Problems with 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 101 460 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan

I was driving approximately 50 mph on a city street when my engine shut off. i lost all engine power; tank went to empty and it was incredibly hard to turn the steering wheel as well as brake. the best i could, i pulled over, put the van in park and restarted it. i drove home. i called the dodge dealership and they said that since no dash lights came on, no codes would be stored, and to keep driving the vehicle until it happened again. i have an appointment scheduled with them for 11/19/15 (the soonest possible appointment.) i am uncertain if this is related; however, sometimes my "key" doesn't lock or unlock the van. in august, two times the van wouldn't start right away (2-3 tries) and on september 6, it didn't start after multiple tries. about an hour later, it started with a grinding sound, which sounded to be coming from the right passenger side of the dashboard. no dash lights. it has started fine since then.

My 2010 dodge grand caravan stalls without warning while driving. the stalling has occurred four times and each time i was almost rear ended. the last time it stalled was october 6, 2015 and the first time spring 2011. the stalling has occurred two times on a city street, once on the highway and once on a highway off ramp. it occurs at any speed. when the engine stalls, the van loses the power steering and brakes. once i can stop the van and put it in park or neutral, it has restarted. when i took the van to the dealer no codes could be read. the engine stalling has occurred prior to and after the replacement ignition parts were installed from the march 1, 2011 (nhtsa reference #11v139000) recall and the june 26, 2014 (#14v373000) recall. the engine stalling is a very dangerous situation because it occurs without warning. after reading online there are many people having this same problem, so please investigate.

The heater hose y pipe is defective. it's made of plastic, and it lasted less than 5 years before it burst at the seams and sprayed coolant all over the engine compartment when my wife and four children were driving on the highway, leaving them stranded. there was absolutely no warning before it burst, and there is no maintenance that will prevent this from happening. the part is defective, and this is a common problem with these dodge models. an internet search shows that this problem is happening everywhere.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. after removing the key from the ignition switch and exiting the vehicle, the contact discovered that the engine and the instrument panel lights remained on. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the ignition switch was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 131,000. updated 01/27/16*lj *js

Car stalls while i am driving it. took it to car dealer and it doesn't pop up with codes, so they say they can't figure out what is wrong. head over mechanics drove it and he was driving it at 30 miles an hour and it turned off and he said he almost wrecked my car. mechanic also duplicated it, but no codes, so they are saying they don't know what to fix. it is the only transportation i have, but is very dangerous to drive as when it stalls i have no power steering or brakes. i am at my wits end, because i have tried to reach chrysler itself and all i get is customer service and they have a case open, but getting no results. i also have clunking in my transmission, but again no codes. i am at my wits end and don't know where to go from here. i can't afford to keep putting money in this car and it not get fixed. i still owe 5 years on this car also. i have had people riding in the car with me when it has happened. i am going to put a date at this end here, but not sure of when it first started happening, but know that the transmission started happening last year and told them about it and they said that was natural for that type of engine, but they hadn't even drove it.

I received a letter concerning recall r03/nhtsa 14v-373 in june of 2015. on friday, july 31, we found that the van would not start, but when the key was turned a few times, it would. thinking that this could possibly be related in some way to the recall, i carefully read the document that stated this could cause unintended engine shut off and increase the risk of a crash. the document said nothing about problems initially starting the van. on tuesday, august 4, as the van would only intermittently start, i brought the van to a local repair shop. the local repair shop diagnosed the problem as a defective starter. after they installed the starter, they told me that they had then done some research and that there was a recall out for this problem. they still charged me $390.00. i dropped off the van this morning with three chrysler key fobs, otherwise known as a frequency operated button ignition key or fobik, and an additional aftermarket key fob made by ilco, which performs the same functions as the oem key fobs do. the people at larchmont chrysler jeep dodge ram stated that this recall only would replace oem chrysler key fobs. 1)why does it take three months to set up a date for a safety recall? 2)why did the notice not mention anything about ignition problems but only unintended engine shutoff? the way this notice is written, most people would infer that the engine would already be on and one would be driving to experience this difficulty. 3)why, when a local van was brought to a local repair shop, didnt this diagnostic code immediately mention the recall and state that the recall part is the problem, not the $390 starter? 4)why, if a person has gone through the ridiculous expense and bother of getting four key fobs which all function, and that it is chryslers fault entirely for the problem, cant an additional key fob be provided?

I am driving and all of a sudden car shuts off, then i have no power steering or brakes. can put in neutral and turn it back on. has a habit of doing it several times in a day.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start after numerous times. the failure recurred continuously. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who stated that the tipm needed to be replaced; however, the part was unavailable to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

My wife started our van and it didn't start. she got it started and went a few miles down the road. after stopping at a stop sign she took off and was going approximately 35 mph when the vehicle abruptly stalled. she lost power steering and was able to get it stopped before going into the ditch. had she been traveling faster she probably would have wrecked. she had my two year old with her and is currently 13 weeks pregnant. ....updated 11/02/15*bf updated 1/4/2016*js updated 11/22/2017*cn

Key went from on position to accessory while car was stopped at red light. we were able to restart and continue on our way. this could have easily caused a crash if the car were still moving in traffic.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled and was able to restart. in addition, the key to the vehicle fractured in the ignition switch and the contact was unable to remove the key. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

While driving my 2010 dodge grand caravan, on numerous occasions, i have lost all power leading to the inability to steer. last event, i was in a round about and, switching into neutral, was barely able to prevent a crash. i have nothing attached to my key fob. this is the known ignition problem and i find it unacceptable that chrysler thinks it is ok to wait until august to fix this. this is extremely dangerous. i do not have the means to get a new vehicle and with 2 young children, this is extremely dangerous. please force them to move faster to correct this problem!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact came to a complete stop and the vehicle restarted after one minute. the vehicle was driven to the dealer, where the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 97,100.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and the abs warning light illuminated. the contact had to maneuver to the side of the road to a complete stop. after a minute, the vehicle restarted normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they were not able to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact also stated that the failure recurred six other times. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Key fob on recall for over six months. engine will occasionally shut down while driving. key sometimes not recognized and must be reinserted to start. can not get dodge on the phone. dealers have no suggestions. *tr

The vehicle cuts off at normal operating speed on bumpy surfaces or after going over bumps in the road. vehicle lost power steering, braking, and the engine cuts off. this resulted in and emergency exit from the lane of travel. this has happened multiple times over the past 12 months. this appears to be the same symptoms of a current recall for the ignition switch on similar vehicles of this model. dodge makes no attempt to assist with verifying that there is an issue. *tr

While driving the 2010 dodge grand caravan it suddenly stalls. there does not appear to be a reason behind it, at least the dealer is unable to pinpoint it. it has happened 4 times, with the most recent being just after having it into the dealer where they replaced the battery and the battery cable and did an oil change, with a total cost of $325. however, they also said it may be the module that needs to be replaced at a cost of over $600.00. however, they apparently do not know or just trying to run up the cost of repairing the vehicle. i see a lot of others who are complaining about stalling problems with no satisfaction. what is the problem??? this is a serious safety problem as stalling can occur anywhere and involve serious accidents. *tr

The vehicle just quite--it died in the middle of the road... there was a recall on this vehicle from chrysler but they stopped 2 months before this one.. called the dealer and they said sorry... it happened numerous times... the recall was on the ignition module which was what they changed on my van..$850.00 dollars worth. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and multiple independent mechanics, who were unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was made aware of nhtsa campaign number: 14v373000 (electrical system, air bags). the failure mileage was 71,000.

On or about december 5th 2014, my wife attempted to start the above mentioned vehicle with no success. we had to have it towed from colonial beach, va to safford automotive in fredericksburg, va to be repaired. after diagnosing, the win module was found to be bad also both door modules flashed bad. win module was replaced and two new key fobs had to be issued and programmed. our cost was $906.65. this item was on the recall list but we were made to pay out of pocket. we have spoken to the dealer and the better business bureau but have not been successful. we feel it is unfair that we were made to pay for something that was recalled. this expense caused a significant hardship to our family. we hope you are able to help us get our money back. thank you in advance for your help. we are in possession of both the recall notice as well as the original receipt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle lost power. the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate. in addition, the traction control warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure persisted and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who diagnosed that the totally integrated power module (tipm) needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who diagnosed that a valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 55,000.

While driving, the engine shut off causing the power steering and brakes to not respond. i muscled the car around a corner, restarted and continued home. *tr

Ignition switch became "loose" started to have trouble with the switch being inoperable - could not start the van with the switch. a couple times the vehicle turned off while idling to warm up. *tr

I've been waiting for the longest time, for the dodge dealership to replace the part, or parts that the recall people, was recalling the vehicle for. but instead, they keep telling me that the part, or parts hasn't come in yet. i've been having on going problems since forever, with this vehicle dying out on me, and my family;__too many times. and not only that! but my money is very important to me too. and i don't like paying out my money;__towards anything, that has been a continuos problem for me, and my family. sent on: thursday_01/21/2016.

The ignition key was displaced from the run to the accessory position while driving, causing the engine to shut off. i called dodge and they stated this car was already recalled for this problem in 2011 and according to them was fixed at that time. i bought the car in 2012 used and this problem reappeared. *tr

The vehicle stalls while driving between 30 and 35 mph. there is no warning and it just quits. when it does you lose all power steering and electrical systems. there is no rhyme or reason as to when this happens - it can be shortly after starting the morning drive or after you have been driving for 20 minutes. it also happens sporadically so it is very hard to determine if and when it will happen. we have had the car checked many times by the dealer where we purchased the vehicle and they have not been able to find anything. it has continued to stall sporadically over the past 5-6 months. we now see that there is a recall for 2010 dodge caravans based on this faulty ignition switch, however the dealer informs us that our car is not included in the recall and there is nothing they can do. *tr

Several times while driving out of neighborhood the van will shut off without warning. engine dies causing power steering to not function either. it has recently become more frequent and has now begun to die even after warming up and at higher speeds. *tr

I live in troy michigan and on a trip to go pick up my teenage daughter driving.on m-59 my car started expelling coolant in the form.of steam from underneath the hood and inside the vehicle. i immediate stopped at the closest automotive store.less.than a mile from where it started the incident. it was discovered by the mechanic at bell tire that the steel intercooler lines that run to the interior heater had ruptured. i contacted chrysler as steel tube should not fail unless some manufacture issue was overlooked. as a senior systems engineer mean time before failure on a component like this should have never happened at the low mileage on the vehicle. i followed up to find.out cost to repair and the sales rep also let me know that a second grand caravan 2008 model had just come.in with the same failure. this is absolutely chrysler failure to engineer this correctly and i would.lile to see this resolved before greater damage is done. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning on multiple occasions. while driving 40 mph, the contact touched the ignition and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to be restarted. in addition, the instrument panel warning indicators and gauges failed at random. while driving at night, the headlights flickered and failed to illuminate occasionally. an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and stated that the tipm needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 77,431.

In the first drive of the day (no matter what time of the day) within 4 blocks of my home, the vehicle stalls while driving. this has so far happened 8 times over the last 9 months. this incident has occurred with 3 different drivers and in the same exact location 7 out of the 8 times. vehicle is always coasting (not accelerating) around 20 miles per hour. when this incident occurs, the engine turns off, which disables the steering, brakes, and acceleration. this leaves the driver and its passengers in serious, potentially lethal, danger. we have taken this vehicle multiple times to the dealership, and they claim that this vehicle is not included in the recall. they state that there are no error codes. *tr

original owner of the vehicle, recall for faulty ignition switch was applied in 2011. this is actually a report of 3 incidents, (#3 the most dangerous) the engine of the vehicle suddenly shuts off while driving. it is instant and silent, with no pre-warning like one would normally experience in a classic engine stall. vehicle was taken directly to the dealership where they said that they could not reproduce the problem and that there were no codes. they suggested that i keep driving it to see if it happens again! they also suggested (an educated guess) that i change the egr valve. here are descriptions of the 3 events - the last one was the most dangerous and scary: .#1 dec 31, 2013. outdoor temp below 32 degrees. car shut off while pulling out from a stop sign, about 2-3 blocks after being started. car was not rough idling, or showing any other signs of a problem. it just seemed like someone reached over and turned the key to "acc" because the blowers and radio were still on, but the engine, power steering and power brakes were gone. the car started right back up. #2 march 1, 2014. outdoor temp about 32 degrees, similar situation, pulling out after a light turned green, turning right and the car just shut off again. again i would call it a cold engine, as this happened within 5 minutes of starting the car. also no sign of a problem with the engine. it started right back up. #3 may 23, 2014. outdoor temp about 50 degrees. had driven about 1 mile, (engine still cold), and was at the speed limit of 35-40mph and starting to turn with the curve in the road (a very modest curve)when the car just shut off and started wanting to go straight (no power steering) veering towards the oncoming lane. once again, the engine started right up and was acting normal before and after the stall/shut down. *tr

Engine shut down while driving 60 mph down the expressway. this was the 29th occurrence. the 30 happened while i was driving over a bridge in our neighborhood two weeks later at about 20 mph. *tr

Transmission feels like it is going to come out of the front end of my car. it makes the car move forward when it does it. notified dealer and they tried it, it did not do it for them, so they say they can not fix it. tried it once. under warranty, but no codes again.

Our 2010 dodge grand caravan is over consuming oil. we have a normal oil change done and before we get to the 3000 miles when the next one is to be done the van is dry/out of oil! the light comes on the dash indicating there is no oil and the oil level in the van does not even reach the dip stick, it is completely dry. we took the van in april 2014 to zeigler in downers grove, il and they had us come back every 1000 miles to check again, each time it was at least 1.5 or so quarts low. they would top it off and say come back in 1000 miles. that is not normal a vehicle should not keep needing oil to be added and if no oil is added it is empty before you have driven 3000 miles. since the dealer was no help saying it is normal, which this is not, i have never had to add oil to any of my vehicles between oil changes, today we called chrysler to handle the problem...all chrysler would do was call the dealer who told them this is normal and said that they have to side with the dealer and not fix the problem...we paid for an extended warranty on this van and it needs to be fixed asap before the warranty is up!!!! *tr

With 4000 miles since last oil change, the oil light came on while driving down the road. put 2 quarts of 5w20 oil in the engine and it was still below the add line on the dipstick. dealer stated that they don't know what is causing it and they would charge me $50 just to see what is wrong and to see if the warranty covers it. *tt

The ignition moved itself from start to accessory, shutting of the engine, disabling the power steering and brakes. luckily i was already coming to a stop otherwise my lack of power steering and power brakes would have caused me to crash by the time i realized what had happened. *tr

I was driving down the road and i noticed that my steering was tight. when i looked down, my rpm's were on 0, my car had shut off and the traction control light came on. i pulled over to the side of the road, put car in park and it started right up. this happened again a few weeks after that, going the same speed. brakes & steering gave out, was able to coast to side of road, put car in park and it started right up. on march 28th i was driving into work, going approx. 45-50 mph, noticed that my steering got tight, car had shut off again. thankfully i was in the outside lane so i could pull over. car started right up. it happened a 4th time on april 2, 2014. this time i felt the steering wheel getting tight, i put car in neutral and it started right up. every time this happens my car shuts off first and then there is a 1-2 second delay before the traction control steering light comes on. my car is at the dealership right now, waiting to hear. i checked on the ignition recall for the 2010 grand caravans and i was told that my vin# does not fall into the recall dates. this is very dangerous for myself, my family and others on the road. i am afraid to drive my car!! *tr

On several occasions (5 to date) the engine has stalled while the vehicle is moving at a steady speed. each time the vehicle has been moving at less than 20mph and has been running for a relatively short period of time 5-10 min from cold start. we took the car to the dealer, but no codes were set and they couldn't find anything wrong. they say the engine is not due for maintenance for another 15,000 miles. we are extremely disappointed in this response given the seriousness of having the engine stall while the car is moving. heaven forbid it occur while on the highway. *tr

Five separate times while driving this van the engine just shuts down and we coast to a stop. this has happened at various speeds, the last event occurred while driving on the expressway at an aprox. speed of 55-60 mph. speed of the van does not seem to matter as we have had this occur at speeds ranging from 15-60 mph. weather also does not seem to matter as the events happened in winter and summer. we have reported this problem to the dodge dealership. they kept our van for a week attempting to have the problem occur for them without success. we are fearful every time we drive this van because when the engine shuts off we lose power to the steering and brakes. this is dangerous! chrysler does not seem to have a solution to this problem. help! *tr

Driving through a school zone to take my daughter to school. the engine just stopped with no warning. this caused me to loose power steering and brakes. this happened on 6 subsequent occasions in different areas and at different speeds between november 2013 and march 2014 the most recent was march 11, 2014. *tr

I was pulling out of a side street onto a main road when the engine shut off. this was the second time within the past month that this happened. about a week after i had the second ignition failure i received a recall notice (l25) from chrysler telling me that they had a problem with their frequency operated button ignition key (fobik) that causes the engine to shut down while driving. when i called the chrysler group recall assistance center (1-800-853-1403) they told me that the parts to fix the problem were not available and, even though the vehicle had shut down twice, they didn't care and wouldn't provide a loaner/rental vehicle until the repair was made. this is a similar situation that gm dealt with recently and did provide temporary replacement vehicles. *tr

i've been dealing with an oil consumption problem for over 20,000 miles now.i have a case # with chrysler headquarters but the dealer can't find where the oil is going.i was three quarts low at one oil change and chrysler said that is within their limits of one quart every 750 miles for a vehicle over 50,000 miles.i find that unacceptable.that would mean i would be 8 quarts low in an engine that only has 5 quarts at a 6000 mile oil change.i've found many other people,on line.with the same problem.one tech.said to write your dept.since i had no other place to turn. *tr

The distance was about 35 miles from our home, bout 45 minutes drive. driver didn't notice anything wrong with the engine or see any warning lights. the car was swaying like on a windy day, another car honked at us, then we heard loud road noise. we pulled over and turned off the engine. saw the rear passenger tire was flat to the rim. noticed a smoky smell. saw little puffs of white smoke coming from under the hood. to be safe we removed children from the car; two 4 yr old children were in the backseat buckled in their car-seats. infant was in the middle drivers side seat buckled in his car seat. driver and car owner were in the front. keys were removed from the ignition. we walked away from the vehicle, waited at the fence-line away from the vehicle while calling for a tow. smoke appeared to have stopped for about 5 minutes. suddenly black smoke started pouring out of the engine, embers dropping to the road from under the front of the car. we moved the children further away from the vehicle. several truckers pulled over and brought fire extinguishers. one opened the hood flames flared up the fire truck arrived after the fire had been extinguished. one said the fire appeared to have started in the fan. the chp officer said the firefighters would disconnect the battery. when we looked at the inside of the front of the car everything was burnt and melted, the hood was buckled, front grill melted. the fire was extinguished before the rest of the car was damaged. *tr

Jan 31, 2:00pm i parked the vehicle to pick my son up from pre-school. after securing my children to their respective car seats, i buckled myself in and proceeded to start the engine, the vehicle's engine would not start. strong electrical-smelling fumes were emitted and the etc light came on. we had the vehicle towed to a jeep, dodge, & chrysler dealership for servicing for 5 days. the service tech insisted that nothing was detected aside from slight corrosion in the battery plugs, which needed to be replaced. we did what was advised and took our vehicle back on feb 6. feb 13, 9:45am after making a quick stop at a grocery store, the same problem occurred. the vehicle engine would not start, but the radio was coming on. i turned off the vehicle and proceeded to restart the vehicle. once again the etc light came on and this time, white smoke was coming out from under the hood. after seeing the smoke, i quickly turned off the vehicle and took my child out. our vehicle is now stranded in the parking lot of a grocery store waiting to be towed to the same dealership. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that when abruptly braking, the vehicle would stall. the failure would also occur when decelerating to attempt a turn in either direction. the contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 50,939. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the tires would become bald prematurely. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the vehicle needed an alignment. additionally, the motor mount and the lower intake gasket was fractured, causing an oil filter housing leak in the lower intake gasket. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 13,000. *tr

Prior to 9/6/2012, engine light came on for what the dealer said no reason. then on 9/6/2012, van broke and would not start. it appeared as if stuck in all gears and i was told this was an electrical problem. there is a recall on this type/year of van for electrical problems, recall #11v139000;however, no recall shows up for my van vin #. i don't feel this vehicle is safe. the dealer has had my vehicle for a week now along with another one same make and model/year that they are having the same issue. there is a definite problem with this model vehicle. my vehicle is still not repaired or exact problem diagnosed. yet, they expect me to drive it again when i get it back. these electrical issues need to be further evaluated. yes my van was in a parking lot but that was lucky. please look into this further. the dealer don't even understand the problem on these 2 grand caravans per our last conversation we had today. *tr
