I have a 1999 dodge durango and i was on the highway driving 60 mph, out of nowhere the vehicle just shuts down and a semi truck was an inch from striking my vehicle from behind. the semi left skid marks that where 25 feet long. i have replaced the pcm, crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and the ignition coil and still no fix. this is my only car and i have to get to work everyday, i have no other means of transportation and i cant afford another car. i feel that my life is in jeopardy every time i drive this car. i have been in several near misses such as this one. does someone have to die before a solution is found? *tr

My dodge durango shut off with any warnig and was very scary .. *tr

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. after sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. it will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country. *tr

vehicle dies at stop light. i push it to the side of the road to investigate. vehicle engine cranks but doesn't fire. on odometer display it says no bus. fuel pump not coming on when ignition is turned on . i walk to parts store and buy fuel pump relay ,or circuit breaker. put it in , fuel pump comes on engine starts . wife is driving it two days later . vehicle dies in busy intersection . nice people push her off the road way. she calls me , i tell her to take circuit breaker to parts store and get new one. she replaces breaker ,she's on the road again. so now i do some reading find out circuit breakers just get hot stop working , cool down and work again. so some thing is drawing too much current. replace the fuel pump and filter , big pain in the you know what. vehicle dies two days later. nice man pulls me off the road. i leave vehicle sit for an hour . vehicle starts back up. so i just go on vehicle dies on me all the time. fast food lines ,busy intersections, it dies every where , every temp. i don't let mommy drive it anymore. i don't trust it to carry my baby anymore. i cant sell it . i have read about people having same exact problems . they say replace fuel pump ,did it. replace computer , did that. several years ago dealer ship put new computer in cost me $1200. all for a problem similar to this one. vehicle died at stop lights , but started up right away. i have replaced so many parts , every thing is new. i cant trust it . its very unsafe . i cant knowingly sell it to some body. thanks dodge. *tr

Car shuts down randomly when driving, in various weather conditions (hot, cold, warm, wet, etc) problem is with over heating pcm - see other peoples issues here http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml *kb

i own a 1999 dodge durango it started stalling out and stopped running at random times. my wife almost got rearended aat a traffic light. it stalled out on me on railroad tracks. if i get out and wiggle the wires to the ecm/pcm it starts back up. when it stalls out or dies nothing reads on the odometer. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *kb

About a month after buying my 5.9 slt durango i was driving on the highway at about 75mph and the engine stalled and i lost power steering as well as power brakes and the odometer read no bus. after about 10 minutes it turned back on and drove just fine the rest of the day. it was about 90 degrees out at then time of the failure. we took it to several shops and finally found out the problem (pcm/ main computer) and we were shocked that there was not a recall after hearing how often this occurred. $1200 dollars later it runs amazing. the problem did get progressively worse before we were able to get it to the dealership to fixit. the longest we had to wait was 45 minutes between stall and start up. we also installed a k&n cold air intake system that has a heat shield around the computer. i love dodge and am sad they have not yet made a recall on this potentially deadly problem. *tr

1999 dodge durango---while out driving during the hotter months, the truck would just shut down while i was driving. the brakes stopped working, the steering wheel stopped working and the odometer read "no bus". when i finally stopped the car by running into a curb, it would not start for another 30 minutes. finally got it started and two miles down the road, it happened again. after talking to other durango owners, i was directed to change the pcm. well that is a $1000.00 job. it was explained to me that the pcm box over heats because of where it is placed under the hood. that section where the pcm box is is not receiving any air flow to keep it cool. the cooling fins are nested too close to the body of the truck. this is a manufacturing problem and should be recalled . this is a safety issue, because you cannot control the car when it shuts down. you also have no warning that the car is getting ready to shut down. the first time it shut down my kids where in the car with me and we were on a very busy expressway. we were almost rear-ended. and we almost rear ended the car in front of us. please, please i beg dodge to check into this. i know that there have been several complaints on this truck because of this issue. i hope it does not take someone's death before the company steps up and takes responsibility for the manufacturing of this vehicle. *kb

This has happened on numerous occasions. while driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. first symptom - check engine light. second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. completely lost vehicle control. no power steering, no power brakes. muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. could have been easily killed. problem appears pcm-related, but from what i've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new pcm only to have the same results. this is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. i hope somebody does something with dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed. *tr

We experienced within 1 week of purchase (march 2011) the frequent stalling out, along with total loss of power brakes and power steering that has been reported by hundreds of 1999 owners. the problem occurs in primarily hot summer weather, but has also occurred in spring and fall weather with any temps over 70 degrees, although less frequently.the actions required are to raise the hood, wait for the unit to cool (or cool it artificially with cold water or ice pack) until the vehicle will restart. over a year period of experimenting, i have lessened but not cured the problem. all the solutions are related to increasing the airflow to the cpu/pcm area, which chronically overheats due to its location. if dodge would recall the 1999 model, i can imagine either of two solutions at minimal cost. (photos of my solutions are available.) if the air guard to the passenger side of the radiator has the top half removed, then it is simple to install an intake tube or shaft to direct air thru the grille to the pcm. a plastic, easy installed unit would be the lowest cost solution. failing this, the relocation of the pcm with a mounting bracket kit and a harness extension would allow placement of the unit in a cooler location (like right behind the new grille opening). my wife loses all braking and steering power assist when the engine stalls, sometimes when turning across oncoming traffic. this is a severe safety issue. it has occurred at least twice a week in hot weather for a year now, and on may 28th, 2012, it occurred 6 times within 40 miles during a 120 mile trip. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving at any speed, the contact stated that the vehicle would stall without warning. the dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for isnpection and possible repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. the current mileage was 119,000 and the approximate failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while the contact was driving at various speeds she noticed the vehicle would suddenly stall without warning. the failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. the current and failure mileage was 120000. updated 06/05/12*lj updated 06/07/12 *js

1999 dodge durango 5.9l:, vehicle dies when letting off the accelerator. have replaced the idle air control valve, cam and crankshaft sensors, computer control relay fuel pump relay and the cap and rotor along with the distrubutor. still stalls mostley in the afternoons temputre makes no differience. last time stalled in busy intersection almost got hit by a speeding car. *tr

1) events leading up to the failure? none. engine failure occurs without warning. 2) the engine failure occurs totally randomly, with no perceivable indication prior. it has happened at stop signs, in parking lots, and on roadways. were this to happen on a highway or a bridge or a steep hill, the outcome could very easily be fatal! 3) failure does not get recorded by onboard computer; hence, mechanic is unable to troubleshoot the error and fix it. to date, i have read that the car's pcm (power control module) is at fault. *tr

1999 dodge durango. stall out while driving for no reason! look at some of these websites.... http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml 120 complaints of the same nature! do something about this!!!! *tr

All of a sudden one day when we had a heat wave, our 1999 dodge durango decided to just stall out when he was in the fast lane on the freeway and almost caused him to get rear ended and another time for an accident to almost occur. this happened with no notice at all. then, three other times it stalled in the middle of the road after picking our kids up just trying to get home. this is so dangerous and dodge says its a problem with the pcm. the more i read, the more it is obvious that it is a safety concern and needs to be fixed by dodge, not all of the owners that are lucky to be alive! *tr

Engine failure , dodge durango, complete loss of power and very dangerous, computer is mounted under hood next to motor and over heats and shuts down the vehicle. it needs to be remounted inside the cab of vehicle. *tr

1999 dodge durango - engine stalls during driving, relates to computer overheating. i had the computer replaced but the problem returns. vehicle very difficult to stop or turn d/t power loss. last occurred in oncoming traffic lane while turning. computer returns no codes but odometer displays no bus. engine compartment is way too hot for this component so i do not expect anything to work except re-routing the wiring and mounting the computer outside the engine compartment. i have tried improved air flow and insulation but it simply gets too hot. i cannot stress the level of risk this problem presents. had this occurred while i was pulling a trailer over one of my usual camping routes i would not be reporting this nor would anyone else in the vehicle because losing the engine on a canyon edge would make the vehicle impossible to stop. i refuse to drive the vehicle as this has now happened even on quick trips on slow flat roads. this failure has occurred 5 times now and is predictable. hot weather, 5-15 minutes of driving, all components hot in engine compartment, let it all cool down and vehicle can re-start. odometer blinks 4 times and returns no bus fault. computer will not return a code and so is not covered under its warranty for replacement. this is not a question of if but when a class 1 mishap will occur. *tr

I currently own a 1999 dodge durango. this vehicle has been an extreme safety hazard. in the last month i have noticed that my vehicle shuts off without warning while i am still driving,on the freeway, or on a main street. two times that this has happen i had my small children in the car with me on the freeway. i was unable to turn my car back on, and it was almost impossible to get my car pulled over to a safe place. i have taken my car in several times for a diagnostic and the problem for some reason undetectable. i realize now that this has been an issue for many people who own this year and model durango. i really think that this needs to be looked into a little further because someone eventually may get hurt because of the negligence from the durango distributors. *tr

99 dodge durango stalls while driving with no warning. steering wheel locks up and brake lock up. car will read no bus on tachometer. it would restart after 10-15 min but would happen again at any time. *tr

My 1999 dodge durango shuts off unexpectedly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated that the power steering and brakes would fail sporadically. the contact also observed that the digital odometer would read "no bus". the dealer inspected the vehicle and found that the ecm was defective. the ecm was replaced and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the current mileage was 155,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle stalled and an unknown warning light illuminated. the contact was unable to immediately restart the vehicle and started that sporadically; it would take several attempts after on hour before the vehicle would restart. the vehicle was taken to several repair facilities yet the vehicle would not produce any failure codes. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 140,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. on june 8, 2010 while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the contact experienced the failure several times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership, but the dealer could not produce a failure code or duplicate the failure. the contact called the manufacturer who stated they were unaware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 156,000. the current mileage was 157,121.

My 1999 dodge durango began jolting while driving with sudden loss of power, including steering. this has happened multiple times while driving on the highway and is increasing in frequency as the weather is warmer. i was able to coast to the side of the highway, but being as there was no shoulder, i ended up in a ditch. if this were a freeway and i were in the left lane, i am not sure i would have made it to the right shoulder without an accident. the car was towed to a mechanic where it started immediately. they said it was most likely the battery. i replaced the battery and the car continued to die. i am in the medical profession and am on call for emergencies. if the car were to die while responding to an emergency call, imagine the impact on other lives. also, if the car were to die on a freeway, the result could be fatal. the car is at a mechanic currently and they have 'no idea' what is wrong with it. i have since been avoiding freeways and taking side roads with reduced speed limits out of fear that the car will quit on a freeway. the odometer reads 'no bus' during the incidents and will start up again after it 'cools' for a few minutes. this now happens 2-3 times per week and, quite frankly, the next time it does, i may just leave the car where it dies. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact had the vehicle inspected by a mechanic who changed the distributor camp, wires, fuses and the crank sensor yet the failure recurred shortly after repairs. the contact stated that the mechanic advised that the computers were failing. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for further inspection or repairs. the failure mileage was 147,000 and current mileage was 155,000.

1. no events 2. car shuts off in hot weather and cannot start for another 10 minutes to an hour. no bus light shows up 3. nothing was done to fix the problem as in, its not fixed. *tr

99 dodge durango v8. this vehicle is a piece of crap. the car stalls without warning whenever it wants without warning. this is very dangerous for my family to ride in anywhere especially on the freeway. dodge needs to do a recall on this vehicle as it is hard to tell how many fatalities have occurred from this reason. sometimes the car will run for 25-30 minutes before it shuts off and seems the car has to cool before it will start again. the code shows no bu5 but it will not run a code. *tr

I own a 99 dodge durango . while driving car completely shuts off !!!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated she has been experiencing a recurring failure of the vehicle stalling without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times where unknown repairs were made to the vehicle yet the failure would continue to recur. the failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated the vehicle stalled intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test but did not generate any failure codes. the dealer replaced the ecm, pcm, crank sensor and the fuel pump. the failure seemed to be corrected however, the vehicle began to stall two months after the repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure who informed the contact to file a complaint. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 205,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. she stated while driving at any speed from 5 mph or more, the vehicle would stall without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times who replaced the fuel pump, crankshaft sensor and the power train control module (pcm); to no avail. there were no further repairs to the vehicle and there were no recalls. the contact was concerned about the safety risk since the vehicle stalled continuously. the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current was 128,227. the vin was not available.

1999 dodge durango has continuously stalled in heavy traffic. engine, electrical shut down with no notice. no codes appear. we have replaced camshaft and crankshaft sensors, replaced and rewired starter but problem continues. this is a very dangerous occurrence and we have missed near (possibly fatal) accidents. someone needs to step in and assist owners before a fatality occurs. thank goodness the semi truck driver who was traveling at 45+ mph saw our stalled vehicle and was able to move. imagine the scene if it had stalled on a railroad crossing! *tr

1999 dodge durango constantly stalling out. my wife was stuck sideways in the middle of a busy intersection today after pulling out and the vehicle died during acceleration. has happened a number of times and apparently is happening to a lot of the same year durangos. simply go to carcomplaints.com and review the number of similar incidents. there is little to no warning. we have seen a difference in the frequency of the occurrence when it is raining or has rained. it does it more frequently when it has. it is very sporadic, so we never know when it is safe to drive or not. if there are any warning signs, we would know to use extra caution prior to driving it that day or take other forms of transportation. i certainly hope no one gets killed while this is happening and i hope it is not one of my family. please investigate this situation! *tr

My 1999 dodge durango just stops running but usually starts back up again. my wife usually drives this car with our 3 children and presents a very dangerous problem if it stops running at the wrong time. there are many complaints on the internet about the same problem with this model. i feel that dodge needs to investigate this problem and find a solution for its customers. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving at speeds of 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes and once restarted and in motion, the vehicle would stall again. the dealer advised having a diagnostic test performed on the vehicle to determine how to repair the failures. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. this problem occurred 9 additional times. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 131,000.

Durango just dies in middle of traffic and it will not start. odometer says no bus and dodge cant tell me what is wrong with it!!!!!!! *tr

1999 dodge durango 4 wheel drive engine will stall and will not start for 10 to 20 minutes. gauges are inoperative. no bus message displayed on odometer. stalls in traffic. freeways almost got rear ended a bunch of times ...please help before we get killed. *tr

1999 durango stalls randomly without warning. recently while traveling on the highway with my wife and two kids it stalled at 60 mph on route 15 in connecticut. it was everything i could do to keep the truck on the road and get it restarted. the results could have been catastrophic. i will no longer let my family ride with me in the vehicle. i have done some searches on-line and am shocked to see hundreds of post about the same problem and no resolution or acknowledgment from dodge. i feel there needs to be a recall and corrective action. of course if dodge doesn't know how to fix the problem it's very difficult to do a recall. they should therefore buy the vehicles back from the current owners. *tr

Yes i would like to make a complaint about the 99 dodge durango,,,,,,,it shuts off while driving ,without any kind of warning ,no sputtering,no jerking ,,,just shuts off ,,,,my mother is 56 years old and for her to have to be driving her car and being in danger of it shutting off anywhere, anytime, residential street ,freeway the steering locks up the brakes don't work ,,,this is a very dangerous problem not only for her and the passengers in her car like her grand daughter, friends, family but for the person driving behind her that has to stop very quickly,,,,,this can lead to people getting seriously hurt,,,,,she has taken it to several mechanics ,the dealership and they cannot diagnose the problem,,,,,so after much time and money wasted i got on the internet to see what i could find ,and found hundreds of people with the same problem,,,and what it seems to be is the pcm overheating and shutting itself off, after about ten minutes of it cooling down it turns right back on ,,,,,,,then over heats again and shuts itself off again ,,i think this needs to be addressed by dodge before someone gets in a serious accident. *tr

This truck should be recalled!! deaths will occur with this and probably already have. will start researching that with insurance companies! the durango shuts down without warning. you have no control of the vehicle when this happens. the oil pressure drops to 0 and the truck then attempts to stall or does stall. if the truck cools or you bet cool air on the pcm, then the oil gauge jumps back up to 40 and the truck runs fine. have had the oil checked and there oil is running though the engine as it should be although the gauge says 0 and the check gauges light and check engine light comes on. this truck a safety hazard and a liability to whomever is driving. we still owe $3500 on it and it now makes a nice yard ornament. - this is a serious safety issue for all of us drivers. we shouldn't have to bite the bullet on this one. driving is dangerous enough without driving a durango that shuts down continually and without notice. you lose your power steering, power brakes and it's hard to navigate or even get a truck this large to stop. we have the 4x4 with the 5.9l engine. it's a tank that i used to love until it became too dangerous to drive. dodge does not want to take any responsibility for this and every dodge dealership you call acts like it's the 1st time they have heard of it. with the thousands of posts that are on the internet, i find that hard to believe. dodge needs to take responsibility for this. buy back our trucks or at least give us a large enough rebate on a new vehicle. but they do need to take responsibility. please contact me. these trucks are too dangerous to be on the road. www.carcomplaints.com lists 62 complaints and there are many many more. *tr

99 dodge durango slt 5.2 318 motor blew. only had 105,000 miles on it changed oil and did upkeep right on schedule. this pile crap has been nothing but a lemon since we bought it. first it started shutting off while driving, had to fight tooth and nail to get dodge to replace pcm, i did the investigation to figure out the problem because they did not want to pay for it and tried really hard to stretch this out to where i would not have warranty anymore. they wanted to send us off with a black box after they supposedly fixed problem but didn't. now my motor blew! we have taken motor out and it looks all burned up...what a complete piece of crap..so angry that dodge refuses to step up on these obvious defects that are their fault not the poor consumer who paid way to much for this lemon of a vehicle. also have to replace all ball joints, because the 99 should of been included in the recall!!!! thanks for nothing dodge!!! i will never buy american again, this was my first time of straying from nissans and toyotas,,,never again. *tr

My wife has a 99 durango 5.9l 4x4 with 175,000 miles. about three weeks ago immediately after a standard tune-up the vehicle began reading multiple misfires and a "p1391" error code. i recheck everything and use the scanner to reset all of the trouble codes on the truck. next thing you know - everything is running fine and there weren't any error codes registering. next day my wife drives the truck and calls me later in the day and says just suddenly stopped working while she was driving the truck down the road ' no steering, no brakes, nothing. she was ' fortunately ' able to coast it to the side of the road and re-start it were it fired right back up and was driving fine. then it happens again the next day ' again while she's driving down the road in traffic and with no warning. so, i hookup the handheld again and this time i only read the p1391 error code. so i replace the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. so now i'm searching the internet forums and find out that this is a known but unacknowledged problem by dodge. no rhyme or reason ' it appears to have happened across all mileage ranges and in all parts of the country and in particular with the 1998 ' 2003 dodge durangos. so know we're faced with the prospect that a new vehicle computer ($690.00 dealer installed) might fix the problem but that we may (because no one seems to know for sure) have to additionally replace several other sensors that, if not replaced, may blow out the new vehicle computer. obviously, if this a known design flaw (placement of vehicle computer ' pcm ' in engine compartment unnecessarily exposes the unit to high temperatures thereby causing the unit to fail) with potentially fatal results (sudden and complete loss of power in the middle of traffic or while rounding a corner, etc.) then dodge needs to issue a recall and/or by some other means replace those units that are defective as a result and redesign the placement of the unit in another area. *tr

The car cuts off while it is driving at various speeds, including highway speeds and with no warning at all. after a few minutes it will usually start back up. there were no injuries but if it was to cut off while driving and going around a corner it could easily run off the road or into oncoming traffic. i have read about lots of other drivers or this same type of vehicle having the same exact problem. *tr

Intake plenum gasket failed. over a 1 month time and only 60k in mileage. oil is sucked out of the engine like a straw. i see dodge has a service bulletin about the issue but this really is a defect since it has happened to a whole hell of alot of people. next is these crappy balljoints. i had one fail 2 jears ago with only 49k in mileage. i went to the dealership to find that they only have a recall on 2001-2003 which is assanine since the same control arms and ball joints are used in the 1998 and 1999 models too. the property damage involved is the damage to my vehicle from a defective gasket or engine design.

My engine shut down when its really hot weather, the motor shut down when i turn a corner and would start back had to have it towed both times. the air condition keep going out. it occur 3 times and the last time it wouldn't start back. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. on eight or nine occasions, while either idling or driving between 25-35 mph, the vehicle has stalled in the middle of traffic. sometimes, the vehicle will immediately restart and other times, it takes a half an hour before restarting. the vehicle has been to the dealer on three occasions for this failure, but they have been unable to duplicate the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving 15-70 mph, the engine shuts off. a code that reads "no bus" appears on the instrument panel. the vehicle is currently not able to restart. the failure occurred two weeks ago and the mechanic could not determine the cause of the failure. the vin was unknown. the current mileage was 150,000 and failure mileage was 149,000.
