We have classified the 314 complaints from 2010 Chevrolet Traverse about STEERING into the following categories.
At speeds of 40 mph and slower, the power steering is unresponsive and stops working. this problem is recurring. most notably when turning onto side roads after slowing down, and also when making turns into parking lots and parking spaces. this steering problem is a hazard to not only the vehicle driver/occupants, but as well as other drivers on the road. *tr
Driving at low speeds while turning it becomes very difficult to turn. lose power steering. *js
While traveling below 15 mph the power steering stops working and requires a strong effort to turn the wheel. the problem has not gone away and is getting more frequent. i took it to the dealer on on 8 august 2013 and was told that i would have to replace the power steering pump and the rack and pinion (cost approximately $1,500). i asked if this was a common problem and the service tech said know. now i have found out is is a common problem. *tr
During slow turns(e.g.) slow turns and when parking the power steering temporarily quits making it almost impossible to make turns. *tr
Having the same problem everyone else is having with steering. when going slow & turning or backing up it seems like power steering kicks off & then comes back on. started happening after it reached 70,000. *tr
My 2010 chevy traverse lt loses steering power in situations when i am slowing down and initiating a turn or when maneuvering in a driveway or parking lot where short turns are required. the wheel becomes extremely difficult to turn. i am concerned that it will put me in a dangerous situation since there is no telling when it will happen. it does not happen every time i drive, but it has become progressively more common. steering fluid is full and there is no evidence of leaks. given gm's recent history in stonewalling necessary recalls, i hope they make this right or a recall is required before anybody is injured or killed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that the power steering failed intermittently. the contact also mentioned that the steering wheel seized causing the vehicle to become difficult to maneuver. the failure continued to become progressively worse over time. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
I began to notice noise while steering and then difficulty steering, as though the power steering wasn't working. i had some previous undiagnosed leaks on the vehicle while under warranty, but those were never resolved. when i brought the vehicle in to have the steering checked, i was told i needed a repair that would cost $2000, and of course, it was no longer under warranty. i went to another auto shop who estimated a lower cost for the repair, the repair was made, and the difficulty steering began again. 24 hours after the supposed "fix", the car caught on fire after my husband pulled into a parking space. it was a total loss. *tr
Steering rack binding and not allowing vehicle to turn. several near accidents when turning onto streets or into parking lots near other cars as the car will be stuck on a path unless driving physically is capable of pulling steering wheel through the bind. *tr
When slowing down or doing maneuvers at slow speeds the power steering impedes steering. it feels like it is actually fighting you. it is a hazardous problem and may cause an accident. doing a y-turn is almost impossible due to the steering issue. we are taking ours to a dealership to have it repaired. *tr
Our 2010 chevy traverse has recently started having problems with power steering in low speed conditions. it has nearly caused us to wreck on multiple conditions. at speeds above 10-15 miles per hour we have not had any problems. i started doing some research (http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2010/chevrolet/traverse/steering/problem.aspx), for example and discovered that there have been thousands of complaints on this same issue and gm doesn't seem to recognize it as an issue that needs recalled. it has cost anywhere from $500-$1200 to repair depending upon geographic location and the severity of the problem. please pass this info along to the proper authorities to look into a nation wide recall. *tr
I have power steering failure with 91000 miles. the dealer told me the tsb for this isssue would cost me about 1300 dollars.. since there is whine evident and the pitch changes with vehicle speed. at idle, you need to be like a gorilla to turn the wheel, but once you gas it, some assist is provided, this is not the first issue with this car. a/c line from compressor to condensor broken,,, $700.00. water pump leaking,,, drivetrain warranty. steerring wheel shimmy at various speeds since about 20k mile, " no problem found" even though it has been in several times and they never seem to duplicate the issue. .drive shaft seal leaking. waranty covered that one.this is our second traverse.. our 2009 with 6300 miles had a very rough idle and check engine light on.called onstar for diag. they were able to see faults, but could not get specific results for some reason. thety asked if i neede a tow, but the dealer was only 2 miles from me, i started to drive there. at the last lights before turning into the shop, it appearred as though i had an engine fire and could not even see out the windshield. was told that the coil feel out of bracket on fire wall and dropped onto exhaust.. since when does this car have a coil on the fire wall. then i found out the real issue. on of the pistons was disinagrated and completly gone. chevy wanted to repair the traverse. every computer component needed to be replaced as well. they started the work and ordered all the parts . after 30 days wernt by and they still had no engine fron chevy, i called them on lemon law. they took possesion of our 09 and replaced it with a 2010. we had to come out of pocket for about 1100 dollars and also were denied the interior protectio package that we purchased with our 09. loss of 1300. i have a very poor opinion of chevy's recent products and we have been a chevy family for 4 different . loosing faith. *tr
Power steering fails in turns at low speed, or when trying to park. can still "horse the wheel if sufficient strength and realize what is happening. has steadily gotten worse (occurs more often), but i'm not fixing it till completely fails. *tr
Steering makes a loud grinding noise and steering gear failure. delay and binding up when trying to turn at low speeds. dealer confirmed repair bulletin exists but general motors denied warranty repair. found 40+ ntsb/nhtsa issues with chevrolet traverse steering. this is a safety concern affecting the steering ability of the vehicle. new steering gear, housing, hoses, and fluid change to dexron is required. i need help please! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, there was a loss of power steering without warning. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that both the power steering pump and the rack and pinion would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Intermittently, my 2010 traverse's steering system locks up when turning at low speeds. sometimes the problem will not allow the turn to be completed. my 16 year old child, who is a driver's education student, was driving the vehicle when the problem presented and nearly had a head on collision due to the fact that she could not complete a left hand turn that she was making. in researching this problem, i notice lots of posts of the same problem with the same vehicle. this is a manufacturer's defect and should be addressed by the company. *tr
The steering console sounds like it is rubbing or catching. doesn't feel like the power steering is going out but definitely rubbing sound. *tr
Noted power steering fluid in driveway. had it diagnosed at the dealership as a leak from the steering column. was told the steering gear assembly had to be replaced at a $1300 charge. i've researched the issue and found many, many complaints regarding this same problem. i have also read complaints that various repairs had been made to solve the steering problems with other traverses, but still problems with the steering system occur. i'm concerned my steering may go out entirely during travel and end up in a fatality. a recall should be required to rectify this issue. *tr

The vehicle is hard to turn at low speeds. took it to the dealer and their diagnoses was that the rack and pinion needed changing at a cost over $700.00. had new rack and pinion installed at a mechanics shop for less. *tr
At speeds below 20 mph the steering locks up. *tr

For months and months i heard a noise from the steering section...like it needed oil. we checked the fluid and noticed it was low. we have to repeat the fluid every month or so. i was driving and all of a sudden my steering became stuck. now i need $1000+ repairs for a vehicle that is only 3 years old w/ 40,000 miles. this is unfair. *tr
Car began to emit a groan noise while turning and only got worse from there. today leaking p/s fluid a plenty. dealership relates need for new power steering pump and steering rack along with an alignment. total estimated cost: $1625.00. *tr
At slow speeds, you lose power steering when trying to park in parking spots, turning curves, and turning off onto other streets. very dangerous driving when you are expecting to turn and can't turn because of the power steering failure. this should be looked into before someone in injuried or even killed. this does not occur all the time, but occurs too often when you least expect it. i've just purchased vehicle and did not know about the problem until after i had the vehicle about a week. *tr
At low speeds, the power steering fails. when turning into parking spots or trying to make turns onto other streets or roads, you lose all power steering making it difficult to turn. i just recently bought the vehicle and didn't notice the problem until about a week later. it does not occur all the time, but too often when you least expect it. *tr
We were driving in a parking lot when we first noticed the steering going out. it was minimal at first, and my husband checked the power steering fluid. he saw nothing wrong with the levels. as the months have continued the steering has gotten worse, almost to the point where i can no longer drive it. there are multiple occasions, the latest is today, where i was going on the off ramp to my exit and it went out as i was rounding the corner. i have to keep a tight grip on the steering wheel to control the turn. it came back in quickly and i was about 2 inches from hitting the barrier wall and crashing. i also had my two toddlers in the car with me. with so many complaints why hasn't something been done? like a recall? i have contacted my cousin who works for gm to see if there is anything that can done and have referred him to this site. *tr
Loud whining noise while turning, and occasional difficult turning period. contatced chevy dealership and they quoted $1000, repair when i explained the issue. took to mechanic who flushed the power steering fluid but the issue persisted. i've seen numerous complaints about this issue on line , it has to be addressed by the manufacturer before someone is seriouly hurt or killed. *tr
My 2010 chevy traverse is very hard to turn and is now making a horrible noise and is messing with the gas intake... it is very hazardous not being able to turn when you need to turn. i have researched it online and found an abundant of people with the same problem. *tr
Vehicle had been parked in garage when we noticed pink fluid under car. took it to local repair shop where they diagnosed the power steering gear valve solenoid is leaking. have to take it to dealer for repair. dealer has already replaced steering gear input housing (10-29-12) and said they had 4 traverses in with the same problem that week. *tr
Our 2010 chevy traverse required an entirely new power steering system after 65k miles and 3 years. it required $2500 worth of repair; a pump, gear, hose, clamp, and fluid. our car was one of 4 traverses and 2 acadia's at century chevrolet dealership requiring the exact same repair at the same time. also, contacting other mechanic's in the area in an attempt to price compare, we were told this is a known design flaw in these vehicles within the auto repair industry which gm has yet to do anything about. the internet is rampant with a multitude of related stories of power steering issues in these vehicles. a recall should be required of gm to rectify this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the power steering assist failed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the power steering pump would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure and current mileage was 43,355.
I bought this vehicle in october 2012. after driving for a while i noticed a funny sound coming from the steering wheel. i took it to for an oil change and was informed my power steering was leaking. i called the dealer and informed them of the issue. due to having the vehicle over 30 days they would not repair it they stated i could use the extended warranty i purchased. i was not happy with the decision and they paid half of the deductible. so some months later i started having issues with turning corners and into my parking lot. the steering wheel would lock up and i had to use everything in me to turn the wheel. this is very concerning and scary. it is almost a year and i have had 2 recalls on this vehicle. the headlight has blown out. the interior lights have stopped working and i am not happy with this chevy traverse. i called chevrolet customer service and they said before i talk with someone i have to take the truck to a dealer and have them diagnose the problem and i have to pay for the diagnosis. they also said that they are not aware of the problem and there is no warranty at this time for the power steering only for the 2 recalls. i think we should file a class action against chevrolet. this is ridiculous that we are all having the same issues and there has not been a recall yet. lives are at risk with these types of problems. *tr
Intermittently the car's power steering will not respond. it is usually at slow speeds in parking lots but at times at slower speeds in traffic. my wife and young daughter (16) can barely steer the car when this failure occurs and have had some close calls trying to steer the car in close traffic. we called the dealer (winchester, va) and the service department spokesman acted like he was oblivious to this problem and wanted us to bring it in. this is happening to thousands of gm cars and they along with nhtsa need to do the right thing, a recall, regardless of the governments stake in gm. toyota would have already been recalled. please do not wait for a death toll. *tr
Our 2010 chevy traverse had about 60,000 miles on it when it would be very, very hard to steer at slow speeds while parking and turning. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering assist failed without warning. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000 and current mileage was 96,000.

2010 chevrolet traverse. consumer states steering gear housing had to be replaced *tgw
Vehicle looses power steering at low speeds while turning on multiple occasions. if turning into parking spot, into traffic, or performing a u-turn steering gets extremely difficult nearly causing multiple incidents with no warning. afraid to let my wife drive this vehicle much longer since it's designed for families with children. unacceptable when looking online and finding multiple customers having same issue. *js
Original owner; starting at approximately 39,000miles on odometer, driving at low speeds, at or below 40mph power steering inoperable. very difficult to steer when power steering goes out. *tr

Car at slow speeds feels like power steering has gone out, hard to control going around corners...have seen many other complaints on same thing but looks like chevy doesn't know what to do....chevy vehicles are crap and will never buy another one...get it fixed chevy before someone kills themselves. *tr
Whenever i pull in or out of a parking lot my steering is just like it has no power steering fluid this happens at a low speeds also turning a corner so that's why it is noticeable when i'm parking or at a corner. *tr
