Apparently it is a known issue with dodge chargers and other vehicles with the same engine but the 3.5l will develop a "ticking" noise that is caused by a rocker dowel pin shearing off. a simple search online will show numerous owners with the same issue. from the shifting of the sheared pin, the oiling holes become misaligned and the rockers starve from oil a bit. (according to one discussion) (here are a couple discussions about it: http://www.chargerforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152670 http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php/300445-3-5-lifter-rocker-tick-fix ) it is most noticeable when the car is idling or at speeds under 15mph due to outside road noise but it is always happening. it has been doing this for at least a year and only after it started getting louder did i really start researching the potential problem. there is no point that the engine does not make the noise. when it is running, it has a tick noise and i'm afraid its going to wear out the inside of the engine or cause further damage.
Driving 55 mph on highway in my 2012 dodge charger,i began to smell oil burning, looked down and noticed that the car was running at the highest temperature, 264 degrees. thankfully i was close to a reputable garage close to my home. i parked the car there, asked for a gentle man to assist me, and once the car cooled enough to open the hood, he took a look. he noticed that the hose leading from the coolant reservoir to the engine was completely sucked in, and the coolant reservoir was filling with oil. upon inspection from dealership i was informed that the engine needed to be completely replaced due to metal shavings and debris found in oil pan. *tr
P60 - recall / nhtsa 14v-634 (alternator) on sunday 01/11/14 at 7:00pm at night my 2012 dodge charger with only 39,000 plus miles, (basically brand new) completely shut down in san andreas california on a back country road in the middle of the road at night, with my fiance driving and our two minor children in the back seat. all electrical systems shut down completely and the car actually put itself into park in the middle of the road at a stop sign and busy intersection. no hazard lights were available or working and this became an extremely dangerous situation.. chp was dispatched right away. (evidently by a passing driver who called 911 emergency). chp arrived at the site, parked their patrol car behind our car and used its hazard lights to warn oncoming drivers of this hazard. chp immediately called aaa, (for an emergency hazard situation), to remove our car off the road and out of traffic. chp stated our car, being in the middle of the road with no hazard light capability, was an immediate life threatening danger to my fiance and our two children and all other passing motorists. aaa arrived right away and towed our car approx. 40 feet off to the side of the road and immediately charged us a $200 hazard vehicle towing fee. aaa dispatched another tow truck as this tow truck driver was off duty and he only responded due to the emergency of the situation, (the call by the chp for a hazard vehicle).we had no alternative but to have the car towed to our residence in columbia california. the next morning, monday, 1/12/14, century service extended warranty administration requested the car towed to a full dodge dealership. i had the car towed from columbia california to modesto california dodge chrysler for $110. (the closest full dodge chrysler dealership). the dealer diagnosed the car. the alternator had gone out and shut down all electrical on the car. *tr

Hello. yesterday, i was driving on a city street 35 mph and i received an error message battery saver mode. i had never seen this before, all of a sudden my car starting going slower and slower. i was very lucky that i was at my destination before the car finally shut off. i could not do anything. my car would not do anything. i called aaa, i could not access the trunk. i am so glad my car doors were not locked. i had my daughter climb behind the back seat to lift the trunk. aaa checked my battery through the trunk and kept saying something is still on. my car was still in start although the car was completely shut off. then when he tried charging my battery, it was still draining. i am so glad the car did not shut off while i was on the highway (which i travel frequently with my children). i have learned that my alternator is bad. now i have to pay out of pocket for an alternator for a 2012 car, a 2012222222222 car! i can not even believe it! contacted chrysler and the rep told me if i take it to an independent shop there is not a guarantee i could receive my money back soooooo now i have to tow it to a dealer, which means there is more out of pocket expense. this is crazy and i expect so much more from such a long term company. i am livid that my car completely shut down on me and am thankful that my children and i are safe. *tr
I was driving on the freeway going about 55 mph and all of a sudden i noticed a message appear on my car stating "battery on safe mode". a few minutes after that message appeared i noticed the brake light popped up, along with the battery sign, and fuel light. as i exited the freeway i started smelling smoke so i pulled into a gas station. my car completely shut off. all power was gone. i tried jump starting the car a few times. the first time i never got a charge. the second time i let the car sit 5 mins to charge and was able to get power but the same messages appeared and the car would not start. the 3rd and finally time i tried, the power cut on but once i disconnected the cables the power shut down again. i ended up getting the car towed and later found out the battery was drained due to the alternator being bad. so the alternator went out. i'm glad i was able to pull into the gas station that day, instead of the car shutting down on the freeway. i could have been in a serious accident. *tr

First of all the customer service at the local dealership! sucks! when you called they (it's a call center), and they transfer where no one ever picks up. my problem occured on 8/6/2014. my car was driving in battery mode (which is not listed in the manual by the way). so, i called the dodge chyrsler customer service to find out what was going on 1-800-423-6343. only thing they advise was take to the dealer for diagnostic testing (which you the consumer have to pay for). now remind you i have only had this car for one year and i am the second owner. i have kept up all my oil changes and regualr maintenance required for mileage, but all all of sudden the freaking alternator goes out on a 2012 dodge charger. of course this does not sound right. so, i get a call back from the local dealership and they advise me that it will be $655 plus diagnostic. i have beed advised by the dealership as well as the chysler group llc customer center they can not assist with cost due to decline matrix and the history of the vehicle. i have gotten nothing but bs from everyone in regards to the so called case no. they gave me. the cutomer service representative have been extremely rude. i ask for a manager which they advised me they could not give me. (remind you again i use to work for a call center) i have not never heard a rep telling a customer you can not speak to a manager. bull crap! also, i was told they are not allowed to give out headquarters numbers or information of address (which i ended up google the information). i planned on taking this matter up. i have electric issues, airbag issues, and more since i got this vehicle. everyone tried to warn me about buying a dodge, but i guess they were right ang i was wrong. thanks, a concern owner of a dodge charger. *tr
Ac, speedometer, radio, all stopped working. icons on the dashboard kept flashing out of control. the vehicle became difficult to steer, windshield wipers started on their own, windows locked. then car just stopped working all together while i was driving. i thought maybe it was the battery so i attempted to get a jump. the vehicle turned on while it was being "jumped". as soon as the cables came off the strange behavior started again. *tr
Leaving work i noticed my radio suddenly turned off, display showed power saver mode. i contacted my husband by cell phone and he advised me to stop driving it because there had been reports of fires, crashes and loss of control. i was turning on to my street and i lost control of steering, brakes, and all power in the car. i was coasting to park and noticed that there was smoke coming out from under the hood. my husband came down to look at the vehicle and could not turn vehicle on at all. now, i drive our car to and from work, a 15 minute trip 6 days a week. we regularly keep our vehicle serviced. this car is coming on a 2 year anniversay and i have paid for a new battery, parts/labor and diagnostic test. dealership says that my car is safe to drive but the alternator is making a noise and that it can last from 6 months to a year or die a week from now. how dramatic is that? chrysler gave me a case # and adivsed me that they needed to know what was wrong with it before they offered cost assistance. there is no amount of money that either company can give me to replace the loss of a life in my family. please keep us safe and fix these defective vehicles off of the road to prevent even more unnecessary collisions. *js
I was driving into a martin's grocery store parking lot when i noticed the engine high temperature light illuminated,i immediately parked vehicle and turned the engine off.i then noticed steam escaping from underneath hood,i got out and away from the car,and i immediately called crossroad dodge dealership srvuce department in prince george, va.i talked with a male service technician about what happened and he replied",let engine cool for 1 hour before driving it to dealership,i waited 1 hour and then drove it to the dealership. *tr
First,i received warning for "battery saver mode" on dashboard. later in the day, i took car to dealership for a service visit and the car shut down right there. all lights went crazy and car put itself in neutral very violently. i am afraid of this car and what it may do if this were to happen at a higher speed. once the car took over control, i could not shut it off, put it in gear, or anything else for that matter. dealer says its simply a bad battery and i am very leery of the dealer's diagnosis at this point. *tr
I was driving down the road at 15mph and the tpms light and traction light flashed on the dash and than i started smelling smoke and hearing a loud high pitched noise, car stopped in middle of road creating a hazard, i got out quickly and popped the hood and smoke flew out of the alternator area. took car in and dodge is trying to charge 790.00 to fix this very common issue on the 3.6 2012 dodge charger se. *tr

My car has been dyeing randomly since i purchased it. i have taken it back to the dealer and they can find no codes and wipe the computer. the first time it happened, i had only had the car for a week. it happens when i am driving and there is nothing that is knocking any components. it coasts to a stop and i am able to start it right back up. no lights come on. i am very afraid and the dealer clearly doesn't want to help. *tr
I was traveling around 30 mph and as i was braking to stop for a traffic light the car turned off by itself. i was able to re-start after a minute. i almost rear ended the car in front of me as my brakes were disabled when the car shut off abruptly. *tr

I have a 2012 dodge charger rt hemi with 5.7l. the engine was damaged while driving through an intersection with about 5-6 inches of water left by a heavy rain. my husband was driving slow, following a procession of vehicles which all had successfully driven through. about 10 minutes later the engine started to make really loud noises. i had to call dodge roadside assistance and they towed it to the nearest dodge dealer. the dealer advised me the next day that on 2012 dodge chargers the air intake supply is located very low to the ground, where it allowed water to get pushed up and into the engine causing the engine failure. i feel that it should be covered by the warranty, because of a faulty design by the manufacturer. after speaking to some dodge dealers about the problem, they thought that the repairs would be a covered under the manufacturers warranty. the repair had to be put through my insurance for about $8000 and i've had to pay a $500 deductible. i'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences with water and engine failure after driving through rainwater. thank you in advance. *tr
