Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2005 Dodge Durango

Gas has started overflowing/spraying out when filling up. pump stops and seconds later it happens. the first time it happened it sprayed some fuel on one of my boys who was standing by me. thankfully, it didn't get in his eye. i first thought it was the pump but since realized its the vehicle. this seems to be fairly common issue and i have seen the two recalls on this due to the tanks inlet check valves not shutting properly. the recalls cover vehicles made through nov. 04. my durango was made dec 04 so dodge won't touch it. *tr

Gas overflows and ejects when fueling. when the auto shut-off of the gas pump nozzle triggers, a considerable amount of fuel is expelled from the filler area of the vehicle. this is a reported issue covering many makes and model years of dodge vehicles. when contacting a dodge representative, she indicated that the warranty has not been extended or does not cover my vin#. she also indicated that each call is tracked and when a certain amount of calls/problem reports are obtained, they would consider the re-evaluation of this issue. *tr

My wife and i purchased this pre-owned vehicle 10/29/2011. this happens everytime we fill the tank. the fuel handle clicks to shut of the flow of gasoline to the tank, then about a second later, the fuel begins to spew back out of the tank, draining down the exterior of the vehicle, covering the ground, and myself as i stand nearby. each time i estimate between 1/4 & 1/2 gallon of fuel is wasted. i verified with my local chrysler/dodge/jeep 5 star dealer that my vin isn't included in the limited recall from years past. this is a huge safety issue as my wife runs a home daycare and children are frequently in the durango where fumes are prevelant after the spill. *tt

I had my 2005 durango into the local dealership due to fuel shooting out of my gas tank when i filled it up with gas. i was told after diagnostic tests that it was a faulty inlet check valve and that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. i was quoted $1200 to have the tank replaced. i don't believe that i should have to pay for the tank replacement. after much online research, i see that this has been an ongoing issue on dodge/chrysler vehicles for the past several years. it is my understanding that my '05 durango vin didn't fall under the 2005 and 2009 recall, but that other vehicles were later added to the 2009 recall. this is my main source of transportation. i have two small children and feel this is safety hazard due to a manufacturing defect therefore, they should be the ones to fix it at no charge to me. thank you in advance for your prompt and immediately attention to resolve this problem. *tr

I just purchased a 2005 dodge durango. when you fill the fuel tank it overflows fuel out the filler neck spilling down the side of the vehicle and on the ground. *tr

Fuel spits back when attempting to fill tank. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel spilled from the tank during refueling. the failure recurred on multiple occasions. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the manufacturer advised that the vehicle did not qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 07v442000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage:tank assembly) the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 100,316 and the current mileage was 101,100.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated after adding gasoline to the fuel tank the fuel would spill out of the vehicle. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and advised him that he was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap). the failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

When filling with gas, fuel will spill back out of the filling tube, some times when it gets full, other times it will do it all the time. dodge has had recalls on some of these 2005 for similar issues, but for some reason ours does not fall into the range. every time will fill fuel there is gas everywhere. *tr

While filing up with gas, when the pump clicks off when it is full gas spews out of the filler neck while the gas nozzle is still in there.. apparently this is a widespread problem and a recall has been issued on 2006-2007 models but not 2005's like mine.. it would be nice to be able to fill my truck up with gas and not have it spew out all over the side of my truck and the ground.. *tr

When filling with gas fuel will come back out the filling spout and spill gas all over the car and ground, and sometimes the person filling it. dodge has had recall on some of the 2005 for the same problem but ours does not fall into their range. this seems to be a big safety concern with fuel going on me, the car, and the ground. *tr

It spits gas back at you when you fill up i just read about the recall i've only owned the car for 2 year. *js

Fuel spill over when refueling on multiple dates and multiple locations of refueling. *tr

When filling up gas tank, the tank spews gas back. i received a recall notice when it first came out in 2009. i did have my vehicle checked at that time (then i was not having problems.) the dealership said it was taken care of. now, my durango is having problems with it. the tank even spews gas when filling slowly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel escaped out of the filler tank and splashed on the contact. the contact referenced a nhtsa campaign i.d. number 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly) and called the dealer. the dealer informed the contact the vehicle was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 200,000.

Tl* the contact 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel began to spill out from the filler neck while refueling. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 92,000 and the current mileage was 93,300.

When fueling, approx. 1 to 2 quarts of gas burps out of the fuel filler tube. this occurs regardless of how fast or slow the fuel is dispensed. seems to not be venting properly. i see daimlerchrysler recall # e01 and h45 have been issued, however my manufacture dates do not fall within range. can my vin info be checked and/or are there any other options available to have this repaired by the dealer without cost? *tr

When i fill up with gasoline, if i do not stop 2 gallons shy of a fill or slow it to a trickle, it will spew about a 1/2 gallon of gasoline down the side of the vehicle. i have done an online search and found chrysler is recalling close to 25,000 2005 dodge durango vehicles as the fuel tank filler tube inlet check valve may not fully close at the end of refueling. this could allow some fuel to escape from the vehicle through the filler neck at the end of refueling. i called and my particular 2005 durango was no included in the recall while clearly having this same problem. i would like to see if dodge would expand their recall to those experiencing this exact problem. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel leaked from underneath the vehicle. the fuel cap and engine warning light also illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. the contact replaced the fuel cap, but the failure continued. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap), that may be related to the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel spilled to the ground abnormally. the manufacturer was contacted and denied assistance repairs because the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: tank assembly). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 88,000 and the current mileage was 89,000.

When adding gas to the vehicle the gas tank spits the gas out. *tt

I have seen lots of complaints about this same issue online as well as 2 open and closed investigations on this website! while driving my 2005 dodge durango it will shut off on its own, steering is impossible at this point. it use to happen a lot to me. normally it would always happen pulling in or backing out of my driveway. but i live in rural wv and we have mountains and curvy roads. once i was driving about 30-35 mph and i was on a curvy road and it stalled out on me and i about went over the mountain as i could not steer! we had the vehicle checked over and there was no warning our check engine light on. ultimately have the mechanic played the guessing game, he replaced the egr valve and that had fixed the problem. just recently it is beginning to happen again. this investigation needs to be reopened! manufacturer should be responsible. my durango has 3 very common issues with lots of other folks that should be recalled: 1. the stalling of the vehicle for no apparent reason. 2. the fuel leaking out as you are filling it was gas! they say my car is not part of the recall and will not pay to fix it. 3. 4 lock kicks in on its own as you are driving. this is very dangerous! they need to investigate and solve the problem and recall. i love my durango and i have had it for 6 years as i bought it used and i am the second owner. i would love for dodge to make this right. as i do not want to get another vehicle. *tr

There is a failure of the gasoline filler tank check valve that causes gas to spit out of the filler hose assembly during fueling. here is a video showing the issue (video is of another my 2005 dodge durango with the exact same issue): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0-_9wg6dw4 background: in march 2005 a recall was conducted to remedy fuel-spit back problems caused by stuck inlet check valves in the fuel tank filler tubes. at that time, chrysler stated that the supplier of the fuel tanks had identified an early october 2004 manufacturing change that should have eliminated the root cause of the problem. however, higher rates of complaints and warranty claims for the my 2005 durango vehicles built from 10/13/04 to 11/30/04 compared with the remaining my 2005 durango vehicles built after november 2004 indicate the spit back problem continued in the field for vehicles built from mid-october through the end of november. chrysler reported process modifications were implemented on 11/24/04 to address spit back problems and believes these process changes would have been incorporated in all vehicles built at the assembly plant as of 11/30/04. in march 2005 , chrysler initiated a safety recall of approximately 24,000 my 2005 dodge durango vehicles built from 3/1/04 to 10/12/04 (refer to recall 05v-034). in january 2009, the recall was expanded to include approximately 19,000 additional my 2005 dodge durango vehicles built from 10/13/04 through 11/30/04 (refer to recall 09v-003). according to my dealer, my my 2005 dodge durango was manufactured in march of 2005 and is having exact same issue specified in the recalls. to correct safety defect in my vehicle, the dealer has quoted me ~$1,000 to fix this issue because it is not part of the recall. *tr

Fuel spills when filling up with gas. fuel gushes outward onto myself and pavement. occurred numerous times. have resorted to not topping off tank. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated after approaching a traffic light, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the failure and informed her she needed to replace the fuel tank, the fuel pump modular and she needed a system update. the manufacturer was contacted but they will not speak with her. the case manager would not return her call. the dealer will not offer any assistance. the failure mileage was 135,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated while refueling, fuel began to spill out from the filler neck. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vin was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 63,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel was spewed from the fuel tank abnormally. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted and confirmed to the contact that the vin did not qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 97,000 and the current mileage was 98,000.

Nhtsa action number rq08005: inv. closed 9 jan 09 the spit back problem continued in the field for vehicles built from mid-october through the end of november. chrysler reported process modifications were implemented on 11/24/04 to address spit back problems and believes these process changes would have been incorporated in all vehicles built at the assembly plant as of 11/30/04. in the two plus years since the investigation was closed, the nets has received over 300 complaints pertaining to the issue that was supposedly corrected by the expanded recall. nearly all of these complaints stated that the vehicle with the problem was not included in the recall. please re-open the investigation! the investigation was closed based on a "belief" without checking the veracity of the claim made by chrysler! the spit-back problem is still a problem- chrysler knows it, otherwise they wouldn't have been so quick to make me an offer because they're concerned about the safety of my family. incidentally, my 2005 durango was manufactured in feb of 2005 making it obvious that the "process modifications" were not incorporated in all vehicles and the supplier of the fuel tanks actually did not make the stated manufacturing change. my recommendation: expand the recall to any 2005 durango experiencing the known safety issue related to the fuel spit back problem. unless of course, chrysler is leveraging risk vs. cost of an expanded recall and weighing the odds that the nets will just let this one slide. please advise. dear customer: case #: 21232269 vin: [xxx] vehicle description: dodge durango limited 4x4 sport utility 4-door parts: $729.00 labor: $260.47 total: $989.47 co-pay = $350.00 vehicle is not covered under recall because vin does not fall under recall and recalls are vin specific. sincerely, sam customer care information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *kb

When filling fuel tank fuel gurgles then spits out after the nozzle clicks off. it happens every time i fill the tank no matter what filling station. *tr

Gas splashes out on myself and the car and the ground everytime i fill up with gasoline. it has been reported and verified that in jan of '09 there was a massive recall on 2005 durangos regarding this safety hazard. i took my vehicle in to a local chrysler dealer and they charged me $75.00 to tell me there was nothing wrong with my car and that they did not have any recall notices for my year of durango. i have the complaint number from the nhtsb announcing the massive recall of these particular vehicles. when i complained again, i was told the recall did not include my vin number.this is unacceptable. a fire could start or worse yet , i could catch on fire with the amount of backsplash i receive everytime i fill the gas tank up fully. this is a serious defect on chrysler's part and it needs to be repaired immediately. at the high price of fuel i do not expect to be doused with a shower of gas, nor do other customers' parked near my car at the gas station.

Fuel overflow on fill up. updated 07/28/11*bf

When filling the gas tank gas will spill out of the filler neck onto the vehicle, ground, and person once the pump shuts off when full. confirmed by dodge dealership that the filler value in the neck is malfunctioning. researched and found recalls on certain 2005 vins and extended warranties on 2006-2008 models. my vin was not covered and dodge will not support the recall even though it is the same issue they have acknowledged on the same model year. *tr

Cannot fill up my fuel tank without getting gasoline spray. anytime the gas station pump is allowed to shut itself off it sprays fuel out. this is at every gas station i have ever gone to. the hazard of a significant fuel spill! this has been an ongoing problem. *tr

During fill-ups with gas, fuel spills out. there have been multiple recalls on the issue, but the dealer says our vin is not covered even though it falls within the dates of manufacture that the recall states. *tr

On numerous occasions when filling my gas tank the automatic shut off ( that tells you the tank is full) has not kicked in causing the tank to over flow and kick back gas spray all over me, my fiance, or the attendant at the gas station. this is not something that has happened just once, but multiple times in the 9 months i have owned this vehicle. i have checked for recalls and my vin comes back with no active recalls, i even went as far as reading in detail the nhtsa recall reports (09v003000 and 05v034000) to obtain manufacture dates to compare against my own. needless to say mine does not fit in the date range (3/1/04-11/30/04) having been manufactured in february 2005, but does infact have the same issue as the models under recall. this is something i want to have fixed but don't feel i should have to pay to do so seeing as this is an issue they knew they had and claimed to have fixed but quite obviously did not. i am tired of being afraid to fill my gas tank and getting covered in gas when i do. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel overflowed and was spewed from the filler neck. the dealer was contacted and they stated to the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.

Every time i fill my vehicle up with gas it back washes out of the filler tube. when making contact with dodge chrysler i was told my vehicle's vin # was not included in any of the past recalls. at this time dodge chrysler has offered a co-pay remedy since the vehicle is no longer under warranty. to resolve the issue i was told the vehicle needs a new gas tank and filler nozzle. is there anyway to get them to expand the vin # chart to include other vehicles that are having the same issue??

During filling gas on my 2005 dodge durango limited (5.7 l hemi), the gas has started running out or spraying out of the filling nozzle as the fuel tank becomes full. this has happened on more than 5 occasions. the manufacturer was contacted and claims my vin number is not part of the recall for a faulty fuel tank check valve, but i continually have to monitor my gas gauge as i'm filling my vehicle each time to avoid gas spewing out and onto the ground. this is a safety and environmental hazard that must be addressed. this is a similar issue on this model with select vin numbers, but for some reason, mine is not covered? *kb

When filling my tank, as soon as the gas pump shuts off, fuel spews out of the car, on to ground, and myself if standing nearby. the only way to keep this from happening is to not fill the tank all the way. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel spilled from the tank during refueling. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted and they confirmed that the vehicle did not qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v003000. (fuel system, gasoline: storage:tank assembly).the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 145,000.

To whom it may concern, i have a 2005 dodge durango 5.7l. recently after filling the fuel tank the fuel "spits back" out of the filler tube and down the side of the vehicle to the ground. i have read numerous complaints online for this exact problems on these and other chrysler group vehicles. i started a case with chrysler and took the vehicle to the dealership as they wanted. after the inspection they determined that my vehicle does not fall under a recall for the exact same problem. there is a tsb # 14-001-09 to repair this problem, but, my vehicle is not in the vin range for the repairs. i feel it is more of a safety issue and an environmental issue than an inconvenience. the dealer states that the fuel tank needs replaced at a cost of over $800 for the tank and 2.5 hours of labor. the fuel tank does not take that long to replace. is there anything that can be done to get these vehicles repaired? or should we just continue to spill raw gasoline on the ground after every fill up? if i were the only person having these issues i would take ownership of the needed repairs and fix it myself but, as we know there are thousands of vehicles with the same issue. please contact me if there is any solution to this problem. thanks. *tr
