We have classified the 56 complaints from 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
After driving at highway speeds for a period of time, once i stop the vehicle and almost always happens after i proceed into a turn, without warning, the vehicle's engine cuts off. i have carried it to the dealer twice, they say they have never heard of this before and can find no problem, they tell me once this has been brought to the manufacturers attention more than three times, a service bulletin is issued. i know of one other owner of this same vehicle with the same problem and the internet has numerous complaints about the same problem with the make and model of this vehicle. *tr
2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 liter. last year i took it to the dealer after it stall several times they could not duplicate problem nor did it give them any error code. my truck currently has a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak will take to dealer. *tr
My husband bought our 2004 dodge ram 1500 (hemi) in jan 2004 and has about 130,000 miles now. we had problems with the breaks and rotors just like every one else on here in march of 2005 when driving down the highway with cruise on and the truck lost all power. the rpm went to zero but the truck was still running . to get the rpm to come back on we would have to turn off the truck and restart the truck. every time the electrical light would come on, all while in traffic at 65-70 mph. this went on from march 2005- jan 2007. we have been to the dealer many times and they couldn't get any codes to come up. then in january 07 we got off the highway to stop at a store and had to make a left turn into the store. the truck made a loud pop noise and died. when my husband started the truck back up it was sputtering and wouldn't stay running without keeping the truck above 2000 rpms. i took the truck to my dad who is a robertson tire repair tech. he couldn't get any codes to come up. then about 45 min after letting the truck sit he ran the codes again and got about fifteen codes. we replaced all the sensors and it didn't help so went to the dealer again. they couldn't get any codes and couldn't tell us what was wrong. why it wouldn't stay running. so i just thought i would file my complaint and let everyone know what happens after its done stalling what happens next. i will not buy another dodge. *nm
I own a 2004 dodge 1500 quad cab. at about 35,000 miles when i came to a stop my truck would just die. there would be no check engine lights or anything to make you think something was wrong. i took it and had a diagnostic ran on it there would never be any code. to this date my truck is still doing the same thing. i have searched the web and found that i am not alone. dodge knows that this problem exists. i have called to be told that they would have to have a diagnosis before they would fix the problem. that is impossible since no code will show up. please help. this is a very dangerous situation. *jb
Oil pressure gauge went to zero. never came back. dodge will not warranty the engine , dealer says the engine is shot, 56k and is still under warranty. dealership started at 8 grand to fix it. is now down to 4,500. it appears this could be a common problem but dodge won't warranty the repair. *jb
Engine died twice in 2 1/2 years total loss of steering a 240 lbs man can not turn the wheel after engine dies brakes work fine just no steering. *jb
Driving the vehicle and notice performance issues, strange sounds and stalling, oil pressure gauge fell out, and was concerned for my safety. pulled over and had to drive real slow with flashers to get home. inspectors have told me that the engine had a cooling failure that caused the oil to sludge. *nm
Tl*- the contact has a 2004 dodge ram 1500 that has stalled while traveling at various speeds. the contact has been able to restart the vehicle after the stalling incidents. the dealer stated that they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle since they couldn't duplicate the problem. the first time the contact experience the stalling the vehicle had an odometer reading of 15,000 miles.
Truck stalled when turning a corner. had to accelerate through the corner and after i released the accelerator the truck died without any indicator lights. i put it in neutral and started it and drove off. *jb
Truck started stalling a few weeks ago for my wife. i finally had the chance to drive it and it fell flat on its face. my entire family was almost put into a telephone pole at 45 mph since the truck lost all power. this time it didn't stall it just ran with no acceleration and held at 4,000 rpms. extensive attempts for cooperation by dealership and daimler chrysler have led me to believe i bought a really expensive coffin. i established the tsb codes w/ both and was left hansen high and dry. i got that " sure we'll help, here' s a new truck but we can't pay off yours even though we sold it to you." and the" we're not responsible for this even though we acknowledge the problem is our fault." i will not purchase a dodge vehicle again. shame on dodge!!!! i don't really blame the dealership, but they themselves should have checked all this with the truck before selling it to me. daimler chrysler representatives who decided this isn't a problem should be made should be punished by law to drive these faulty vehicles until they are injured or killed. maybe then these problems will be repaired. *nm
I just learned you were looking into an issue with 2004/05 dodge ram trucks where the engine stalls. i own a 2004 dodge ram 1500 quad cab with a 5.7 liter engine. in december of 2006, i was traveling up a hill (a fairly steep grade) at about 30 - 35 mph when the engine just stalled for no apparent reason just as i was about to come left around a bend. the engine restarted and has not stalled since. *nm
2004, dodge ram 1500, 5.7l. truck will sometimes stall while slowing for a stop or turn. had the tsb 18-013-05a done by the dealer and the problem still exists. this is a dangerous problem especially into turns because the vehicle loses its power steering. *jb
Vehicle engine stalls randomly. no warning, no warning lights. vehicle driving 10-15 mph, engine stops. will start up immediately when ignition turned off then on. *jb
Originally had a problem with the egr position sensor and the dealership re programmed this with new software this took place 02/07/06. seemed to take care of original stalling issue. *nm then on 12/2/06 i was exiting the freeway and my truck was shaking bad. i could tell that the engine was misfiring. if the engine went down to an idle it would stall, which it did several times, leaving all system components powerless (no steering or brakes etc). i had my pregnant wife in the truck with me at the time. putting her in danger this way left me less than thrilled. we took it to a dealership right away. they told us that cylinder #4 was not firing (no compression) and two other cylinders had limited compression. they ended up calling some dodge tech. line. since the dealership said that they couldn't find a tsb regarding this problem. turned out there is one in existence #02021 from 11/4/2002. the tech line said it sounds like one or more valve springs could be broken. the dealership in fact took the valve covers off and sure enough there is a broken valve spring. they told us several others seem weak. i have 71,500 miles on the truck and you guessed it surprise the warranty expired at 70,000. this is going to cost around $1200.00 out of pocket!!! i want dodge to back this problem. there are alot of discussion boards with innocent people that have the same problem. a broken valve spring is an obvious error on the engineers end of things...bad design.....faulty metal. this is not a wear and tear issue. i have heard that dodge is on their 3rd design on the valve springs for these trucks. obviously they are aware of the problem. if they have to keep re-manufacturing. but that puts the rest of us that have the original design in harms way. it is a very scary feeling to have you truck quit on you in the middle of rush hour traffic. thank god that nothing happened to me or my wife. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled without warning while idling and while traveling various speeds. the vehicle restarted soon after stalling. the vehicle had to be towed to a dealership who determined the problem could not be duplicated.
Before the occurrences, my 5.7l ram 1500 would sputter on idle and when first put into gear, and the check engine light would come on for about 25 miles and then go back off. when the code was checked for the light, the forward passenger-side oxygen sensor was showing voltage high. i replaced the sensor, cleared the codes and everything was fine for a while. the first event happened when i was making a left turn on a small road-when i turned, the truck died. i didn't notice that the truck had died until i felt the power steering go out, and then i realized i was stuck in the middle of the road. i then had to crank the engine 5 or 6 times before it started again, and, when it did, the check engine light was back on. the same problem happened 2 more times that day. when taken to the dealer, an engine diagnostic was run, and the same code was showing up. the mechanics put about 45 miles on it trying to duplicate the problem, but were unable to. the problem stopped for about 2 weeks, and then it started sputtering again. when taken again to the dealer, 4 cylinders were showing a mis-fire, and the same oxygen sensor was showing voltage high. the mechanic informed me that the cylinders were mis-firing due to bad spark plugs (which were not due for service yet). i have changed the spark plugs, and my truck has died twice since then. this has become more than frustrating because i bought the truck used with 39,000 miles (roughly) on it. the mechanic charged me for my last visit because different codes showed up, so it was a different problem-even though the truck was in the shop for the same conditions. if some actions aren't taken, i am ready to file for lemon laws. *jb
Traveling at 40 mph truck started to shake. it then stalled out on a slow-braking turn. had to limp home and then to garage using one foot on brake and one on gas to keep the rpms up. initial diagnosis was a stuck air valve that made the fuel mixture too rich. several cylinders were missing. it turned out that two valve springs were broken. apparently this is pretty common. a lot of valve springs are being sold in the area. the truck had 73k miles on it and of course the warranty ran out at 70k. defective valve springs costing a couple of bucks cost me over $1000 in repairs. i was lucky that the block wasn't damaged. for a while we thought we needed a new engine. *jb
Egr valve failure. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 40mph, the oil pumped failed. the engine light illuminated and the instrument cluster read the oil level was zero. the vehicle was pulled to the side of the road where it was towed to the dealership. the vehicle is currently undergoing additional testing.
I was driving my 2004 dodge ram 5.7 liter hemi pick-up truck home from work on 03-02-06 and was making a right hand turn i was probably going about 20 miles per hr. and the truck just stalled out i almost hit the car in the opposing lane because there was no power so the brakes were at a loss and so was the steering i'm glad i wasn't going any faster than that. *nm
I bought my truck used approximately dec 1, 2005 with 49,500 km on the odometer. it is a 2004 dodge quad cab 1500 with a 5.7l hemi engine. approximately 3 weeks ago the engine stopped. i was driving along a residential street at between 20 and 30 km/hr. my foot was barely on the accelerator and the engine stopped. there was no warning (i.e. no hesitation, stumbling or mis-fire). no dash lights came on. i pulled over, put it in park and the engine started up right away with no problems afterward. it was approximately ''10 or ''12c temperature outside and had gone to ''20c overnight. i had a full tank of gas and my throttle body had been serviced in the previous 2 weeks. the engine was reasonably warm, but i had only been driving for approximately 5 minutes at low speeds. odometer was about 56,000km. the truck was into chrysler service on feb 24 and i mentioned that the engine stopped to the service manager. i asked if he had heard of anyone else complaining of this problem. he said he had never heard of any complaints. today (feb 28, 2006), the engine stopped again. the temperature outside was approximately ''10c and had gone to about ''13 or ''15c overnight. same symptoms. i had driven for about 5 minutes, light accelerator, speed of about 20 to 30 km/hr and was in heavy traffic. i put it in neutral and the engine started right up without any problems. no dash lights came on. odometer is about 59,000 km. *nm
2004 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.7 hemi. engine stalls daily when stopping at red lights or stop signs. dealer has "flashed' the computer, but never helps. *jb
Hemi engine dies for no reason. 3 times within 1yr and half, truck restarts fine. happens after it is put in gear and driven for @150ft. took to dealer and the denied any problems. *jb
While stopped in a turn lane, the engine shut down for no apparent reason. this occurring three days after serviced by the dealer for the second time for the same problem. have since spoken to the dealer again and have been told that chrysler is looking into the problem. so far, this a problem that has only manifested itself in town at low speeds. i am very concerned that it may occur on the freeway, which will leave me with no power steering or power brakes.*jb
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 with a hemi it has a stalling and idle drop problem. i have almost hit other car due to the engine stalling loss of steering and brakes. i have taken my truck in had the upgrade done stalling was less now only twice but idle drops to 300 rpm and bounces around truck shakes like its going to stall then smoothes out and rpms go back to 1100 or so. dealer just keeps telling me they are working direct with chrysler corp on this and they will keep in touch. they have yet to call me i call them once a week to see what is going on and get the same story the are working on it...*jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 10 mph through the woods, the underbody skid plate collected massive amounts of road debris which caused a fire underneath the vehicle. this was determined after the contact observed large amounts of smoke and flames from underneath both sides of the underbody. the vehicle was driven to a nearby water hose where the fire was extinguished. there were no injuries were sustained. there was minor fire damage sustained to the remaining underbody and shield. after an extended period of time, the vehicle was driven to the dealer for further inspection who determined the original equipment skid plate on the vehicle was designed by another manufacturer for another type of vehicle. the manufacturer was alerted. a diagnostic test showed a fault with the evaporative emission system. updated 09/05/06. *jb
I have an 04 dodge ram 1500 hemi, while driving the truck at any given time truck just shuts down completely.i have taken it back to the dealer several times and nothing was done to solve the problem.now last week i was driving up the street the truck shut off one more time causing me to hit a guide rail.i feel the truck is very unsafe to drive and personally dont want it anymore.
I own a 2004 dodge ram with the 5.7 hemi engine. the engine in my truck has stalled on numerous occasions when slowing down and going into a turn. once on the freeway at 65 mph! this happens most when turning on city streets or pulling into a parking lot. the dealer has flashed the pcm 3 times and it still has the problem. the last time it was in for this problem the dealer screwed with the timing, fuel air mixture and idle all in poor attempt to keep it from stalling. the results are poorer fuel mileage, occasional black smoke from exhaust, stalls at idle, the engine stumbles and soot build-up in the exhaust pipes. oh, it stills stalls while turning sometimes. the dealer and the regional dodge rep are both dragging their feet. the truck is unsafe to drive. it has 20" tires and wheels(factory)which make it even harder to steer when the engine dies and you also lose the power brakes too. real waker upper. *jb
Stalling 2004 dodge hemi sport---stalls upon breaking or coasting at an intersection. brakes make high pitch ringing noise everytime but dealer says it has nothing to do with the other. been in 4 times for repair, co-pilot installed to try to retrieve alternative pictures of system since no codes were sent during shut down. dealer could not repeat stalling, nor could they retrieve any info with co-pilot. now chrysler has informed the dealer they are not to touch my vehicle any more for this issue since they can not repeat the stalling themselves. now i'm waiting to meet with the regional manager of chrysler to discuss buy back.
2004 dodge ram pick up, stalling problems. happens to me when i come to a stop. seems to be on very hot days for some reason, but not every time. dealer attempted fix with chrysler download program and failed. back again for second attempt, now we are in test mode.
Turning on off ramp about 30 mph. truck stopped running. shifted out of drive started motor again. *jb
My dodge ram with the 5.7 (hemi) engine stalls without warning. examples include stop lights, and driving conditions ranging from 20-65mph. dodge serviced the vehicle but the problem still remains. the most recent event was 5/18/05. i am awaiting word on the current condition of my truck from the dealership...rem
When making a turn engine stops for no reason causing me to lose steering. took one a vehicle to dealer who advised they could find nothing wrong. *tr
Check engine lite keeps coming on. have taken to dealer 4 different times. dealer says issue is with o2 sensors. second time in all sensors and computer replaced. still is occurring. dealer said they where bringing in field service tech on 3rd time. last issue occurred 30 march 05. dealer is unable to diagnois case of issue.*ak
Dt: the consumer stated that the vehicle stalled unexpectedly. this happened while sitting still and just recently while driving at a speed of 15 mph. there was no prior warning before stalling, and no dashboard lights came on to indicate a problem. no lights on the dashboard came on after stalling. the vehicle will immediately start right back up. this happened for six months at least. the idle was jumping. the consumer thought that the idling and stalling problems were related. the vehicle had idle problems since january 21, 2004. the vehicle had been to the dealership three times, and was on the way back to the dealership. the dealership could not find any problem with the truck because it was intermittent. the manufacturer was contacted, and referred the customer back to the dealership. also, the manufacturer told the consumer that this problem belonged to the dealer. *ak (11/08/05) *sc
I own a 2004 dodge ram 1500 powered by the hemi engine. i have talked with timberline dodge located in portland or about a problem i have been experiencing with the engine suddenly stalling for no reason. all that the dealership did was add me to a list of over 30 other can owners with the same problem. today i was nearly in an accient as the result of the engine quitting without notice. i was entering a busy parking list when i was suddenly confronted with a steering wheel that would not turn and brakes that were ineffective. i have researched further and there appears to be a substantial number of vehicle owners with the same problem.. i purchased the vehicle 2 months ago and have had several occurences since please help.*ak
At 6:45 am as i approached a red stop light the engine died. i noticed it because the breaking and steering became difficult. it restarted easily and i was able to get to work without any other problems.
While driving at 20 mph engine stalled and lost complete power. *ak the vehicle stalled while making left or right turns at low speed, and while coming to stop(s) both up or down hill at low speeds. dodge say they are aware of problem, but can not resolve at this time. *bf *nm
When braking/stoping the engine will stall, dealership has verified stalling problem. have been advised that dodge is aware of problem and an update to software is under development. dodge does not know the release date of software.
While driving the vehicle suddenly stalled. the cause of this was undetermined. *ak
2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi qc intermittlently stalls at idle. no check engine light, and throws no code. key must be turned all the way back, then forward to restart. this seems to happen only when engine is warmed up.*ak safety hazard!
I have an 2004 dodge ram with a 5.7l hemi engine. my truck is now around 50k miles. i have had engine stalling since day-one of owning the vehicle. i have taken it to two dodge dealers multiple times and it has yet to be fixed. the engine stalls mostly when coming to a stop. sometimes is just stalls after sitting at a light with my foot on the brake. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving under normal conditions and at any speed, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on 6 occasions for this problem. the first 3 times the vehicle was inspected, the problem could not be duplicated. on the fourth time the pcm, map sensor and the ngc controller were replaced. this corrected the problem for only a short period of time. the stalling returned and the vehicle was taken back for inspection two more times however, no repairs were made. there is also a problem with the transmission, it has been overhauled 2 times and the vehicle is still having engine hesitation problems. the vehicle was taken to the dealer 5 times due to the abs. when the brakes were applied the rear end of the vehicle pulsates. no repairs were made to the abs and the manufacturer was alerted.
Consumer was pulling out from a parking space and noticed that the rpms were going up, and the engine was making a funny noise. when he got to the road and approached the stop light the same thing happened. then, vehicle slowed down and shut down. consumer just picked the brand new vehicle up from the dealer the day before. he had the vehicle towed to the dealer, and was told that the filter in the transmission was coming apart. which meant that none of the fluid was going to the transmission. this blew out the engine.*ak the dealer replaced the transmission. *tc
My 2004 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with 5.7 hemi motor stalls when approahing a stop. does not happen every time, but fairly regular. it always comes as a suprise, rpms drop to @ 400, engine vibrates and stops. it always starts right up. it does it when hot or cold, but more when cold. many times the rpms just drop, engine vibrates a little and stays running. dealer had truck 3 times, first two they found no problem, even that i video taped the conditions while driving, 3rd time they admit there is a problem, but do not know how to fix it. today, it is in the dealership for the 4th time for the same thing. i explained it might have to do with the transmission not down shifting right on stopping, as shortly after i had a transmission sending unit replaced, right after purchase, it started acting this way
Dodge ram 1500 w/5.7 hemi stalls. this incident has occurred dozens of times, and appears to occur most frequently during no or light throttle conditions such as driving through intersections or down a long grade. stalls have also occurred when switching from drive to reverse (in parking lots) and during the first start-up of the day if the vehicle is shifted into reverse immediately after starting. ninety-five percent of the time, there is no warning (ie, stumbe) that the engine is experiencing a problem. we have attempted to have this problem diagnosed at many dealerships, none of whom were able to retrieve any codes. due to our persistence and concern, two local dealerships have since refused to work on our truck. thus far, dodge dealers have attempted to blame this problem on a poorly connected battery and have supposedly "adjusted the throttle body blade" to allow more air into the engine during light/no throttle conditions. i am quite familiar with electronic engine controls and find this repair rather disturbing. it is not yet known if this "repair" has affected vehicle emissions. in light of pe05-027, i will be forwarding relevant paperwork and correspondence to the attention of stephen speth.
Coolant overflow bottle defective design. cap leaks coolant. coolant level @ minimum still losing coolant. dealer states when vehicle goes over rough roads, coolant spashes and leaks out the cap. bottle replaced 3 times, continues to leak.*ak
Truck engine started smoking like it was on fire a big ball of smoke came out of exhaust people in the parking lot thought it was on fire as of this time we are waiting for the dealership to replace the engine and exhaust. *ak
When the driver moved across two lanes to initiate a left turn the truck lost all power. the consumer pushed down on the accelerator but noting happened until the driver pushed the pedal all the way to the floor. when the pedal was pushed all the way to the floor the truck lurched forward quickly at a very high rpm. the problem has never occurred again, even after the dealer examined the vehicle. the cruise control would not disengage until the vehicle's speed exceeded 8 mph over the set speed. *ak
When driving down a decline at any speed the vehicle stalled without warning. as a result the vehicle was left with no power. the consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealership on two separate occasions but the problem recurred. please provide any additional information. *nm
