Problems with 2010 Dodge Journey SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Dodge Journey starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 46 673 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2010 Dodge Journey

The rear brakes started squeaking, i had the chrysler dealer inspect and was told there was no recall on the brakes. i called chrysler customer service to submit a complaint and was told that my warranty expired by years. i called them because i read that they were extending the warranty. i had to replace the brake pads and rotors at 32,000 miles. i researched and found that the problem is the brakes and rotor is too thin for the weight of the car and that chrysler dodge knew about in their 2009 journey and didn't fix it in the 2010. the "short" extension of the warranty is not sufficient, there needs to be a recall. i bought this car because of the claim of drivability and low gas mileage so driving fast in this car doesn't happen. i drive careful and do not drive fast or brake hard so the rear brakes should not have worn out. *tr

After having the brakes & rotors replaced in june of 2012 at 47k miles, i started hearing a little screech from my brakes. i took it to my mechanic and paid for an inspection. he found the brake hose had failed because it was not suitable for this big of a vehicle. in return that caused the caliper to compress against the rotor causing abnormally fast wear & tear on the brake pads. my brakes, rotors, calipers & brake hose need to be repaired after 13k miles. i am having to replace the whole brake system every year. *tr

We have had the brakes done two times now. *tr

I replaced in the last 12 months pads twice, i replace a rotor and wheel bearing, this cost me over $450.00, did not know that warrant had been extended for my car. after doing all this after a few months still had the same problem took it into dealer and was told they would do the same thing and i needed to pay a $100.00 deductible, hopeful my car will be done today. *tr

The braking system makes a loud crunching noise and gets mushy when you're on a slippery surface making it hard to stop.

The problem i encountered was that the steering wheel shakes violently if brakes are pressed at 60 mph. the mechanics at carmax, machined the rotors and replaced the brake pads which seemed to fix the problem. roughly 3.5 to 4 months later, i had the same problem. this time, the mechanics at carmax replaced the rotors and the front brakes. the vehicle was once again placed into service last wednesday on december 18, 2013. once again, the rotors were machined and the brakes replaced. i purchased the vehicle o january 17, 2013 with the starting mileage of 34,904. i have put roughly 10,000 miles on the vehicle. when i took the vehicle in for the third time, i decided to look on the internet hoping that might help. however, i found hundreds of people with the same vehicle that were having the same problem as i was. i contacted dodge but they say that this is a maintenance issue. i believe that this is a safety issue. i have 4 children and god forbid that the brake system suddenly decided that it doesn't want to work! apparently, there is a flaw in either parts or design that needs to be acknowledged and corrected by dodge. *tr

Since we purchased our dodge journey it's been nothing but problems we own a 2010 journey. we've had to replace brakes and rotors, steering makes a very loud noise when turning almost sounds like electricity and my vehicle is not the only one i witness the same problem with another persons car same dodge journey we always get our car the necessary oil changes and my engine makes a very funny noise even our mechanic was worried he told us that our car is still new that my engine has to be leaking because everytime we get our routine oil changes it seems like the car is low on oil. also when i start driving away it loses speed and make a very ugly sound. this is by far the worst investment ever do not throw your money away on anything dodge or chrysler garbage expensive garbage then when you call them up they say they can't do anything about it. i think the government should be more strict on these kind of things this is our money here we pay taxes on these car more should be done to protect the consumer. *tr

Squeaking noise while driving. was told by dealership it is the rear brakes. they are at 10% and the rotors are too thin to be machined. called chrysler because they are only under warranty for 12,000 miles and they will not help out. i have never had a vehicle need rear brakes before 80,000 miles and then not being able to machine the rotors because they are too thin...i only have 35000 miles. i have also had to have the front brakes replaced at 21000 miles because the rotors are warped ( chrysler covered the repair because it is a problem with many journeys and the extended the warranty to 36000 miles. my brakes are again pulsating but i have to replace the rears before they will check the fronts). *tr

I have a 2010 dodge journey that has brakes and rotors changed twice in 24,000 miles due to warping causing shaking to the steering wheel when the brakes are applied. dodge recognized the problems and has extended the warranty to 36,000 miles but has not found and/or offered a root cause and permanent repair to the problem. what happens after 36,000 miles? someone needs to put pressure on chrysler to fix this design flaw that will ultimately cause accidents from this issue. an internet search "dodge journey brake problem" will show you the magnitude of this problem with dodge journeys. *tr

Premature wearing of brake pads and rotors. *tr

The check engine keeps on coming on and staying on. i have noticed problems with the car losing power while i am driving or accelerating; this has happened several time. i recently had to replace the brakes and rotors; it drives horribly every time i tried to stop the car would tremble. i expected the car to not have these problems as it is fairly new and i do not consider it to have alot of mileage. i am really concerned about these problems as i drive my car with three small children. i don't have the money to keep taking it for a diagnostic each time the light comes on; if the company is aware of this problem; they shouldn't charge people so much to check the codes or they should have a recall to fix the ongoing problems. *tr

Purchased used dodge 2010 journey from dealership in may 2012, returned vehicle about 2weeks later to have service department check for ticking noise on drivers side when driving. service department checked vehicle and said they didn't hear anything and it just may be wind noise when i drive at a certain speed. one month later, i needed brakes-front rotors that were bad. i had my mechanic to replace and he did apologize that i had purchased a lemon and had to spend out money for brakes already. needed 2 rear tires by july 2012, they had never been rotated but i accepted for not doing enough homework on purchase. now at 50,000 miles, car just cuts off, wont start until hours later, and diagnostic test does not show any codes or problems. *tr

Rotors on these vehicles are failing, causing steering wheel to shake and vehicle to leave lane of travel. dealer replaced rotors and brake pads. in august 2013 vehicle started doing the same thing. vehicle was brought back to dealer and rotors were failing again. the rotors on this vehicle are designed to small for the weight of the vehicle and is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt. *tr

My brakes started to grind two weeks ago. i had to have both the pads and rotors replaced. dodge in medina, ohio stated that they are not sure why i had premature wear and would not cover the cost of repair. i stated that i am aware of the problems of the journeys breaks, however it got me no where. i had to pay to replace them totally out of pocket costing $364.93. *tr

Problem description: purchased new 2/26/11 - on 5/25/12 the vehicle had 11764 actual miles. heard squealing noise when applying brakes - took to dealership and rear rotors warped and rear pads noisy. dealership replaced rear rotors and pads. picked up vehicle afternoon of 5/25/12. drove vehicle home and have only driven vehicle yesterday 5/29/12 and today 5/30/12 to work and, again, the squealing has occurred on my way home (5/30/12). called the service manager immediately and reported. am taking into dealership first thing in morning again (5/31/12). [*also please note that on 01/13/12 i had a fluid leak under left front of vehicle and the vehicle was inspected by the dealership where purchased and the dealership had to replace a left axleshaft seal which they stated was a defect.] *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph, she noticed a loud squeaking noise while applying the brakes. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated that the vehicle was operating as designed. the front and rear rotors, and the brake pads were replaced but the failure continued. additionally, the contact stated that water was leaking from the overhead vent and onto the rear seats. the front driver's side door also could not be locked with the key fob, only manually. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 22,240. *js

Nthsa, good morning, i have been experiencing concerns regarding the braking system on my 2010 dodge journey. when driving at speeds over 55 mph on the highway and having to apply the brakes the steering wheel begin to shake back and forth and this is somewhat alarming to both me and my wife. i have had many vehicles in the past and i have not ever experienced this before. is there a recall on the braking system or should we be alarmed and more importantly what should be done? contact dodge and file a complaint or ask them if their is a recall on the braking system? please assist? sincerely, mr. frederick rott msgt retired usmc

Continuous brake failure due to premature brake wear and rotor wear. caused failure with brakes resulting in going through intersection narrowly missing another car. brakes failed and repaired at my cost 3/25/12 at 48452 miles brakes failed and repaired at my cost 7/16/13 at 67356 miles brakes failed and repaired at my cost 10/17/14 at 82951 miles key ignition replaced due to recall in 2012 and the vehicle still loses power with gauges and lights. *tr

It was a saturday morning (about 9am) and i am driving about 70 miles to my destination, the brakes felt like they were applied for about 1-2 seconds then released without my foot anywhere near the brakes, the steering wheel pulls me but i am able to take control of the vehicle. i continue for about another 5 more miles, and it happens again, this time more violently. i was doing the same speed as before, about 70 mph and vehicle was travelling in the second left lane and the lanes were veering to the left. the brakes applied at a much stronger rate and again, i almost lost control of the vehicle, feeling as though the vehicle was pulling me to the left as if to intend to spin out of control. luckily, i was able to re-gain control of the vehilce. i called normandin again, they towed my vehicle to the dealership and after 3 weeks of having it and "driving the vehicle hard", they were not able to replicate the incident that occured to me, therefore, unable to pinpoint the cause. they advised me that the back rotors need to be replaced as they are shaking but that the extended warranty only covers the front. i would have to pay out of pocket for the rearafter 3 weeks, i have my husband drive the car home from the dealer (the warranty only covers tow's to the dealership, not from the dealership). the car sat in the parking garage since that day and it is now june, 2012 and i refuse to drive it any more. *js

We received notice that there was a voluntary brake recall from dodge jan or feb 2012. at the time my wife was experiencing jerking and pulling to the steering wheel when braking. we took the vehicle to the dealership and we were advised that the front pads and rotors would have to be replaced and dodge would cover the cost. this was around feb/mar 2012 with approximately 17k on the vehicle. on 4 aug we took the vehicle back to dodge due to the same braking problems and a check engine light. we were advised that the check engine light was caused by a crack piston head and dodge stated that the piston would be replaced under warranty. however, we were then advised that the jerking and pulling in the steering was caused by the rear brakes and we would have to paid $534.00 to have the rear rotors and pads replaced. this didn't sound right to me so i checked for any tsb/recalls, the cas website, and nhtsa website i found out that the brake problems (both front and rear) have been a serious issue with dodge and repairs and costs have been all over the board with dodge excepting no real fix except charging car owners on repeated repairs that only fix the problem for 3-9k. if this is the case nhtsa should mandate dodge to properly fix this problem with correct parts or fully recall all of these vehicles. dodge is putting my wife and son in danger everytime they set foot in the vehicle, and that is something the agency for highway safety should not allow to continue. we consumers need a real fix and not a bandaide on a defective product and your agency should not allow dodge to continue to ignore this problem. nhtsa should not have to wait for someone to lose their life before taking action against dodge. we are not beans to count, we are people! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the steering wheel began to vibrate continuously. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the front and rear rotors and brakes were replaced. the failure recurred eleven months after the repair was performed. the vehicle was not recently repaired for the recurring failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

I have had my front brakes replace and back brakes and rotors replaced twice an only have 37,300 miles on my car i am scared that my brakes would fails transporting my 3 kids how the brakes and rotors wear this quick. *tr

When braking at speeds above 50 mph, there is a violent shake in the vehicle. vehicle is only 5 years old, and now needs a third set of brake pads and rotors. this is a clear and well known problem with the 2009 and 2010 journeys, yet the dealer (and chrysler) refuses to acknowledge or fix it. when called chrysler, i was told "they stand behind their dealership & the dealership says it's "normal wear and tear", so they will not authorize the repair". so basically, even though you are a loyal customer (one who has never bought anything by mopar), they don't care. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. the contact stated that the brakes and rotors wore prematurely. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the brakes and rotors needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 33,000. the vin was unavailable.

I had major pulsating / vibrating when braking on my 2010 dodge journey after only 16k. i discovered this is a common problem, there are many complaints and even a few class action lawsuits alleging the brake were under engineered / under sized for this car, at least on the 2009 & 2010 models. i was pleased to learn that chrysler extended the warranty (acknowledging the problem) on the brakes for these vehicles, but was not pleased to find out that 1) they want you to pay a $50 or $100 "deductible" to fix the problem (that they acknowledged by extending the warranty) 2) the warranty is only extended to 36k miles and 3) that the warranty only applies to the front brakes and my rear brakes were also warped, which i argue is the result of the front brakes being undersized in the first place...how else do you explain warped front and rear rotors on a vehicle only 1 yr old and only 16k miles? i paid the $50 deductible for the front brakes, plus $199 + tax (rear brakes) to get back on the road, and promptly called chrysler customer service to pitch a fit and let them know what i though about having to pay one cent out of my pocket for a problem that is well documented and they acknowledged (by extending the warranty). i eventually received a full reimbursement from chrysler for the full amount i paid, including their $50 "deductible". i was very happy with this resolution, but still disappointed that i had to even pay out of pocket and initiate the complaint in the first place to get reimbursed, when they are fully aware of the issue. fast forward less than 1 year later and about 14k miles later exact same problem. unacceptable. i now have to go through this again, and i am not happy. chrysler should issue a recall and replace the brakes on these vehicles! this is a safety issue. enough with the half @$$ attempt of "extending warranties" and "deductibles". *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. while driving approximately 65 mph, the brake pedal pulsated upon engaging with a loud noise. in addition, the steering wheel began to shimmy. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer three times where the front brakes and rear brakes were replaced however, the failure recurred. the vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 6,000.

I have had to replace front and rear brakes on this vehicle at a huge expense and the poor stopping ability caused premature wear of my tires which also had to be replaced at a large expense. also, on multiple occasions my vehicle will not crank when the key is turned. the lights, radio, and windows continue to work, ruling out the battery as the cause. you can hear a "click" when the key is turned but the car remains dead. i have been stranded in dangerous situations when this has happened. each time the vehicle has been taken to service, no remedy is made as i am told that the problem can not be duplicated. the vehicle is currently in for repair with the same issue. i have asked to have the electrical system checked because i have had issues with multiple bulbs blowing out, (all at the same time), one window not raising or lowering from the passenger button only and a multitude of other quirky, electrical items. i feel that this vehicle is unsafe . *tr

Vehicle has been in the shop 4 times for uneven braking and premature brake wear. braking becomes difficult and unsafe after 10-12k miles. we are on our 3rd set of brakes and rotors in 35k miles. vehicle shutters and braking distances become significantly higher than normal after a short time. *jb

May 10, 2011 with 25917 km on the vehicle and at that time windsor chrysler replaced my front rotors and brake pads on both sides of the vehicle. on march 15, 2012 i started experiencing braking problems again with 45029 km on the vehicle and once again windsor chrysler replaced my front rotors and brake pads on both sides of the vehicle. on both occasions the vehicle would shake violently left to right when i was braking at speed of 100 km when as this occurred suddenly without any other warning that the braking system failed and needs repair. There are times when the ignition would just click, when attempting to start the car. i have to remove the key multiple times and try to start it, till it starts. i would be driving and all the electrical components in the vehicle would just go dead. (all electronics in dash board, air conditioning, radio). i would have to pull over, turn the ignition off and restart the car. i am still experiencing this problem. i replaced the key, thinking it was the problem and i continue to have this problem. i have had to replace the tires on this car/truck 4 times at an average of 30 thousand miles. i had the rotation and balances as recommended. the tires wore uneven to the point where the wires were exposed on the inside of the wheels. based on the dealers i have not needed a front end alignment. i have also had the brakes replaced on this vehicle three times in the front and twice in the rear. the vehicle has 115, 000 miles and i have never had to replace part on a car like i have had to do with this one. *tr

Had recall done once before on the brakes and had rotors turned. then approx 25,000 miles after had to do it again there was no brake pads left it was metal on metal. there is bad vibration in the steering when braking. the calipers are sticking this has happened on the front and back brakes the last time i had it done it was at ntb it cost right at $400.00 to repair and there is still a problem with braking and the vibration. it will last about a month once everything is done then its back to same old stuff. i cant keep going back for the same problem it is costing me to much money to get fixed. the last recall never fixed the problem. then dodge want to charge you all the fees cause it is out of warranty. *tr

I do not for the life of me understand why there has not been a recall issued for the 2010 dodge journey for the brake, tire, and rotor issue! i have had to replace the tires which were an arm and a leg because they are not a common tire/size , they wanted me to switch to a different tire size which then would affect the speedometer.. no way.. i have had to put 3 sets of rotors on the car and 2 sets of brakes, and going on 2nd set of tires.. you can't tell me there isn't an issue.. if i could get rid of the lemon i would but financially i am not in a position to. i have a friend with an identical car/color and we have the same story.. ridiculous! please help the owners of this lemon! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. while pulling out of the driveway, the contact heard a squeaking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the brake pad was replaced. in addition, the brake booster hydraulic system failed and needed to be replaced. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 7,883.

Rotors are warped causing a shaking, wobbling steering wheel when applying brakes. so far, 3 sets of rotors have been put on this vehicle (1 from factory and 2 follow on sets by dealer due to continual failure of rotors...) there are only 21000 miles on this journey and it will soon need a 4th set of rotors. the persistence of rotor failure makes it hard to steer the car safely as the steering wheel shimmies violently when applying the brakes. the rotor failures are also causing unsafe, premature and uneven wear on the tires. in all, the 2010 journey is unsafe to drive because of the consistent rotor failures. i do not know what do do.

Had just purchased the car. while driving car a week later, i hit the brakes to slow down for a traffic light. steering wheel started shaking. had to let off the brakes to keep control of car. reapplied brakes and got stopped. pulled over to check wheels. everything was good. took to mechanic and said i needed rotors and pad. had them replaced. within 7000 miles, same problem. has constantly been a problem. having to get new pads and rotor about every 7000-10000 miles. this is not right. something needs to be done and heaven forbid you are close to warranty. i think dodge trains their technicians to cover up problems to make it to warranty so they don't have to pay for it. *tr

Does not start all the time they replaced starter shows low tires , on ice . tailgate open door open 3 sets of tires and brakes under 100,00 miles they can never find anything wrong they parts at it i'm paying the $100. every time . dodge keeps saying they will help , talk is cheap !! you think they would try to find out whats wrong instead of throwing parts at it !have the journey at lease 50 times it never has been fixed . i have the lemon of lemons , at the point never to buy a dodge , jeep or chysler ever again !!!!

I am very concern about the braking system on this vehicle. i had the rotors and brake pads replaced within the first year. in the second year pads and rotors turned, three months later one of the pads need replaced. i have filed two complaints with dodge and am waiting back from their case manager. i am about to take a trip from georgia to iowa and luckily the place i do oil changes, always will do a courtesy check of the entire vehicle including brakes. it is in with the dealer now, but it sounds like they want to band aid fix it again. i am leary when driving and seeing other dodge journeys on the road now as if they are a safety hazard to everyone on the road. the last time the brakes had heated up so bad near chattanooga that it warped the rotors and the entire car shook so bad coming off the mountain. scared me to death, along with my passengers. *tr

Received recall for brakes. i was charged $50 but brakes were replaces for free, so i was told. the rotors were reworked at that time also. continued problems to this day. brakes in front have been replaced 3 times and back brakes twice. each time i took car back with complaints i was told i needed an alignment. took auto to an out of state dealership and was told that the rotor was warped. i have heard rumors to the effect that there is a defect in the front suspension. the load is too heavy for base. did chrysler know this and still trying to sell a defective product? i would like to be compensated.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. the contact stated that there were multiple failures with the vehicle. while traveling 3 mph in reverse, a grinding noise emitted from the brakes. the second failure occurred as the contact was traveling 25-30 mph and the brakes were depressed but the vehicle started to shake violently. on a separate occasion as the contact was traveling 25 mph, the anti-lock braking warning light illuminated and the vehicle again began to shake violently. the fourth failure occurred as the contact was traveling 25 mph and a burning smell emitted from the rear of the vehicle as the steering wheel began to shake abnormally. the most recent failure occurred when the contact was traveling 55 mph and the steering wheel began to shake after the brakes were depressed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer eight times. the dealer confirmed that the front brakes and both rotors needed to be replaced. the dealer also confirmed that the anti-lock braking sensor, as well as the passenger side hub and bearings needed to be replaced. in addition, the rear brakes and rear calipers would need replacing. the manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 1,389 and the current mileage was 39,550.

The transmission will shift from park into drive with a loud clang and jerk. this occurs when you pull up and stop, turn motor off, restart and put into drive. then at other times hesitates to shift. brakes will push themselves down with no pressure given by driver. front end on uneven patches of roadway will thump as thought it is loose and wobble. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge journey. the contact stated that while the brake was engaged, the steering wheel began to shake and jerk abnormally. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic several times for the failure. the brake pads and rotors were replaced several times however, the failure was not corrected and the steering wheel continued to shake when the brake was engaged. the failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 60,000.

vehicle has had 3 recalls replaced through time. the brakes have been an ongoing issue. i have brought in for steering wheel shaking, to wheels sounding like metal grinding to now a screeching high pitched noise. the front brakes were replaced and i was told all was well. again louder screeching and the noise isn't a consistent noise all the time so its hard for me to show the problem let alone pin point what's going on. a week after i bought the car the entire electrical inside the car turned off while i was crossing a bridge. it scared me half to death. and even now with my little girl and i in the car i am scared at times to drive not knowing what to expect or what else could go wrong. *tr

Brake squealing and serious massive vibration. *tr
