Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2005 Dodge Durango

When filling the gas tank a large amount of gasoline spits out after the fuel nozzle clicks off. i first thought is was a defect with the fuel nozzle. but it continues to happen each time i fill up. this is very dangerous and could cause serious injury or death in the event of a fire or explosion. there are several videos on ytube which clearly show this problem. when this occurs the vehicle is stopped at the service station with the engine and ignition is off. i have researched and found the chrysler has a recall on this problem but vin is not included. the recall should include all vehicles that have this problem. pleas advise on what can be done to get chrysler to rectify this dangerous problem at their expense. thank you. this problem first occurred in november 2016 and has continued each time i fill up. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. when attempting to refuel the vehicle, fuel ejected out of the filler neck. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the fuel tank inlet check valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline) but the vin was not included. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v817000 (air bags); however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000. updated 6/8/15*cn

Every time i went to fill the gas tank it had a delay overflow . started out with about a cup of gasoline and then increased to about 3/4 of a pint and this is even when filling very slowly. i checked online and found that there had been a recall on durango's in 2005 for gas tanks overflowing because of a defective check valve. when i contacted the dealer he said that recall did not apply to my vin number?. i do not see how that can be. i have owned many cars over 40 years and never had one overfill the fuel tank and splash all over you. *tr

Having 3 major issues that can be life threatening..1) driving at any speed sometimes vehicle will completely shut off leaving me on the highway at 60mph no power steering 2) filling gas tank up no matter if i go slow will always spit lots of gas back out of the neck 3) 4x4 is engaging by itself. i can park it turn motor off and you can hear it going into 4x4 without me being in the vehicle or touching the 4x4 knob. this has cause me issue steering when it decides to go into 4x4 mode by itself. i need to know if their is current complaints about the above issues and how can i get them fix without me paying. *tr

The vehicle shuts off after you fill it up with fuel. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the inside of the vehicle had a gasoline odor after the fuel pump assembly was replaced. the contact discovered pools of gasoline on top of the fuel pump assembly. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. no repairs were performed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000. the current mileage was 71,000.

Spits back fuel after refueling. possibility of fire hazard. *tr

When refueling vehicle, fuel gushes out of fuel filler tube violently. this occurs no matter what speed fuel is pumped into tank. i see that 2 recalls affect this condition in this model year vehicle but the recalls seem to affect only a portion of vehicles for this model year. my vehicle appears to have been manufactured in april 2005. this appears to place it between the 2 groups of vehicles covered by the recall. i went to a chrysler dealer on 3-5-14 and was told that my vehicle is not covered by the recall. why aren't all vehicles affected with this problem covered. seems to be very unsafe to have a large quantity of gasoline ejected from the filler each time it is fueled. the incident date i indicated above is the date i purchased the vehicle. i have no knowledge of problems the previous owner encountered, it was owned from new by a local police department. *tr

When fueling up my vehicle at the end of the pumping procedure, gas shoots out of tank and depending on pressure it can reach my forehead. *tr

Whenever i fill up my gas tank gas pours out. i try to listen real close so it doesn't happen and then sometimes even as i am taking the pump out a bunch of gas will come back out of it. this has been going on for a very long time. i even had a gas attendant try to tell me i would have to pay for the clean up. i seen were there was a recall on this and i called the manufacturer and they told me my vehicle was not part of the recall. evidently there are other 05 dodge durangos having the same problem. *tr

Fuel overflows when you fill the tank up. gas kicks back smell gas fumes while parked some times. dealer says its not covered. but there is a recall. *tr

2 problems: 1) even though our local dealership is insistent that we don't have a recall, i can see a recall on your page about windshield wiper motors. our wipers come on every time we start the vehicle, and they work sporadically. sometimes while they're on, they won't come on at all, as mentioned in the recall information. why isn't mine covered? 2) biggest problem: several times (upwards of ten times) i have been going slow, usually making a turn, and my engine stalls. i have to turn the key off and then restart, and i'm okay again. took it to a mechanic in the last part of july/first part of august last year, and he replaced the fuel pump. it didn't occur again until december, while we were on vacation- we were slowly going up a hill and it stalled. had to turn the key off and then re-start it. it hadn't done it again until a couple days ago. it did it three times in one day, then has been doing it each day since. i'm really afraid that the durango is going to die in the middle of traffic and i'll get hit. i have four young kids, and i am panicked thinking about having to drive it with them inside, because i'm afraid that we're going to get hit and hurt. it's so scary that i'm tempted to trade it in- though i can't really afford it, we just bought this thing used last year. i'm wondering if it did this for the previous owners as well. there are complaints all over the internet about this same problem, but no fix for it. even if i could get a mechanic to tell me what it is and fix it, i'd do that, but nobody seems to know what the answer is. it's obviously a huge safety issue!! please help!! *tr

The first time it happened, the transfer case went into neutral, on it's own, while driving on a divided highway, with no shoulder. it kind of created a traffic jam. long story short. a friend towed me home. i reset the transfer case per the instruction manual, and it went back into gear. still do not know why it went into neutral in the first place. now, when you open the doors, the transfer case motor operates like crazy, for up to 30 seconds, and some times longer. i got on line and have found out that is a problem experienced by many durango awd owners. i bought it used and the previous owners claimed that it never did it before. also, when filling the tank up, the filler neck will "purge" fuel out onto the ground and your feet. this is listed as a dealer recall, and mine was looks to have been done, but the problem is still there. *tr

When filling the fuel tank up, the gas pours out and goes everywhere the car, ground, and me. *tr

We were filling the fuel tank at a gas station, after the tank was filled it sprayed fuel on my wife. i have investigated this issue online and found this recall. i will also contact dodge ,but i also have read a few instances where they are resistant to this safety issue so i decided to also report it here. *tr

This is my 2nd 2005 dodge durango that has the exact same issue as described in nhtsa campaign number: 09v003000. chrysler recall h45. when filling the tank, gas spits back at you. gasoline hits your pants, shoes, and all over the gas station pavement. this happens everytime you fill the tank. the workaround is not fill the tank all the way but that is a hit or miss issue. i call chrysler and they said they don't see this issue with my 2nd durango. i'd typically accept it but seeing how both my durangos had the exact same issue it is a little bit hard to swallow. this vehicle has had the issue for at least a year and i am ready for chrysler to fix it before there is a fire or other epa issue. thanks *tr

Every time i fill up the vehicle with fuel it sprays gasoline out all over the side of the vehicle as well as whoever is fueling it. several like model durangos from this year and close to the same year have had recalls to fix this issue. im not at all sure why my vin does not qualify for the recall but it needs to because the problem is obvious and was definitely a manufacturer error. please consider this request and take care of the issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed through the filler neck and onto the contact. the contact also mentioned that the check engine and abs warning lights illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank filler inlet check valve needed to be replaced. in addition, the dealer informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline). the failure mileage was 89,600 and the current mileage was 106,200.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that after refueling, the instrument panel erroneously displayed that the fuel tank was full.the vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline). the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred on three occasions. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 202,000. *tr

I am having an issue with the fuel tank when i am filling up the truck, when fueling, the pump handle will click off and then fuel will shoot out of the fuel tank all over the place. i have never seen or experienced this issue ever before and it is quite alarming when you gas up and end up covered in gasoline not to mention the fact i am spilling gasoline all over at the pump, i feel this is a liability because of fuel spills and the fact it could potentially start a fire. i have seen several recalls on this issue and also several reviews as to chrysler/dodge not helping to repair the problem, this is why i was told to start here with a formal complaint. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel was spilling out of the vehicle from the filler neck. the contact stated that the shut off valve was defective and would not stop when the fuel tank was filled to capacity. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. updated 01/18/13*lj updated 01/22/13

When i fill my gas tank to full or close to full, the gas leaks or sprays back around the fuel door.

When filling the tank with gasoline, the pump handle will shut down but gas spews from the filler opening on the vehicle. there is an existing recall for this problem issued in 2009; however, my particular vin is not covered under that recall even though i am having the exact same problem. perhaps a fire causing injuries is necessary to have this problem covered by chrysler. *tr

When i'm driving in traffic (approx 30-45 mph) or stopped at a light, my vehicle randomly shuts off. there's no indication this will happen. no lights flash or anything. the truck simply stops. i take it to mechanics and they say they can't identify the problem--but they recognize there's a problem. i'm fearful for the safety of my family in the vehicle and/or anyone we encounter when this happens. it's nearly impossible to steer the vehicle out of traffic, and the steering locks up as well. i've had the cooling system flushed, transmission replaced to no avail. is there a recall on this thing?! there sure should be! i'm sure someone has died by now due to this malfunction. *tr

I just purchased this vehicle used from a certified chrysler dealership. before finalizing purchase, the dealership filled the gas tank for us. the sales manager noted that he needed to clean up the side of the vehicle--that the gas pump had overflowed. 2 days later when i went to fill up the tank, i had the same issue--the gas tank overflowed. i have looked this issue up online and it seems there was a recall for only a select set of vin numbers. according to chrysler, my vehicle was not a part of the recall. clearly, my vehicle should have been included. it appears the fix to this issue is to replace the gas tank. also, it is now clear to me that the 2 small rust bubbles near the gas tank are being caused by gas overflowing every time somebody fills up the vehicle. this is a safety issue and should be fixed by the chrysler corporation. *js

I bought a used 2005 dodge durango limited on 4/3/2012. after the purchase i went to the gas station to fill it up. gas spilled out of the tank when i attempted to fill the tank. since then, this has happened two more times. i contacted chrysler and filed a complaint because this is a serious safety issue. i was told there was a recall on the gas tank filler tubes on some durangos, but that the recall was not for 2005 models. this is a fearful situation as i bought this vehicle to transport my grandchildren. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel spilled out from the filler neck. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance since the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 44,000.

Before gas nozzle clicks off. gas sprays back out the tank and goes all over person, car, and ground. after the spray of gas the nozzle will click off

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel spilled out from the filler neck while refueling. the manufacturer and dealer were notified and both stated that the vehicle was not included in any recall. the failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 118,000. updated 07/10/12*lj the consumer stated a dangerous amount of fuel sprayed out from around the fuel filler nozzle two to three feet in a conical spray pattern at every fill-up and came in contact with his skin, clothes, fuel pump and other surrounding areas on the ground creating a very serious health and fire hazard. updated 07/12/12

My 2005 dodge durango has a serious malfunction which causes excessive gasoline to spew from the vehicle during filling. this occurs at every fill up of the vehicle and is very difficult to prevent, even once i became aware of the issue. the gasoline exist the vehicle with considerable force the amount can vary but is typically equivalent to ~20 fl oz. not only is this a obvious fire/explosion risk, but is also a hazardous chemical risk as the gasoline often makes contact with clothes and skin during refueling. i notified dodge of this issue was given a case # however was notified that dodge does not consider this an issue and will not fix the issue unless it is a recall. there is a very well documented evidence from the internet to support that this is not an isolated issue and that many other durango owners are having the same issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbwgvmyy3vm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs5u63cn-ii http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/02/chrysler-fuel-spit-back-complaints-rise.html http://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen-durango/190747-gas-fill-overflow-on-my-06-durango.html http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/doc-570725 please act on this widespread issue before someone is seriously injured or poisoned. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, gasoline spewed from the filler neck without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was advised to the contact that the fuel tank would possibly need to be replaced but a diagnosis was required. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline) in 2005. the vehicle was not repaired for the recent failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 99,000. *tr...updated 04/25/13 *bf the consumer stated dealer advised the manufacturer that the vehivcle had two leaks that were causing the failure. the dealer claimed the second leak was unrelated to the first leak. the consumer has a video clip of the failure. updated 05/17/2013 *js

While filling up the gas tank, gas sprayed out once the tank hit full. i called dodge due to the fact there was a recall on this exact incident with the same year, make, and model. i was informed that my vin was not one of those that was included in the recall. but i was offered to go ahead and pay for the repair and then call them back and they would give me a chrysler address i could send a copy of the original form of payment and the detailed bill and they might reimburse me for my expense. *tr

When fueling my vehicle, the gasoline always overflows and spills out onto the ground and myself when the tank gets full. my vin # was not included in the recall and we just bought this used from a dealership. is there any way we can get this remedied at no more cost to us? *tr

When putting fuel in the gas tank, once it fill up it shoots gas out. not a little gas either, alot of gas. it's very dangerous. they had a recall on the 2006 through 2008 durangos but not the 2005. the recall was for check valve in the gas tank. this is extremely dangerous and i can't believe the wouldn't want to fix this before someone really gets hurt. *tr

While driving my vehicle, coming to a stop, or turning left at slow speeds 0-5 mph my engine stall without warning. no lights light up on the dash to indicate a problem. i have also noticed that rpms fluctuate (increase/decrease) while my foot is off the gas pedal. this is a daily occurrence. i first thought that i had bad fuel and put an fuel additive in the tank to hopefully resolve the problem. when the problem continued, i replaced the air filter, but the problem continued. i am now going to replace the egr, but i have seen that others have done so without any success in resolving the problem. based on the notices placed here and at various other web-sites for several years running, it appears that dodge does not have any procedures in place to resolve this problem. this is a health and safety issue that needs to be addressed. i purchased this vehicle for the purpose of transporting my grand kids, and lacrosse players to and from various events. if dodge does not resolve this problem, and i or someone i am transporting is injured or killed in a accident based on the above mentioned vehicle malfunction, dodge will be held accountable. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that after refueling, a large amount of fuel would continue to emit from the filler neck and onto the ground and the contact's clothing. there was a recall associated with the failure under nhtsa campaign number 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap); however the contact's vin was not included. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the fuel tank inlet check valves were being replaced. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel would spill out from the filler neck while refueling the vehicle. the failure recurred whenever the vehicle was refueled. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to have the failure diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 74,000. updated 02/06/12*bf the consumer stated fuel gushed from the filler neck every time he filled up. updated 03/05/12

After i bought my durango used, i brought it to fill up the gas tank. i filled up the tank, just before the gas pump shut off, there was about 1/2 gallon of gas that shot out the gas filler hose at me- i thought it was something wrong with the fuel pump at the gas station and told the gas station attendant. about one month ago i filled my fuel tank again, and again the fuel literally shot out of the filler spout at me. i thought this time it wasn't a coincidence since it was at a different gas station. i started searching and found there are many durango owners with this same dangerous issue. apparently, dodge has agreed to fix 2006-2008 vehicles, but the 2005's aren't covered. this is rediculous, does someone's car have to catch on fire for dodge to take responsibility? *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while fueling, the contact noticed fuel spill back out of the vehicle from the filler neck. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. there were two recalls under nhtsa campaign id numbers 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap) and 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly), that may be related to the failure. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in either recall. the vin was not available. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated fuel spilled out of the filler neck upon refueling. the failure recurred whenever fuel was added. the vehicle was not to the dealer to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). the failure mileage was 68,340. updated 02/06/12*bf updated 02/29/12

When i fill up the gas on my 2005 dodge durango the gas comes spraying out the filler hose all over the side of the truck and at one time the gas sprayed on my clothing also. this could be a serious issue if i happened to smoke, but it's a good thing that i don't. i contacted the dealer and they indicated that my truck is not on the list of vehicles that are included in the repair. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel would spill out from the filler neck and the gas pump would inadvertently shut off. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 117,000.

Fuel gushes out of the gas tank when filling up with gas. about one or two seconds after the fuel nozzle automatically shuts off because the tank is full, fuel will gush out of the tank for about another one to two seconds. i believe this is a fire hazard and a general safety concern. the dodge dealer tells me it's a stuck roll over valve and not under waranty or covered in a recall. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while adding fuel to the vehicle, the fuel spilled out of the filler neck whenever the fuel tank was full. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that fuel was spilled from the fuel tank during refueling. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted and they confirmed to the contact that the vin did not qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number:05v034000 ( fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileages were was 77,550.

Upon fueling my vehicle up on a regular basis; the fuel pump will shut off at time of fill up, but then a backlash of fuel occurs to be backing up in the fuel pipe and spraying/gushing out all over my vehicle. i have seen numerous and previous complaints pertaining to this issue. why hasn't anyone realized that this is most dangerous and "all vehicles" claiming to this problem should be repaired at no cost to the vehicle owner, simply a defect in manufacturing and thus needs to be addressed by corp. recall info # is 09v003000 please respond and kindly investigate this situation and advise me of my next step with local dealer. *tr

When filling vehicle up gas overflows back out onto the vehicle and ground. *tr

Fuel spitting out of tank on fill up. *tr

The car's fuel tank fails to shut-off, i.e. it doesn't appropriately respond to the shut-off mechanism. gasoline overflows from the tank, sometimes in a spills out sometimes it flows out! it doesn't matter if i use the lowest setting on the gas pump or if i manually fill the tank, once full it overfills every single time i'm refueling and gas pours out of the fill spout, running down the body of the vehicle, on my hand on my clothes and on the ground! it's not just dangerous with simple static electricity, it's a fire waiting to happen! *tr
