Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 1999 Dodge Durango

When outside temperature goes beyond 80 degrees fahrenheit, while in motion, the computer has shut off the engine multiple times and a code saying no bus is displayed in the dash for a few seconds. it has happened to me going 70 mph. it has happened going 45 mph and as low as 20 mph. all i have to do is pull over and let the computer cool off and it turns on again. this is very dangerous as power steering shuts off and brakes become very hard. i have a great car in the winter. in the summer it's a death trap that can shut off engine, power steering and brakes in the middle of the freeway. check youtube and google for "dodge durango no bus" and you will find this is a major issue with the computer.

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. vehicle lost power. nearly stranded and concerned about being injured or killed due to vehicle losing electrical power no electrical power in vehicle; engine control module overheated while driving at 55 mph, without warning the vehicle lost electrical power. the contact stated that the power steering and brakes became inoperable. the contact was able to restart the vehicle after approximately 20 minutes. the vehicle was restarted and driven for approximately one mile before the vehicle lost electrical power once again. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the diagnostic code reader stated no buss. the contact was informed that the engine control module overheated due to its placement in proximity to the exhaust manifold. additionally, the contact stated that the nut on the steering wheel knuckle was stripped which caused the steering to be difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and several unknown dealers were notified of the failure. the contact was informed by the manufacturer that there would be no assistance offered. the failure mileage was unknown. piir = y. ah *bf consumer stated emc brain overheats in the engine compartment. steering knuckle strips out, tie rod ends, manifold bolts, and ball joints. check attachment exceeds 2000 characters. *jb

My dodge durango will suddenly shut off while i'm driving it has happened several times on the highway i lose all power and have almost got into accidents when this has happened it also happened when my car is just sitting it happens after the car has been on for about 15 mins i have read online from several other people that this has happened to them as well

1999 dodge durango pcm/ecu will fail when it gets hot, giving a no bus, and causing the engine to stall and lose power steering and brakes. this has happened to my vehicle on numerous occasions at highway speed where i was barely able to control the vehicle. this is a huge safety issue. i have had the pcm/ecu replaced over 5 times, which is extremely dangerous. experts have pin pointed the issues to certain chips coming unsoldered in the pcm/ecu due to heat. keenan laws has youtube videos on exactly what the issues are, as well as many other have done. dodge contract's out the soldering of these chips, but they don't do a good job as some don't work at all. for example, we put three in before we got one that worked. this is inexcusable and puts people lives at very high risk. i paid around $800 to a dodge dealership in santa rosa california for a pcm/ecu that lasted only months. it takes a tremendous amount of strength to control the durango with no power steering and brakes. dodge hasn't been a help or the pcm/ecu rebuilders. currently i'm waiting on another rebuilt pcm/ecu, which the rebuilder can't even give a time when i could get one. the date below is the most current incident, but this has been going on since about 2009 and approximately 170,000 miles.

The pcm has already been replaced and it ran perfectly fine for 2 months and the same problem starting happening shutting off while im driving ive almost been in 3 car accidents while i was driving cause the vehicle shut itself off while i was driving on a 45 mph road an twice on the highway driving 65mph something needs to been down so once on city streets and 2 times on state route 75 highway

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving 75 mph, the vehicle experienced a complete loss of power. the failure occurred without warning. cass burch (801 e screen st, quitman, ga) was contacted and offered no assistance. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electronic control module was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

Ecm shuts my durango off while driving due to heat from engine. very scary and dangerous. i was driving on the highway from my sons football game when out of nowhere i lose all power and my steering wheel locks up, just barely was i able to avoid causing a multiple vehicle pileup also abs pops up for most of the time.

The engine shuts off while driving. yes in motion and on city street loss of power steering and brakes. there has been hundreds of complaints listed on the internet under this model and year. it appears that the problem may be one of several problems i have e mailed [email protected] several times and they pretend that they know nothing about this problem they continue to put up a smoke screen, i have copies of the correspondence if you would like it, the car is parked since it is unsafe to drive, this problem occurred two different times. ...updated 04/11/17 *bf *cn

Another randomly stalling durango. sometimes starts back immediately, sometimes after a few hours.

Abs light and break light come on after rolling down the road there is a lot of people complaining about this i would like to know is this could be a recall on this

Usually happens when it is hot out but the truck just shuts off with out notice all power too all gauges go to 0 power steering. does not matter how fast or slow i am going. i have to park it and let it sit anywhere from 5 minutes up to two hours. i have had several parts replaced and the problem continues no one seems to have an answer. this is so dangerous not only for me but also all other drivers on the road. this needs to be figured out soon i fear for my life and the life of others.

The vehicle is hard to steer it also has a problem disengaging the 4 wheel drive the vehicle's tires in the front rub against the wheel wells causing uneven tread wear the vehicle is deemed unsafe also due to the vehicle's suspension bushings in the front in the tie rods in the front of the vehicle are loose causing a over compensation and under compensation for steering possibly resulting in fatality ultimately due to a bad lane change forcing the vehicle to collide with another vehicle ending up ultimately in fatality.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving approximately 40 mph, the engine stalled and the speedometer and the rpm gauges decreased to zero without warning. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 9,000.

I drove to town, stopped and turned off my engine for an 30 minute wait with construction. it started and i drove to visit my son. i turn off the engine, stayed a bit to visit, went to go home and it wouldn't start. finally got it to start and drove it home and parked it. drove to town a couple of days later and it died while driving, barely made it to town. looked for information on the net only to find this is a very common problem and a major safety issue. this vehicle dies while driving and control of the vehicle at highway speeds is highly dangerous. why hasn't chrysler issued a recall? are they waiting for someone (or an entire family) to die? is that really what it takes, a loss of life before anything will be done? i've read that it could be the pcm, the pcm wiring harness, or a computer chip/sensor/relay something or other under the air cleaner. no real, permanent, fix at this point, a lot of people are struggling to determine the cause and a fix for this problem. why isn't chrysler helping? chrysler doesn't back their product? no wonder american people opt for imports, they are reliable and built to last. how about doing the right thing chrysler and step up! *tr

Engine shutdown, out of the blue. nobus appeared on odometer. all gauges were on 0, but all other electronics worked. starter would crank, but ignition would not ignite. i'm not sure if fuel pump went on or not. vehicle would not start back up for apx 20 minutes. a couple days later, it happened again, then twice in one day. the quickest, but temporary, solution is to cool down pcm. an ice pack works great! but this is not always convenient. needless to say, problem is worse on hot days. once this happens, you need to replace pcm because solder joints are broken within. when unit cools, metal contracts, and contact is made again, and truck will start. but keep in mind-the solder joints are still broken. when unit heats back up, metal will expand, and connection will be lost again, causing engine shutdown and no bus to electrical ignition system. the very first time this happened, i had gone over a bump, which is probably what initially "broke" the solder joint. a new pcm can run $400. one from a junk yard could work, but there's always the risk that, it too, has the same problem-maybe that's why the truck is in the junkyard to begin with! and if it was in front end collision, good chance it won't be any good either! i've owned my durango for 13 years, and it has never really left me stranded. but now that it has this problem, combined with bad design of front hub assy, vehicle is very unsafe and it's time to retire it - even though motor still runs strong. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly shut off without warning. the contact indicated that the failure occurred on multiple occasions and each time the vehicle failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the ignition coil was faulty and needed to be replaced. the ignition coil was replaced but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 98,000.

Electrical problem just shuts the whole electrical system down "while i'm driving", at any speed...doesn't matter the temperature, it happens on any day, and at random. major safety issue, brakes and steering become unusable. just missed rear ending a vehicle the other day which got me to have to write this. i have to remove electrical terminal from post for 30 seconds, put back on terminal post, then hopefully it starts. i cant even drive my family anymore due to safety hazard.it has happened at least thirty times now. local dodge dealer says they have no idea whats the matter, yet hundreds of owners online postings prove what i am saying. please resolve this before someone, perhaps myself, dies..... *tt

I have a 1999 dodge durango and i was on the highway driving 60 mph, out of nowhere the vehicle just shuts down and a semi truck was an inch from striking my vehicle from behind. the semi left skid marks that where 25 feet long. i have replaced the pcm, crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and the ignition coil and still no fix. this is my only car and i have to get to work everyday, i have no other means of transportation and i cant afford another car. i feel that my life is in jeopardy every time i drive this car. i have been in several near misses such as this one. does someone have to die before a solution is found? *tr

Hampton, va. this morning i was driving my kids to school, and the truck just turned off. i lost the power steering & brakes. i was in a school zone, i was going under 25 mph when this happened. after me and the kids pushed the car out of the street, i let the truck cool off for about 20 minutes then it started up and i was able to drive home. by my understanding from blogs and the dodge customer service is a known issue, but nothing has been done about this. *tr

On 9/8/2013, the car quit without warning. the car had been running at highway speed without issue and without any warning lights. the engine stopped running many miles from any assistance. the engine continued to crank over. there was plenty of gasoline. there was no spark from the ignition system, coil, plugs, etc. there have many previous events. there have been many engine electrical system repairs. including the pcm at ~$1600 55 weeks ago. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving approximately 50 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact merged to the shoulder of the road and was able to restart the vehicle thirty minutes later. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the contact replaced the ignition coil. after the repair the failure continued. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 225,000.

Once i was driving for 5-10 mins the car would shut down. also the front suspension makes noise. when im stopping in a red light my front driver side seat moves back and forward. *tr

I was driving down the highway when the vehicle powered down without notice. i lost my power steering and the powered brakes. it would randomly without any warning. turns out it was the computer, and the mechanic said that dodge is notorious for the computer failing. the computer is very close to the engine, and this causes the board to warp and connections to break. these cars need to be recalled, and this issue needs to be addressed, or it will get someone killed. *jb

I was driving on the highway at 65mph, and the vehicle shut off completely. lost power steering, power brakes, everything. had 3 small children in the car and had to with all my power (i am 5'9" 235 lbs) navigate the vehicle to the side of the road. i have found this is extremely common problem with this vehicle. many of the posts state is a manufacturing flaw of where the pcm is placed in the engine. *tr

While driving on a highway at speeds of 60-65 mph, with my child, my vehicle's engine died without warning, without indications of imminent failure, no symptoms or signs of stress. the dash lights and alarms did not send notification until i was already coasting down the side of the emergency lane. while trying to steer the suddenly nonpowered steering wheel thru traffic i began to worry if we were going to make it to the side without hurting anyone or damaging any vehicles. at the time i was just thankful to have made it home with my child in one piece but soon i realized this story could have had a much worse outcome. the vehicle's ecm was faulty and resulted in an electrical issue that caused the entire system to temporarily shutdown without notice. *tr

I was pulling a boat to the lake when the vehicle just cut off , i lost all power such as power steering ,power brakes .this could have cause a major accident ! once i got on the side of the road and opened the hood i moved around the wires on the computer , i heard the fuel pump engage and then i started it . it ran a few minutes and did it again ! both times their was a bus error on the odometer . as i have studied this problem ,computers (pcm) are overheating and causing connection problems . this is going to cause people to have accidents and get people killed ! dodge needs to fix this problem ! there are many ! *tr

Vehicle shuts down without warning also losing power steering, brakes etc. may or may not start after 15 minutes or so. have had grandkids with me on 2 separate occasions, one being sitting in 90 degree heat for over an hour and vehicle wouldnt start, waiting on tow. another time vehicle shut down and had to jump lanes and coast to get to side road to stop. very, very dangerous situations many times! havent drove it since. sitting in driveway around 3 months. abs has also gone out. *tr

Vehicle dies with no notice, problem is pcm. this is a widely known problem with several years of the dodge products. the pcm fails and the car can lose power while in operation. this is a dangerous situation because the car can lose power while operating on the highway or at any speed! dodge refuses to acknowledge the problem. a replacement pcm is reported to resolve the problem temporarily. some complaints indicate that it's an overheating issue, however mine stalls and dies in various weather conditions. usually, i can unplug the connectors to the pcm and plug them back in to reset the computer and the vehicle will start and run again for a period of time. since this problem is so unpredictable, the car is not safe to have on the road. *kb

To whom it may concern,it seems like this is a serious problem that dodge should have to stand behind. it is very dangerous. the vehicle just dies. will start up about 5 minutes later. seems like a computer problem. i have previewed where this has happened to a lot of people. same problem. *tr

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. after sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. it will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country. *tr

vehicle dies at stop light. i push it to the side of the road to investigate. vehicle engine cranks but doesn't fire. on odometer display it says no bus. fuel pump not coming on when ignition is turned on . i walk to parts store and buy fuel pump relay ,or circuit breaker. put it in , fuel pump comes on engine starts . wife is driving it two days later . vehicle dies in busy intersection . nice people push her off the road way. she calls me , i tell her to take circuit breaker to parts store and get new one. she replaces breaker ,she's on the road again. so now i do some reading find out circuit breakers just get hot stop working , cool down and work again. so some thing is drawing too much current. replace the fuel pump and filter , big pain in the you know what. vehicle dies two days later. nice man pulls me off the road. i leave vehicle sit for an hour . vehicle starts back up. so i just go on vehicle dies on me all the time. fast food lines ,busy intersections, it dies every where , every temp. i don't let mommy drive it anymore. i don't trust it to carry my baby anymore. i cant sell it . i have read about people having same exact problems . they say replace fuel pump ,did it. replace computer , did that. several years ago dealer ship put new computer in cost me $1200. all for a problem similar to this one. vehicle died at stop lights , but started up right away. i have replaced so many parts , every thing is new. i cant trust it . its very unsafe . i cant knowingly sell it to some body. thanks dodge. *tr

My durango randomly dies during operation and on several occasions has endangered lives of civilians. *tr

Warm weather the engine quits. 3 time within two weeks driving 65-70 mph on highway while pulling a boat all 3 times. the problem is the pcm on the passengers side of the engine compartment. gets to hot and shuts the engine down. no brakes, no steering! this problem is documented in dodge forums thousands of times with everyone quoting the exact same issues with nothing being done nor any fixes that will work. *tr

Car shuts down randomly when driving, in various weather conditions (hot, cold, warm, wet, etc) problem is with over heating pcm - see other peoples issues here http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml *kb

Driving the vehicle and it shuts off without warning. after a short period of time the vehicle will restart and go a couple of miles and shut off again with out warning. *tr

This has happened on numerous occasions. while driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. first symptom - check engine light. second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. completely lost vehicle control. no power steering, no power brakes. muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. could have been easily killed. problem appears pcm-related, but from what i've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new pcm only to have the same results. this is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. i hope somebody does something with dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed. *tr

We experienced within 1 week of purchase (march 2011) the frequent stalling out, along with total loss of power brakes and power steering that has been reported by hundreds of 1999 owners. the problem occurs in primarily hot summer weather, but has also occurred in spring and fall weather with any temps over 70 degrees, although less frequently.the actions required are to raise the hood, wait for the unit to cool (or cool it artificially with cold water or ice pack) until the vehicle will restart. over a year period of experimenting, i have lessened but not cured the problem. all the solutions are related to increasing the airflow to the cpu/pcm area, which chronically overheats due to its location. if dodge would recall the 1999 model, i can imagine either of two solutions at minimal cost. (photos of my solutions are available.) if the air guard to the passenger side of the radiator has the top half removed, then it is simple to install an intake tube or shaft to direct air thru the grille to the pcm. a plastic, easy installed unit would be the lowest cost solution. failing this, the relocation of the pcm with a mounting bracket kit and a harness extension would allow placement of the unit in a cooler location (like right behind the new grille opening). my wife loses all braking and steering power assist when the engine stalls, sometimes when turning across oncoming traffic. this is a severe safety issue. it has occurred at least twice a week in hot weather for a year now, and on may 28th, 2012, it occurred 6 times within 40 miles during a 120 mile trip. *tr

My 1999 dodge durango dies while driving without warning. this happens everytime i drive and multiple times while driving. i have replaced the pcm (per dodge) and it hasn't changed how the suv runs!! *tr

Same as all the others, my dodge durango gets hot then shuts down. as it stalls, if you look at the digital odometer it will read "no bus" and the digital thermostat reads 141 degrees. after sitting anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes it restarts and runs fine for a while before doing it again. after much research i found it was the computer needed to be replaced. there's a company out in florida that will send you a remanufactured one for about $500 and it's 4 bolts to change out. come on dodge, why can't you fix this mess????? *tr

You go down the road doesn't mater how fast or slow you go just shots down put 2 pcm in does the same than shut down and say no bus had to pay a shop to say the pcm was no good to send it back to get a no one. *tr

1999 dodge durango. stall out while driving for no reason! look at some of these websites.... http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml 120 complaints of the same nature! do something about this!!!! *tr

There was no warning signs leading up to the problem. my 99 dodge durango has shut down on me twice in the past week or so. i have been to many websites and heard from many that this is a common problem with this car. no one really knows what is wrong. i have heard that the ecu is too close to the engine's heat and causes it or the wires to short out especially in the summer heat. one it shuts off it will start again but it seems it needs a bit to cool down. i have not done anything to fix it yet cause i hear there is no solution. i have purchased some heat shielding tape and sheets to put around it but have not received them in the mail so have not tried it yet. *tr

Driving the vehicle and it shuts off without warning. i have replaced the pcm. after a short period of time the vehicle will restart and go a couple of miles and shut off again with out warning. *tr

I own a 99 dodge durango, 5.9 liter, the events to the failure were stalling while driving on freeway, at stop, in intersections, without warning. when attempting to restart, dash cluster would not function, read no bus on odometer, and show i had no fuel on gas gauge. also when it would stall i would lose brakes and power steering, making it hard to get out of the way of traffic or move to the side of the road. the first time it happened i had my wife and 2 infants with me on the freeway doing 65 in the middle lane. not only unexpected, extremely dangerous. since then i will not allow my family in this car. things that were done to correct the issue were fuel pump, cap and rotor, plugs, wires, crank sensor, and pcm. i have receipts for all work and parts. old pcm not available due to core. *tr

1999 dodge durango - engine stalls during driving, relates to computer overheating. i had the computer replaced but the problem returns. vehicle very difficult to stop or turn d/t power loss. last occurred in oncoming traffic lane while turning. computer returns no codes but odometer displays no bus. engine compartment is way too hot for this component so i do not expect anything to work except re-routing the wiring and mounting the computer outside the engine compartment. i have tried improved air flow and insulation but it simply gets too hot. i cannot stress the level of risk this problem presents. had this occurred while i was pulling a trailer over one of my usual camping routes i would not be reporting this nor would anyone else in the vehicle because losing the engine on a canyon edge would make the vehicle impossible to stop. i refuse to drive the vehicle as this has now happened even on quick trips on slow flat roads. this failure has occurred 5 times now and is predictable. hot weather, 5-15 minutes of driving, all components hot in engine compartment, let it all cool down and vehicle can re-start. odometer blinks 4 times and returns no bus fault. computer will not return a code and so is not covered under its warranty for replacement. this is not a question of if but when a class 1 mishap will occur. *tr

I have owned this vehicle for almost 2 years. it started last summer when the vehicle started dying for no reason and without warning. took to mechanic said o2 sensor. replaced. then does it a few days later. took back. transmission slipping. rebuilt. then winter comes runs great. thought problem was fixed. so this summer comes, starts dying again. so took to a mechanic said it was the crank shaft sensor. replaced. did it as i left his house. he took it back said it was the pcm. am still waiting for one after the one i got was bad. replaced another o2 sensor and it dies 5 times on my way home yesterday with my 7 year old and my 7 month old in my vehicle. i live in california so to be stranded on the side of the road in 92 degree weather is unacceptable. this is not fair, and after only searching for 5 minutes i have found hundreds of complaints on this vehicle and nothing has been done. it is dangerous for a vehicle to die going down the freeway at 65 miles per hour with children in the car and it just dies leaving you with no control of the vehicle and barely being able to get off the road. i was nearly rear ended by a semi the other day on the freeway. so scary. if any thing happens to my children i will sue!! *tr

The pcm/ecu fails giving the no bus signal on odometer while driving the truck shuts down and losing power steering making it hard to steer and loss of vacuum making it almost impossible to stop. *tr

Recently i have been having issues with my 1999 dodge durango losing all power. the odometer ready "no bus" and nothing in the truck works, not even the brakes. i did some research online and found out that this is a common problem with the durango. i also found out that it's due to the location of the truck's computer. it is extremely close to the engine and with the increased heat during the summer, the combination is too much for the computer to handle so it shuts down. the best reference of this i read was "the brain stop talking to the body" that indicates how serious this is. i haven't done anything to fix the issue because it was manufactured this way and i'm unsure if the computer can be moved without causing other problems. this has happened to me at least 10 times. all occurrences were days it was hot outside. at least 90 degrees. this problem is so dangerous. i was on the highway when it happened the first time, and had no clue what to do. i know now to let it cool off, but i would like to be able to drive my truck when i need to! this is a very serious problem. i'm sure that someone has been killed or injured as a result of this. *tr

1999 dodge durango. truck has been stalling and dying for over a year now, with no warning. the vehicle will shut down causing you to lose power brake + steering. i've changed all sensors. plugs, wires etc, and still stalls. no mechanic or dealer can re-create the problem and dodge has no record of this problem being an issue, i'm the first! ha! *tr

Dodge durango 1999 engine just dies while driving gauges drop engine stalls, then hold on and pray that nobody hits you, i have had the pcm replaced at the dealer $850.00 only for it to start the same problem 5 weeks later, i have taken it back to the dealer they say it shows no error and without it being down they are unable to test any further. this is very dangerous. i have spent over $1300.00 and many hours on the side of the road. this needs to be addressed by dodge! i have been lucky to avoid numerous accidents. *tr
