We have classified the 139 complaints from 2005 Dodge Durango about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
The vehicle stalls out at low speeds. so when you are at a stop light or slow down to turn or are in a parking lot, it stalls. when this happens, you can't steer because that only works with the car running. this started right after the 3 year warranty was over and has continued through today. they also didn't fix the recall item and i have fuel spills every time i set the nozzle on automatic and it is supposed to shut off. it does not shut off because the gauge is defective. now i have a spot under the fuel fill that was eaten away by gas and it is now rusty. *tr
Our 2005 dodge durango with 5.7 liter hemi has stalled on numerous occasions since purchase. usually stalls during at slow speeds, or while turning. this has caused several near accidents. had taken to dealer, after $1,000 of tune ups, etc. no improvement, still stalls. very unsafe! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact noticed that the engine warning indicator would illuminate on the instrument panel. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the spark plugs and coil wires. immediately after the repair, the engine completely failed. she took the vehicle back to the dealer and they stated that the engine needed to be replaced. the engine was replaced, but the failure recurred. she took the vehicle back to the dealer on several occasions and they replaced the catalytic converter, several spark plugs, and coil wires. as of january 30, 2009, all of the remedies have been insufficient in correcting the failures. the manufacturer did not assist. the failure mileage was 45,000 and current mileage was 68,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving under 10 mph, the vehicle stalled, but was able to be restarted minutes later. the dealer performed a diagnostic and was unable to detect any failures. the manufacturer informed the contact that he would have to pay for future diagnostics because the vehicle exceeded the 36,000 mile factory warranty. the current mileage was 38,000 and failure mileage was 16,000.
Two days in a row now my 2005 dodge durango has stalled while on the highway. i did some research and found several complaints on the issue. i am appalled that nothing is being done about this. this is a very serious problem and could be fatal. *tr
Stalls while driving since we bought it,fan motor for heat needs same part replaced ever 3 month to year, loud ticking, bad engine, only 86,000 miles. *tr
Customer relations department: refer: manifold gasket ro# 426595 - stock number 2885312 odometer reading at time of service 39,305 miles notice of the defects in my (2005 dodge durango slt 4d sport utility 4.7 bright silver), vin #[xxx] the problems (s) that i have currently with my vehicle are as follow: manifold gasket cracked terrible "ticking" coming from the engine and transmission the car is constantly cutting off and stalling out the car struggling just to stay on the car now has a very little power the check engine light comes on and goes off after a day or two leaking transmission fluid the manifold gasket cracking began all existing problems that i'm currently having with my vehicle. after intestine research i have found that this kind of a problem should only occur in older vehicles with over 75 thousand miles or more; not in a new model vehicle such as my 2005 dodge durango with less than 35 thousand miles on it. the defects in my vehicle remain even after the dealers repeated repair attempts. they gave the car back to me claiming the problems were fixed, but guess what?? the vehicle is still doing the same thing but worse. my car isn't fit for any type of road trips due to engine and transmission problem. i bought a brand new vehicle. i'm in fear every time i drive my car. i'm very dissatisfied that a company as large as carmax / daimler chrysler would take advantage of single mother with a child in this day in time when gas is $5.00 a gallon, times are to hard and i can not afford these types of problems with my vehicle. i have read on internet, that daimler chrysler/carmax, will do everything it can to avoid doing the right thing, also i read that chrysler pressures dealers to keep warranty costs to a minimum, even for known problems and defects. chrysler will do everything it can to avoid covering common problems under warranty whenever possible by blaming consumers; information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
2005 dodge durango slt, 5.7l v8 stalls when braking. this has happened on several occasions since may 2007. the dealer has cleaned the throttle body, replaced the battery as they said it was loosing voltage and flushed the fuel injection system. as we drove it out of the dealership after it was "fixed" it did the same thing, yet they cannot duplicate the problem when they have it. *tr
I purchased my dodge durango limited new in 2005. i had no problems until approx. 1 year in to ownership. when the vehicle is placed in reverse after sitting overnight or while at work it has a several second hesitation. after taking it to the dealership (3) times they finally found a tsb to replace the transmission filter which they say they did. the problem seemed to get a little better. now though (1500 miles later) my durango is hesitating in reverse and forward. the dealership can't replicate the problem ( never have ) and don't know what to do now. i have also now had (2) instances of the engine shutting off at low speeds. the dealership also can not replicate this and don't know what to do. my durango has spent almost 2 weeks total in the shop with these issues. i guess i will need to put a sign on my rear windshield that reads "stay back vehicle engine dies". *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the vehicle stalled due to low idling when the contact made a hard turn. the failure occurred when the vehicle was first started. the vehicle received a software upgrade, but the failure persists. the failure is similar to what is stated in nhtsa action number pe05027. the current and failure mileages were 60,000. updated 03-04-08 *bf
On three separate occasions, my durango has stalled while driving with no warning and for no apparent reason. after it happened the first time i took it to the dealership and they said that they couldn't duplicate the problem so could do nothing. most recently it happened twice in the same day on my wife. at this point i am beginning to search for another vehicle because i am concerned for the safety of my three children. please do something about this before someone gets hurt or killed!!! *tr
My 2005 dodge durango limited, hemi v8, 50k miles has stalled 4 times at highway speeds. (65-80) and twice in the last week. when this happens the suv has a loss of power/steering/brakes and it is quite a challenge to coax the suv to the side of the road and avoid damage. this last time the suv was unable to stop in a safe distance and went off in the median. it also lost automatic headlights so i was trying to move the suv off the road at night with no lights to guide on a busy section of i-90 in ohio. the durango has also stalled 2 times backing out of my driveway in the last 3-6 months. i have had this looked at by my local dealer and they could not find any problems. the durango is up to date on all tsb's and recalls. i will be bringing the durango back to the shop again tomorrow to have it check out again. *tr

I have 2005 durango bought new. i have had it shut off on me going slow, making turns and going down the interstate. i have had to put the vehicle in neutral while going down the interstate turn the key off and start the vehicle up while moving. i have had it into two different dodge dealerships once for 2 days the next for two weeks. they did not fix this issue but found many other things that need fixed. my wife will not drive the truck because of the kids. she's afraid of it. it just sits in front of the house. *tr
Dodge durango 4.7 liter v8 stalls for no apparent reason. no cell or trouble codes, just complete loss of power. changed fuel stations, and performed tune-up. i fear an accident may occur. *tr
Vehicle was started the morning of 7/27/2007 after sitting approx. 24 hrs. drove less than 3 miles at 35-45 mph when vehicle stalled as left turn was being made at approx. 22 mph (lost all power, no warning lights etc..). had to put vehicle in neutral and restart (no warning codes appeared upon restarting). on 8/6 vehicle was started in the afternoon and driven less than 5 miles @ approx. 40mph when suddenly instrument cluster lights started to come on, a/c shut down and engine started running rough. vehicle was taken to dealership on 8/7 and after clearing codes dealer "could not identify" any problems. dealer stated no flash sw updates available. vehicle had 2 other instances prior to this in q207 where all lights came on in instrument cluster and engine ran rough. dealer could not identify what codes meant, but performed instrument cluster replacement (subject of a dcx recall) and vehicle ran well for about 6 weeks prior to the stalling incident on 7/27. *jb
2005 dodge durango (4.7 l v8) stalls in an unexpected manner while driving. stalls have occured while driving on at least 5 occasions. stalls have occurred in normal street traffic and on the highway. had a dodge dealership look at the vehicle in may 2007. vehicle has stalled twice since the dealership looked at it. the vehicle most recently stalled today on i-90 (june 10, 2007).
I purchased a 2005 dodge durango brand new,and since i had this vehicle it has been given me problems. there were recalls on this vehicle. the vehicle idled very hard, and it shut off when it idled hard, while sitting at a traffic light or when turning to go around a ramp. when shutting off the wheel locked, and i could not control the car. recently, the care shut off on the new jersey turnpike and a tractor trailer truck was behind me. luckily, i was in the outer lane and managed to steer the car to the shoulder before the truck could hit me and my family. this was very dangerous. last incident happened on une 10, 2007. every time i took the car to the dealer they determined there was no problem. *ak
2005 durango engine dies when changing from reverse to drive after backing out of parking space. also dies when accelerating from a slow roll such as an uncontrolled intersection. i have been involved in 5 near miss incidents in the last 18 months. dealer has done a tune-up and test drive and has told me there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. are people going to have to die before something is done about this? *tr
My 2005 dodge durango has stalled without warning several times since purchase two years ago. this has happened while moving and the steering locks up. the dealership has examined the vehicle several times and found "nothing" to be wrong with it. there are several other durango owners with this problem. this needs to be recalled and fixed before someone gets hurt or killed (if they haven't already). *tr
2/27/07 purchases: 2/27/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/06/07 repaired: egr valve, 3/09/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/12/07 repaired: ignition coil. 4/06/07 problem: engine light/vehicle cut off/ serviced: 4/17/07 repaired: short out cam and crankshaft sensor. due to vehicle having rough idle , needle jumping/vehicle shaking, vehicle shut down at stop lights. (5/01/07) returned vehicle to service due to shutting down when backing up/rough idle. (5/17/07) vehicle shut down on the expressway in front of a semi-truck, i didn't know if had shut down until the wheel became difficult to control. i coasted up the exit ramp and the vehicle start right up. dealership requested to take the vehicle to another service center for repairs. (5/18/07) took vehicle a dodge dealership, in which ,they stated that the vehicle has intermittent problems which were hard to detect. diagnoses of the problem would be difficult. also, stated this was the second vehicle in their service department with the same problems. to no avail they found nothing.*ak
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving 35 mph under normal driving conditions, the vehicle suddenly shut off. the contact was able to restart the vehicle in neutral. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure. the current and failure mileages were 50,000. the consumer provided repair invoice. the dealer stated replaced door lock actuator. udpated 06/26/07 *tr
While driving my 2005 durango, when i hit the brake, the engine will cut off, no warning lights come on, steering tightens, i have to put it back into park for it to start again. this has been going on for 30,000 miles and 18 months, it has been to 4 different dealers, and no one can find the problem. one dealer said it needed a tune up that was at 24,000 miles, so we paid $900.00 for that and new brakes. that wasn't the problem. one month ago, while pulling into a parking lot, the vehicle shut off and i hit a parked car because the steering wheel tightened and brakes locked up. luckily no one was injured. this has happened at least 2 dozen times. *tr
Engine overheated. ,we have replaced the thermostat the water pump, the clutch fan. and temperature gauge,. however, it still was overheating the transmission seemed to take forever to take gear. the truck only had 56,966. *ak

While moving forward at 5 mph. cold engine and engine stalled. started when tried 4 hours later.*ak
My 2005 dodge durango stalls while driving & the steering wheel will lock in position. the first time this happened (approx aug, 2006), i was turning into a shopping center & almost hit a car coming out of the shopping center b/c my truck stalled & the steering wheel locked & would not allow me to turn in any direction anymore! the second time this happened (just this week, april 2007), i had just backed out of a parking spot, put it in drive & started to go forward while turning (both times this happened i was turning to the right) ... i moved forward slightly & then it stalled out ... again, the steering wheel locked up. when the vehicle stalls, everything shuts off ... all electronics, everything ... and the steering wheel will lock in place. the local dealership wants me to pay $100! just to tell me what is wrong, if they can find anything on the trucks computer! i purchased the truck in feb, 2006 in pittsburgh, pa. i drove it down to key west & had a problem with an oil sensor during the trip. my biggest concern is the fact that when it stalls, everything turns off & the steering wheel locks up. i have to hope other drivers are as cautious as i am & that my brakes don't fail on me too! *tr
Vehicle stalled in traffic while making a right hand turn. no warning just died.*ak
Clicking noise under hood, was told by dodge dealership that it had to do with the exhaust or exhaust manifold. was told at two different dealerships that it could not be repaired. according to searches, it seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. noise gets louder the more you accelerate. *tr
2005 dodge durango with the 5.7l hemi stalls (completely shuts off) when turning left or right. this has happened numerous times and is a serious safety issue. my family and i have been stranded in the middle of 55 mph highways as well as numerous intersections while making a left or right turn. *jb

Since i purchased in 2006, vehicle has intermittently stopped running when turning (left or right) . i can start it again, but it will continue to die several times when stopped or turning. it may happen several times in one month, or nothing at all for 6 or 10 months, but continues to do i--4 years now. dealer can't find the cause, independent mechanics can't find the cause. when its doing this and i'm stopped (in drive) rpm's will bounce from 2 to 0 a bunch, then it will die. am also having surges when the vehicle is stopped. and it stalls when i drive through a puddle. not a lot of water... your average puddle that every other car goes through fine. power steering goes out and the car stalls... sometimes it dies, sometimes it makes it back to life. my vehicle was doing all of this at under 20,000 miles and continues to do so. this problem has been reported for years now. this is a dangerous problem. when my car is having one of its "days", i don't drive it. i'm not risking myself or others. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. when the vehicle reaches 60 mph, it feels as if it will flip over and the wheels are uncontrollable. the contact stated that the vehicle does not need to be aligned; however, they pull the vehicle in the opposite direction. the vehicle also clunks and clinks during acceleration and the engine light remains illuminated. the sensors were changed and the engine light dimmed; however, it illuminated again the following day and still remains lit. the vehicle has new brakes and when the brake pedal is depressed, the vehicle jumps before it stops. the contact must turn the steering wheel in order to avoid a crash. nhtsa campaign id number's 05v460000 (power train:automatic transmission) and 07v092000 (electrical system: instrument panel) were referenced. the current mileage was 82,000 and failure mileage was 62,000.
At low speeds, engine stalls out. usually when combined with sharp turns or angle changes. this is very dangerous... it leaves with with sudden power steering and brake loss in mid-turn situations!! i asked my local dealer about it and they looked at it with no conclusions. it has happened to me many times now. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving 15 mph, the engine stalled and then shut off completely. there was a loss of power steering and brake power. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the dealer reprogrammed the computer software, but the failure recurred. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 27,000 and current mileage was 43,000.
Turning while driving, steady driving, coming to a full stop at a stop light or sign. vehicle shuts down completely, no power for steering or braking. vehicle has been taken to the dealer several times and no problems has been found. this is very dangerous, i have almost been involved in several accidents because of this problem, please help. *jb
While driving a 2005 dodge durango owned by my husband, richard flippin, the vehicle spontaneously lost power and the steering locked. i had a small amount of give and was able to maneuver the m/v slightly and straddle the driveway of a strip mall. i then put the m/v in park and restarted. had i been traveling on the highway at a high speed...with my children...i don't even want to think about it. *nm
I was driving down the road last night and about to pull in to a local place to pick up my daughter. my engine stalled, headlights went out and i coasted in to the place. i restarted my vehicle and all seemed fine. i drive a 2005 dodge durango limited hemi. i am very worried about this happening again. i bought my vehicle three months ago, used. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds the engine intermittently stalled without warning. the vehicle was restarted and maneuvered off the road. it was driven to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem. updated 12/26/2006 - *nm
Ongoing stalling problem with dodge 5.7l hemi in 2005 durango. see nhtsa action number ea05018. vehicle has been into dealer several times with no resolution for problem. dodge has a service bulletin for this problem and all of the fixes for the problem(mostly software upgrades) have been implemented, however the vehicle still continues to stall. problem occurs mostly when the vehicle has been initially started. issue has not caused an accident yet, but has created several close calls because it has stalled when pulling out into traffic from a stop sign. *jb
The vehicle started, but stalled before placing it in gear. restarting was attempted numerous times before the vehicle would start and remain running. this is reminiscent of past situations where the vehicle has stalled, and would not restart. these previous situations where reported under odi# 10147495 on january 9th, 2006. this stalling situation is extremely hazardous to the driver and passengers. chrysler??s response has been to re-flash the pcm. however, fault codes have not been identified. eventually, this stalling/non-restarting condition will be fatal to either my family or to someone else??s family. at which time, i will actively retrieve these nhtsa submittal as documentation of a known problem that was not addressed by the manufacturer. *nm note: previous submission under odi# 10147495 the engine has quit twice now while accelerating away from a stop. once the engine stalls, it cannot be re-started. in fact, the engine will not crank. the first time this occurred in november of 2005, the vehicle was towed back to the dealership where the pcm was re-programmed. now during the second incident, the dealership is claiming that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving at low speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was maneuvered off the road and restarted. although the problem had occurred several times, the dealer could not duplicate the problem.
Mr mullens wife was driving on a busy local street at dusk. passing through a traffic intersection the engine in her car just stalled/died/stopped running. the car was difficult to stop and turn. once the vehicle was stopped the engine restarted with the first turn of the key. she is not sure if this is related but she thinks its possible that the engine stalled when she turned the headlights on.
I have 2 2005 dodge durango's one was in a head on collision and was totaled it help save my life. so i purchased the same auto again but red, the problem with this one is that it will stall out for no reason. it will start again but it continues to do the same thing i have had it at the dealership more than 4 times for the same thing this time twice in one week and they had to keep it over the holiday weekend. you buy a new auto and expect it to be safe and run. *jb
On multiple occasions, my 2005 dodge durango limited (5.7l hemi) stalled at low speed (5-15 mph) in parking lots and at intersections. my local dodge dealership said there was nothing they can do because the problem could not be "duplicated." this occurs once every couple of weeks under the same driving conditions describe ed above. this is dangerous - especially at intersections with oncoming traffic. *nm
