I purchased this vehicle in feb 2008, and over the last couple of months i've had to replace the alternator, battery, tension puller and various other parts. today 10/07/14 my car engine stalled as i was turning to drop my son off at daycare and almost created what could of been a deadly crash. i've called the dealership who sold me the car, who wired me to the dodge manufacturers, who then directed me to the chrysler company who then told me about the highway safety department. i've seen on various websites with similar complaints about the same exact issues i've had with this vehicle. why must the recall occur after the death of somebody and not now. i could have died today and found no resolution. i now longer feel that my car is safe nor do i want it anymore. but also feel that i don't want to trade it in and have somebody else die because of these malfunctions. i know noone will write back or respond but something has to be done. *tr

I started my car on sunday august 3, 2014 and the engine wouldn't turn over, after waiting a minute the car started. while driving the car would not go faster than 20 mph even with my foot completely on the petal. i took my car to oreilly auto parts and had the check engine light read. i had all new spark plugs (based off the check engine light reading) put in the vehicle and i'm still not able to drive over 20 mph. my car is now cutting off at the light and not the highest speed is 20 mph. i keep getting a lighting bolt message and check engine message even though all the codes have been cleared. *tr

My car horn goes off periodically and stays on when im driving or parked without me blowing it .also my seat belt light comes on every time i turn on the vehicle .when im driving the engine oil light comes on the wheel tighten up and the vehicle slows down and cuts completely off. i have been driving on busy streets when this happen as well as express ways. once it cuts off if i sit and a couple minutes the car may start back driving like nothing happen...usually. i sit for 30 minutes before it start up..i have taken it to mechanic and its something with the electrical system no codes are coming up when i went to place it on a machine..one mechanic said it my be the ignition not connecting ..can this be investigated because this car is doing things on its own the horn will go off when im parking driving and the fuse was checked. *tr

Was driving down the highway and noticed a delayed response when pushing down on the accelerator, moments later i was unable to accelerate and the car's electronic throttle control light appeared. the car was unable to go more then 15 mph. i had to have the car towed. i did not receive a warning before this happened however, i did notice my car stalling a little bit a day prior to this happening. i see i am not the only person with this problem, now i have to see how much money this is going to cost me. i am a college student and need my car but not this types of expense and safety risks it comes with. there are 125,000 miles on the car at this time. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate on its own. the contact applied the accelerator pedal and all of the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated when the speed reached 50 mph. the failure occurred numerous times. an independent mechanic was unable to diagnose the vehicle and recommended it be taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

The electronic throttle control and the engine light are constantly coming on and going off. this has been going on for two weeks now. i called a dodge dealer and they told me that the recall for this very same issue is not for my car. my vin supposedly is not in the sequence chrysler decided to recall. i don't know what to do. *tr

While i was driving home from work i was driving approx 50 mph and i lose power and my electronic control throttle light came on. i couldn't go faster then 5 mph and my rpm wouldn't pass 2,000 i pulled over on side of road turned off the car and try to restart but it would only run for a few seconds and cut out again. my home town mechanic said that the issue was the throttle body. the total cost in repair is roughly 500 dollars, and reading online there are more drivers out there having the same issue. i think dodge should do a recall on there 2008 dodge avengers and up. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact was driving approximately 70 mph when the vehicle suddenly stalled. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 107, 000.

My dodge avenger had a throttle control light illuminated on the dash when first starting the vehicle. thereafter, the car first would not go over 20 mph. later this problem progressed. the car only had a small amount of power. it could get up to 30-40 mph on flat areas but struggled to maintain 5 mph on inclines. the vehicle would also shake violently when the transmission was in gear but the vehicle was stopped do to engine vibrations. i am currently in the progress of replacing the avengers throttle body. normally i wouldn't report this, but when i called the dealer to order the part he informed me that they have been replacing a lot of these lately due to problems. *tr

Every time it rains and i drive the vehicle at stop light or a any complete stop. engine starts stalling. then cuts off. this issue has gone for about 4 months only when it rains. check engine comes on with code p2004( manifold runner bank 1 stuck open.) i have replaced the whole manifold with new parts i bought from dodge dealer. check engine light doesn't go away after trying to delete code. i was told that i had to go to dodge dealer to get it reprogram which will cost me. should have to pay to get reprogram if i exchange parts on the car. *tr

When proceeding from a complete stop, my car stalls. it is in the drive mode and is trying to go but can't. and it is starting to do it more often than not. i thought it may have had something to do with my brakes, since they were squeaking, but i have since gotten them repaired and the stalling continues. also sounds like something is gurgling under the hood. really don't even want to think about how much the repairs are going to cost. *tr

While driving 60 mph using cruise control, electronic throttle control indicator light blinks and engine loses power. however, difficulty in breaking and bringing to complete stop due to high rpm idle. after turning off and restarting engine, light is off and engine runs fine. incident has occurred three times, 6/29/13, 7/2/13, 7/7/13. *tr

Owned vehicle since 2009. everytime it rains the car will stall out when decelerating from various speeds. this has almost caused several accidents as drivers behind you expect you to begin to accelerate when traffic lights turn green, but instead you must drop the car into neutral or coast it to the side of the road to get it to restart. this has continued since i bought the car. it is a common problem that dodge apparently has not addressed according to www.mycarstats.com. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact attempted numerous times to start the ignition however, the engine would not respond. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where they stated that the engine would need to be replaced. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 07v473000 (engine and engine cooling) but was advised that the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

Electronic throttle control light came on and stayed flashing could not go over approx 15-25 mph. pulled over shut car off and restarted and worked fine for the 5 min drive i had to complete after it happened. 9 hours later while driving the throttle control light came on again with loss of power intermittently then stayed off for 5 min drive i had to complete. *tr

On 3/11/13, i reported to dodge case # [xxx] that when driving on wet / damp roads the car will stall out for no reason. this has happend to me while stopped at a light, slowing down going through a toll or even while turning in an intersection. i have felt it to start to stall while driving at 65 and have hit the gas to stop the problem. i phoned dodge who told me ... sorry there are no recalls. i then phoned my local dodge service department who immediately told me that yes they have had this problem in the past, the suggested is a sensor on the throttle or throttle body. the cost for repair is around $750. i happened to see there was another complaint on your site regarding this. because i feel as though this is a very serious danger hazard, i filed a complaint with the department of transportation # [xxx]who suggested i contact you. i think this is a very large concern and something that needs to be addressed immediately. i will be paying the money to get my vehicle fixed out of concern for my own and others safety. i drive the interstate everyday to work 65 - 75 mph and have to drive either in the right or left lane in case my car stalls. i was lucky that when my call stalled while trying to pull away from a red light i was not rear ended. i am hopeful you will see the sense of urgency and push dodge to do a recall. i do not think this should be the consumers espense. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Oil pan is rusting from inside out was told this by two different oil tech. can not find after market pan ...dealer only. *tr

While driving along freeway at 55 mph throttle light illuminated and engine was non reactive to gas pedal. after a few moment systems went away, but the starting the next day after that the engine was slow to respond to sccelerator and would hesitate and jump to accelerations. vehicle was taken to shop where throttle body and fuel system was cleaned. it worked fine till april 22, 2013 when vehicle was being driven the throttle light came back on and there was no acceleration at all to the car. car towed to garage where the throttle body had to be replaced to due failure. the milage was 130,153 and cost over $800. *tr

My 2008 dodge avenger has an electronic throttle control light flashing anytime i go over about 2000 rpm. at that point the car begins to stall and i have to put the car in park and restart. i am posting this because i have seen numerous other posts on dodge forums that explain the same problem. there seems to be a known defect with the throttle control. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds the thermostat temperature would rise, indicating that the vehicle was over heating. the vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. the technician advised that the heater coils or hoses needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and they advised that the components were no longer manufactured due to them being defective. as a result, the entire re-manufactured chamber that contains the hoses and coils needed to be use for the repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was approximately 123,000. the vin was unavailable.

Had to replace the cylinder 2 ignition coil and intake manifold. *tr

While driving on the interstate, my car suddenly dropped to 20mph and i had to pull off the road. i didn't have anywhere to pull over so i put my flashers on and drove as far right as i could until i had room to pull off the road. it was a very busy part of the interstate and i could have easily been ran over. i had to have it towed to the local dealership where they replaced and electric throttle. this is an issue dodge chrysler has been aware of for many years. it should be recalled. *tr

Since we first purchased this vehicle we have had problems with it stalling. at first we thought it was when it got wet but then it happened any time. it stalled out several times while driving on the high way. we have had it to the dealer several times the past few years. they have replaced the pvc valve and the map sensor stating both times this was causing it to stall out even though the light indicates it is the electronic throttle control. the dealer says there are a lot of things that can effect the etc and it is a guessing game unless the light comes on when they have it which of course it didnt. the car is dangerous to drive at this point. it continues to stall and there is no indication as to when it will happen. we could be going 10 miles an hour or 50 miles an hour. on one occasion when i had to have it towed, the tow truck driver showed me under neath that it had been towed before because something was bent. he didnt want me to think he did it. therefore there were issues with this car before i purchased it. i have emailed dodge on this matter as there are numerous complaints about this same issue and yet there are no recalls for it. i dont want anyone to be killed in this car so we are hoping the dealer will take it back as a trade. after all they sold it to us in this condition. *js

Shortly after i purchased my '08 dodge avenger i started having trouble w/the etc. it felt like the vehicle was jolting on acceleration or if i was at a steady high rate of speed (75-80 mph). the etc indicator came on. i contacted the dealer & informed them of the issue & my concern about the reliability of the vehicle. it was in & out of the shop 3 times in the 1st month of purchase for the etc. i was told it was a speed sensor yet my etc light was on after replacement. after having etc sensor cleaned & etc software flashed the problem appeared to go away. almost 2 years later the problem is back & worse. my etc indicator came on, vehicle stalled while idling, started jolting while accelerating & while maintaining a steady speed. it began revving at a complete stop w/full pressure applied to the break (vehicle would jump forward; i feared it would run itself into another vehicle). while slowing down it would rev & accelerate (creating the possibility of hitting another vehicle) w/out pressure on the gas pedal. it died while driving & wouldn't start restart. when it did start the etc was on & it wouldn't get past 1000rpm or above 20mph & had a very rough idle. a tune-up was done, etc sensor cleaned, air-intake system cleaned, & load test done to see if the battery was going bad. this vehicle is incredible unsafe to drive, after researching it appears that i am not the first person w/this issue. dodge needs to recall this throttle body, it's extremely dangerous. the repairs on this vehicle are extensive & the problem isn't fixed. advised replacing throttle body is the next step. told it wouldn't be a guaranteed fixed because the throttle body for this model appears a faulty & i would likely be dealing w/this problem for the length of ownership. recorded vehicle during some of incidents since i was told 1st time i was told "unable to duplicate, flashed software." *tr

Continuous engine and electronic and fuel and electrical issues with check engine light is activated with no resolve.

My daughter was driving home from work at 60mph and all of sudden the radio was cutting off and on and then the car started hesitating and then just cut off.after having it towed home found that the starter was burt up.replaced starter with new and car fired up and ran for about an hour when the new started that was just replaced also burt...this happened two more times...the car has been broke for two years now.i have it at an independent mechanic shop with another starter....they cannot find the short in the electrical system thats causing this starter to fry! the car starts fine...idles fine...until you drive it for about 3or 4 miles and then the starter starts burning....i can stop the car when i hear the starter winding and burning and take the key completely out and the starter stays stuck in starting position till it burns completely up....there definitely is an electrical issue that no one has heard of,and very hard to fix....updated 10/20/15 *bf the consumer stated the tipm was shorting out and causint the starter to burn. the vehicle was repaired. the ignition lock was also replaced because the key would stick upon starting the vehicle. updated 2/24/2016*js *cn

while driving my car, the electronic throttle control light came on and the car lost power and would not accelerate. i have researched this problem and it seems that it is a common occurrence. please recall now for safety reasons! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact stated that she heard a ticking noise coming from the engine when driving at various speeds. the contact took the vehicle to a local repair shop where he was advised that the bearings were wearing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to contact nhtsa to file a complaint. the failure mileage was 51,000.

While driving on highway, etc light came on signifying problem with throttle component. after doing research, it appears that this is an ongoing problem with dodge vehicles including the 2008 avenger. many statements online urged to open claim here as this can be an expensive problem that is not covered by warranty or recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact stated that while reversing, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact performed a diagnostic and located the failure at the 02 sensor. the contact replaced the 02 sensor however, the failure was not corrected. the vehicle continued to stall without warning. the contact performed a second diagnostic which located the failure at the throttle control. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not further repaired. the failure and current mileage was 94,306.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. while driving approximately 60 mph, the contact heard a ticking and knocking noise coming from the engine. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician stated that the engine would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

Motor mounts failed and this is the second time it has happened. dealer replaced front mount and said there was a change in the mounts due to problems but did not change the back mount, now the back mount has failed. i think that if dodge had to make a change in design of the mount due to problems they should have had to change both mounts when they changed the front one. this is just so they don't have to spend any more money on a car than they have to. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact stated that while driving 19 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure recurred numerous times and usually when it rained. the vehicle was taken to a dealer on two separate occasions but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the failure continued to recur. the contact was informed of a recall for the failure under nhtsa campaign number: 08v152000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 15,000 and the current mileage 80,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact stated that the air conditioner failed. the contact also stated that the engine caught on fire, in which he beleived was directly related to the air conditioning failure. the contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection where they advised that there were no failures found within the vehicle. the failure later recurred and the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 50,000.

Problem 1) the air bag lights would come on intermittently. problem 2) the engine stalls intermittently, especially on rainy days. problem 3) the front speakers sounded cracked or damaged and then over a short period of time the left speaker quit and the right speaker is majorly distorted. i might add this is not due to over cranking the stereo. this is due to cheap/inadequate quality speakers used. *tr

Rpms dip low and the engine revs up daily. car dies at stop lights or when making slow turns about monthly but getting more and more frequent. *tr

My 2008 dodge avenger first exhibited this problem in march 2011. i am the only owner and i bought it new. especially in wet weather but occasionally in other instances, the engine will shut off but all electrical equipment- the radio, lights, dashboard and a/c will remain on. this occurs when braking at a stop light or slowing to make a turn- usually when at low speed as when pulling into a driveway. i then must put the car in park, turn off the ignition then restart the car and it always restarts immediately. i have talked to the dealership i bought the car at more than once about the issue but they say they cannot recreate the problem and so can't diagnose it, but this issue only occurs periodically in wet conditions so being able to recreate it at the dealership is unlikely. i would estimate it has happened around 15 to 20 times in the past 4 years. i have seen recalls for other dodge and chrysler vehicles that sound similar but none for the avenger. i hope dodge will issue a recall on this malfunction as it sounds like there are many other people with the same problem. i feel like this could easily cause an accident. *tr

Takata recall recent and ongoing problem with my 08 dodge avenger is the airbag light has been coming on randomly, from start up and while driving. airbag has never deployed or no injuries to vehicle, has been on and off since last year. oil pressure light was also on, got the oil pressure sensor replaced, would start off from start up and would come on and off consteadly. front driversseatbelt also stopped retracting have recently had that changed as well. the tpms light has been on for about 2 years now, turns on at start up and stays on while driving. the engine light has also been on for awhile now too, from start up and while driving, just stays on, since a few months of vehicle purchase, was actually still making payments when i took it in for service for the engine light, came off and back on 2 months later, been struggling with it every since. just have learned to live with the engine light on and tpms light on as well. have had to change the alternator 3 times on this car already too. my car drives fine now, don't want to just keep ignoring the problem, would really like that fixed.
