Problems with 2013 Chevrolet Volt AIR BAGS

On average, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt starts to “feel” problems with the AIR BAGS and its various aspects after 70 977 miles.

Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2013 Chevrolet Volt

'service airbag' appears on display when front passenger steps out of vehicle. when passenger steps back in vehicle and fastens seatbelt airbag off displayed on overhead display indicating airbag would not work in the event of a crash for passenger. message usually disappears after cycling power on vehicle. also with lightweight items on seat (10 lbs or so) message also appears and does not automatically remove without cycling power.

Warning of faulty air bag on passenger side. warning light will come on at times even if passenger seat is empty. this warning comes on at times when the vehicle is in motion and at other times when stationary.

Airbag light is on. faulty seat sensor.

My passenger airbag light came on and it's been on for a while now. i went to a chevy volt forum on google and apparently it's a problem that my chevy volt owners are having so i think that this should be a safety issue since it involves the airbag.

The front passenger air bag frequently signals that service is required. occupied, unoccupied, bag of groceries, or occupied when occupant shifts around a little. similar reports indicate that service requires expensive calibration with little confidence in a lasting corrective outcome. can be stationary at beginning of trip, during trip while moving - no obvious correlation. happens more and more frequently, beginning at least a year ago.

My 2013 chevy volt has recently experienced some airbag warning light issues. the airbag light comes on for stretches of time and then disappears on its own. i drive 90% of the time without a front passenger and the airbag light has no pattern to when it comes on or goes off. it is completely random. so i stopped into my local dealer who stated there was no recall for this issue, so i went home and did some online research and found the following article: http://gmauthority.com/blog/2019/09/chevrolet-volt-under-investigation-for-airbag-warning-lights/ obviously there is an issue that chevy needs to address, so i am filing a formal complaint regarding this issue and am requesting some help as how to address this with chevrolet.

The passenger airbag sensor triggered a warning (vehicle in motion). took vehicle to dealer and they tried the typical loose connection check, water damage check, etc. removed sensor and tested it - not pulling any current, so must be bad and need replacement. total cost to replace $1,200!! if it's not replaced, airbags are disabled to protect against accidental deployment. i decided to pass and pretend that the car was built in the 1970s (ie, no airbags and just relying on seatbelts).

The service airbag light turns on intermittently. it only happens when something is either set on my passenger seat or if someone sits in that seat. it will happen at anytime, generally when going from park to driving.

Starting in august of 2019, our 2013 chevy volt air bag indicator light went on and off intermittently when the car was running. this usually happened while the car was moving, but sometimes when it was in park. it also happened whenever changing the speed using cruise control. we researched the problem and discovered it was related to the sensor in the passenger seat. when we did, we found that there are many other mentions of this problem online (especially given that there aren't many models of this car on the road), and that the solution is to replace the sensor in the seat. we took the car to a chevy dealer to assess the problem, and were told that even though it is a safety issue, that it was not covered under warranty. we were also told that when the sensor does not work properly, that the airbags likely won't inflate in the case of an accident. therefore, we asked to schedule the repair, but were told the part could not be ordered due to the gm strike. in late december, we heard from the dealer that the part was in so we had it fixed today at the cost of $755.05 we are very upset about the high cost for the repair since this is a known issue with this particular sensor, and a huge safety hazard.

Service air bag system message comes up on dash briefly and goes away again quickly. after some research online, i'm finding this is most likely cause by the passenger seat airbag sensor or seat occupancy sensor. it has only happened in our volt when i had a front seat passenger so this makes complete sense. this is a very common issue on 2012, 2013 and 2014 chevy volts at least and should be recalled and repaired by gm. this is a safety issue. the repair is around $800 and that should not be the case with a safety issue on many vehicles u see 100k miles. we have 81k on ours. i saw the issue happened to other volts in my research as low as 27k miles. when this happens, i have just started the vehicle, it is stationary and people are getting into seats and buckling belts. longest the message has come on was about 45sec with most occurrences more like 10-15 sec before message clears. this were all in suburb type settings and not the first use of the day for the vehicle but rather later on in day second or more use for the day.

The car regularly gets an airbag light relating to the passenger seat presence sensor. the airbag light will randomly come on and then turn off as i drive.

Same problem most everyone else is having. service airbag message comes on frequently and red airbag light stays on. started at around 85-90k miles. and no accidents. this is a safety issue and there needs to be a recall. how many complaints will it take? its a great car otherwise. ford is much more proactive with safety recalls than gm.

(chevy volt 2013) a warning message "service airbags" intermittently shows. the car has not been involved in accidents. it appears to be a very common issues among chevy volt owners (including 2 people in my family who own the same car model) the warning shows while driving and disappears after a few seconds.

Continuously receive a "service airbag system" warning. began happening for no apparent reason. warning stays on all the time (as soon as vehicle is started). dealership investigated and determined that the passenger side seat sensor for the airbag must be replaced, at a high cost (~$800). without this repair, it is possible that the passenger side air bag may not deploy in the event of an accident (sensor does not indicate that someone is seated on passenger side, so only driver's side may deploy).

I started receiving a passenger airbag warning light on my dash. it seemed to happen mostly if i set something on the passenger seat and then removed it. i took it to the dealer and they said a sensor in the seat needed to be replaced and it was $1100

Service airbag warning when passenger seat unoccupied. goes off when occupied.

I get a service airbag warning. i receive the message on startup and at random intervals the car will chime, and display the "service airbag" message. a red icon of a person wearing a seatbelt with an airbag deployed is displayed on the instrument panel and remains on, at all times that the car is on. i don't know the exact date this first occurred. i have owned the car for about 8 months. i bought it from a chevrolet dealer.

The check airbag indicator light and the passenger airbag go on and off repeatedly even if a passenger is in the seat. the passenger presence system has failed at 70,000 miles. it happens whenever the vehicle is being driven making it unsafe to have a passenger in the front seat. i have read several gm and volt blogs and this seems to be a common problem with 2012 and 2013 volt.

Airbag weight sensor issues on passenger side

Passenger airbag sensor, being triggered intermittently. sensor is contained within the passenger seat. sensor is question is called a passeneger presence system module.

Just paid $975 to have the passenger air bag sensor replaced on my 2013 chevy volt. i was informed by the gm volt thread that this a manufacturing issue with the chevy volts and is happening to many volt owners.

My service airbag light has been coming on for months and i dont know why. i use this car for commuting and nothing has been done to the seat or car that would cause this service light to turn on. i have read on a few forums where this airbag light has came on for a few people and its leading to a sensor fix which can cost up to $1000. has gm issued a recall on this problem since its a safety issue?

Component designed to detect passenger sitting on the passenger seat has failed causing the airbag to remain off. dealer says the passenger presence detection module in the seat cushion has failed. i had a similar issue with vw which was a recall, however gm is not recalling these faulty vehicles. this could cause an airbag to not inflate during a crash.

I have less than 40,000 miles in this vehicle. at approximately 35000 miles the warning light went on saying the airbag sensor was not working. i understand that a case has been opened and i would like to add my name to that case.

I am getting an airbag warning light caused by a faulty passenger presence module. if i have a passenger riding with me, the warning light will go on and off sometimes caused by hitting bumps in the road. when the light is on though, it says the passenger airbag is off which is a very big safety concern. the vehicle has never been in a wreck or had any liquid spilled on the seat.

The airbag sensor stopped working causing the passenger airbag to be turned off.

Passenger seat unoccupied will alert airbag sensor warning display

Service air bag warning light came on. took it in to dealer who reported the air bag sensor for the passenger seat is no longer working. replacement plus labor quoted at $1000. this car is a 2013, the air bag sensor should not break so quickly.

The passenger airbag wont work because the sensor in the seat is broken. chevy is charging over $1,000 to repair. there has never been an accident. it happened out of nowhere. when reading online this is happening to a lot of people and the repair cost is extremely high for something that is completely chevy's fault.

No unusual activity. no spills or other occurrence that could cause sensor to fail. passenger seat presence detection sensor has failed. car now reports a "service airbag" warning and has disabled the passenger side airbag because of it. this is a life-threatening error caused by a simple sensor failure that is showing a high failure rate with countless complaints on the internet. most people are not repairing this sensor as it cost $1000 to $2000 to repair through the dealers that are not discounting or covering the cost of repair under warranty.

Service airbag light coming on intermittently upon front passenger entering or leaving vehicle. service light clears and reappears at random for several trips after this occurs.

The passenger side airbag sensor is failing. the car is not that old. we have had no spills in the car. but the airbag sensor is coming on. we paid the dealer $180 to look at it, but they found nothing wrong. now the sensor light is coming on every time we start the car. it is out of warranty, and fixing will cost up to $1500. that is crazy. many other people have had this problem with their chevy volts.

Passenger front seat occupancy sensor malfunctions which triggers the air bag warning light and disables the passenger front air bags. this randomly occurs when no one is in the seat and it will happen if the seat is occupied and the person in the seat moves

Faulty passenger air bag sensor after warranty

While in motion my car sporadically displays "service air bag system." upon diagnosis, dealer stated the passenger presence module needed to be replaced. this car is only 5 years old with 77,000 miles. seems like a serious safety hazard for this item to be failing. researching chevrolet volt owner forum yields numerous cases of this same issue.

Passenger airbag warning light on 2013 volt started going on and off a few months after purchasing the car. continued to get more frequent over time until it stayed on consistently. took to gm dealer on 9/5/18 at 37,944 mileage and paid $130 for diagnosis. dealer stated the passenger present sensor needed replacement, the repair was out of warranty and quoted an additional $1082.26 to repair. since it was a safety component of the car, i complained to gm management directly under a case#, but they refused to repair on 10/12/18. still a serious concern today at 54,183 mileage. documentation available if needed.

Service airbag message is on. common problem for this car. the previous owner replaced an airbag sensor, and the problem has returned.

Passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor intermittent function at 52k miles. would disable passenger air bag randomly whether moving or stationary. had dealer serviced, which replaced passenger seat occupancy sensor, for $1086.

Air bag passenger seat occupancy sensor failure. when there is no passenger in the seat the air bag warning lite comes on. when an adult is in the seat the light does not come on unless the person moves around, then it comes on and then resets itself.

My 2013 chev volt service air bag light comes on frequently. the dealership quoted me over $800 to fix it. i have read online others have this problem. i want my car to be safe. this should be a safety recall.

A service airbag message randomly appears on the dashboard and goes away after a few minutes. the message appears at random with no apparent cause.

I would like to file a complain regarding a "service air bag" light present in my car. the light turns on suddenly regardless a passenger is present or not. it happens when the car is in motion or parked. i took the car to be inspected and the codes given were: b0081 and b0074 (passenger presence malfunction) the technician explained to me that if the part was not changed the passenger airbag may not deploy in case of an accident. my car has not been involved in an accident; it has not been exposed to any liquids that might have caused damage. the estimate provided and repairs were $980 (part only: $500) plus tax. so far, i was very satisfied with the quality of this car but it is very disappointing that something that is not negligence of the driver is not covered in the manufacturing warranty. upon stumbling with this issue i realized that it is a common malfunction of this car from other owners as well. i would kindly ask you to take into consideration this issue and investigate it so that the company can issue a recall and customers no longer have to choose between a voluntary repair or not having a passenger airbag in case of an accident in such modern car.

The service airbag light is on, and the dealership says that it is the passenger side seat 'passenger presence module' that needs to be replaced, at a cost of over $800. the car is a 2013 with 79k miles, so is out of warranty, but i just find it really disappointing that this kind of manufacturer issue is not covered by the manufacturer through a recall or factory warranty. this isn't an issue of routine maintenance, and the car has never been in an accident, so it just does not seem like something i should have to pay $800 for.

Driving, so spills on seats, service airbag light goes on. $800. fix at the local chevrolet dealer. why isn't there a recall on this fuse? i can't afford to fix it.i just purchased the car a year ago. no accidents, nothing amiss otherwise, love the car, gave up my newer prius to get this car.

Service air bag warning light is on. took it to the dealer, they said it was the passenger seat sensor, and would cost $800 to fix. the warning light was intermittent, but now it is on all the time. and the warning beeping sound continues almost constantly while driving the car. very annoying. the air bag is not on even when a passenger is in the front seat. very dangerous situation in the event of an accident, and should be recalled and fixed by gm. i don't want to take passengers in the car because i fear for their safety. the car has 120k miles on it. the issue is present in all driving and parked situations. i have read on many forms online, that this is a pretty prevalent issue with many volt owners and is in definitely need of some attention. the issue started back in the beginning of 2018 and is still a problem as of jan 2020. the cost to fix the issue is too prohibitive for me.

Passenger pressence module sensor gets detoriated when the passenger seat moves back and forth. basically ruining the too short wiring connecting to the sensors. this makes the airbag nondeployable. the computer thinks no one is sitting there, essentially. this occurred while driving and goes on and off, but has stayed on consistently.

Service air bag warning during or shortly after someone sits in front passenger seat. also see the passenger air bag light illuminates "off" for extended period. dealer states it is not able to duplicate the issue. has been happening for the past year. believe this is a known defect, and also a safety hazard, as air bag may not deploy in a collision.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet volt. the contact stated that the air bag wiring connection under the seat had a short, which caused the sensor mat not to function. henderson chevrolet (240 n gibson rd, henderson, nv 89014, 702-558-2438) was notified. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the manufacturer issued three tsbs for the air bags. the failure mileage was not available.

There is a capacitive field detector in the passenger seat also called a passenger position sensor. instead of a simple buckle detector this part has failed in my car at 76,000 miles and the affect is that the passenger airbag is disabled. the part is apparently around 800$ as the entire seat assembly must be replaced. the indicator on the dash simply says to service the airbags. it may be anecdotal due to the intermittent nature of the failure but it seemed to clear when i accelerated and fail upon breaking, slowing down or going down hill. this seems like the exact opposite of when you'd want your airbags to become disabled.
