Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT

The speedometer has failed to work properly. it is erratic, sometimes registering "0" and sometimes registering 20-30 mph over actual speed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext. while the contact was driving at various speeds, unexpectedly the speed odometer and other gauges became inoperative. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing where they stated that the failure was contributed to the instrument panel cluster. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

While driving all gauges in the instrument panel will completely stop working leaving vehicle traveling at an unknown speed! *tr

2004 chevrolet trailblazer speedometer and fuel gauge are unreliable. speedometer sometimes seems to work but is no accurate when it does show a speed. fuel gauge moves but is usually the needle is not even in the normal area ie. between e and f. there are numerous complaints online, but gm has not issued a recall. this is a prevalent problem that gm should resolve at no cost to the owners. *tr

As i have seen from other owners of the same gm product, while driving down the road my speedometer doesn't work right. is always registering at a very high speed, sometimes even pegging down where your gears are located. costs to repair is $600-$700 and 5-7 days of down time as the part must be sent away and repaired. like other consumers i can not afford this costly repair. i would think after the numerous complaints gm would repair. personally, i'm considering foreign next time. at least they own up to their mistakes and repair at no cost to the consumer. *tr

Instruments on the instrument panel began to fail one at a time starting with tach then oil pressure and now speedometer. started a couple of months ago and have not had the money to fix. have to fix it now that speedometer doesn't work. problems started at about 75,000 miles now at 92,000 miles. *tr

I own a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext. took the vehicle in october 2009 for a oil change & a exhaust leak was told the exhaust manifold needed to be replaced, after searching on the internet found out it is a known problem that gm when manufacturing the vehicle used bolts that were to long making the manifold get to hot and therefore leads to it cracking. after having the vehicle repaired at the cost of $319.50 & having it back for a month & driving it 3 times my speedometer went haywire registering a sitting still speed of 45 mph. once again looked on the internet and found numerous complaints about the instrument panel cluster they have issued recalls for the chevy trucks and yukon gmc for the same issue but no recall so far about the trailblazer. this repair will cost me $516.33, both of these repairs are due to faulty manufacturing & should be listed as a recall. i just hope that none of the other issues i have read about becomes a concern for me. *tr

I own a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext. took the vehicle in october 2009 for a oil change & a exhaust leak was told the exhaust manifold needed to be replaced, after searching on the internet found out it is a known problem that gm when manufacturing the vehicle used bolts that were to long therefore the exhaust manifold wasn't properly torque/tightened which made the manifold vibrate until it broke and prior to its breaking it leaked the manifold becomes loose and that leads to it cracking. after having the vehicle repaired at the cost of $319.50 & having it back for a month & driving it 3 times my speedometer went haywire registering a sitting still speed of 45 mph. once again looked on the internet and found numerous complaints about the instrument panel cluster they have issued recalls for the chevy trucks and yukon gmc for the same issue but no recall so far about the trailblazer. this repair will cost me $516.33, both of these repairs are due to faulty manufacturing & should be listed as a recall. i just hope that none of the other issues i have read about becomes a concern for me. *tr

I have a 2004 trailblazer i purchased in 2007 for my wife. after about a year the speedometer is not working at all. after a little research, how found out many people are having the same problem. i believe chevy should recall the instrument panel. *tr

Instrument panel gauges fluctuate, showing inaccurate readings. speedometer sticks on one speed and also just fails consistently. *tr

The speedometer has been giving me problems for some time. at first it would malfunction from time to time at approximately 89,000. now the speedometer has stopped all together. when i started investigating this problem i found out that chevrolet has another vehicle, "chevy tahoe", that has had the same problem. why there is a recall to fix the tahoe and not the trailblazers? definite "defect trend" that should result in a recall. i don't have the $600+ to fix so must continue to drive with my young children in it. a very unsafe situation for me and the others on the road! waiting for the whole instrument panel to fail as others say happens next! *tr

2004 chevy trailblazer speedometer and gauges started working erratically around summer 2009. speedo and gauges stick or peg out daily. gm does not recognize this as their problem yet there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of blogs on the internet of this same problem. *tr

Each time i start my 2004 chevy trailblazer ext the "change engine oil" light comes on. after 15 seconds it turns off. on several occasions, my rpm will either go extremely high, traveling 30 and the rpm says i'm doing 90, or will go extremely low, going 30-says i'm going 0. also, my gas gauge started me out with just under a half a tank of gas, and when i got to work 15 miles away, i am under a quarter a tank of gas. finally, my 4wd and all-wheel-drive flashes intermittently while i am driving. i do not need to switch it myself, it just sometimes switches to 4hi, and flashes between. this morning i noticed the light wasn't on, period. the electrical system is entirely messed up. *tr

2004 chevy trailblazer lt model had defective speedometer. constantly showing wrong speed, and stuck between 50 and 120 mph even when parked. *tr

Battery gauge failed about 6 months ago and i didn't think much of it but now the gas gauge, oil gauge and fuel gauge are failing and according to everything i have read the speedometer is next. my dome lights haven't worked right in over a year but that didn't bother me. the gauges all failing are a safety factor. it occurs everytime i start the suv - i do not have the money to repair it. *tr

Yesterday my dashboard control panel worked great. this morning (4/18/09) as i was driving to my bank, i noticed that none of the gauges and/or lights were working ( oil gauge, temperature gauge, battery gauge, speedometer, tachometer, etc). major safety factor. *tr

(speedometer cluster problems) it seems to be a big prob with chevy trucks & suvs. my vehicle speedometer cluster is no working, gm is refusing to recall the 2004 tb. *tr

Driving home from vacation on the highway in a snowstorm, we realized the tachometer was no longer showing the correct rpms. it was stuck around 4000 while we were going less than that. a little while later we noticed that while we were slowing down for a red light and traveling probably 10 mph the speedometer was showing 60 mph. we quickly stopped for gas, thinking maybe those gauges were malfunctioning as well, but they weren't. when we accelerated again, the speedometer raised from 60 to eventually over 120 mph. each time we slowed down the needle stuck, then when we accelerated it went higher. while we were driving in the snowstorm on the highway, we think we were traveling about 20 to 30 mph, but the speedometer was still over 120 mph. this was scary because under normal driving conditions we would have been able to judge our speed, but in the snow it was hard to do so. on monday we called the dealership and were told that vehicles with under 70,000 miles they would fix but since ours had 78,000 we would have to pay for repairs. we decided we can't afford the repairs, then a few days later both gauges started working properly on their own. we are still leery of trusting them, and we are assuming they will malfunction again. i can see this problem leading to being ticketed for speeding and possibly even having an accident due to not knowing your speed. *tr

2004 chevrolet trailblazer all instruments intermittently quit functioning during normal operation (speedometer, fuel level, rpm's, battery charge, oil pressure, temperature, mileage, and gear indicator. you can't tell what gear you are in. difficult to figure out forward from reverse. this is not safe at all to operate especially not knowing what gear you are in. *tr

While exiting my child school parking lot the engine shut down and went into limp mode. i was in the middle of a busy intersection, had to turn hazard lights on so i wasn't hit. could not go over 5 miles per hour. speedometer has intermittently gone haywire. instrument cluster failure. *tr

On february 7, 2009, we were driving on the interstate. when approaching traffic i took the vehicle off of cruise and began to slow down. however, the speedometer did not move. after that, everytime i began to accelerate, the speedometer would not move. everytime i start the car it drops 5 mph, but when you use cruise or do a constant speed, it sticks again. we are getting ready to go on a big family vacation and do not feel safe taking my family in a vehicle that you don't know how fast you are going. my mechanic is replacing the cluster with a used one from the local salvage yard. a used one with labor is still going to cost me $200 and who knows how long that one will last. i cannot believe with this many complaints about the same equipment failure that gm hasn't done anything. it's just not safe! *tr

My speedometer and tach began reading high (90mph, 115mph - 6000rpms, 7000rpms) before both needles pointed straight down. if i turned off the car, they would reset themselves to 55mph and 5000rpms. i was on the beginning of a long road trip when this happened, so i was hoping i wasn't going to get pulled over for speeding. when i returned home i took my car in to be repaired and thankfully i was still under warranty. this problem also happened to my parents 2004 trailblazer. after seeing all of the complaints of the same issue, i feel that i shouldn't have had to pay my $100 deductible. this definitely sounds like a gm defect. if his ends up being a recall, could i get reimbursed?? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext. the contact stated that the speedometer becomes stuck at 20 mph. in addition, the speedometer displays 40 mph when he is driving 60 mph and vice versa. once the vehicle is shut off and restarted, the speedometer fails completely. the failure has been occurring for three weeks. the mechanic stated that the speedometer cluster needed to be replaced; however, the contact feels that the repair should be covered by the manufacturer because the failure is not due to driver error. the current and failure mileages were 66,000.

The speedometer has become erratic and will not show how fast we are driving, causing an unsafe condition. based on the number of posts on several forums, this appears to be a very common problem, and with time may become universal. *tr

My speedometer on my 2004 trailblazer doesn't record the exact speed. *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet trailblazer frequently gets stuck or stops working, while driving. *tr

The gauges on my 2004 chevrolet trailblazer do not work. i had this same problem several months ago and took to dealership to fix, they said there was nothing wrong. now my warranty is out and they again are not working. it is not safe to drive when the speedometer, tachometer, oil gauge, and temperature gauges don't work. apparently this is a problem that many owners of the same model have reported and nothing has been done about it. this is a safety hazzard and should have a recall associated with it with chrevolet footing the bill. i guess it won't be addressed until deaths or injuries are associated with it. *tr

I have a 2004 chevy trailblazer extended suv. my check engine light has continuously flash on and off since having the truck only six months. it has continued to do this for the life of the car at almost 70,000 miles. also, my speedometer now works only when it wants to. at first we thought it was because of the cold weather, now it is almost 70 degrees and we have the same problem. sounds as if this if very common in these models. someone needs to find a way to compensate owners for these costly repairs. *tr

I own a 2004 chevy trailblazer with a malfunctioning dash. the rpm gauge does not work, speedometer bounces back and forth only working once in a while, gas gauge quite working last week so i am judging by how many miles i travel. the mileage has not stopped functioning yet. i feel that this is not a safe manner to operate this vehicle bu it is my only mode of transportation .i understand that there are several complaints online about this very same problem. chevy should be help accountable and recall/fix this issue. *tw

2004 chevy trailblazer v8 ext speedometer acting funny complete stopped shoes going 30. it reads faster than i drive so i have to figure out the stopped speed to figure out how much fast i am driving. internet has many complaints about the same issue and similar ones like tahoe has been recalled. *tr

Speedometer gives false readings. started in the winter of 2008, but is now happening on a weekly basis during the summer. *tr

We were traveling for the holidays and noticed that the rpm gauge stopped functioning properly. it was pointing below zero. then, last week the problem spread to the gas gauge and the oil pressure gauge. this is a potential safety hazard. *tr

The speedometer has been failing consistently. several occasions it fails to return to zero, registering 100mph when gps shows 35mph. after several days, it will start working normally - then fault again. miles driven on the odometer does not appear to be affected. the condition is starting to spread to other gauges, with the tachometer showing several similar symptoms. *tr

I started to lose the high speeds on the fan blower. in checking the internet i found this is a common problem for g.m. the problem is the blower motor resistor. when i went to replace this part i found that the whole wiring harness had been burnt to. it got so hot that it melted everything. the fuse for this did not even blow. this could have set the truck on fire. it is funny how the parts to fix this has much thicker wire. the parts in total was around $118. thanks to a friend i had no labor cost. if i would of taken it to a g.m. dealer for sure they would of wanted over $300. g.m. knows they have a problem and are doing nothing about it. i feel this is a serious matter as it could of set the truck on fire. *tr

On november 26 2007 took my chevy trailblazer 04 4 wheel dr. in for steering wheel shimmy. could not duplicate. also c.d. changer will not eject cd's and low beams on headlights not working. repaired headlights and c.d. changer. did not fix steering problem. on june 07 took in for major service with 33,000 miles. on dec.8 2008 took in for stalling when coming to a stop. could not duplicate the problem.this is my main complaint, the stalling on jan.. 10 2009 took in for erratic speedometer which was happening for about 3 months off and on.rebuilt the speedometer. on june 11 2009 took car in for stalling, ses lamp comes on when driving and hvac fan does not blow on the #5 position. there is alot of grinding and whining when vehicle shifts to second gear. and turning at low speeds there is a whining coming from the front end. removed and replaced 02 sensor. for the stalling they could not verify concern. recommended throttle body de-carb and injection system cleaning. for the #5 fan not working removed and replaced speed control resistor. transmission they could not feel any unusual shifting.for the steering prob.replaced power steering pump and power steering gear. car still stalling on 6-19 -09. took in. did another decarb service and replace fuel filter.still stalls. 7-01-09 when car starts there is a loud clutch fan noise like a jet taking off. feels like the trans is overworking, veryloud not right. fix,was fancontrol set im properly trouble code p0483 . bulletin 05-06-02-004 reprogram pcm. claim code1013b. july 8 took car for stalling issue july 9 took car for stalling issue july 10 took car for stalling issues no paper work for these 3 days they were trying to recreate the stalling issue. july 20 2009 in shop for 16 days for stalling issue they finally confirmed .replaced pcm. they called in tech assistance case #10971267 he said to perform top engine cleaning. outcome is cannot guarantee repairs at this time due to how random this prob occurs. *tr

The instrument panel on my 2004 chevrolet trailblazer has gone out. my speedometer, oil gauge, and fuel gauge are no longer registering the correct information. *tr

Several times that i've been driving the trailblazer, the speedometer goes crazy and says that we are traveling at a much higher rate of speed than we are. like if im going approx 70mph, it states we are going about 110mph! this is definitely a safety issue! and it has never been a recall? *tr

I own a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer north face/ext. the speedometer has been giving me problems for some time. at first it would malfunction from time to time. now the fuel gauge has stopped all together. when i started investigating this problem i found out that it is a common problem with this make and model vehicle. i also found out that chevrolet has another vehicle, "chevy tahoe", that has had the same problem. why there is a recall to fix the tahoe and not the trailblazer ext. is very interesting to me. i have gone as far as to take a look at the tahoe instrument cluster and saw that they are very alike. the vehicle recall to replace the instrument cluster on these vehicles should be sent out asap. if you take a look at the complaints on the internet you will see that this is a problem that many trailblazer owners seem to be having. you will also see that the tahoe complaints, "for which there is a recall", are identical. thank you; patrick *tr

2004 chevy trailblazer ext speedometer. *tr

The instrument gauges, including speedometer are producing erratic data, sometimes 25-30 mph fast or slow to the actual speed as tracked by a garmin gps, and milemarker calculations. the oil pressure and amp gauges are not working properly as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext. while driving approximately 35-40 mph, the speedometer, rmp gauge, tachometer, and the heater on the instrument panel stopped operating. the contact stated he called the dealer and the vehicle was not under warranty and there no recalls on his vehicle. the vehicle had not been repaired. the contact was unable to provide a vin. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.

My 2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext has the same problems all the other trailblazers have. poor design and subpar manufacturing of parts in foreign countries have resulted in electrical problems that cannot be fixed.gauges and lights randomly going crazy, heat and a/c may or may not operate, vehicle may or may not start, key may or may not release from ignition. ignition switch has been replaced multiple times in last two years and often brand new ignitions straight out of the box from the dealer parts department are no good. as other gm vehicles with the same exact problems have been recalled one would think trailblazer owners should deserve the same courtesy.clearly gm disagrees. i guess when you know uncle sam will always be there to bail you out you can do what you want and still sleep good at night. i wouldnt know . as the parent of four children this is a serious safety issue with me. i can no longer drive it as i know it is not dependable.

I have many electrical issues with my 04 trailblazer from my window lights on the drivers door and the passenger door. i have had my radio replaced because it melted one of my cds. my head lights work when they feel like it same with the rear wiper. it has stalled out in traffic on me. i have also heard that in most 2000 to 2006 trailblazers the reason for the electrical problems is because water is running down the passenger side door into the dash and hitting one of the main wiring harnesses causing it to have many electrical issues. i heard this from someone who has an 06 trailblazer that just had it a replaced for $700.00 to fix and was told that it will just have to be replaced in a few more years because they cant fix the problem. *tr

The instrument cluster is erratic, speed show zero, tach is not working at all now, the oil pressure and volt meter is erratic. this is a unsafe driving condition not knowing if you are going at a unsafe speed or if you are doing damage to the motor with the oil pressure is so erratic. *tr

Instrument cluster goes crazy. no oil pressure/excessive oil pressure, no tach/pegged tach, speedometer gives false speed readings(this is really dangerous), battery reads low volts or off the scale volts/. this happens every day. chevy dealers estimated repair cost $600-$700 dollars. *tr

When i bought my truck everything was fine now the gas gauge, oil gauge and rpm gauge are not working right and i see that i am not the only person with this problem, it will cost about $600 to $700 dollars to fix this and with economy the way it is i think chevy should do something about this. my car is a 2004 chevy trailblazer. *tr

No previous problems with panel. problem occurs frequently. tachometer quit working correctly...goes completely to opposite end of gauge. took days before it went back to normal location. speedometer does not work correctly...continues to climb to higher end of gauge....reads above 30 even when standing still. goes down after repeatedly shutting off and restarting engine. whirring sound made when starting or stopping engine. contacted chevy dealer repair shop, they are fully aware of situation, advised it will get worse and will eventually stop working at all. no parts are serviceable, needs to be sent out for repair, could take anywhere from a day to a week or more depending on the parts needed. plus there is the additional cost of having it read by the computer for the correct part(s). my car will be inoperable soon according to dealer, unsafe to drive, situation needs immediate fix. *tr

I own a 2004 trailblazer ext and a couple of months ago the rpm gauge stopped functioning and doesn't even register. less than a month later the speedometer started malfunctioning and many times doesn't even register a speed while driving for several hours. this has been a daily occurrence every time my wife and family get in the vehicle. this is a serious safety hazard for my family and for anyone else we may pass on the road. i know from reading multiple other complaints across the internet that this is not an isolated issue and that gm has already recalled the console cluster on several other models having the same or similar issues. when are they going to be held responsible for also recalling the same problem on this vehicle make? *tr

Total failure of entire gauge cluster around 54000 miles 600 dollar repair was told that it shorted out and melted the connectors. *tr

Automatic transmission shifted out of third and would not shift back while i was on the freeway. dealer said a transmission flush and fluid change would fix it. after performing flush dealer transmission was shot and needed replacement. instrument cluster functioning intermittently, speedometer works at first and then slowly goes down to zero. *tr
