Problems with 2005 Dodge Magnum ENGINE

On average, the 2005 Dodge Magnum starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 101 221 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2005 Dodge Magnum

After filling my gas tank without topping off, my car stalls within the first 300 feet of the gas station and is then hard to start. once it's restarted, for the next 40-60 miles of driving, my car hesitates and will often stall at any low speeds or stops unless i drop it into neutral and rev it up. 60-100 miles after a full tank, the car will buck when coming out of a turn and then stall if i let off the gas. *tr

Car stalls shortly after filling up. *tr

Car stalls multiple times after refueling, including in traffic situations. *tr

went out to start the car on 11/7/13 and could not get the shift out of park. called the dodge dealer and he knew exactly what was wrong. called a tow truck and the owner said that he also knew what was wrong and that his small towing service had towed hundreds of chrysler / dodge cars with the same exact problem. i checked on the internet and found hundreds of complaints similar to my problem - cannot get out of park. i also called chrysler customer service and was told that they knew of the problem, but that my particular vehicle was not covered - only certain vin's are covered. if there are 100's of cars just in my small location, there must be 1000's, if not tens of thousands affected vehicles nation wide. i will also mention that the manual override for the shifter did not work, so my car had to be dragged onto the tow truck. i feel that this is not only a costly problem for car owners, but a safety issue as well. what if you put the car in park while you were in the middle of traffic and then could not move? i could list other situations as well - all safety issues. i would ask that a total recall of all vehicles effected be issued. thanks. *tr

Just bought the car, filled up the fuel tank at gas station and went for a drive. at the first stop light i came to the car stalled while slowing down to stop coasted to a stop and restarted the engine after a few attempts, resumed driving and it was driving ok got onto the on-ramp to drive on the highway and it stalled again while merging into traffic same problem occurred several times until the fuel level went down after driving. *tr

The engine on the 2005 dodge magnum 3.5l has a problem that could result in a serious injury or worse. in this case and citing a tsb from dodge that there is an issue with the rocker arms, valves, and egr valve that allows this engine to make a lot of noise. i contacted dodge directly and they are unwilling to help out. i think someone from your dept should look into this problem it does not only affect the magnum but any dodge vehicle with this motor. *tr

i have a 2005 dodge magnum (45000) actual miles with the 3.5 high output engine. when the care is started it makes a high end valve cover rocker are noise. i took it to dodge to have them look at it, their response was yep typical 3.5 l motor. they said that is i purchase the parts they will install at discounted rate. the parts are $345.00 per side. so nearly $1500.00 to get this fixed that should be fixed under a recall status. doing internet research, talking to other owners about the same issue we are all in agreement. the consumer is getting the shaft on this one. what is happening is the bracket that mounts to the cylinder and is lined up into place via a steel dowel pin, the pin is shearing off forcing the rocker arm shaft to rotate. when this happens the oil galleys that are suppose to lubricate the top end of the engine is not getting the correct amount of oil. this causes the rockers to get out of alignment, causes excessive wear on the shaft holding the arms, and then just wipes out the top end. please help those of us that cannot seem to catch a break on this problem. imagine driving on the freeway at 75 mph and the engine lets go. it will cause problems for many that should not have been involved. dodge customer service is no help, they simply do not reply to emails. *tr

Without warning, the car shuts down. this first occurred at a red light. the car just shut off unexpectedly and i was able to turn the key and restart it without problems. the engine shuts off while at a stop, while driving at lower speeds, while driving at high speeds, in town driving, highway driving, when it's hot outside, when it's cool outside, when idling. there are no dashboard lights (engine, oil, etc). there are no sounds, no shuddering, no kicking. my only indication that the car has suddenly turned off is that the tach needle goes immediately to zero. i have been able to use the momentum of the vehicle to pull off the road at which time i turn the key to off, wait a moment, and turn it back on. it restarts without problems. if i try to restart too quickly, there seems to be a hesitation in starting. we have attempted to repair many parts on the vehicle but it has not cured the problem.*jb

After fueling up the vehicle to a full tank the car seems to want to stall when coming to a stop. this happened on three separate occasions within a span of 3 stop lights and when you go to restart the car it doesn't want to start right away leaving you vulnerable at a stop light just sitting there. *tr

Vehicle dodge magnum r/t 5.7l 2005 engine stalls unexpectedly when moving slow speed/low rpm, loses power steering and brakes. does happen occasionally may go months without an incident. vehicle start normally right after. extremely dangerous especially when making left turn over oncoming traffic lanes and crossing lanes. had two incidents yesterday as described. this issue need to be investigated and recalled for complete repair. called chrysler customer service who were unwilling to assist with an issue but admit warranty extension to the fuel tank's multifunction control valve fuel shutoff float in the 19-gallon tanks. i found nhtsa comment in its summary of the closed investigation. "the condition represents a low risk to motor vehicle safety and is adequately addressed by chrysler's extended warranty." i disagree with nhtsa comments whether this is "low risk to motor vehicle safety". try to be stalled on the lane when 20 ton dump truck is approaching 50-60 miles per hour.

Has cutoff at 10 - 25 - 40 -65 mph. does it while slowing. stopping or accelerating. past made no diff if after fill up or 1/4 tank. no 'skips' couple miles after fill up. dealership cannot find problem. 2005 magnum r/t now 53,000 miles bought new garage kept. seen many similar complaints- is there no assistance for a loyal dodge customer??????????????

I own a 2005 dodge magnum r/t with the 5.7l hemi. i was driving from utah to missouri for work. once i got to lincoln, nebraska it was raining and out of no where my check engine light started to flash and my engine started to make a very bad knocking noise. i ended up having to get my car towed to a local mechanic where he found that a valve seal dropped in cylinder 6. there was absolutely no warning for this to happen. no small ticking noise from the valve hitting the seal, no water in the oil, no oil in the water, no metal flakes in the oil. from the knowledge of myself, my dad (12 year diesel mechanic), the mechanic that i had my car towed to who (has an a+ bbb rating and has been in business for over 14 years), and from the research i have done online a valve seat doesn't just drop out of no where without warning. from what i have seen online a lot of people have had major engine failure like this with the 2004-05 dodge durango with the 5.7l hemi as well. i am not 100% sure my issue is related, but what i do know is that this engine is now on back order through chrysler and the dealer told me they couldn't order the engine from chrysler and would have to order a new engine through a 3rd party company. i am the 2nd owner of my car and the previous owner and my self have both kept up on regular maintenance very well (oil changed every 3,000 miles). this engine needs to be investigated and recalled if this has happened to enough people for the engine to be on back order! *tr

Fatal engine failure. exhaust valve dropped without any previous noise. ruined entire engine. *tr

After filling up at a gas station, i drove the car approximately 1/2 mile and the car stopped at a traffic light. this has happened to me probably a dozen times since march of this year. it does not happen after every fill up, probably every 4 times it happens. *tr

The car started normally after sitting in a parking lot for 30 minutes. when the car was placed in reverse, the car lurched backwards and began accelerating on it's own. i quickly applied the brakes and stopped the car and put it in neutral but the engine continued to race from idle to 3000rpm. i repeatedly tried to restart the car and the same issue arose. finally the car settled down and i was able to get it home. i took it to the dealer and was told the throttle body was bad and i replaced it. same issue reappeared and i was then told it needed to be initialized to the new throttle body. the day after having the work done at the dealer the car began to accelerate on it's own in traffic. i contacted the dealer and was told there was a common problem with the pcm's in this particular car. i cannot believe that chrysler has a car on the road that when the pcm fails, the car will accelerate on it's own. chrysler says there is nothing they can do as it is out of warranty. *tr

Moving at very slow speed, engine stalls. come to stop - put in park and then restart. restarts on first try, however, there is a notable 'sound' upon ignition - almost sounds like a 'pop' or 'release'. this has occurred approx ten times over the past few months. nothing is so consistent with each situation that can conclusively say what/if the cause is. luckily has not occurred yet on highway, etc. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that while driving approximately 3 mph, the engine stalled and restarted. the failure occurred numerous times. also, the similar failure occurred when approaching a complete stop and driving at various speeds. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and informed there was not a recall related to the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

After filling up the tank with regular 87 octane and traveling less than a mile the vehicle stalled. i would restart the vehicle and it would stall again several times until about 10-15 miles it would subside. i realized after several fill ups there must be a correlation so i took my 2005 v8 magnum into the dealership. the dealership stated that it would cost between 1,500 to 2 grand to evaluate and fix the problem which they thought had to do with the fuel tank. since i could not afford the repair cost the only remedy was to stop short of filling up the tank. no stalls occurred if i would fill up the tank 3/4. this went on for several years until one day i was distracted and filled the tank up 100%. it did not stall at low speeds but when i got on the highway stalled at 55 leaving me in an unsafe situation (not having control of the steering wheel). fortunately i was strong enough to manipulate the steering wheel to the side of the highway. i was fearful to begin again at high speeds so i placed my flashers on and traveled several miles at 35 mph with several stalls to follow. now it is may of 2014 and the dealership has no warranty or recall noticed on this vehicle. *tr

Engine failure due to design flaw allowing oil and coolant to leak into cylinder, blowing the engine. had a total engine rebuild, costing 4000.00. happened 5 months later, needed valve springs and head done again, another 1000.00. engine light never goes out, no inspection sticker, number 1 cylinder has eaten 2 catalytic converters, and always putting oil in. no long distances, just local driving. *tr

Car has 137,000 miles car was running good , all maintenance done, parked car , shut it off , in about 10 seconds started back up again , and it sounded like someone was banging on the inside of my hood , started back firing then it went dead would never start again , manfredi dodge in staten island told me i dropped a valve seat , after 5 yrs i hear more and more about the same thing , and dodge doesn't want to do anything ,because the cars are out of warrantee , it usually happens after 100,000 miles , so yes car is out of warrantee , but buying the car brand new and spending almost $36,000 i should have gotten more then 137,000 miles out of that car

If i fill my tank and i drive it away from the pump, it will stutter, hesitate, jerk, then die. i lose all power steering, brakes, engine. afterwards, it won't immediately restart. it will start again after a few minutes. it won't start driving good again until i run the gas level down a little. after i fill, it will run ok until i make a turn or come to a stop, something that will slosh the fuel in the tank again then it will act like it is starved for fuel. this happens everytime i fill my tank. if i don't fill it completely then it will do it. it never did this when i first bought my car. one time after i this happened, i opened the gas cap and it was hissing and spitting gas just sitting there. this is a very dangerous situation as if this happened on the highway i could become involved in a collision. it has happened at least a half dozen time and have since not filled my tank up until today and it happened again. *tr

After filling up with gas the vehicle sputters and/or stalls. this can happen multiple times after one fillup. the vehicle is disabled in traffic and can be difficult to restart. this has happened at least a dozen times now and i am afraid someone could be injured of killed. i rufuse to let my wife drive the vehicle with my kids in the car. *tr

Every time you fill car with gas it stalls you have to burn off gas before you can drive. *tr

Bought a used 2005 dodge magnum 5.7l rt in 2011. i've had multiple stalling issues with the vehicle. likes to stall right after filling up the gas tank. also stalls with gas tank at nearly empty. can sometimes stall when making right/left turns or u-turns at intersections. i've learned to only fill up to half a tank, but issues still occur. the vehicle always stalls when going up a ramp in a multiple story parking garage. when going up the ramp, just as the car begins to get level with the floor at the top of the ramp, the vehicle stalls just about every time. seems like a gas tank fuel problem. i understand that a safety feature built into the vehicle turns the engine off in the event of fuel detection in an area of the gas tank where no gas should be. most likely in case of an accident leading to roll over of the vehicle. this appears to be malfunctioning. possible flaw in the design. chrysler/dodge needs to address this immediately before someone gets killed because their vehicle stalled while making a simple u-turn or while driving high speeds on a highway. public safety should supersede any cost concerns the company may have to pay to fix this problem. *tr

My dodge magnum r/t, 2005, periodically stalls for the first several miles after a fill-up. this was sporatic at first, but now happens with nearly every fill-up. normally it will be a momentary event while under power, but if i am stopped and idling the engine will die. it will typically restart right away. *tr

Car stalled (loss of power) after having refueled (to full). occurred multiple times until we determined that fueling to 3/4 full resulted in no stalling. stalling occurred within 1/4 mile of driving away from fueling location - often in traffic! *tr

The engine stalls after filling up the fuel tank. this has been going on for many years. it will stall 2 or 3 times even at highway speed. most of the time it will do it in traffic just after getting fuel. this took us a while to figure out. we used to fill up all the way and now we try to stop filling before it is full to just avoid the problem. *tr

We have had this stalling issue for years. we are the only owner of our 2005 dodge magnum with a hemi. we know this car. i filled up at gas station a couple months ago & right after fill up pulled into the freeway and the car died..took a few tries to restart then restarted, and this occurs every time you fill the gas tank. i have reported this before and talked with dodge but our vin number is not covered. why is dodge not making good on the investigation done by the nhtsa. we have the same exact problem and require the same exact fix and they still refuse to cover the faulty tank design. it will cost over 2k to get this fixed. why are some cars covered and other cars are not covered? why do we have to wait years for this to get resolved? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the engine stalled with the illumination of the light bulb warning icon. the failure recurred forty times over several years. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who reprogrammed the computer system however, the failure recurred and would mostly recur after the contact refueled the vehicle. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
