear axle and i could not of controlled or caused the accident. *tr
While driving the truck on the highway doing about 45-50mph with my 6 month old baby in the truck, the rear wheels locked up and sent the driveshaft flying out from under the truck, the truck then fishtailed into the woods. the truck was towed to a mechanic shop, where i was told the pinion nut came off the rear differential which caused the rear wheels to lock up. this also wiped out the rear gears, carrier and driveshaft. my extended warranty plan would not cover the repairs because it was an external part on the rear differential that came loose causing the damage. the repairs cost me over $1,000.
I am the original owner of a 2005 dodge ram 1500, and have always kept my truck in excellent physical and mechanical condition, and there are no incomplete or unperformed recalls on this vehicle. there were no indications of any kind of mechanical issues with this truck until sunday, 6/22/14, approx. 6pm. i was driving at approx. 35-40 mph along a local street, approaching an intersection, when it sounded like a blowout, but the truck continued to drive into an intersection. this was followed by whining and banging sounds, which as it turns out, was a the drive shaft tearing up the underside of my truck. ,,i made it thru the intersection, and part-way into a parking lot driveway, when the 2 pieces of my driveshaft flew off and the entire back end locked up, with my truck blocking traffic. i am disabled, and was fortunately not injured, and no one was hit by the flying pieces of the drive shaft as they flew out. the truck was inspected by a geico adjuster, who indicated he was well trained with truck parts and mechanical, and that one of the pins had backed out of the 2005 dodge ram 1500 drive shaft into the rear differential, causing spider gears to lock up and the driveshaft to tear away from the rear axle. i have a copy of the geico report. the adjusters assessment was confirmed also by the repair center, who mentioned that they had seen this same issue before. this is an extremely hazardous mechanical failure; the vehicle appears to keep running, but the driver and passengers are in a vehicle that ultimately cannot be controlled, and the drive shaft comes into 2 pieces and flies out, potentially injuring by-standers and other property. ...updated 01/07/15 *bf *tr updated 08/23/2017*ct
I was driving at approximately 65 mph on i-95, and when crossing a small overpass, i heard a high pitched whine. i thought it sounded similar to the noise tires make when on a bridge grate, but it was louder and higher pitched. approximately 15 seconds after the first occurrence, there was another quick whine and all of a sudden the truck began to shake violently. there was a very loud and fast banging noise coming from under the truck. it felt like the truck was coming apart around us. i was in the fast lane, so i was able to pull over and hit the brakes immediately. i looked under the truck and saw that the drive shaft had become detached from the differential housing. i had it towed to a shop. the mechanic told me that the spline nut had completely backed off allowing the drive shaft to come free. he mentioned that there didn't appear to be any evidence of thread lock compound on the spline. fortunately, i was able to stop before the bearings jammed up the gears and froze the rear differential. i have had it in a total of three shops for assessment. the consensus is that the rear is damaged beyond repair and needs to be replaced. *tr
Wife was driving home from work on secondary road, heard a noise, then a thump. she was doing around 40-45 mph, was able to put over to side of road with no incident. i arrived to see what had broke, and i discovered the driveshaft had separated from the rear axel. nothing had broke, but rather the nut that connects the driveshaft to the rear axel had loosened and came off. causing damage to the rear end. *tr
While driving on the highway at 60 mph the back wheels suddenly and without warning locked up for an instant. i immediately braked to reduce speed and try to get to the side of the road. in order to avoid being hit in the rear by other vehicles, i needed to accelerate to 60 mph and the wheels locked again. i was able to get to the side of the road. i have called dodge about this issue. *js

On june 7 2014 we we're driving to a landscape business to purchase some landscape stones and about 100 feet before the entrance of the business my driveshaft fell off my truck causing my rear wheels to completely lock up and nearly causing a catastrophic head on collision after the northbound vehicle had to swerve to miss my truck and almost hit a southbound vehicle head on. i had the truck towed to a nearby auto facility where it was looked at and confirmed that my complete rear differential was completely destroyed causing my vehicle to a complete stop once the driveshaft fell off. it cost me nearly $2000 to get it repaired. i also contacted chrysler via email and explained to them what had happened and their response was that there was nothing they could do and i was out of warranty. the technician at the auto facility that repaired my truck told me that he remembered something about a recall for that on the dodge trucks. i then did some research and discovered that on the newer models there was a recall but not on mine but exactly what happened to the trucks on recall (rear end differential lockup) is what happened to mine. it could have very easily killed somebody if the southbound vehicle hadn't reacted so quickly. my truck only has 66000 miles on it which is an average of only about 6000 miles a year.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr ...updated 01/07/15 *bf updated 6/11/2015 *js
On june 7 2014 we we're driving to a landscape business to buy some landscape stones. about 100 feet before the entrance to the business i heard a noise coming from the rear of my truck and as i was turning into the entrance approach of the business my driveshaft fell off truck completely locking up my rear wheels and completely stopping my vehicle which almost caused a catastrophic head on collision.my truck was blocking part of the road and the northbound vehicle had to at the last minute swerve into the southbound lane to prevent from hitting my truck at approximately 45 mph and just missed hitting a southbound vehicle head on. somebody immediately stopped and threw my driveshaft into the bed of my truck and told me to engage the 4 wheel drive and hit the gas barely moving my truck because the rear wheels didn't turn. i then had to have the truck towed to a nearby auto facility. they called me the next day with a diagnosis of what happened and an estimate. they told me that rear end differential completely locked up preventing my rear tires from not turning at all. it ended up costing me almost $2000. the automotive technician told me to check and see if there are any recalls for this because he thought that he had read something about rear end differential lockups on dodge rams. so i did some research and did find that there were certain years that did have recalls but not for the 2005. i did at that time contact chrysler via email and explained what had happened and their response was that i was out of warranty. my truck has only 66000 miles on it which is an average of about 6500 miles a year which is extremely low for a almost 10 year old vehicle. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge slt ram two wheel drive truck. 73,000 miles. i was traveling on a highway merging with another when the rearend cut loose. there is recall but the manufacturer declines to repair it because it doesn't have the fix. they want me to pay to repair it and submit receipts. if i am paying to repair with same faulty parts my expenses could grow out of sight. i was very lucky an accident didn't occur. they say parts made before aug 3/2005 are affected. i don't understand why parts made after 8/3/05 cannot be used. also why should i pay anything. im a working guy without that kind of disposable income. i was also told i wouldn't be reimbursed until the fix was available. cannot get it in writing that i would be compensated in full. please advise. i font have the vin #. my truck is at dave dennis dodge dayton ohio. i have read of this problem was known about some time ago. *tr

2005 ram 1500 only has 57,000 miles on it, several issues: 1) loud whining noise, sounds like really loud power steering whine but power steering is ok. started last winter when we had extremely cold temperatures. now it is extremely loud all of the time. after hearing announcement of recall and reading other owner complaints of locking up while driving i am concerned of my safety. 2) i have had trouble with the right rear wheel feeling like it locks up when turning right especially when road is wet. 3) 4-wheel drive is impossible to use. after a short period of time it starts making a whining sound then locks up when trying to drive in reverse. feels like tension of a rubberband that has twisted as far as it will go. 4) also, having problem of truck stalling when putting it in reverse. always starts up again but can be dangerous if you are backing out onto a busy street. dealership has resealed drive pinion 3 times! don't know if all 4 are related but i sure would like to have a professional look it over. my local chrysler/dodge dealership's service department has really gone downhill. *js

While driving, the rear wheels locked up and the drive shaft hit the road. i was able to steer the truck out of harms way before a more severe accident could occur. upon leaving the vehicle, the draft shaft was seen laying underneath the truck, detached from the rear differential. the dealership found the pinion nut had backed off and yoke came out of rear differential. when that happened, the pinion went into the carrier and gouged it and broke the speed sensor. repairs were extensive and not supported by chrysler. had to replace the rear differential center carrier, ring and pinion, both axle bearings, rear speed sensor, and rear drive shaft and yoke. research concluded this is a common problem with other dodge trucks of varying years as well as 2005. however, chrysler will not recall 2005 dodge ram trucks. *tr
My request for a complete and thorough re-investigation by nhtsa will follow this complaint. myself and 2 children almost died as a result of the power train failure of my 2005 dodge ram 1500 4x4 hemi pickup. on sat morning 7-20-13 around 10:30 am traveling home from a baseball tournament, we were westbound on 80/90, mile marker 115, traveling around 70-72 mph near elkhart indiana. the rear pinion nut came loose, causing the pinion gear to fall into the rear differential, locking up the rear end, and throwing the drive shaft completely off my vehicle with no warning. we were in heavy traffic, there was a semi pulled over into the shoulder for a down tire, all the vehicles were merging over to give the semi room, when all of a sudden my vehicle made a loud noise (bang), and i lost immediate control of the vehicle. i fought to regain control of my truck, just missing being rear ended and broad- sided by several vehicles as well as wiping out vehicles to my right and behind me. i barely got some control as my vehicle was attempting to go sideways i was in fear we were going to roll at 50 mph right down the highway. i kept the vehicle from rolling somehow and came to a screeching stop barely off the roadway. my truck was smoking from everywhere and i could not see for what seemed like 2 minutes. as traffic lightened up and the 2 cars that also left the roadway to avoid a collision, got back under power and left, i found my drive shaft on the roadway completely off my vehicle. once my mechanic was able to see the vehicle on monday and diagnose the issue. it was found then that the rear pinion nut came loose. it has cost me over 4500.00 so far between towing, rear end, drive shaft, front end, gas tank smashed and were not done. the trans also has issues now. this is the 2nd dodge vehicle my mechanic has seen this happen to. please look at the recalls and complaints on here. ...updated 01/07/15 *bf *tr
