We have classified the 314 complaints from 2010 Chevrolet Traverse about STEERING into the following categories.
Multiple problems with power steering. 9/30/2010 brought vehicle in for grinding noise & vibration, gear box assembly indicated as problem, replaced steering gear. 10/12/11- noise when turning: replaced spring & rack, 10/18/11 vibration when turning, power steering pump determined as culprit , replaced pump; 5/17/12 steering making grinding noise, no fluid... replaced power steering fluid; 5/19/2012 grinding noise when turning wheel, again no fluid, inlet clamp loose, resecured & added fluid again, 6/22/2016, intermittently when go to turn power steering like a manual steering, no power steering fluid, checked, powering steering pump & steering gear determined to be cause, $ 464 for repairs! if my younger driving age children were driving, would have caused an accident.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving 5 mph and making a right turn, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 152,000.
June 2016, approx. 114,000 mi - felt a lurch in stop & go traffic; flashed "service stabilitrak," "service traction control," "backup alerts = off". the check engine light appeared. a few miles down the road when traffic sped up, i realized i only had one gear and could not accelerate above 60mph. a serious problem on the interstate! several hours later, the check engine light remained on, but the car drove normally -- straight to the repair shop, where it was deemed to need $2400 in transmission repair due to the following fault codes: p182e & c0561. they will replace the transmission mode shift sensor and the transmission control module. the mechanic also informed us that we will eventually need a $700 repair for the control arms in the rear suspension -- ge has corrected a known fault in the parts. all this is on top of a $3000 repair done in april 2015 at 92,500 mi. for known steering defects. in that case, as the traverse warmed up, the power steering got hard to turn. gm repaired part of the problem at no cost, replacing power steering pump and gear housing. another mechanic completed the replacement of the rack and pinion assembly that was also part of the problem. these are both substantial defects and repairs needed in a vehicle that was expected to last much longer before needing more than routine maintenance.
Power steering stiffens when parking or going around curbs at low speeds. almost hit vehicles in a parking garage caused by this issue. this issue has been occurring since the traverse had 52k miles.
The power steering stops working, especially at lower speeds. when making a turn, the steering stiffens up and make it very hard to turn. this is very dangerous as several times i have had to come to a complete stop to avoid going into the other lane. then the steering recently gave out completely on my way to work.
We have owned this vehicle for 2 years and it has been in the dealership for steering related issues 4 times. at low speeds the power steering stops working, making it hard to make the slightest turn. more than once we have almost been hit by oncoming traffic at the end of our driveway because we couldn't turn sharp enough. at first the dealership said it was part of a recall, but after fixing it 3 times they decided the problem wasn't part of the recall and charged us $1400. one week later and the car was doing the same thing. we are taking the vehicle in again. i have filed an official complaint with chevy, we'll see if that does any good.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while making a turn and when the vehicle was in motion, the power steering failed. the dealer and the manufacturer were notified and indicated that there was no recall to provide a solution. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 169,325.
While driving at a lower speed and usually while turning into a parking space, my steering wheel locks up and does not turn. this happens while turning both directions, left and right. i literally have to plan my trip to my destination according to my steering wheel. i can not park between cars in a parking lot. i no longer allow to my daughter to drive me car due to the steering problem. i then began reading all the complaints concerning this issue. i have always been a chevrolet customer, along with my parents. chevrolet should have issued a recall months ago according to all documented problems. i also read there is a court case on this issue. i will need to get my steering fixed as i no longer trust my car driving and parking. i was hoping there was a recall on this steering issue.
2010 chevrolet traverse transmission problem while driving the the vehicle its not changing gears at times and it slips. at times when it does not slips, it starts to make a loud muffler sound while driving and my foot is on the gas and its like forcing the vehicle to move. in order to stop the sound and slip, i sometime have to place car on park and then put on drive to re adjust. sometimes it works and sometime it does not. took the car to my local mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and state that there were alot of codes for the transmission which is unusual for a transmission that new(for a 2010). i then contacted a chevy dealer who state that there is no complaint regarding transmission. i believe this vehicle is unsafe to drive. please help as i have two young children that is on the vehicle with me on a daily basis. this issue sometimes happen and some time it does not. the steering wheel of the vehicle also makes a sound when turning. the ac blows, but the from vent only blow air from the bottom and not through the vents. i don't know if this is part of the issue or a different issue.
At slow speeds it becomes hard to steer , and it is very dangerous.
I took the vehicle into the gm dealership for an unrelated problem and the technician "discovered" a faulty/leaking steering gear box....totally replaced at a cost of $1386. now, following online research, i realize that this is a very common problem and gm would appear to be circumventing reporting and a recall by having individuals "pay for the fix".....i want to document this complaint and my personal encumberance of the repair costs....the discussion online points to a common and dangerous problem that we had not "yet" experienced, but according to the technician, may have had a dangerous encounter at any time!
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that the power steering rack and the power steering pump failed and needed to be replaced. the details were not available. in addition, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of failure. the failure mileage was 75,827.
The vehicle had been making a high pitched squeaking noise for about a week but only when i slowed to a stop and began to speed up. today as i slowed to make a turn the power steering went out. because i was about thirty miles from home i had no choice but to drive it home. when i was on main roads going about 55mph, the problem seemed to be going away, but each time i slowed to make a turn, the vehicle's power steering would go out. i went online and found that this was a common complaint for chevy traverse owners and that they all seem to be occurring around 70,000 miles. with all the controversy over the millions of gm vehicles recalled for power steering problems resulting in accidents i am very upset that these vehicles were not among them.
I was pulling into a parking place when the car just would not turn. the power steering went completely out. i almost hit the car already parked and the gentleman getting out of the passenger side of the car. i profusely apologized and backed the car out of the general area. i then moved to the back of the parking lot to try to figure out what had happened. when the car operated at normal speed, there was no issue with the steering. when the car operated at the speed of approximately 5 mph, the power steering went completely out. when i looked on the internet, i saw the many people who were experiencing the same hazard. i am extremely happy that my wife was not driving our four children in the car. at the time, i was driving with three of the children and i was extremely shaken by the entire situation. i am hoping that someone can explain why a defect such as this was not recalled or, at the least, placed on a public knowledge bank. it is a very dangerous issue that should be public knowledge. i seriously think the public should have knowledge of this coming from the actual dealership with, at the least, a phone call or letter informing of the hazard....updated 09/22/15 *bf updated 12/05/2017*cn
The problem with this vehicle is loss of power steering when driving at low to speed especialy when turning in either direction. i started having this problem at around 80 k miles and its getting progressively worse. now it does this when not driving. i took it to the dealer where i purchaced this vehicle., jba chevrolet in glen burnie , md. i was told that chevrolet was not coveing the cost of the power steering pump or the rack and pinion even though there are hundreds of travese owners with this same problem . this is truely a safety issue , not knowing when you could lose the ability to steer .!!!! and in my case at any speed.
When attempting to steer/turn at low level of speeds usually less than 5mph the steering is very stiff and requires a lot of effort to turn the vehicle. i also recently felt my steering lock up while merging onto the freeway going at a rate of 50-60 mph.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving 15 mph and approaching a stop sign, the power steering seized without warning. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 124,046.
While turning the power steering feels very heavy and difficult to turn and makes a noise
When making left or right turns the steering wheel will stiffen making completing turns very difficult. a couple of times i had to make complete stops to avoid hitting vehicles or going into a ditch. i also noticed the steering stiffening while making slight turns while driving at normal highway speed. this is seriously putting my family in danger.
Chevy recalled two parts in the traverse line, a power steering pump and another part related to the steering. recall number 14329. when these parts fail they can cause the rack and pinion to also fail. i have mentioned this to numerous technicians and they all back this claim up. our power steering completely failed and chevy replaced the parts but this failure caused the rack and pinion to fail which chevy is taking no responsibility to replace.
Slow speeds the steering becomes choppy and unresponsive
I brought my 2010 chevy traverse in to the dealer for repair work. i previously had received a service bulletin 14329a which was for a defective power steering pump. during the course of the service, the dealer let me know that due to the power steering pump being defective, the steering rack pump was also needing repair. gm took care of the power steering pump but not the rack pump as the rack pump did not have a formal service bulletin out yet. it is disappointing to me that this would not be taken care of by gm as the power steering pump being defective caused the rack pump to also be. i would like to see a service bulletin come out on the steering rack pump as many, many others are in the same situation as myself.
The vehicle experiences loss of power steering at low speeds. chevrolet issued a special warranty for the power steering pump, however when taken to the dealer, the vehicle also had a cracked steering rack. a quick internet search showed that hundreds of other drivers are experiencing the same problem. chevrolet is only offering to fix one component of a faulty steering system, leaving drivers to foot the bill for the other faulty parts.
Steering wheel is getting very hard to turn at times becomes stuck and will not move and continues to happen
My vehicle is just over 60,000 miles. it needs a new power steering pump (recalled) and now a new steering rack. the vehicle is very difficult to turn in parking lots and on the roads. i thought it just needed a power steering flush and so that was completed at 50,000 miles. that was after i had repaired a 700 engine coolant hose.
2010 chevy traverse lt awd has developed a consistent whining noise while running. chevy dealer investigated and says the steering rack needs to be replaced because it's leaking. car makes unusual noise when turning and is sometimes hard to steer around corners. no mention of pump being involved. cost estimate of $1500 to replace steering rack. internet search revealed similar problems with many other 2010 traverse vehicles. still looking for additional info. have not received any recall notice from gm and dealer says not covered. repairs not done yet, investigating options. *tr
Took vehicle in to get check engine light issue looked at (timing belt issue, not a recall, but covered by chevy). while they had the engine tore down, they informed us that there was a fluid leak with the power steering gear and was going to cost $1,400 to fix as it was not covered under warranty. this was hard to believe given that the car only has 34,000 miles. chevy subsequently reduced the cost to $900. we were also told that chevy had covered the repair cost for some vins for this same issue; but our vin was not covered. looking at posts on the internet; this issue can lead to a loss of power steering while moving, very concerning and there should be a recall. fortunately, this issue was identified in the shop and not while we were driving. *js
The date on this complaint is the date that things got worse, but the problem has been ongoing for the past 6 months. i was driving on the backroads and slowed to pull into a neighborhood and as i turned the wheel shook violently and groaned very loud. this happened about 6 or 7 times within a 4 hour period but has since went back to the moaning when turning. for the past 6 months, whenever i slow to turn, my wheel moans/whines as if my power steering if failing. i heard of a recall and talk to my local dealer. they said gm would not replace the part unless it actually fails. this is ridiculous, all i can say is if my steering fails and someone in my family gets hurt from loss of power steering, gm will be first on my list to sue. *tr
The initial problem started in dec. 2014 while turning at low speeds while parking especially when it was very cold out. the power steering seems to go out and it is really hard to turn. this happened every once in a while. i took it to a chevy dealer because i received a tsb in the mail. the chevy dealer said that the problem was not covered under the bulletin because my steering gear is leaking which is not part of the tsb. my power steering fluid is still full. cost to repair would be $1701.09. my vehicle is exhibiting the same problems as two tsb but the dealer still says it is not covered. now in april 2015 the problem is happening all the time even while driving and turning at normal speeds. this is a huge safety issue and should be addressed by chevy. i don't understand how a known safety issue is not covered! *tr
I have a 2010 chevy traverse which has a problem with the power steering components. chevrolet has issued a recall on the cheap part, the power steering pump but does not cover the expensive part of the defect which is the rack and pinion/steering gear. why, because they don't care if people crash and they make more money with the steering gear in repair work. if you own a traverse and hear the whining noise from the steering wheel don't let the dealer tell you its no big deal. make them change the power steering pump and the rack and pinion before you lose steering control like everyone else with a traverse. even better, don't buy a chevy. now that i am aware of this issue and know that basically it cant be fixed with the traverse and they aren't being forced to fix it, i will not have my wife drive this car with kids in it even though i just paid $1400 to have a repair that will not last. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 10 mph, the steering wheel seized and excessive force was required without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was uncertain if the steering pump or the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 97,000.
While driving lost all power steering. dealer said the pump was to be recalled but the pump cased the rack and pinion to fail why is not covered under warranty with a cost of roughly $1200. *tr
Driving down a two lane highway. needed to pass car in front of us doing 40mph in a 60. signaled over into oncoming traffic lane, passed over, sped up, and signaled to transfer back into original lane. during transfer, power steering stopped, forcing me to pull harder than normal to move the vehicle over. once the maneuver was almost complete, power steering returned, causing me to over correct right, then needing to correct back left. the quick maneuver caused my passenger to hit their head on their window. from that moment on, power steering only works when the accelerator is being depressed. when you are idle, coasting, etc., power steering is not present and requires excessive force to steer car. called dealership today to get it looked at. i assume it might be related to special coverage adjustment #14329, but not sure. *tr
Increasing noise in steering column associated with turning the car. chevy service man said i needed a new steering gear and pump. *tr
At very low speeds (when parking in a parking stall or parallel parking) our power steering starts to seize up and the wheel becomes very difficult to turn...in fact it takes every ounce of my petite body to get it to turn. upon bringing it in we have learned that there is a warranty extension out on this very issue and also received a letter indicating that. unfortunately they could not duplicate the issue therefore the fix was not completed. i would think that any type of steering failure that comes without an indicator warning light should be considered a "safety item". we have also had a clunking noise coming from the steering column since we purchased the vehicle and gets worse when it's cold out. also we now have a power steering wheel gear leak and the dealership indicated to us that they also thought that the leak might be a part of the problem which is also alarming for again the fact that i am losing power steering with no warning light indicator. i do not believe this to be the root of our issue because if it was a fluid level issue it would be more consistent rather than an intermittent issue. i find it kind of strange that all of the sudden we have all these power steering issues all at once and yet other gm models are being offered life time warranties on some of these same issues. i have opened a case with gm about the failure when it comes to turning the steering wheel because of the fact that it has yet to be resolved and gm has already recognized the issue in the warranty extension and has an obligation to fix it. we first noticed this issue since the middle of summer 2014. we will soon have a child taking driving lessons with this vehicle and we are almost afraid that we will lose 100% power steering because of these issues while he is driving and he will have no idea what to do which is a scary thought! *tr
Hard to steer at low speeds; thumping sound. on nov 8, 2014 , i took the vehicle to burlington chevrolet, however they stated it wasn't the power steering pump. they said it was the steering gear rack which will cost me about $1,600 plus tax (also includes flushing the line and wheel alignment). this is ridiculous. i've read similar common problems. this has to be related to the recent power steering pump issue letter that gm recently mailed (14329). i'm frustrated! *tr
The vehicle began to under steer intermittently while driving through a mountain pass during a friday evening. while driving through curves the car had to be slowed considerably below the speed limit to negotiate the turns. once near our destination approximately 40 miles after first noticing the problem, found turning the vehicle at lower speeds (in parking lot) nearly impossible and improbable after narrowly missing a ditch instead of a driveway of the hotel. the following morning made appt. with gm dealer to evaluate, while en route (approx. 4 miles) the steering became more and more difficult to turn, when we approached the dealership, the steering wheel needed to be turned several times under extreme duress (as if there was hardly any movement of the steering rack itself) only to slightly turn the vehicle enough to get in the driveway and into the parking lot. once the dealership was able to look at the vehicle, we were informed that the power steering unit had failed (not under warranty) and that because it failed it did not lubricate the steering rack properly therefore ruining and rendering the steering system inoperable. the repair has been quoted at $2600 with parts and 12 1/2 hours of labor. the steering system is an essential component to any vehicle, therefore we are greatly concerned for our safety and others due to the nature of this failure considering the vulnerability exhibited by the steering rack in the event of a power steering unit failure. i am absolutely befuddled that a vehicle that is only 4 years old, with less than 70,000 miles can have such a catastrophic failure. had i not had the strength needed to fight the steering the vehicle could have easily failed to make a turn and certainly have been in an accident. *tr
I bought this vehicle in 2012 and the steering column has always made a weird noise. in september of 2014 while driving with my 1 and 2 year old daughters in the vehicle the power steering went out altogether. i got the power steering pump replaced the following day. however, this was just a short, temporary fix (about a week). the steering column makes even a louder and greater noise but the power steering comes and goes. it is very stiff all of the time. makes driving a real chore, especially when you live way out of time on curvy back roads. it's only a matter of time before an accident occurs because the steering will be fine for a minute then you go to turn and it vanishes and you have to pull on the steering wheel to get it to turn. this is not safe for myself, family, or others on the road. i see many others have had similar issues. i do not like the fact that i have to worry every time i get behind the wheel by myself or with my children in the car if i am going to make it somewhere safely. please help me with this issue. *tr
For the last several weeks the power steering has been going out intermittently while driving at slow speeds. it is dangerous and scary. we finally had to get the power steering pump replaced yesterday. this seems to have corrected the problem. *tr
In september of last year our 2010 chevy traverse started getting hard to turn left or right and i have researched the problem and i can not afford 1200.00 dollars to fix the problem which seems like it is the power steering pump. at this point we have no power steering about 90 % of the time. it is getting dangerous at this point and i don't know what we will do this winter if we start to slide we would be unable to steer fast enough to keep from wrecking. we need this car. other than the steering, i love this car.
We have been having trouble turning at slow speeds. almost ran into another car head on because the car wouldn't turn. ask our dealer service center and of course they said they never heard of anyone having problem. that we need a new power steering rack at $1400.00. funny that this web site has tons. in today's world - where customer service should be top of the line it is at the bottom. no wonder people buy foreign cars. *tr
While trying to turn onto a street, steering was very hard to turn and made it difficult to complete the turn. this happened sporadically for several months until we took it into the dealership to have it fixed. it cost $2k to fix the steering pump. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, the power steering seized and become difficult to maneuver when making a right or left turned. the failure recurred each time the vehicle was driven. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
We have owned our 2010 traverse for a few years now. the steering problem has gotten horrible for the past 6 months. we now live in spain and as a military member i can't just go out and buy a brand new car. chevrolet owners and board members need to come together and get this problem fixed. i think it will have to take a person to die in a car accident for them to ever give a [xxx] about this issue that they have with one of their top selling cars. i love my traverse but i have tired of pouring money into this common problem i am starting to notice that everyone has. i started to do research and on every online site people are having horrible problems with the steering. i really need someone to take a deep look into this problem and their ceo's and board members need to do a major recall on the traverse platform and have this problem looked at. *tr information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
At low speed while parking the power steering stops working. *tr
We bought our 2010 chevy traverse lt with approx. 62,000 miles. at approx. 67,000 miles we experienced a zipper type sound with the steering, this sound can be intermittent and at all speeds. at about the same time we experienced that the steering to be very hard and almost impossible to turn at speeds between 5 and 35 mph. the steering is almost impossible to turn when pulling into and out of a parking space. the steering is just as impossible to turn when having to quickly turn at speeds as high as 35 mph. this usually happens when changing lanes or onto another road. another time that the steering becomes unsafe is when stopped at a stop sign and trying to turn from a stopped position. this has put my family at risk at numerous times. we love the traverse and were impressed with the steering response when we first bought the vehicle. this is a major concern as it is a safety concern, and research shows that this is not a isolated to our vehicle. we have talked to other people with the same gm platform, and web forums also, show that this is a problem wider spread then just a few vehicles. there should be no reason the steering fails in a quality made vehicle, especially at below 100,000 miles. *tr
I was driving home from florida back to indiana when i pulled off the interstate to realize my power steering was not working. the steering was so difficult i didn't think i could make the turn. my family of five had a very scary ride home. we paid a big price for this chevy and didn't expect major problems at only 60,000 miles. this may be our last chevy purchase. *tr
While turning the power steering stops working.
I was driving and i heard the check engine alert (3 dings). the warning said service traction control service stabilitrak. after that, the car would take longer and i had to press a lot harder on the gas to accelerate. there are about 3 forums which all include complaints like this however the dealer is saying they will not recall the throttle body which is the part that they are replacing. the throttle body is also in several other gmc vehicles such as the acadia *tr
While driving at slow speed, our chevy traverse's power steering fails to work and the vehicle becomes difficult to control. the problem has been getting worse and is almost always noticeable when parking and backing the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a chevy dealership and they stated the vehicle needed the power steering fluid changed. on the way home after the fluid service, the power steering briefly failed as i was making a left turn from being stopped. i had to slow in front of on coming traffic to regain control of the vehicle so i could safely complete the turn. i now feel the vehicle is unsafe for my family to ride in and poses a risk to the general public. *tr
