Problems with 2009 Dodge Journey SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

On average, the 2009 Dodge Journey starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC and its various aspects after 24 781 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2009 Dodge Journey

Purchased a 2009 dodge journey sxt in 02/09; took car in to dealership 11/30/10 for routine oil change/maintenance and was told the front brakes were shot even though the car has less than 21,000 miles on it and vehicle has had stringent maintenance. was told by the service dept that journeys "are just hard on brakes". then contacted several local brake shops and was told this was way too early for brakes to be failing. no warning light on dash; only indication brakes were bad was a little grabbing or mushy feeling upon braking, occasional slight squealing noises but this was infrequent. upon checking the internet i found hundreds of complaints from other dodge journey owners of premature wear on brakes. contacted dodge corporate office; spoke with service rep and explained the problem. she agreed front brakes should not be wearing out this early; she contacted the local dealership where i bought the car (which i had already done). she called me back and said they had worked out that i needed to take the car in and replace the front brake parts and upgrade to heavier duty parts. kicker is that i was supposed to pay for everything; i pointed out that the factory parts originally issued on the car were obviously not heavy duty for a 3800 pound car and that the brakes were a design defect. she stated that it was considered to be normal wear and that dodge would not replace parts; dealership stated the same. asked if it would take someone dying in a crash from brake failure to get dodge to recall vehicles and no answer was given. took car in to local brake shop and mechanic said front brakes were totally gone and were cutting into the rotor. this is a hazard issue. i take the car in every 3000 miles for maintenance and had never previously been told brakes were going bad---- which they shouldn't be at barely 20,000 miles! these cars should be recalled due to defective parts and have the company to replace brakes. *tr

I have had the dodge journey for less than 2 years and it only had 28000 miles took it in for a noise coming from front of car. the dealer told me it needed front brakes and rotors and it was not covered by warranty. i took it to a local mechanic and he did the front brakes and rotors and said the back brakes and rotors needed to be replaced also and that he has never seen the back brakes with only 28000 miles that needed to be replaced. $700.00 on a car that isn't even 2 years old and still under warranty????? not very happy with the car or chrysler the company. they need to put out a better product.

Pre-mature rear brake failure. *tr

My front brakes went out at 16,000 miles 6 months ago. i had to replace the brake pads and rotors. now at 23,000 miles my rear breaks have gone out (no prior warning, just all of a sudden constant squealing when i drive) and i've been told i again have to pay for new brakes and rotors. all of the expenses have been out of my own pocket, but i just was told yesterday to send my receipt for the front brake job to chrysler for a refund but that the rear brakes are not covered. i sent the receipt in but have yet to be reimbursed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey.the contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, he heard a grinding noise while attempting to slow down. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where both the rear and front suspension were replaced. the failure mileage was approximately 31,000. updated 01/26/11*lj the front brakes and rotors were replaced. updated 04/20/11

Dodge journey serious brake problem, 2nd time in less than 32,000 pads and rotors are needing to be replaced. dodge has acknowledged a problem and then did sent out reimbursement option, my first repair was paid for. however, the problem has not been solved with the vehicle, the same repair is required again. a search on the internet indicates this is a rampant problem, a recall from dodge has not been put in place, class action law suits exist. mechanic at midas indicates many dodge journeys at his facility with the same problem. *tr

Our dodge journey began having braking issues. a trip to the dealer revealed that at only 30,000 miles, the front brakes were basically non-functional. we needed to replace pads and rotors, which were far beyond machining, on the front and pads on the rear as well as having the rear rotors turned. this is unacceptable for a vehicle driven under normal circumstances with only 30, 000 miles. *tr

Front brake pad failure @ 19,000 miles. had to be replaced. vehicle now has 26,000 miles and back brakes now have to be replaced. front brakes are @ 95%. this shows that the original brake pads were defective or cheap. *tr

Purchased our 2009 journey in the summer of '09. i live in the country and drive approximately 25 miles to and from work, with only 4 stop lights between. at 27k miles we had to hve the front brakes and rotors replaced. suddenly one day without any sort of warning it sounded like my front end had fallen off when i came to a stop. the noise was so bad that i pulled to the side and put my hazards on honestly thought it was an enginge issue because the noise and shake was so horrible. husband came and drove it to the dealership. found out that we were metal on metal the front brakes and rotors needed to be replaced rear were just fine. dealership tried to tell us this is normal and that it was in the milage range to need this work done. told them they were crazy'this was the 9th dodge vehicle we had owned and never had we had an issue like this. they ended up comping the rotors for us but we needed to pay for brakes. dodge came along in june of 2011 and reimbursed us for the brake repair. now 15k miles later i suddenly had the same horrible noise but in the rear of the vehicle. took it to the dealearship and what do you know the rear brakes and rotors need to be replaced. called chrysler this morning, waiting to see what comes of it. *tt

I have had to replace the brakes on my 2009 dodge journey 3 times since march of 2009, my car only has 35,000 miles on it. i feel that the brakes are defective and are not safe. they do not provide a safe driving enviroment. *tr

I have a 2009 dodge journey. the brakes started to make a grumbling noise when i stepped on the brake. i had only 14,000 miles on the car. i took it to the dealer and they said it was the brakes and wanted me to pay for the repair. i took it to my mechanic because i didn't want the same dodge brakes onit. we used bendix brake pads. i was ok until i hit approximately 21 k miles. the dealer then told me i need new rotors. i then took it to my mechanic and replaced the rotors with the holed aftermarket rotors because they stay cool and will not heat up. within 300 miles after i replaced the rotors and shoes, the car started the same symptoms again. shaking when the brakes are applied. dodge should come out and recall the brakes on this crossover. my dealer told me that they use car brakes on this truck and they should have equipped it with truck brakes because it is too heavy. i bought this car with the expectation everyone has from a new car and i am very upset with dodge. they never covered any of the brake system under warranty and i am pouring all this money on this car that i do not trust. dodge should be sued for this car !!!!!*tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey. while driving 5 mph she heard a rubbing noise. the contact stated when she reached her destination she removed the tire from the vehicle and noticed that the front rotors and brake pads were worn. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or a local mechanic. the failure and current mileages were 21,629.

Purchase a dodge journey 2009. i inform the dealer that the windows were not coming down as they should. didn't get fixed. the keyless remote was suppose to be with the car it wasn't, they installed a after market keyless remote, don't work correct. the brakes were squeaking and could hear air within the car when applying brakes. i was told that there's nothing wrong and it was normal. it has been 4 to 5 months later now its not starting . contact chrsyler llc , told me i had to have it towed to a dealer , get diagnose , get it fixed and i have to pay for it all and they will reimburse half for the part , labor is all on me. the vehicle has done this no start problem 3 times in 2 and half days. also notice that the steering column gets hot for some unforeseen reason . inform the dealer i purchase my journey from , i was told that is normal. still have the journey can't trade in back because i have no money , so i am stuck with it . having it towed to dealer to get problem looked at and all expense is on me. what do i do . i think chrsyler will not repay me. i have to borrow money to get this done because this is my only transportation. i am scared that i might have a electrical fire while driving and will not notice it until it too late. what do i do. please help in richmond va. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey. the contact stated that he noticed a slight shimmy in the vehicle when applying the brakes. the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility for an oil change when the technician informed the contact of premature wear of the brake pads and rotors. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was awaiting repairs. the manufacturer was not notified. the current and failure mileage was approximately 14,000.

Vehicle has poor brake performance. front and rear brake pads worn out at 21,000 miles. dealer replaced pads and turned rotors. brakes have delay before slowing the vehicle (pre and post repair) and the vehicle requires a large distance to stop (greater than our previous suvs including chrysler pacific, dodge durango, jeep grand cherokee, and jeep liberty). *tr

I had no signs of problems with the brakes on my 2009 dodge journey. during routine maintenance (oil change, tire rotation), the dealer informed me that my calipers were "sticky" and that i should soon have the brakes done. then i started to hear a squealing noise a week or so ago. two nights ago i stopped at the mailbox and got out to get the mail and my rear brakes were glowing red, sparking and spitting. i took it to the dealer the very next day to get the brakes changed. turns out i need a complete overhaul of the entire brake system. new pads, rotors, calipers in the rear, and only 10% remaining in the front, for which i imminently need pads and rotors. dodge has got issues with their brakes that make them very unsafe -- and i have no choice but to replace the old shoddy parts with the same quality product. the same thing is going to happen again and again. i have never had to replace complete braking systems in the first year, in all my 30 plus years of owning a vehicle. *tr

Purchased vehicle new in june of 2009. front brakes gone and eating into rotors by 26,000 miles. little over a year. 90% of driving is freeway driving. very little stop and go. replaced brakes and had rotors turned. rotors warped and front and rear brakes gone again at 35,245 miles one year later. replaced front rotors and all 4 sets of brakes. front struts have gone out now as well. definitely too much weight for vehicle brakes and suspension. if not watched complete failure expected before recommended maintenance changes!! *tr

I own a 2009 dodge journey . i took the vehicle in for a oil change service when they told me that all brakes and rotors need to be replaced. the brakes and rotors are prematurely worn out. this should not happen at such a low mileage. there have been no repairs at this moment. the failure mileage was around 21,300. also, the front end makes loud noises when i back up and/or turning to the right. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey. while traveling at various speeds the contact noticed that when the brakes were applied he heard a grinding noise in the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the front rotors and brake pads needed to be replaced. there were no prior warnings. the current mileage was 23000 and the failure mileage was 20000.

Brake rotor and pad wear failure at 15k miles. brakes had to be replaced front and rear as the rotors had warped on a 2009 dodge journey with 15k miles of mostly highway driving ($1100). fault was noticed due to vibrations during braking. dodge refused to accept any liability for this issue and blamed poor braking. when replacing the rotors with new dealer supplied parts they are visibly thicker than the originals and i was advised by the dealership that these were more suited to the vehicle. should this not be the case when manufactured? check additional site for similar cases - http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/journey/2009/brakes/premature_brake_and_rotor_wear.shtml. there are 104 reported cases on this site alone.

2009 dodge journey brake problems. pads and rotors replaced on front @ 20k miles, rear pads replaced @35k miles. dealer claims 'normal wear and tear'. finally involved in an accident. car did not brake appropriately and rear-ended another car. safety concerns now over the engineering and design, perhaps the brakes are undersized for this car. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey. the contact stated that he took his vehicle in for an oil change and the mechanic stated that the front pads and rotors needed to be replaced even though the vehicle only had 19,000 miles on it. chrysler was contacted and stated that it was outside the 12 month wear and tear warranty period so the repairs would be at his expense. the vehicle was not repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure and current mileages were 19,000.

I currently owe a 2009 dodge journey it has 27000 miles on it. i have had to replace the front brakes twice and rotors once and now i have to replace the rear pads and rotors because they are warped. i would not recommend that anyone buys this vehicle. *tr

1) noise for the tires. under warranty no problem. 2) 19000 miles and need new rotors and brakes. ok now the brakes are out again and the mileage is on 34,000 and still under warranty 3) nothing was done i had to buy new rotors and brakes now i have to do it all over again . *tr

The other day i heard a slight squeaking as i approached a stop light (can't be the brakes, its a 2009 with 40k miles??). thought nothing of it, until yesterday i heard metal scraping, and i'm smart enough to know it was my rear brakes. after reading other reviews online about the 'new' dodge journeys, i'm fearing my appointment at the local dealership on monday. *tr

The brakes on 2009 dodge journey sxt need new pads at 14,000 miles. according to other reviews this is a common problems with this car. the brakes and rotors both front and back have to be replace every 14,000 to 15,000 miles and chrysler will not take responsibility for the problem. please make them recall the brakes and rotors as this is a safety issue. on edmuns.com consumers are begging other dodge journey owners to file a complaint so this problem can be fixed. *tr

We have replaced the brakes and rotors 5 times in my 2009 dodge journey with only 48,000 miles. dodge refuses to help or admit any fault . the car shakes so bad when braking it feels as if it's going to fall apart, this is extremely scary. *tr

My 2009 dodge journey brakes extremely prematurely worn out. brakes and rotors need replaced at 20000 miles. many others with same complaint go to carcomplaints.com. dodge needs to recall this vehicle for premature brakes replacing or reimburse customers for cost. my 18 year old daughter and my 16 year old son also drives this vehicle. this is a major danger to all that drive this vehicle. this sneaks up on you, it is not a gradual thing; they just start grinding all at once. please help! thank you in advance for your help in this matter. *tr

2009 dodge journey suv brakes and rotors premature wear, leaking roof, and more... brakes and rotors on the car had to be replaced twice on the front at less than 34,000 miles and once on the back at less than 39, 000 miles; this is a serious problem with this make & model and can cause some one there life. there are numerous complaints about this and they are not being accountable. chrysler-dodge needs to be held accountable for this and make the recall on the 2009 dodge journey and stop blaming this problem on the people who purchased it. *tr

Front brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced at 12k miles on our 2009 dodge journey. now we just had all brake lights go out. we took it to our mechanic and they found only 1 bulb bad. after the 1 bulb was replaced, all lights started working again. why would they put these bulbs in series rather than parallel so that only the bad bulb would be out rather than all? that is a big a safety problem in my opinion. also one tire now has a bulge in the sidewall and needs replaced. the vehicle has about 15k miles. *tr

I drive the dodge journey for 13 months from new. the car has now 32,500 miles on it. i had to replace brakes - pads and rotors three times. recently i found out that the rear tires are also worn - the lower part of the inside wall on both tires is worn not evenly? the local dealer, supported by dodge officials, claims this is normal wear and tear for this car, shirking the manufacturer's responsibility. *tr

I have a 2009 dodge journey and the front brakes failed after 29,686 miles. the dealer claims it is normal, this is not true. i am very conscious about braking, i keep my distance and do not make hard brakes unless needed. based on posted reports, many are having the same problem. i have never owned an automobile with a brake failure with less than 70,000 miles on it, never. brake failure is a safety concern of mine, it could harm the people in the car as well as some one else. dodge is not taking any responsibility for this design or material defect, what ever the case is, but they don't have any problem taking your money to keep repairing the problem. i am sure dodge will do nothing until a couple of people are killed due to brake problems with this type vehicle. *tr

Brakes and rotors are bad at only 15,000 miles..car has vibrating problem and was told i needed new brakes and rotors. *tr

I owned a dodge journey 2009 and all of the sudden my brakes started to grind. it felt like i had no brake power and sounded like it was metal to metal. i took it immediately to our authorized chrysler dealer and i was told i needed to replace front rotors and brake pads. i had purchased with this vehicle an extended warranty but was told rotors and pads were not covered even in case of premature wear : my car has only 22,000 miles. what is frustrating is that the brakes never squealed . how could i anticipated this ? the dealership is asking over $400 dollars to have the car repaired and based on what i am reading in this database, my brake problems might happen again very soon. *tr

I own a 2009 dodge journey and started hearing squeaky brakes for about 2 days when coming to a stop and then all of a sudden i could hear and feel a loud grinding noise. i could then begin to accelerate and noticed that there was a dragging noise as if the brakes had not let go. you could even see metal shavings on the left front rotor! i took the vehicle in and was told that the vehicle needed new rotors and brake pads. i asked why the premature problems and they said sorry this is a problem with new vehicles but that there was nothing they could do for me. i had to buy new rotors and brake pads out of pocket. *tr

Brand new car with brakes that are not substantial enough to carry the vehicles load so brakes prematurely wear as well as ruining the rotors have less than 23,000 miles on the car and also other owners have made same complaint on the same model and year manufacturer will fix if you have less than 12,000 miles but will not upgrade braking system to correct the issue nor will they even split cost the cost of brakes if you are over 12000 miles on vehicle this is a one year old 2009 dodge journey bought with 17 miles on it can substantiate my claim with other complaints on the dodge forum complaints website. *tr

Brake pads failed prematurely at 19529 miles (20% remaining). rotors needed machined. brakes should have a minimum wear warranty requirement. also the front struts, tie rods and waterpump needed replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey . the contact stated that he took the vehicle in for a oil change service when dealer told him that all brakes and rotors need to be replaced. the brakes and rotors are prematurely worn out and the contact stated that this should not happen at such a low mileage. there had been no repairs at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 15000 and the current mileage was 16001.

I bought my 2009 dodge journey sxt v6 brand new 12 miles on it and we love the car, and after numerous electrical issues such as power to radio, ac, lights ( not working while driving) and after many returns to dodge dealer for repairs, so far that problem fixed. my doors fill up with water every time it rains, dealership says that's normal, i've never heard water slouching round inside a door before, which i believe lead to the power windows failing. dealership fixed electrical window issue but get water in doors. the most important issue is at 9000 miles i had to take the car in, brakes were grinding, dealership replaced the brakes. now at 21000 miles it needs a complete new brake job done and they want to charge me about $500. the signs that the brakes were going brakes they started squeaking and then a week later my brakes are metal to metal. i believe this is a huge safety issue this is our family car. *tr

Vehicle brakes are too small/thin for this heavy of a vehicle. pads constantly need replacing. *tt

Front and rear brakes and rotors excessive wear. again on 29 dec 2010 brakes and rotors excessively worn at 15312 miles.

At 31,000 miles my 2009 dodge journey began shaking when brakes applied. had to replace both front and back brakes and rotors at a cost of $450. currently a shake exist in the chassis of the vehicle when i reach speeds of 50 mph or greater. tires where balance 3 times and final diagnosis by dealership is that i have one "egg shaped" kumho tire that kumho will not take responsibility for and would cost me $267.00 to change as there is only one manufacture of this tire. *tr

At 21,500 miles i was informed that my 2009 dodge journey r/t v6 needed new pads and rotors. i was further informed that this is normal. upon researching the issue, i have learned that this appears to be common and likely a design flaw that may put myself and others at risk on the road. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey. the contact was driving approximately between 45-50 mph. the brakes were engaged followed by a squealing noise and vibration. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the front brakes and rotors were replaced. the problem persisted after the vehicle was repaired. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for the replacement of the rear brakes and rear rotors. the failure mileage was 31,000. the vin was unavailable.

When i apply brake in high speed (50-75 mph) the wheel vibrates (dodge journey 2009 and chrysler cirrus 2007). *tr

Brakes and rotor issues on 2009 dodge journey, at 15,400 miles my brakes started grinding one day out of no where and the pads need to be replaced and rotors machined already. in looking at various sites this seems to be a prevalent problem with this vehicle. *tr

Brakes are bad on my 2009 dodge journey. all of a sudden the brakes started grinding. took it to the dealership to find out that the front brakes mainly the left front was completely worn metal to metal. the car doesn't even have 20k miles on it. i haven't even had it a year. this should be under warranty but dealership says it is normal. normal is 40-50k before brakes go bad or show signs of a needed replacement. the wear indicators on the pads didn't even sound, just one day metal to metal. there needs to be a recall, this is very dangerous for everyone who owns a journey. *tr

Driving the vehicle from my house to a destination approx 100 miles away. during the drive, all of a sudden the brakes started grinding without warning. brought the vehicle into dealership where they told me that the brakes were shot and had to be replaced. this was a cost of 370.00. the vehicle had only 19000 miles on it and the brakes were worn down to the rivets. i have been investigating this problem and "everybody" who owns a 2009 dodge journey has the same problem and dodge is not doing anything about it. they are telling the customers that this is normal. *tr

Brake failure brakes and rotors worn to a dangerous condition premature without and warning or panel light.

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 dodge journey. while driving 25 mph, approaching a stop light, the contact applied her foot on the brakes and heard a loud grinding noise. the contact then engaged the accelerator pedal and noticed that there was a dragging noise as if the brakes had not released. a diagnostic test was performed which indicated that the vehicle needed new rotors and brake pads. the rotors and brake pads were replaced under the warranty. the failure mileage was 11,100. the current mileage was 11,180.
