Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 Dodge Durango

As i was turning left into a community the steering wheel locked up while the vehicle was still in drive. i immediately put the emergency lights on. i put my foot on the brake for safety while the vehicle was still in drive. i lifted my foot from the brake and the car remained still. i pressed the gas pedal and the car remained still. i then placed my foot on the brake again and it was stiff. when i pressed the gas the vehicle wouldn't move while still in drive. i placed my foot back on the brake and put the vehicle in park. i pressed the engine button and the vehicle engine came on. i turned the emergency lights off, put the vehicle in drive and continued my destination. i have a video, but it exceeds the upload size for this site.

I had just exited an uphill ramp after coming off the highway from about 65 mph to 35 mph. after entering the ramp i had to stop at a red light. when it was time to turn right, the gas would not accelerate the car and the steering wheel had locked up. i had to restart the vehicle in order to proceed with my route. this is the sixth time that this has occurred while the vehicle has been either in motion or turned on in the process of driving. *tr

My vehicle began having this issue in 2015. my vehicle has a long crank and sometimes does not turn over. it will also turn over, then sputter out after running for 20-30 seconds. in 2015, i began to have the issue with the vehicle not turning on/not turning over. i had the vehicle towed dealer and the tipm module was replaced. the vehicle intermittently had the issue turning over, but when i took it to the dealership, i was told that the issue could not be replicated. in 2016, my vehicle shut off on me while i was driving on the freeway. the hazard lights would not work, the vehicle would not turn on, and the gears would not change to facilitate a tow. upon opening the hood of the vehicle, it appeared as though there was a malfunction with the alternator and fuses (of which i have video). i had my vehicle towed to the dealer and was called by a service advisor the next day. i was told that my win module had to be replaced, which i paid for. in addition, my battery had died, and i paid to replace that. i told the dealership i had video of the alternator and fuses malfunctioning and they stated they did not need the video as the computer diagnosis pointed to an issue with the win module. several months later, i began to have the issue with the vehicle not turning over. i requested a tow and the tow truck driver suggested i use the actual key instead of the push button ignition, which i have been doing. i took the vehicle in again in october, as the vehicle again began to have the long crank issue and would intermittently not start. i was told there was a recall on my alternator, but a replacement was not available. the dealership replaced my alternator, but informed me that it still would not be the improved/recall part. i have taken the vehicle back in three (3) more times for the same issue and every time, i am told that the vehicle required a software update.

Driving on a major highway in nj on 7/21/16 , all the car warning lights went on randomly and unexpectedly, windshield wipers went on on their own, radio shut off, all power was lost and car shut down almost immediately with limited or no braking or steering power and the car would not turn on any longer. i tried to make it safely to the side of the road (left shoulder was the closest) with big trucks and fast moving cars going by. had it towed to an auto body shop which took 2 days to diagnose the problem which they deemed a failure of the main board which caused the alternator to fail which caused the battery to seize and fail as well. the costs of repair i had to pay to fix the issue on my 4 year old car with 92k miles on it was approx $1,500. the symptoms and diagnosis were almost identical to the p60 recall issued by chrylser but when i inquired with chrysler about getting my vehicle covered under the recall and reimbursed for the costs of repair, they claimed that the recall did not apply to my car bc it is 180 amp vs 160 amp (?) but it is very obvious and clear to me that what happened to my car was exactly the same as the p60 recall. not to mention it was a very dangerous situation that i encountered with my car stopping in the middle of a busy highway. it could have been tragic had i not been able to navigate it well. chrysler is basically refusing to extend the recall to my vin # and not reimbursing my repair costs.

The engine regularly will not start when i push the button. it stalls over and over. sometimes leaving us stranded. this has been happening since at least 2016 and i have had all recalls repaired. the matter has never resolved! now i have been informed that the initial recall replacement part was faulty and dodge currently does not have a fix.

The alternator in my durango failed suddenly. we luckily had just arrived at my daughter's day car when the car shut off on its own and we noticed smoke. when we got out to check under the hood, the alternator was smoking! i had to have the durango towed to my dealership as there was no power to the durango at all. the dealership attempted to start the vehicle, and could not start the car using a jumper box, or by jumping it with another vehicle. the alternator had completely drained the battery. we were told a few days later that they were attempting to locate an alternator as it was back ordered, and it could be up to 6 weeks or more before they could get one. when we inquired as to why, we were told there was a recall on the alternator for many chrysler and dodge vehicles and that even though our durango falls in the specific years, it was not part of the recall. when they finally called to let us know the durango was ready to be picked up, we drove maybe a half mile down the road and the battery light came on. we returned it immediately back to the dealership. a couple of days later, they informed us that because of the alternator failure, the engine control module was bad and needed to be replaced. now, the dealership is telling us that the ecm is no longer functioning properly because of the issues with the alternator and that we will not be able to drive the vehicle without it. they contacted dodge to inform them of the faulty alternator that caused the ecm failure and dodge told them, too bad.

Dash lights started flashing car shut off, charged battery, alternator started smoking, replaced alternator, replaced battery, battery is still draining.

Recently the starter has failed 2 days after the recalls have been updated at the dealership relating to the alternator and the fuel pump relay. the suv only has 24,271 miles on it. the vechicle was stationary when it failed

Alternator failed and needed to be replaced along with battery. please see recall p60 (nhtsa action # pe14022) for similar recall for this vehicle. mine was not included in this recall but, recall might need to be expanded for my vin. car without warning would not start. completely dead even electrical. had to be towed to dealer. car has less than 30,000 miles, less than 4 years old and well maintained.

My issues began last november with the lift gate. while driving through my neighborhood, the lift gate decided to open. alarmed, i stopped quickly and closed the lift gate. after i arrived home it would not open again. this continued for a week. the latch, interior button, and key fob would not open it. i scheduled an appointment and it magically started working fine just 2 days prior to the appoinment. the second issue we experienced came shortly after. the car would shut down after using the remote start after a few seconds. i found that the engine light was illuminated and re-tightened the gas cap. the light did not shut off, so i decided to take it very easy and monitor the vehicle for the rest of the day. the light eventually turned off. a week later and it is back on again. not sure what is going on as everything appears to be fine. my wife drove my son to basketball practice and said she witnessed the heater turn on all by itself (after having been shut completely off). she turned it off and didn't give it much thought until it did it again. it continued to do this the entire drive to practice. it seems like this vehicle is possesed and i think this is just the tip of the iceburg. hopefully, something dangerous will not happen with some other system.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver as the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving on the highway the car's engine shut down. i placed the car in neutral and restarted the engine with no difficulty. days later the car was parked and would not start. the engine turned normally but it seems like the fuel is not reaching the engine. it almost seems like a flooded engine. i researched it online and it seems to be an known issue with this car. the tipm (totally intergrated power module) seems to be the issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge durango. while driving approximately 40 mph, the engine stalled but the vehicle was still coasting. the contact maneuvered to the emergency lane and shut the vehicle off. the contact was able to restart the vehicle after multiple attempts. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. the contact previously received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v115000 (electrical system); however, the part to repair the defective component was unavailable. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 53,000.

For the past week our vehicle has been having trouble turning on some times the engine is going but the vehicle is not on. today my husband was driving down the freeway going 65-70 mph when the engine turned completely off with no warning he was on the fast lane so he had to safely go to the right lane to a safe place before the vehicle lost anymore speed and cause an major accident. he tried turning it on and did with trouble and was able to move it out of the freeway. i called the dealership and they are stating it will take 1- 12 months to get the part for the recall for a permanent fix or we would have to pay for a temp. fix. what can we do?

First incident: i drove about 80 miles out of town. once i made it to my destination i returned to my truck to find out that the doors wouldn't unlock. i was able to take the key out of the remote to open the door. my truck wouldn't start. it was towed to the nearest dodge dealer. i found out that the alternator had a recall and i was experiencing a known problem. i had to purchase a new battery and they replaced the alternator. i drove 5 minutes away from the dealership and my truck started to shut down on the highway. the sensor lights started coming on for the battery, breaks, etc. and the windshield wipers came on. after about a minute later my truck completely shut down. it is back at the dealership and i'm waiting for solution. *tr

On october 2,2012 i purchased a dodge durango with less than 100 miles.. i have always kept up with scheduled maintenance. i'm still searching for all my paperwork.. i found paperwork where the check engine light was on at 81,552 -02/21/15--12/31/15--10/14/17--10/14/17---10/17/17--04/02/18.. i have spent over $3,000 dollars to repair the check engine light, now im told that this vehicle that i have paid approximately over $40,000 not including all the repairs will not be fixed and perhaps i need to trade it in for another vehicle.. i am extremely outraged with this company and feel i have been ripped off. this vehicle had and has a lot of recalls all which i have kept up on and still im not able to enjoy my vehicle..i dont feel safe driving this vehicle anymore.. engine shut down and even after all the money invested im still having problems..i have all the documents relating to this engine problem. i would appreciate your assistance in this matter.. thank you

Our dodge durango 2012 was purchased in january 2015 from rick keefer dodge chrysler jeep ram in yulee, florida. two weeks later the engine light lights up and the engine is sputtering. returned the car to dealer whom repaired vehicle and said it was the oxygen sensor and replaced. again the engine light came on and the engine ran rough. returned the car to dealer whom repaired and said they replaced the converter. soon again the engine light came on. found fuel cap 'popped off' a few times, engine light goes out then on again. returned to dealer whom replaced fuel cap. there was also an oil leak fixed. again the engine light came on and off and the engine would run rough. smoke would pour out the tailpipe, engine sputtering, drove back from mountains. returned car to dealer. they replaced powertrain control module and oxygen sensor (again). and again, late june 2015, engine light comes on and engine sputtering. dealer takes car. dealer tells us they are going to 'go through it' and drive vehicle entire time. we receive rental car. dealer calls after week and said vehicle is ready for pickup but they are awaiting a converter and are going to replace oxygen sensor also. vehicle mileage logged; vehicle was never 'driven'. rental car time was used up. returned car to dealer when part was in. dealer replaced converter but not o2 sensor?? they said it didn't need it. drove car about 10 miles and got out. a very strong smell of burning plastic is coming from car. dealer not returning call. will be returning to dealer monday july20, 2015. still driving with strong plastic burn smell. lifted hood. wiring harness above heater line and converter(manifold) is burning. entire right side of engine is unbearable hot. silver metal box in front of fuse panel is so hot it burns to the touch. car reads normal temps? most problems on blog occur in hot summer months. coincidence?

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge durango. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system); however, the recall remedy was not effective. the contact stated that while driving into a parking space, the engine warning light illuminated and an abnormal noise emitted from the engine. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 31,800.

I bought my 2012 dodge durango 3 weeks and it is not starting properly. i used the keyless remote entry and starter but the car will not start or sounds like the starter is stuck. i have to turn off the car and try again. it will normally take 4-5 tries just to get the car started and it depends if it will continue to run. i am not happy with this and noticed multiple people have the same problems. *tr

My 2012 dodge durango at approximate 45000 miles began to have problems starting. it will turn over and stall multiple times before starting. it will also turn the starter continually with out starting at all. also it has had one incident to date of stalling while driving on highway. i was traveling at 65 miles per hour on turnpike when the car stalled for no known reason and i lost use of the gas pedal. after pulling to the side of highway i had to turn key off and restart to continue. *tr

The car hesitates to turn on and the battery has been changed, the fuel pump remains running when the car is turned off. *tr

Pulling out of our driveway accelerated the car died.pushed it back into the driveway where it now sits .cannot let my wife drive a car that i got for her as a present. it does start but i found out that the fuel relay on this car is subject to failure. chrysler jeep dodge has to replace the whole tipm (fuse box ) because all the relays are made by the same company, omron. they proposed a patch for this fix not acceptable .the tipm has to be sealed from moisture and dielectric grease applied and reliable relays not by omron http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/channel-2-investigates-possessed-cars-and-their-da/nkcq3/ .http://verticalvisions.com/tipm_solutions.php

In my 2012 dodge durango it was determined that there is a problem with the total integrated power module which is affecting the way the engine starts and gets fuel to the fuel pump. the repair cost is $1213.71. it is my understanding that there are hundreds of documented cases regarding this issue in the chrysler line and nothing has been done to correct the problem. it is unfortunate that chrysler is awaiting a tragedy to take place before they do what is right for the customer and fix the problem that has been reported. i understand that a class-action lawsuit has been filed to address this issue. i just want to go on record in the event that something detrimental happens to me or my family because of this recognized and publicly documented part failure. *tr

October 15, 2014 i was driving my 2012 dodge durango crew to work. while driving my engine completely failed without warning, causing me to drift into a concrete retaining wall. my car immediately went to the body shop and was inspected by my geico insurance. the damage totaled $5500, $500 of which was my deductible. unfortunately, a part needed to repair the body was unavailable, so i was told i would need to drive the car for an estimated 3 months until the part was available from dodge. i was clearly uncomfortable driving the car because i knew it malfunctioned. i took the car directly from the body shop to my local dodge dealership. please note ***geico insurance deemed the car "safe to drive" and refused to give me a rental. i took the durango to the dealership and they kept it for 24 hours and dismissed me telling me nothing was wrong with the car. neither my husband nor i were satisfied because in my 17 years of driving i have never been in a car accident and knew something was defective. since then, i have started the car a handful of times, and it will immediately shut down. i just received the safety recall number r09/nhtsa 14v-115. this safety recall relates exactly to what happened to my durango. i have small children that i drive with in this car, refuse to get on any highway with it for fear of it shutting down at 70 mph, and chrysler refuses to correct the issue. i have proof of the $5500 in repairs, i have proof of the $500 i spent on my deductible, i have proof that i took it took a dodge dealership, and i have proof that my car insurance rate has dramatically increased because of this claim. i'm stuck with an unsafe vehicle, no one accepting blame, increased insurance rate, $500 less in my bank account, and a car that in good conscience i can't re-sell. i would greatly appreciate any direction to get this injustice finally solved. sincere thanks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge durango. while driving approximately 75 mph, the engine stalled and was unable to restart. the dealer stated that the total integrated control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 51,000.

Car was having trouble starting for a few weeks. then once started, was sputtering, then car completely stopped working in the middle of the road. took to dealer and were told we had a faulty tipm. *tr

I went outside to start my car and it would not start it would just keep turning over but never crank eventually stopping. i then would attempt to start it again and the car would try to turn over then crank shake very badly then shut off. on the third attempt it would finally start and stay running. while running or idling engine would run rough vibrating/shaking. this happened multiple times throughout 2' weeks. i could remote start it without any problem but when it came to push to start it always had a problem. i called to set up a service appointment and it was two weeks later when i finally had an appointment. when it was finally time for the appointment the car had not did this in 3-4 days. hasn't done it since. service department could not determine what it was. nothing was done. 4 days after the appointment and having 2 recalls fixed ( one of which was brake booster that they had me holding on for 3 months only did they fix it when i took my car in for the water pump, and pulley. i was told the same only 2-3 parts were coming in each month. if there is a recall get it fixed in a timely fashion not on your own time see are peoples lives!)and some computer systems reprogrammed and water pump and idler pulley were replaced the cel came on it was the weekend and service department was closed. we took it to the local auto parts store to have it diagnosed the code had something to do with the fuel system. a day later before the service department had reopened the light went off and has not came back on since. i see others with similar problems and see that there is an open investigation on this. please issue a recall so this can be fixed on all cars affected before someone is hurt. we spend all this money on cars that are supposed to be safe then please make them safe or fix the wrongs so nothing will happen. *tr

2012 dodge durango crew with a v6. engine died while driving down the highway. i lost power steering and power brakes, but managed to get out of traffic and let it coast to the shoulder. the engine would crank, but immediately die. after a few attempts, the engine began running smoothly. since then, it will occasionally not start (the starter turns over, but the engine will not run). no codes are displaying when hooked to a computer. a mechanic told me it was the tipm and i would have to take it to a dealer. after looking online, i found many other complaints for the same problem. engine seems to have a better start record if i turn the key on and wait 2 seconds before starting vs immediately trying to crank the car as soon as i insert the key. remote start rarely works now. my main concern is the engine dying while my wife is driving in heavy traffic (she is the primary driver). to me, this is a much more pressing issue than the current recalls. *tr

I was driving approx. 45 per hour, when the vehicle seemed to just shut off in stages, i was able to pull into a parking lot however it did not want to start for a few minutes. when i hit the push button, it would not start.also it has since been turning over, but not starting. this has been an intermittent problem, and has done this under all conditions including when it has been sitting, and after it has been driven. *tr

I have been experiencing issues with vehicle not starting with both the inside push button, and the remote start. it has lost power while driving twice, however i was able to maintain control of the vehicle. yesterday however, it lost power, i still had control of the vehicle while it was shutting down, then it "powered" back up, during which there was about three seconds in which i had no control over the vehicle. i simply lost all control.i believe that the vehicle may be experiencing problems related to the fuel pump relay, possibly the tpim, alternator, or a combination of all three. i am taking vehicle in monday to have two recalls done for brake booster, and vanity light wiring issue. at that time they are going to do a diagnostic on it to see what the issue is. *tr

On several occasions my 2012 dodge durango would acted like it was having a hard time turning over when i would start it. one time all of my auxiliary lights lit up and then the entire suv cut off. after i had my oil changed 09/08/14 my 2012 dodge durango started having even more issues with starting up . it would take me anywhere from 3-10 times to get it started. i heard a sizzling sound under the suv after i had parked it and got home. the next morning the entire suv was dead. my neighbor was able to jump start it, so i went and purchased a brand new battery. it still had issues starting, but after several attempts it would finally turn over. it even completely cut off on me while i was sitting at a stop light. last night i heard the same sizzling sound somewhere underneath my durango and this morning it was completely dead again. this time it wouldn't even turn on even after giving it a jump. obviously it's not just me. this situation is so unfair because right now my car doesn't work at all and the dealership is acting as if they have no idea what i'm talking about. if i was able to 'easily' figure out there is an obvious issue that we are all having just by doing a simple google search, you would think the 'experts' responsible for selling me my car and working on it would know too. individuals and big companies who take advantage of moral correct people always end up losing in the end. i hope they do the responsible thing and recall the faulty tipm associated with all of our vehicles with no charge to us. *tr

i have had many instances when the vehicle would not start. it cranks over fine but will not fire. i have to shut the ignition off, and then it starts fine when i retry it. i received a recall notice ( r09 / nhtsa 14v-115 ) but the dealer tells me that the repair parts are not yet available. i am worried that i may experience a problem while i am on the highway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired at the tuttle click toftin chrysler dodge jeep ram dealer for taking a long time to crank. after unknown repairs were performed, the vehicle stalled while driving at various speeds. on one occasion, while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the contact stated that the failure occurred frequently and, in order to restart the vehicle, the gear shifter had to be placed in neutral or park. the contact restarted the vehicle and it began to pull to the right, veered off the road, and crashed into a bridge wall. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was not filed and there were no injuries. the shield over the wheel well detached, and the front passenger side tire, spoiler, and rim were damaged due to the crash. the contact took the vehicle back to the tuttle click toftin chrysler dodge jeep ram dealer, but it was not repaired due to the repairs being at the contact's expense. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and authorized the dealer to provide a second repair; however, it was not verified if the repair would be free of charge. the vehicle was not repaired a second time as of yet. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 124,000.

On several occasions upon pulling out in to traffic the vehicle either stopped accelerating or would not accelerate at all. this has also happened on a few occasions attempting to pass another vehicle. upon pulling out to pass the vehicle would not accelerate. this is a very unsafe problem that has caused my family to nearly get t-boned after pulling out into traffic. other owners seem to have similar symptoms which eventually get traced back to a faulty cylinder head. regardless of how many times the vehicles is sent in for service nothing is done about it until the check engine light shows a trouble code. chrysler has been aware of this problem since the middle of 2012 but has refused to issue a recall. *tr

Initially in early july, 2014 my 2012 dodge durango developed a computer failure causing the battery to eventually drain, loss of engine power and ability to maintain or accelerate. repair was made after the vehicle was towed to the local dodge dealer, manfredi dodge, staten island n.y , and subsequently the battery repaired and the computer replaced. shortly after the repair was completed the passenger airbag failure light would intermittently illuminate and the vehicle occasionally would not start. another trip to the dealer and the passenger seat airbag sensor was reported faulty and the vehicle tipm sensor needed replacement or repair. conferral with the dealer suggested that the tipm sensor be replaced rather than repaired to assure longevity of the repair and overall satisfaction. vehicle is a lemon! *tr

When trying to start the vehicle using the pushbutton, the vehicle will start trying to turn over but never start. on some occasions when vehicle is trying to turn over, the vehicle will start shaking violently like the engine is about to come off. i have caught the whole scenario on video. it was every now and then in the beginning, but happening more and more as it goes on. hopefully there will be a recall to fix this problem soon. *tr

I have a 2012 dodge durange rt. when parked at a gas station, tried to turn engine on with push start switch and engine does not start. when pushing start switch again it makes the sound like the engine is trying to turn over but does nothing. in order to get the engine to stop from making the turn over noise i have to move from park to in gear. then i receive the "ignition or accessory on" message. in order to get the message clear i have to turn off vehicle without pressing the brake. this puts the engine into the off mode and i have to start the process to get the car to start all over again. this has happened multiple occasions and i have video to show the defect. i have done research and read this issue with many people saying it is the tipm defect. also, when using my right blinker instead of the front blinker working my fog lights flash. for the vehicle to not start or stall is a big safety concern and liability. *tr

Push start button, car gurgles, spits and sputters. told to try to drive vehicle because they need a code. put car into gear instantly died. now at dealership, could not replicate the problem one month ago, has had it for two days before it died on them. ordering a new tipm after we found online the same issue with multiple chrysler/dodge vehicles! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge durango. while driving 40 mph or higher, the vehicle turned off when the brake pedal was depressed. in addition, all the electrical systems disengaged. there were no warning indicators illuminated. when the vehicle was restarted, it resumed normal operation. the failures occurred intermittently. the contact called premier chrysler (located at 7301 artesia blvd, puena park, ca 90621, 714-528-5337), but they were unable to determine the cause of the failures. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and opened a case, which had not been resolved. the approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

Twice in early february, 2014, the engine (v-6) stopped running and the cel popped up. the first time i was cruising at 50 mph and the cel came on and the rpm went to zero, but as i coasted to the side of the road the engine restarted by itself at about 40 mph, so it was off for less than 10-15 seconds. the second time, i was backing out of a parking space. after moving about 6 feet the engine died and the tach went to zero and the cel came on. i turned everything off and restarted the engine and continued with my errands. in both instances the engine was at operating temperature and the fuel tank had at least 10 gallons. the dealer checked the car but found no codes to identify this problem. *tr

I have had my vehicle for a little less than two years. and my radiator has had a hole in it. and i have several major mechanical issues that are not a part of regular scheduled maintenance. *tr
