We have classified the 156 complaints from 2005 Dodge Durango about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
My durango is one of hundreds possibly thousands of vehicles that has the transfer case mysteriously shifting on its own. it can be triggered by the unlock button, even the dome light. the transfer case is now shifting all the time in and out of position both when the vehicle is under operation and parked. the is dangerous and dodge claims to know nothing. i spent 10 minutes and found hundreds of chrysler vehicles with the same symptoms and no definitive answers. (google dodge durango svc 4wd light) please help. *tr
Was driving along and the "4lo" light had been flashing on and off intermittently for about 3 weeks. occasionally the "svc awd" light would flash afterwards. when the latter happened, the car would lock into 4 wheel drive from awd. but when the crash happened, the transfer case actually shifted into 4lo and the rear wheels locked up and the car spun sideways and stopped quick enough to avoid any damage or injury. no one at dodge can explain this, or fix it. *tr
While. i'm driving my suv lock up the 4 wheel light come on out of no where and then 4 low light come on i have been smelling a burning smell and don't know where it's coming from everyone whom look at it don't know what's wrong. all i know is yesterday i was on the highway and the same thing happen again with no warning even when i lock my car door i hear this funny noise. *tr
I have replaced the cylinder switch on my truck which cost me $465.00 to get a new 1 in order to crank my truck aaa repaired this for me in 2014,i've also had a leak sealed up in the coolant area all my freon was leaking out now the windows on the truck will not go down the only thing that opens is the sunroof.i had the truck put on a machine at a shop here they said it was the canbus system under the hood that is inside the computer that is causing this but my truck also has a recall on it as well,i have a white 2005 dodge durango hemi 7.5l truck vin number [xxx] yet to hear anything on the recall 07/25/2015. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I was driving my 2005 dodge durango home on the freeway going 55 mph getting off on the off ramp the transfer case shifted into 4 low which in turn locked my wheels up (top speed in 4 low is about 30 mph), this nearly caused me to roll the vehicle. when i got off the off ramp the service 4x4 light was on then went off, went 2 more blocks came back on and shifted into 4 hi. the transfer case does shift on its own even while i am not in the vehicle with my key in my hand. i have read more complaints about this transfer case issue than i can count, it is not only the 2005 models doing this it has been happening well into the first generation durango. something has to be done about this before some one is seriously injured or killed. i was lucky this time i am afraid to take my wife and kids with me any where in it due to this problem. please do something about this before some one is injured or killed. *tr
This vehicle clicks into 4 wheel drive randomly and won't come out. the vehicle was being driven at 55mph when it kicked out of gear and quit. it sounded as if the transfer case dropped out of the vehicle and driver felt as if going to go through the front windshield. the 4x4 kicks in and out, and won't steer. driving is difficult and vehicle barely moves. when called chrysler they don't know what it is and suggest trying multiple different things but nothing is guaranteed, and will cost thousands of dollars to fix more than the cost of the vehicle. while vehicle is not turned on but key is in hand you can hear the actuating motor clicking in and out. very difficult to drive and when vehicle stalls won't start back up. a safety hazard on the highway, and apparently there are numerous complaints of the same kind. this needs to be addressed by chrysler. *tr
I was on my home from work going about 40mph. i got to a redlight before i stopped the suv jerked. and when i press the gas peddle to go , the suv would not move. i then tried to put it in another gear it was on but it still would not move. the police officer that pushed it out of the street said that it was the transmission. also you can just be driving the suv would just stop. this is very dangerous, and can cause accidents. on one occasion i had to nearly run off of the road to keep from having and accident. i think that chrysler llc should replace my 2005 dodge durango. being that i'm a single grandparent and now i have no transportation. so i can't get to work to provide for my granddaughter. *tr
Vehicle switches in & out of 4wd on its own while driving, or puts itself into neutral on the 4wd, also hear something engaging when unlocking doors with remote when parked or remote won't work at all to unlock doors. mechanic found lots of other mechanics working on same issue on a forum he subscribes too and i found tons of durango & some pickup owners complaining of and trying to get the same issue fixed. i have had several other minor electrical issues in my durango for the past two years so i am convinced this is an electrical issue. *tr
The four wheel drive will engage and disengage with engine off and key out and will also engage while driving. *tr
On any number of occasions (regardless of outside temperature or whether or not the vehicle was at normal operating temperature) while the vehicle is at a slow speed (in forward or reverse) the engine will stall without warning. with the loss of engine power comes the normal loss of power steering and power brakes. it appears to be most frequent when pulling into or out of a parking lot, stop sign, etc. the slow speeds are not inherently dangerous, except for the fact that stalling while in traffic and suddenly reducing speed or stopping puts myself and other motorist in jeopardy. when backing into a parking space, the loss of steering and braking capabilities create a risk of minor damage to other parked cars and could put a pedestrian at risk while being distracted and not being able to stop or steer as easily. there are no obvious sounds or engine or transmission noises or vibrations or anything to give warning that this could occur. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph and when making a turn, the steering wheel seized. in addition, the transmission made a clicking noise. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 mph, the four wheel drive activated independently and the vehicle independently shifted between gears. the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the contact also stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart. in addition, the a/c independently operated, the headlights and the instrument panel lights failed intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
The central timer module (ctm) or body computer as some call it went bad causing the 4 wheel drive to engage or disengage without warning. when the 4 wheel drive engages while driving it makes it nearly impossible to make tight turns and at low speeds you are unable to turn at all. the part also causes the wipers to randomly engage, the door locks to randomly engage or disengage, and more. *tr
Driving down the highway and the 4x4 engages without warning. the vehicle begins to jump every 1/4 mile or so, slowed speeds to 25, continued to jump until i pulled to a complete stop and parked. problem continued to occur every time i drove even if i never went any faster than 25mph. i took the vehicle to where i had a warranty and after them keeping my durango for over a month and a half they said there were metal shavings in compartment for the transfer case and the transfer case was replaced under the warranty, however there is a transfer case shift motor that is not covered because they say it is outside of the transfer case. they said even if i pay the hundreds of dollars to replace this part, the problem will continue to happen. i want the problem fixed and i would like to be reimbursed because i've seen thousands of people complaining of this problem all over the internet. i refuse to pay for something dodge should be responsible for because it is a defect of their vehicle. *tr
First sign of problem, when pulling into driveway or parking spot doing either a left or right hand turn, my 2005 dodge durango would not turn even after applying more gas than usual, my truck actually stopped as if the brakes were engaged. then, while driving i noticed my 4lo light coming on intermittently, also when i either lock or unlock my truck with the remote i hear a clicking sound underneath the truck like something is engaging. you can also hear this switch sound under the car even when the car is off. seems like the transfer case motor is switching on its own regardless of the vehicle being on or off. also some sort of electrical problems when it rains... *tr
2005 durango has been stalling at various times for the past 3 weeks. the whole car turns off. lights....everything. mechanic, transmission specialist and chrysler dealership have no idea why. it has only happened at low speeds either going in reverse or going forward. it usually happens when you start driving the car but it has happened after driving it for a little while. it can also go for days without happening. the only code is a the number 6 cylinder misfire but everyone agrees that one cylinder misfiring would not result in the car going dead. the throttle body has been serviced and software has been updated and it continues to stall. we have spent $600 on repairs and car rentals and i still have no car. chrysler dealer has had the car for almost two weeks. *tr
I have a 2005 dodge durango 4x4 that is suddenly kicking in on its own, vehicle parked key out still clicking and turning on and off. this happens enough some nights that in the morning the battery is dead. i read the forums and thousands of people are saying the same thing and no real answer. many complaints filed to chrysler with no answer. kicks into 4 wheel drive while in motion at 65 mph on the highway. *tr
Has occurred multiple times. initially my 05 durango would stall when pulling into parking spaces. has progressed to normal driving conditions at around 35 mph while turning the engine will shut off. occasionally the rpms will jump up and down too. engine idles around 500rpm. when this first occurred there were no warning lights illuminated. i just don't feel like this is a safe vehicle at this point in time and based off of the other reports, dodge should investigate and repair at no cost. *tr
The truck even when unlocking the doors or driving will engage into 4 wheel dr without activating anything many internet post have stated this problem i guess dodge won't do anything until something happens and they get sued. *tr
My 2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi has had a vast amount of stalling. i was going to pick my son up and the throttle light and the engine light came on. the throttle light was blinking. i would just be driving and it would die. this is a serious matter and if dodge is not made accountable someone could be hurt. i had my durango towed to a dodge dealer and was told it was the egr valve. so i had that replaced along with new spark plugs and wires. it was fine for a week then it did the exact same thing on a very busy road. it would start then die. so i had it towed a second time to the dodge dealer. this time i was told it had pulled 12 codes but they were not active but just stored codes. the dealer could not diagnose my durango. i was told they also checked the wiring and could not find anything. so i paid for the diagnostic and was told it never acted up on the mechanic. so again a week later it did the same thing and so we replaced the electronic throttle control. it ran ok for a week and now it is doing the exact same thing. it stalled on the interstate and my husband was nearly hit. can someone please look into this with dodge before someone gets hurt. the dealer cannot find what is wrong with my truck .please someone help figure this out i saw all of the complaints on line for this exact same problem.and also with mine this happened on more than one occasion. *tr
My car started having problems with the 4 wheel drive. it would start jerking at slow speed whole turning (usually while parking). shortly after that the 4lo light started flashing. the car would also make a sound while parked like something was trying to switch on, this would happen usually after using the keyless entry remote. i've done quite a bit of research and this seems to be a problem a lot of dodge durango owners have. i have since had the 4wd disconnected and have not had the problem but that's not a permanent fix. *tr
Was driving down the road and the 4x4 engaged without the switch being touched. it has done this numerous times now even when it is parked in the driveway and the vehicle is off. i can here it engaging into 4 wheel drive. even when you hit the unlock button on the key you can hear the transfer case engage into 4 wheel drive. when this happens as you are driving down the down road it makes it very difficult to turn. i have read many other complaints on here for the same issue. this is going to end up causing an accident as it can shift into 4lo while going down the road. *tr
I was pulling into a parking space and the car started skipping and jumping, vehicle was hard to steer and it also hesitated to go, turning was very difficult. the 4 lock light was flashing on all by itself and the knob has been on awd i only rarely switch the vehicle to 4 lock in the winter time. this makes about a dozen times it has happened to this vehicle. twice in one day is very scary. i am very afraid of what might happen if i am going a higher speed at the time it decides to mess up. i have talked to a mechanic and he has never heard of the issue but says it could be very dangerous if it would happen while driving a higher rate of speed. i have search on line by typing '05 dodge durango 4 lock by itself' and there are a lot of people having the same issue. also with no luck figuring the problem, one person had replaced the transfer case 3 times and it was only a temporary fix. *tr
My durango shift into 4 wheel hi and 4 wheel lo by itself while driving and while sitting. this cause my truck while driving to jerk and it locks the wheels up. this situation causes difficulty to turn also. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle resumed normally when restarted but the failure recurred five times. on a separate occasion, the transmission shifted into fwd independently while traveling between 35-40 mph. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the failure mileage was 110,000. the vin was unavailable.
While operating the vehicle the service 4wd light came on. at some point after that the transfer case shifted into 4hi lock.i scanned the obdii and had no codes present. also scanned the 4wd selector switch and it showed the switch was operational, but the transfer case shift motor was not shifting. dropped the vehicle off at an independent transmission shop one week later and it sat for a few hours and when they went to road test it no warning lights and it was now in awd. again the repair shop did an obd scan and came up with no codes.if these vehicles were to shift into four wheel drive (low or high range ) at highway speeds of 65 mph i feel major driveline damage and or failure will result, which could lead to serious injury or death. *tr
2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi. while driving down the road the service 4wd warning light started blinking and the 4wd started to activate on its own. as the vehicle sits when activating the door locks with the remote the 4wd actuates on its own. *tr
When vehicle is off, switching noise from the transfer case switching motor on the awd dodge durango moving on its own from awd to 4lock to 4lo occurs. src 4wd light may come on but then clears when engine is turned off. the switching is not controlled by the normal operational control that would be done by drive. i am concerned about shorting wiring in vehicle causing a fire due to shorting. when unlocking the doors with the key flob, the switching action may start which should not be related to the changing of awd, 4lock & 4lo. *tr
The first time it happened, the transfer case went into neutral, on it's own, while driving on a divided highway, with no shoulder. it kind of created a traffic jam. long story short. a friend towed me home. i reset the transfer case per the instruction manual, and it went back into gear. still do not know why it went into neutral in the first place. now, when you open the doors, the transfer case motor operates like crazy, for up to 30 seconds, and some times longer. i got on line and have found out that is a problem experienced by many durango awd owners. i bought it used and the previous owners claimed that it never did it before. also, when filling the tank up, the filler neck will "purge" fuel out onto the ground and your feet. this is listed as a dealer recall, and mine was looks to have been done, but the problem is still there. *tr
4wd engages without switch being thrown. 4wd engages and disengages at will. so far just annoying, but could cause crash if it engages on turn at medium speed. *tr
Same issue as reported below: date investigation opened: nov 18, 2010 date investigation closed: open nhtsa action number: aq10001 component(s): unknown or other all products associated with this investigation details 43 associated documents manufacturer: chrysler group llc , ford motor company , general motors llc summary: the agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle. nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding. the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns. these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market. this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways. this aq is opened. *tr
Date investigation opened: nov 02, 2005 date investigation closed: aug 29, 2007 nhtsa action number: ea05018 component(s): power train all products associated with this investigation details 26 associated documents manufacturer: chrysler group llc summary: analysis of the complaint, field report and warranty data shows that the majority of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles appear to be related to the engine calibration concerns that daimlerchrysler addressed with service bulletins releasing revised pcm software. analysis of the complaints and odi's survey of owners of vehicles that received engine management software updates under tsb #18-013-05 show that these stalling incidents have the following characteristics: - they occur at low speeds, often during parking lot or driveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal; and - the operator is almost always able to immediately restart the vehicle. when compared with other safety defect investigations and recalls of conditions that result in stalling during low-speed deceleration with immediate engine restart possible, the failure rate in the subject vehicles is low. analyses of complaint and warranty data also show a declining trend. accordingly, this investigation is closed. the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted. see document file for additional information regarding this resume. *tr
I have a transmission problem that can't be defined or pin-pointed. it has occurred over the last year numerous times. no one can seem to fix. the transmission drops out into neutral at high speeds or drops into 4wd low at moderate speeds, lately the transfer case will make noise when i unlock the truck and when i go to start it the transmission grinds and drops into 4wd low!!! if it wasn't for my awareness of the sounds of the truck and ready to make a safe maneuver, there could have been a serious crash. this is a common problem with these trucks! look on the internet. it happens randomly and without warning. no mechanic can fix it yet! they say change the transfer case out $2000, but it doesn't always fix it... this is a severe hazard and i will not let anyone drive my truck but me.. i found if you shut down the car and put it in neutral and push the towing neutral button it sometimes kicks it back in to the right setting. you will see it scroll through 4wd low .. 4wd high and service 4wd on the dash. then go to normal.. this is a very serious defect!!! the feds need to go after dodge to find the issue and issue a recall!!!! i will sue dodge for everything if any accident occurs from this. i should sue them now just for my expense, loss of work time and anxiety!!!! they need to take responsibility for this and stop "looking the other way"! please someone at the federal level needs to take the lead and force dodge to do what's right! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the four wheel drive system engaged independently and caused the steering wheel to become difficult to turn. the contact restarted the vehicle and it functioned properly until the following day. the contact was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 112,000.
There is a problem with my car switching into 4lo. when i unlock my car it makes a clicking noise under the car like it is switching from awd to 4lo. also, my 4lo light flashes on my dash and it sounds like it is trying to switch even though it is left in awd. *tr
At various times for no particular reason, the vehicle switches in and out of 4-wheel high and low. the issue began with it off, there was a audible mechanical shifting coming from what appeared to be the transfer case. after that the issue began getting worse and worse, several mechanics have looked at it and were unable to identify what the issue was. recently, the vehicle has begun shifting into neutral at 45 mph+, at that point a loud metal grinding sound begins and does not stop until the vehicle is slowed to < 25 mph when the vehicle slams into gear, which is usually 4 wheel low. the vehicle will no longer shift into any chosen mode, it chooses its own mode at random. at times if the vehicle is stuck in 4 wheel low putting it into neutral and then into reverse can help to switch the vehicle back into awd or at lease 4 wheel high. *tr
The vehicle will automatically engage itself into 4-wheel drive mode. the incidents usually happen at low speeds. although, the incident can, has, and will happen at higher speeds. when it occurs at low speeds, the vehicle will accelerate slowly and refuse to turn. when the incident happens at higher speeds, the vehicle will seemingly lock the tires and if not handled correctly the driver can lose complete control of the suv. this particular defect seems to be a common issue among dodge durango 2nd generation owners. many say the dodge dealerships are skeptical on what exact repair is necessary to fix the apparent safety issue. durango owners experiences with technicians show many times they reportedly point the finger at various high dollar repairs. some have had success with replacing the transfer case motor but some who have pursued this repair have again reported the same issue after the repair was completed. originally, the safety concern was extremely rare. recently, the problem has become more consistent. it is a definite safety hazard as it can cause complete loss of control of the large vehicle. *tr
Vehicle switches in and out of 4wd and 4lo without warning or indication. as read on internet, a major problem with these vehicles yet chrysler does nothing about it. potential for major accident and vehicle damage. from what i read, it is impossible to repair and is a major occurance. *tr

Transfer case tries to shift into 4lo at random (yellow 4lo light on dash flashes & can feel it trying to switch) & it also tries engaging when the key isn't in the ignition. i've read that if it engages in 4lo at a high speed it could do major damage to the power train & possibly result in an accident. i've searched in google & it appears that there are quite a few people experiencing this problem. i've had the power connector to the "transmission control module" disconnected since september 2012 so i can drive but i'm unable to switch to 4lock or 4lo if needed (svc 4wd light stays on). *tr
When i'm driving in traffic (approx 30-45 mph) or stopped at a light, my vehicle randomly shuts off. there's no indication this will happen. no lights flash or anything. the truck simply stops. i take it to mechanics and they say they can't identify the problem--but they recognize there's a problem. i'm fearful for the safety of my family in the vehicle and/or anyone we encounter when this happens. it's nearly impossible to steer the vehicle out of traffic, and the steering locks up as well. i've had the cooling system flushed, transmission replaced to no avail. is there a recall on this thing?! there sure should be! i'm sure someone has died by now due to this malfunction. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the check engine lamp illuminated and the vehicle started to shift hard. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the shift solenoid was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 110,000.
First incident happened at a low speed coming into a turn. i did some research online and found that most durango owners had luck with fuel system cleaning and/or egr valve replacements. i did both, and the vehicle ran fine up until today (2 months later). there were previous "investigations" for recall services a few years back, but they were closed out. i hope dodge decides to open an investigation again.. i do not want to be paying $200 every 2 months for fuel cleaning services. this is ridiculous. *tr
4x4 locks up when turning end result broke my transfer case. *tr
My transfer case will shift from awd to 4lo with no warning. my transfer case also shifts into 4wd, when i should be in awd. these shifts happen frequently and at any speed. *tr
Vehicle engages and disengages into four wheel drive on its own. will engage while driving at high speeds on freeway, while vehicle is off and when unlocking doors with key fob. stereo changes stations and volume adjusts on its own. have unhooked transfer case to avoid an accident. *tr
2005 dodge durango limited, 5.7l hemi v8 stalls while backing up. first time it happened the truck started right back up immediately. the second time on 11/28/11, it took 3 times to restart the vehicle. this has only happened while in reverse. apparently this is a common problem with the hemis and there is a tsb #0802404 to "reflash" the engine and update the software. the forums state that this is a fix for some vehicles, but not all. i am scared to be in this car with my kids now-what if we stall on the highway and get into a wreck? please fix this issue! our safety is my number one concern, and should be yours as well, dodge! *kb
2005 durango 4.7 v8 hemi my vehicle randomly shuts down on its own, locking the steering column, when slowing down and turning at the same time as when coasting into a parking space or coming to a stop. also, on some of these occasions, all interior electrical components seem to go out, inst panel, radio, fan/blower, etc. brought in multiple times for inspection, they say they find nothing. in last 6 months, 4wd light blinks as if its changing from awd to 4wd on its own, sometimes can hear it engaging under car when using key fob locking or unlocking, and when turning into a parking spot it feels like it changed to 4lo as its almost skipping/hopping like trying to take a turn with 4wd and rpms go way up like i'm in a low gear. many, many of the same complaints on dodge forums with many people just throwing money at it and having multiple things replaced etc, just to find out its not fixed. needs to be recalled soon. *tr
2005 dodge durango 5.7 liter hemi. on freeway, engine started "pulling" and "missing" and shut off. 75 mph freeway speed, extremely dangerous situation. had a car load of kids. was able to put car in neutral, and start the engine (doesnt start immediately). ran fine for about 50 miles afterwards. happens about every 50 miles of driving. has been going on for 6 months. gives no codes as to what it can be. cleaned throttle, worked a for about a week, then problem continued today. its getting harder to get it started once it gives out. egr replaced ($500.00), battery (200.00), spark plugs (150.00), replaced fuel pump last week (220.00 with labor)...i'm basically tired of this!!!!!!! checked dodge forum and there is a lot of people having the same problem. no accidents have occured as of yet, but whats to say someone isnt going to be killed by this happening! please, please, please look into this problem. i'm all out of ideas, as are the dodge dealers and mechanics i've dealt with. for your sake, this needs to be taken care of before the lawsuits start coming. *tr
I purchased my 2005 dodge durango, 5.7l hemi, used from a dealership. a check engine light came on and i took it in for service and they flushed my transmission fluid and said that if it did it again they would try replacing the solenoid in the transmission. after that, the engine would just shut off while driving - mostly when i was just starting out, but one time it just died (no warnings) when i was doing 70 mph down the highway! now my car is starting to buck (feels like you hit something) at @ 45 mph - not when accelerating, stepping on the gas or decelerating, but rather when staying at a steady rate of speed. i have young children, my husband works out of state, and i fear for our lives every time we drive this vehicle! it is my only form of transportation and i have a loan on it! i have read hundreds of complaints about these same type of symptoms. i want to know why dodge has not done anything about it! the federal government bailed them out before, now it's time they take responsibility and recall these cars and get them fixed before people start dieing! they are blatantly ignoring a known problem! *tr
