We have classified the 248 complaints from 2000 Dodge Intrepid about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
The engine stalled without warning, prior to the incident, the vehicle made a ticking noise. *jb
Consumer heard a "tapping" noise coming from the motor and front wheel area. dealer diagnosed that there was no oil on dip stick and motor oil level was low. vehicle was serviced and problem resolved. after driving for 5 days the "tapping" noise returned at speeds of 65 mph. consumer took vehicle back the to dealer who diagnosed that oil sludged was in the motor and the rods were burned on the top and bottom of motor with metal shavings in motor. the dealer stated the vehicle needed a new engine. *jb
My 2000 dodge intrepid engine failed with no warning. i had the car 6 months prior to this incident. the warranty company states that it was due to lack of lubrication and there was engine sludge. i have had 2 oil changes prior to the engine failure. i paid $4428 to have my car repaired. *ak
On mar 29th, 2003 my 2000 dodge intrepid check engine light came on and the vehicle began stalling. i took it to a local garage. after placing it on their computer, i was told the vehicles' cam sensor needed replaced. i also had the mechanic change the spark plugs. both of which had to be ordered through the dealer. $200 dollars later, i picked the vehicle up and drove approx. 5 miles before the same thing happened again. i took it back to the garage who advised me that i should have the dealership look into it. once at the dealership, i was told i need a crank sensor. another $200 dollars later, my wife picked the vehicle up, drove it no more than 2 blocks from the dealership where it stalled on her and my two children in the middle of us 52 in ohio. now, after not having my vehicle for almost a month, i am told by the dealership the timing chain might need replaced which will easily cost $300 labor for 6hr of work, and at least $200 for the new timing chain. in less than a month i will have spent at least $900 on a problem yet to be actually verified as the problem needing fixed. *nlm
I own a 2000 intrepid by dodge with approximately 43000 miles on it. the engine has been blown and i was informed that we have to pay for the repair to be done because of sludge in the engine.. i have an extended warranty on this vehicle that i bought at the time of purchase.. because of the fact that we do our own oil changes and the only thing we are guilty of is not keeping receipts that we have bought oil and filters to change it.. we have documentation on dates and mileage that we have had them done.. in fact the last one was done at a place of business. the vehicle started making a clanking noise while i was driving , no warning light or any such light came on the instrument panel whatsoever i proceeded to pull over in a parking lot and shut the car off, and it would not start, i had the car towed to dealership..they have now had my car for 3 weeks at the dealership. dodge corporate is saying that they have nothing to do with this complaint because of the fact that the extended warranty is not through them, the dealership can use whom ever they want to for extended warranties. i have searched many complaints and this is an ongoing problem with these engine's. my extended warranty is for 7 years or 75000 mile which ever comes first.. i had a different dealership look at my car first and we had to pay them almost 400.00 to have them look at the vehicle and tell us the warranty people will not fix it. they also informed us that the time chaining had blown and when that happens yes there will be sludge and whatever else. which why you have to replace the whole engine. i have researched this and know that there is numerous complaints on this particular car and engine. please can you advise and help.. as an added note the car also smells like it is burning oil. *jb

The vehicle stalled without warning. *jb
I own a 2000 chrysler intrepid v6-2.7 liter vehicle. at 57,442 miles i noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine of the car. the dealership i purchased the car from diagnosed the engine noise as a non-compressing or extending timing chain tensioner. the tensioner was replaced and the cost was covered under my 60,000-mile warranty. last week i noticed the same ticking noise while i was driving the car. before i could reach a safe destination the car engine completely stopped running at 64,222 miles. after coming to a stop the car would not start again. i had the car towed to the dealership to be looked at and told the service advisor i heard the same timing chain noise that occurred at 57,442 miles. the dealership service advisor stated that they were able to start the car for a short period of time and also checked the engine oil. the service advisor informed me that i would need a new engine at a price of approximately $6,700.00?! i asked the service advisor if a diagnostic test was performed and he said ??no??. by looking at my oil level and listening to my engine noises the service advisor recommended an entirely new engine. i was accused of not changing my engine oil regularly even though i do. i asked about repairing non-working parts of the engine but the service advisor told me it would most likely cost more than a new engine considering the labor hours involved with this type of repair. the service advisor was so sure that i needed a new engine after only checking the oil and listening to the engine noises. i have found web sites with hundreds of people having similar problems with the v6-2.7 liter dodge/chrysler engine (engine failure without warning, very prematurely, and dealerships they went to said they didn't change their oil often enough). *nlm
Last week i was exiting the highway on an off-ramp and noticed the engine had stalled. it was running great one second and the next second it just quit with no warning! i had it towed to a mechanic for service and was informed that my engine needed to be replaced. the mechanic said that it looked like a bomb went off in my engine and he was not sure of the cause but it was most likely because the timing chain broke. *jb
My 2000 dodge intrepid presently has sludge in the engine, and my extend warranty will not pay for any repairs. my car sounded like a diesel engine as if something had broke within the engine, this all happen on march 5th, 2003 i supplied documentation to show that my oil was changed as required but to know avail would the warranty company assist me in repairing my engine or even given me any alternatives other than it would cost me $10,500.00 to repair. the shop manager explained to me that the 2.7 engines are really crap and there is not much that can be done to correct this obvious defect. i am extremely disappointed that these engines were not recalled, for as long as i have been an owner of cars i have never had an engine go out or will be going out without any warning. i want to be included in the class action suit that is pending with dodge/intrepid problems. *nlm

At under 60,000 miles on my 2000 dodge intrepid, w/2.7l v-6 engine developed an extremely loud engine knock. in speaking with others in the automotive industry, that make their living working on cars, they've all told me that "yes, this is indeed a problem with that engine", and that they're personally aware of numerous others that have experienced the same fate. chrysler corp is doing nothing about it whatsoever, and i'm left with a non working car that i still owe $4,000 on, and for a new engine, i'm looking at close to $6,500, and the car can't be sold for that much. something needs to be done to get chrysler corp to step up to the plate, and honor their name, and pay for or reimburse the thousands of consumers across the country that have had the same problems with their vehicles. just do a search on the internet, and you'll find endless complaints of the same exact thing, low mileage engine failures on that particular engine, the 2.7 l v-6. *nm
The engine made a loud noise while being driven eventually causing the engine not to operate. *jb
While driving oil pressure light illuminated on the dashboard followed by unwanted deceleration. vehicle was taken to the dealership, who indicated that oil pressure sensor failed, and needed to be replaced. the sensor was replaced, the engine was flushed, and an oil change performed. the failure recurred. dealership then replaced the oil pump. the unwanted deceleration recurred without the oil light coming on, and vehicle lost oil pressure. dealership replaced the timing belt, and gear shift. also, had to drop the oil pan to check for sludge in the engine. *ak
Shortly after purchasing vehicle it started experiencing engine problems. consumer said that it was making weird rattling noises. after a number of inspections by a mechanic, the sound was due to lack of oil pressure. *la the engine started racing and making a louder noise. the mechanic determined that it was the tensioner which was replaced. on another occasion the vehicle chugged and was impossible to steer and would barely move. the consumer was told that the vehicle needed a new engine. there were other vehicles with the same engine problems. *sc *jb
Without any prior warning car would not start after stopping to get gas. car was towed to dealer where it was discovered that the timing chain had shattered sending slivers of metal throughout the engine causing compression problem, damaging pistons, and causing water pump to seize up. needless to say i'm now looking to buy engine for a car that i've had for under 24months and still have 36+months to go on my note with the engine only having 65k. note the driver side seat back did break and i've had to have speed sensor replace all of this within the last 17 months.*jb
Timing chain broke and valves were damaged, which (according to mechanics) virtually is unheard of on such a late model car. not only are mechanics refusing to repair the problem (because of the type of engine), they are saying i will probably need a new engine (upwards of $3500 in cost). several mechanics expressed that they have seen several people with this problem who have the 6 cylinder, 2.7 liter engine on this year, make and model of car. basically, i was told that working on this problem with this type of car is a big headache, and "they won't touch it". why hasn't this problem been recalled?
Dt: the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. the vehicle has a knocking noise coming from the engine. the contact had this problem before. the first time the dealership had to replace the engine. it was done under warranty. they kept car for one month and took pictures of the car, and did not supply the contact with a rental car. currently, the engine needed to be replaced again. warranty expired, and the contact will have to pay for it. the dealership did not know why the engine had to be replaced excessively. the dealership will not look at the vehicle because the warranty expired. the dealership did not tell her that they put a new engine in before she had to contact chrysler, and they told her they replaced it. the first time car broke down at 45,000 miles, and they only gave her 1 year warranty. now at 54,000 miles the engine needed to be replaced again. the car was over warranty and mileage, but new engine has not been in that long and did not have a lot of miles on it.*ak
The oil lamp came on while sitting at a stoplight, the engine tachometer read below 500rpm and the vehicle was up to temperature. once the vehicle accelerated through the light the oil lamp turned off. at the next stoplight the oil lamp again came on under the same conditions. after this the vehicle seemed ok. a few days later the oil light came on under the same conditions. an appointment was then made to have the vehicle serviced. before taking the vehicle in to the dealership the engine was started and made a light ticking noise. this noise did not continue after the engine was shut off and allowed to cool down overnight. the vehicle was towed to the dealership for fear of damaging the engine further. the dealership found that the oil sending unit was not working properly, and also was leaking oil. they found no problems with the oiling system and assured me that the oil pressure and volume was within chrysler's specifications. the dealership replaced the oil sensor for time and material being the vehicle was out of waranty. on the way home from the dealership the engine started making a very loud knocking sound although the oil lamp was not on. the car was then taken to a local repair shop and the timing chain tensioner was found to be stuck allowing slack in the timing chain. after replacing the tensioner with a new tensioner from the dealership and reassembling the engine, the knocking noise was noticibly quieter but still indicated a problem. (note: the engine made no knocking noise at all when cold, it only knocked when up to temperature) the repairman contacted a contact at a different dealership and was informed off of the record that they also had an intrepid in for the same thing, and they had to also replace the timing chain and timing chain guides to rid the vehicle of the knocking sound when up to temperature. the vehicle is curently at the repair shop waiting for the additional parts to see if this remidies the problem.
While driving the fuel light illuminated on the dashboard then the vehicle stalled. consumer contacted dealership on four separate occasions, but the problem still occurs. *ak after further inspection it was determined that the engine had blown. *nm

Dedember 2002 started car and engine making terrible noise. took it to the dealer and the engine had went out. they had to re-do the engine that cost me $1350.00. i had been hearing a knocking from the front of the car and the steering was loose. when i tyrned the wheel left or right it would stick and i had loud popping from the steering. i took it to the dealer and it was the rack and pinion. that was on january 21, 2003. in the same week i noticed oil leaking. the oil light was blinking on and off. the dealer said it was leaking due to the oil switch. to fix the rack and oil leak it cost me another $1300.00. i am trying to get the dodge company to fess up and pay for the repairs. the car has been well maintanenced and only 51,000 miles.
I purchased a 2000 dodge intrepid 2 years ago. in nov 2001, after 1 year of owning the car, the engine sludged, started knocking, & quit. it has been sitting in a garage for 1 year because i do not have the $5000 to get it replaced, but i am still making payments on it. i changed the oil regularly also, but after speaking with numerous mechanics, they all said the same thing. dodge engines are terrible, & unless you use high quality synthetic oil, & change the oil consistently every 3000 miles, it will sludge and break down. the dealership i purchased this car from did not inform me of this. i have also read numerous reports regarding the problems with this engine. i cannot believe that dodge has not recalled this engine. i understand that when you get the engine replaced now, it comes with a kit to be installed to prevent this from happening. *la
At 90,015 serviced miles, the vehicle was traveling at 60 mph. check engine light came on and the engine failed. driver coasted to a stop several hundred feet. tensioner failed after motor seized up. dealer offered to install new engine for >$4500 and was told to call national number. dodge told me that my only recourse was in court, and that was the end of the conversation. *nlm
I own a 2000 intrepid with 29000 on it and the engine has blown on it (premature engine failure) and it is still under warranty and daimler chrysler has refused to pay costs related to this because i don't have all my receipts for oil changes. it is a 2.7 l engine and they are aware of engine sludge problems with this engine and they will not pay any costs toward a repair bill which they have quoted at $8000.00. initially the engine caught on fire and they made my insurance company pay for the repairs and then 30 miles later the engine was blown and they say because my husband did the oil changes and we don't have all the receipts for oil purchases they will not pay the bill. we have the receipts for the winter months( of which i have only had the car for one winter and i have that receipt and the receipt for oil and flushing fluid after the fire started they now say we need the receipts for all oil changes. i have looked at other web sites for premature engine failure with that same engine size and there are many under chrysler engine sludge and i have a family member who has worked in the auto industry for 20 years and knows that chrysler is having a problem with this particular size having engine sludge and it is well known among the mechanics but they will not come forward for fear of losing their jobs. *nlm
While driving the vehilces oil light came on, then there was a loud knocking noise from the engine, then the vehicle died out. consumer had vehicle serviced by the dealership who indicated that the 2.05 engine had blown as a result of an oil leak. they also indicated that the part is hard to get due to this being a common problem with this make/model vehicle. please provide more details.
Engine blown at 48,500 miles. was told it was the 2.7 engine that sludge had built up in it even though we maintained it regularly. cost about $6,000 when was said and done. we contacted chrysler as we heard they were having problems with this engine and that they are aware but refused to help in anyway. rude! we were told this engine needed oil changed every 1,500 - 2000 miles to keep from sludging up.. this is not right... *nlm

While driving 70 mph , the vehicle stalled. the consumer managed to pull over, and had the vehicle towed. the dealership was notified. *ak the engine has had the following parts replaced: knock sensor (2), crankshaft sensor (1), all main bearings in the crankshaft, all connecting rod bearings and engine complete gasket set. these parts were installed as apart of an engine overhaul. the vehicle had ran for about 20k to 22k miles before it begun to knock again. (currently the vehicle is out of service) the knock occurred on the #6 journal of the crankshaft. mechanics suggested that something in the engine was out of alignment. *sc *jb

I have found an excellent and informative website against daimler chrysler at www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com for anyone who would like more information mainly in regard to intrepid, 300m, concorde, lhs premature engine, steering, transmission and other common failures. i have experienced many of these problems myself and daimler chrysler simply does not care, i could have even been killed in one instance. after own another vehicle and putting nearly 30,000 miles on it i have not had any of the ridiculous problems experienced with chrysler's dodge brand of vehicles. there is a lot of information consumers need to know that daimler chrysler does not want you to know about these vehicles and their common problems chrysler ignores, some of which are potential safety concerns such as the defective seat belt design chrysler continues to use and defective steering design and or components that can cause sudden looseness or change of response in steering, which can lead to a serious accident. these guys have been receiving complaints daily about these problems and have been referring consumers to the nhtsa, i hope that in turn the nhtsa will add this to the list of their complaints so others will also know about this. thank you very much for your time. *nlm

I own a 2000 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 liter dohc that the engine had siezed at 87,000 miles ,maintenance was kept as required, this seems to be a major problem among other owners with the same engine type, when we took the car to the dealer and showed him the reciepts for the oil changes, the mechanic stated that because the car was 500 miles over the limit for the current oil changethe engine had too much sludge causing the engine to sieze.price quoted for a new engine $8,000.00. *ak
The mechanics were unable to correct the stalling/rough ride problems. in attempts to repair the problems the dealer cleaned and replaced the spark plugs and replaced the fuel system. when the vehicle felt as if it were going to stall, the consumer smelled sulfur coming from the engine area and the check engine light illuminated. *scc *nlm
