Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2011 Dodge Durango

I was on my way to work today when i noticed a burning smell and then the battery light came on. due to heavy traffic i couldn't pull to the side. i got farther down the road and heard a loud whining noise. when i arrived at work i contacted the local dodge dealership to speak with the service department about this incident. i was told that it sounds like the alternator but that my vehicle was not covered in the recent recall since i have the 180amp alternator. the recall was only for the 160 amp alternators. i was shocked since my vehicle only has 61,000 miles on it. researching this problem online i found numerous complaints from people having the same identical problem with the 180amp alternator (with the same make model and year) that caused the recall of the 160amp alternators. i have contacted dodge to see if they would stand by their product and do the right thing concerning this. once again they have failed me. consumers are reporting an average of $1400 to have the alternator replaced with no recall or warranty. i have 4 pictures of my soot covered alternator ( i am a firefighter i know what electrical soot looks and smells like). this is very concerning to think i could lose my durango could catch fire, loose power and stall in traffic, cause an accident or have my wife stranded on the side of the road due to this.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge durango. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v530000 (electrical system); however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge durango. while driving approximately 40 mph, a warning sensor light illuminated indicating that the battery was faulty and the vehicle shut off. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the totally integrated power module was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was then towed to the dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 44,000.

Several days before this incident my 2011 dodge durango started to have problems starting. it would try to start and never turn over and would take me several tries to finally get it started. i discovered online that there is a recall for the tipm fuel pump relay and that this could cause problems with the vehicle starting or even stalling while driving. i took my dodge into the dealership and they completed the recall and informed me that in doing so the vehicle now started fine leading me to believe the tipm was the problem and was now fixed. i drove for two days without any issue. then last night on my way home, with all my family in the vehicle the vehicle shut off while i was driving right in the middle of the rode. my lights and dash disolay were still working but my vehicle was no longer on. i put the vehicle in park and switched the ignition back to start mode and attempted to start it. after several try's of it attempting to start it just wouldn't turn over. i then tried to put the vehicle in neutral to push it to the side of the road and was unable to even do that. my vehicle was stuck in the middle of the road with no way to move it!!! after 30 minutes and several more attempts it finally turned over and was able to drive it home.

While driving, the car will abruptly speed up and slow down without any pressure or change in movement on the gas pedal. this has happened numerous times since about early 2012. i had a repair done on the car by the dealership as part of my warranty now these problems have made a reappearance. along side sudden speed changes without me touching anything, i have had two previous incidents of the car (while driving!) turning on all error indicators (check engine light, high beam, hazard lights, tire pressure etc) and wiper blades simultaneously. these were very scary incidents, too scared to drive to the dealership i returned to my house (went to drop my son off to get a hair cut) and called the dealership in which my vehicle was towed the next day. i have also had problems with the fob technology in the keyless start of the car where i would put my purse in the back seat of the car, close the door and all doors lock and will not unlock, then i have to once again call the dealership and wait for them to assist me. one of the main reason i bought this car is because i was assured keys locked in the car would never happen, however i have had it happen to me more than all my other cars in the past. now i have a small child with me and along side these recent reoccurrence of serious issues with my car and big recall by fca, no longer do i feel safe driving.

I had smelled something in my car for a while and could not figure out what it was. about 15 mins into my trip, my eyes started to burn and tear, and my nose felt like it was on fire. but i got it subsided. another 15 mins later i looked over at my passenger side window and realized my car was smoking and it was coming from my sun visor. i had to wait to get to the shoulder of the road as i was in the i-pass lane and had to get past a cement wall before getting my car safely away from other traffic. i stopped my car, and called 911. state trooper showed up, and as he was walking to his car to get a fire extinguisher, flames started. the car was turned off at this time, but the smoke started as i was driving. after the state trooper used the extinguisher, it was still smoking so he called in the fire department. they then ripped the liner down so they could spray the area with water. once my husband arrived he then disconnected the car battery to make it safe to move the vehicle. we had the vehicle towed to the dealer where the recall for the sun visor was performed. we are now waiting to hear back from chrysler to see what our next step is. i have a doctor appointment scheduled for wednesday, june 24th to verify that everything is okay. inhaling smoke and the fumes is why i am doing this. this is the first appointment i could get with my doctor.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, all the electrical function of the vehicle failed. the vehicle came to a completed stop and failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the alternator failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 63,000.

We where traveling on interstate from our girls softball game when we started smelling burning wires then gauges started acting funny and it just shut off almost lost steering and braking, i got it to the side of the road but with 3 ft still in the interstate, we pulled girls out and put them on a20ft bank that was behind a guardrail, while i looked to see the problem, i'm a shade tree mechanic so i started looking and see smoke coming from alternator,it was as hot a the exhaust, we had a friend tow it to the house, i call dealer they said their was a recall for the same thing that mine did but it was for the 160 amp alternator and i had the 180 amp, this is very dangerous and needs to be investigated to make sure all model that are affected are covered, i have replaced the alternator myself but if there is something else cause this it needs to be recalled and fixed, before a crash or possible a fire!

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge durango. while driving approximately 25 mph, the battery warning light illuminated and there was an abnormal sound from the front of the vehicle. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the mechanic stated that the alternator failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system); however, the part was unavailable to perform the repair. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

My husband and i were driving home in the heavy rain. when we got home and parked we noticed a burning smell coming from the car (2011 dodge durango citadel). we lifted the hood to investigate where the smell was coming from and the alternator caught fire right before our eyes! since we were home and in our driveway we were able to put the fire out with our water hose almost immediately. i think the heavy rain kept it from catching fire while we were on the road! we took the car to the dealership and contacted chrysler who told us our vin number was not part of the alternator recall and we had to pay for a new alternator out of pocket. i've never heard of a 4 year old alternator catching fire!!! very frustrating as this is a dangerous issue and could have caused a deadly accident had this happened on the open road. also suspicious that they have an alternator recall with the same issues we reported but our vin number is not included! be careful if you have this car!

My 2011 dodge durango crew says key no detected when i attempt to start the vehicle. i thought it was the battery in the key fob because the vehicle stated low key battery and took the fob to battery's plus. they tested the key fob and stated the battery was fine and didn't need to be replaced. also the drivers side head and brake lights go out.

While driving on a major road the car started giving me seat belt light alarm, wipers going on and off, rear parking system warning coming on and then the car just shut off while driving down the road. we were stranded in the middle of a four lane street which was very unsafe. i had to have the car towed to the dealer and was notified that the alternator and battery would need to be replaced. after doing some research i found out that there has been a recall for the same year durango as mine but is not covered because the recall was for 160 amp alternator and mine is 180 amp. *tr

I filed a complaint a week ago under nhtsa id number 10706397. my car is at the dodge dealership for a week now waiting on an alternator. the alternator arrived today and was bad out of the box. the alternator was locked up. i was told it would now be at least 2 more days before it is repaired. it seems to me like there are alot of problems with the 180v alternators like there were with the 160v. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge durango. while driving approximately 30 mph, the battery warning light illuminated, the vehicle lost power, and the alternator burned. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing and the alternator, pcm module, and wire harness were replaced. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2011 dodge durango. the contact received nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the battery warning light illuminated and smoke was emitting from under the hood of the vehicle. after shutting the vehicle off, it failed to restart. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 108,000.

While driving the electrical system went hay wire, a/c turned off, wipers turned on, lights flickered on and off, and the vehicle died. there was also a smell of something burning from under the hood. i replaced the battery with a new one, vehicle turned on for a while but later died again, seems there is a problem with the alternator, it's not charging. *tr

There was an electrical fire inside the cabin of the vehicle from within the headliner, directly above the drivers head, while the vehicle was in motion. the driver was forced to pull off to the side of the road as the cabin filled with smoke due to vision and respiratory distress. there was also additional damage to the exterior of the vehicle on the roof, as the fire burned long and hot enough to cause an unknown amount of structural and cosmetic damage to the roof. the fire department was also called to the scene during the incident to insure the fire was completely extinguished. we initially had our vehicle at a local dodge dealership on 02/23/15 to have multiple manufacturer recalls repaired. one of which was due to a potential fire hazard from the vanity/sun visor wiring in the headliner (chrysler recall p36). that recall work was completed, but we began to experience electrical issues with equipment that obtained power and ground (same electrical circuit and fuse) from this same circuit. interior lights would flash and dim, and then ultimately ceased to function, then our steering wheel mounted controls stopped functioning entirely. we returned the vehicle to the dealership on 3/23/15 after talking with the dealership that previous week. they explained that a "pinched wire" from within the headliner had caused an issue in the circuit. however, they insisted that this pinched wire did not cause the steering wheel controls to stop functioning (which made the steering wheel control module inoperable due to electrical short), even though they shared the same wiring. we were able to retrieve our vehicle after additional repairs were completed on 3/27/15. the car was driven one time on 3/28/15, and then on 3/29/15 the fire started from within the cabin. *tr

The headliner next to the map lights cought on fire. my wife had parked it and smelled smoke. after she backed it out of the garage flames started up and a fire extinguisher was used. the fire department came and put water on it to make sure it was out.

I've had my durango back to the dealer several times for the stalling issue. they allege that all repairs were completed in late november. i then went out of town on business for two months. i came back in late january, and the vehicle continued to stall on me while driving. they said the warranty work was done on the fuel pump relay in november. when i took it back in february, they replaced the computer and the keys because they said that the vehicle was shutting down because the computer didn't recognize that the key was in the vehicle and it shut down to prevent the vehicle from being stolen. on february 26th, it stalled while driving again. i left a voice mail for the dealership with no return phone call. on march 1st, the vehicle stalled while driving again. the vehicle is now back in the dealership. *tr

While driving at 70mph on a flat road (81 south in virginia) in the rain, the instrument cluster and gps went dead. the dials all went down to zero, the computer read-out in the center cluster went black, and the gps went black. at the same time, the vehicle lost power (and speed) but did not stall. after only a few seconds the dials started working again, the computer read-out in the center cluster came back on, and the gps turned back on. also, the power came back and i regained my speed. the power outage cleared my trip odometer readings and cleared to zero and my gps saved settings, such as home and address book, were cleared. i did not apply the brakes and there was no crash. there have been sporadic losses of power since and my instrument dials flicker, however they have not gone out totally like they did january 23rd. days before the incident, i had taken my vehicle to a local dodge dealership for recall work on the fuel pump. *tr

Driving through town, every warning light came on and wipers starting going uncontrollably. rpm starting diving to 0 and then back up to appropriate rpm for speed. other dials and nav/media screen also starting flashing. tones and lights kept flashing on and off and i immediately proceeded the few miles down the street to drop it off at the dodge dealership. vehicle was up to date on all service and recalls, except the fuel pump recall which we were told we were in line for based on parts and capacity issues. i spent $1300 to replace the tipm to fix 37 out of the 38 codes, and then another $1300 for a new headlight power module (for the last code) which shorted out and, per the mechanic, shorted out the original tipm (since they are in series with no protection between). the tipm houses all of these power modules internally, so one bad short on a subcomponent can ruin your entire tipm. the recall on the fuel pump power module adds an external component for this subsystem to protect it from these tipm failures, but does not address the major tipm safety issue! from researching other owners' experiences i was lucky the entire vehicle didn't shut down on me while driving. this is a major safety issue! i can't believe that i had to pay for these costly repairs, and all this does is replace these flawed components with the same flawed components again. i have to get rid of this car and soak up a huge financial loss to do so because this car is a ticking time bomb and i can't allow my family to ride around in it safely. *tr

I did not have a specific incident yet, however i have had three recalls on my vehicle and the parts have apparently "been on order" since june. i keep getting duplicate notices when i have tried to get them taken care of at the dealer but they can not get the necessary parts needed to fix my vehicle before there is a serious incident because of this! i also had to pay to fix a fuse on my vehicle when it seems that one of the three recalls is for the same exact thing. i should get my deductible back of $100 for that repair on march 11, 2014. *tr

I have received 3 recalls notifications and only one its taken care off iaw dealer - ferman dodge in sr54, tampa fl. i received a p60, p45 and p50 or p54 don't have the recall doc with me. the dealer is stalling on getting the parts according to them. but, i bet its a paying customer that comes with same problem and the parts i bet it will appear very quick. on 12.25.2014, i was going at 45 mph and suddenly and the speed slowed down and had to pull to the side, turn off the car and start it again, a verify scary moment with family in the car. its been now 2 months since i mentioned to them the car is suffering of long cranks. have to play with ignition to get it to start. the car only have 51+k miles and should not have this happen. need to get this issue resolved or i will keep pushing to the top to get my car fixed. *tr

The power liftgate opened then promptly fails and collapses with no resistance or warning on the occupant. the incident has re-occurred overtime since the initial problem was identified and caused minor injury to related party. power lift gate will make caution noise on the way up but when reaching pinnacle and should stop, proceeds to slam down with full weight and force. *tr

While driving heard low moaning sound, 5 minutes later (still driving) battery light came on. i decided to take vehicle to auto parts store because it was late afternoon (~7:45pm) to see if my need was a battery. i asked technician to come and see if it was my battery or alternator, as i opened vehicle door to pop the hood, the suv was filled with smoke. the techs scurried to open the hood and waived smoke in attempt to remove the battery cable to disconnect power. i was rushing to get child out of car, because smoke was bellowing from underneath the hood. after technician removed the power cable from the stud under the hood, the fire and smoke from the alternator slowed and eventually went out. i called insurance company and had vehicle towed to dealer. had i parked the vehicle in the garage for the night and sought support the following morning, i was informed that my 2011 dodge durango could have potentially caught fire in my garage, because power was continually being supplied to the alternator (over powering it). this is a serious, potential fatal system failure and needs immediate attention! dealer confirmed the failed alternator and is charging me $855 dollars, and required prompting to engage discussion on possible recall. dealer claimed no recall has been formalized. due to my disbelief that dodge was unaware of this problem and persistence in questioning other potential customer complaints, the dealer began to advise that this was a previously known problem with "chrysler" that is being fixed by refurbishing alternators and selling them back to the dealer for $500. dealer also stated the i could request repayment for my services once a formal recall disclosure was submitted to consumers. i am furious to see that is in fact a formal recall; nhtsa campaign number 14v634000. *tr

Car will not start, car not in motion when issue occurs, after the initial failed start multiple attempts to start the car takes place sometimes successful after the 2nd attempt. on 12/5 an ins. claim was made to have vehicle towed to the dealership after multiple failed start. the dealership checked car and confirmed the issue was due to part recall p54/nhtsa 14v-530. the dealership states temporary part costs 1100.00 since there isn't a remedy part available. dealership is looking into assisting with costs however why should i have to pay for a temporary part that is the same part that is on the vehicle and still have to wait for the remedy part to be available in order to correct the issue. the repairs should be completed free of charge by chrysler due to a known issue. fyi... the vehicle is still at the dealership awaiting for repairs to take place. *tr

I tried for 7 months to get the brake recall done on my truck. the awd did not work as it should during a snow storm.. then the recall was recieved and none of the dealers wanted to repair the recall. they kept telling me they hadnt received the parts. then there was a fuel type recall, a recall that the engine could shut off and some electrical issue that could cause a fire.. again i couldnt get any of these repaired. then on the night before thanksgiving 2014 my heat went. on friday 11/28/14 i tried 3 chrysler dealer ships to get the heat fixed and schedule time for the recall. one dealership told me i was at the bottom of the list because i didnt purchase the truck from them. i ended up trading in the truck for a nissan pathfinder on that day. and almost a month later i received a bill from a chrysler dealer ship who had finally completed the recall work expecting 165.00 from me. i am so financially ruined from this.

I could not get any of the recalls fixed! 2 dodge dealerships in my area would only look and not correct my brake issue. one dealership told me i was at the bottom of the list because i did not purchase my durango there!
