We have classified the 28 complaints from 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
My anti locking brakes seem to be engaging when i break at slow speeds. i had an accident in slow traffic when i pressed on the breaks, but the vehicle did not stop. this happened to me twice on the way to work this morning, almost causing another wreck...that is why i am writing today. it doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes. i didn't realize what the problem was until i began doing research.*ak
The abs brakes seems to activate all the time while driving at low speeds when i press down on the brakes to come to a stop. *nm
Dt: the contact states there is nhtsa recall campaign id 05v379000 concerning anti lock brakes. this vehicle manifests the same problems as indicated in the recall, but is not included in the recall due to vin. no repairs have been made at this time.*ak
Dt: the consumer stated that the vehicle was having the same problems as recall campaign # 05v379000. the consumer contacted gm but found that his vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin number. the problem started approximately 18 months ago. there had been no repairs made at this time. *ak (12/08/05) when braking at low speeds, the anti-lock brakes would activate and the vehicle would require more distance to stop causing several near missed accidents. *sc
The rotors experienced premature wear, which caused vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.*jb
Consumer state that the vehicle would vibrate when applied the brakes. dealer was notified and replaces the front rotors and the pads on four separated occasions and the problem still reoccurring. (as i mentioned vin# please fill in) ts
My 1999 chevrolet tahoe has had an ongoing brake problem from the day i bought it. the brakes seem to apply themselves during normal driving. i have had to replace two sets of tires and two sets of front brake pads in less than 50000 miles. sometimes when i smell something getting hot while driving i will stop and feel the front wheels. they will be so hot that i cannot touch them. then the other day i had to make a panic stop and the anti lock system did not work and the whole car shuddered and shook and i thought for sure i would hit the car in front of me. i have not taken it to the chevrolet dealer as i am on limited income and cannot afford a large expense. i have been following the problems with these cars for years hoping that gm would finally issue a recall. the tire dealer that installed the last set of tires told me that the tires failed because of the front wheels getting so hot. because of this i have put very few miles on the car and do not drive it over 50 mph. i still have the tires from the rear but threw away the ones from the front because of the damage to them. *tr
Consumer replaced twice brake pads caused by the rotors which went bad, causing loss of rear brakes. dealer has been notified.*aki
Battery acid leaks from positive post, causing corrosion in brake line.*ak
While driving, brakes operated poorly. there was extended stopping distance. *ak consumer stated that the front end of vehicle vibrated when driving speeds of 50 and over, the dealer determined that the left front caliper was stuck out, also 2 front hubs and a sensor were replaced, consumer also stated there was a problem with the master cylinder.*jb
Brakes on right passenger's side keeps wearing down metal to metal. had replaced 5 times. dealer contacted. *ak
While traveling at 30 mph consumer applied brakes, and pedal was hard, resulting in a four car collision. please provide any further information.*ak
Chevy tahoe 1999, we have owned this vehicle for four years and put 40,000 + miles on it, it now has 102,000 miles. in that time frame we have had to replace the front roters and pads four times. in january of 2002 i had an accident at slow speed in slushy road conditions where the vehicle did not stop over a travel distance of 100'+/- it was blamed on driver error and poor road conditions, since that time we had a complete failure of the front brakes with no accident and fortunately no injury. a third incident resulted in no property damage or accident.
Dt: without warning the brakes will not work. the consumer has to hit the brakes hard at times to get the vehicle to stop. the consmer said there is a recall in canada on these brakes. the dealer said there is no problem with the brakes. the manufacturer has not been called yet. *ak *sc *jb
Brakes do not work properly. stopping distance has increased since consumer purchased vehicle. had contacted dealer, and the dealer replaced some parts dealing with brakes, but problem still occurs.*ak
Power booster failed, causing brake pedal to hit floor.also, dealer advised that brake pads will have to be replaced. this will be the third replacement. *ak
Rotors had to be replaced three times since date of purchase of vehicle. brakes also would lock up while consumer was driving.*ak
At 14 miles the vehicle developed excessive vibration on stopping at speeds over 4-=50 mph. dealer resurfaced rotors(front)cleaned cailpers(warranty). at 27,500 dealer again turned rotors, repisced front pads, cleaned and adjusted rear brakes.
The anti-lock brakes come on intermitently when comming to a slow controlled stop in any weather condition. i pulled the fuse the controls the abs system to prevent this from happening because i figure it is a costly repair and isn't under waranty any longer. yesterday i read in the cleveland plain dealer driving section about other motorist having this same problem on 1998 chevy trucks. i thought that sounds like my problem. the article suggested that we contact you because no one including the dealer has been able to diganose this problem. they suggested a failure of an inclement weather sensor. i am concened because i know this is a heavy vehicle and abs allows you to control a vehcile better in an emergency situation. i can provide the vin if you need it i just don't have it right now at work.*ak
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. the vehicle made a jerking motion at any speed when the brake was depressed. the dealer stated that the wheel speed sensors needed to be cleaned. the dealer cleaned the sensors. however, the vehicle continued to jerk. the dealer replaced the speed sensors, but the failure continued to persist. the contact has not taken the vehicle to the dealer since the sensors were replaced. the current and failure mileage were 123,000.*ak
While driving about 30 mph consumer applied brakes, pedal went to floor, no braking action. towed to dealer, who found power booster had failed, and had to be replaced. *ak
Could not stop almost wrecked! replacement cost almost $500. very dangerous!!!. no safety defect mentioned. *ak
Truck was taken in repeatedly for brakes, transmission, air conditioner and headlights prior to warranty expiration and was told they could not duplicate the problem or it was under "chev specs" or we were experiencing anti-lock brakes. water pump began leaking and had to be replaced 2200 miles outside of warranty. entire brake system, lines-calipers, everything had to be replaced because "foreign fluid corroded" the system. no one has touched the brakes but the dealer. we repeatedly complained about the brakes taking too long to stop the vehicle, having a spongy feel and absolutely no confidence that they would stop in an emergency situation. overall, the brakes just did not feel safe and we reported this when the vehicle was still under warranty. intake manifold is leaking and needs to be replaced. battery exploded and leaked battery acid everywhere damaging other engine parts. transmission is in need of an overhaul/replacement either as a direct result of the battery exploding or mere coincidence considering we have always complained that something was wrong with the transmission and you could push the truck while in park a full foot. the air conditioner has always leaked after driving approx. 2 hr as well as the driver's side high beam headlight always has water in it. detailed complaints have been filed with the attorney generals of az and fl, as well as copies sent to the dealer, manufacturer and leasing company involved. chevrolet should be ashamed of the shoddy product that rolled off their assembly line and the manner in which they conduct business surrounding consumer complaints generated as a direct result from poor workmanship at one of their factories. there is a long list of "cosmetic" defects as well. for instance, the custom leather seats that we paid extra for are wearing holes in them; the driver's side door handle is cracked, drink holders are rusting, and the list goes on and on.
The positive terminal on the original delco battery broke off, leaking acid down the wheel well onto the right front brake lines and the abs electrical connector to the right front brake. the acid corroded the brake line, electrical connector, and removed the paint on the frame and lower a-frame. the failure occured in our driveway and the vehicle was disabled. had to buy a new battery and 2 cans of battery acid cleaner to remove the acid in the right side engine compartment and lower frame assembly. the brake problem occured as my wife was driving home. she said that the steering was shaking and rumbling. it was pulling to one side. i found the left front caliper had seized in the cradle assembly and worn the outer pad to less than a tenth of an inch. she said it had been squealing for a couple of days. the right side was ok, but, i changed all front pads any how. i had to clean rust from the caliper and mount to allow movement in the assembly. i still have the bad battery and the brake pads. *ak
Brakes failed at 19,443 miles. both pads and right rotor needed replacement. dealership will not stand behind warranty even though there are service bulletins out on both the brakes and rotors.
Battery has leaked acid onto brake line, causing all fluid to leak, amd a loss of braking power. deaelr has been contacted.*ak the battery acid corroded the brake line. *yh
Was braking vehicle & the steering wheel was shaking. made controlling of vehicle hard. took to dealer & informed by mechanic that brake rotors were causing the shaking problem. mechanic took the brake rotors off & informed owner they were made of tin. rotors were replaced with a different type.*ak front and back brakes failed twice. *yh
Consumer was backing out of driveway, and brakes had to be pumped to stop a little. there was brake fluid on the ground. emergency brake was not working, as well. dealer found alot of battery acid that badly corrored both brake lines. dealer was suppose to clean away the rust, but it was still was there.*ak
Contacted gmc , they would not come out to inspect vehicle as requested. no safety defect listed. *ak
Experienced excessive vibration when braking. mechanic advised that rotors were warped and needed to be turned. this was done but problem reoccurred after less than 5,000 mi. advised this time that rotors are warped again and need to be replaced, probably due to "the way i drive". i have never had this happen with other vehicles. after asking that they look further for a cause, i am told that this is normal wear and tear. after pushing a little harder, i am finally advised that the rotors on this year/model are prone to warping and should be replaced, but are not covered by warranty even though i puchased extended warranty. i am told that the gm replacement part will be identical to original. rear brakes were screeching @27489 mi (i purchased at 23326 mi). told that shoes nead replcmt due to wear. i, nor anyone i have spoken with have heard of rear brake shoes wearing out at this low mileage. *ak
I tried to stop the car and i was not able to get the vehicle to a complete top. the car only slowed down until i hit the vehicle infront of me. i have reported the brakes failure to the dealer previously. the dealer's response is that this is normal. *ak
Brakes failed and rearended another vehicle. vehicle wa stotaled. *ak
No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak
At any speed, brakes only work if pedal is pushed to floor, need lots of stopping time. dealer said that was the way tahoe's work. finally replaced them somewhere else. they used an upgrade that they said tahoes have for the 2000 year. also both back drums cracked.*ak
When brakes were applied at 35 mph in a sudden stop they grabbed and then released, causing vehicle to rearended another vehicle. *ak
We purchased the 1999 tahoe in june, 1998. we had the rotors turned in december 1998 and then replaced aug. 1999. this should not happen on a new vehicle, let alone one that costs as much as the tahoe. the brake pedal was going to the floor and the vehicle was not stopping very good, especially at a speed greater than 40 mph. the brakes were bled in the summer of 1999. that seemed to help for a while. but the problem seemed to reappear. we took the truck back to our dealer. they then replaced the brake master cylinder. that seemed to help. but i feel the brake system still is not a good system when you must press the pedal down so far to get a good stop. the manifold gaskets also had to already be replaced. for a fairly new and expensive vehicle, we have had alot of problems with this particular vehicle. (we had a 1995 chevy suburban before, and we had no problems with it. we really liked the braking system on it and wish we had never traded for the tahoe.) one thing i noticed on your recalls, on the 1998 tahoes, there was a recall on the rotors and braking system. since our truck was built early in may 1998, and listed as 1999, could we have possibly inherited the same problems as the 1998 tahoe? i would love to purchase a 2000 tahoe, but hesitate because of the braking system they may have. please inform me if there could be a recall on our model and year. i feel the 1998 recall should be extended to the 1999 since everything on the vehicles are the same. *ak
Was driving & starting to apply the brakes. felt a pulsating motion in the pedal. took vehicle to dealer & was informed the pads had worn unevenly, and that rotors were warped. also that the shoes needed replacing due to being worn out. entire front abs brake system needed replacing. *ak
Warping of front discs/rear drums and premature wear of pads/shoes @ 15k miles. dealership aware that there is an issue but not covered under warranty except unwritten 12/12. had rotors and drums turned and new pads installed. problem has been corrected and will hopefully last. *ak
Leakage from rear seal of brake master cylinder, causing loss of fluid from reservoir serving front disc brakes.
Abs will work intermittently when applying brakes. pedal goes hard, then brakes will work. once abs failed completely. *ak abs failed again going through a 4 way stop, luckily there was no traffic at the time. *slc
While driving at a speed of 55mph and applying the brakes brake pedal went allthe wayto the floor.consumer had to pump the brakes to get the vehicle to stop. vehicle had to be towed to dealer, and dealer replaced master cylinder in that reservoirs were empty. *ak
Master cylinder was leaking brake fluid, causing soft brake pedal, and resulting in poor braking ability. consumer had contacted dealer, dealer stated that was normal operation. consumer noted that the 2000 tahoe has been upgraded as to prevent this problem, and wants the old 4 wheel disc system to be replaced with the upgraded one. *ak *ml
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. while traveling at low speeds, the contact could feel the brakes grab when she depressed the brake pedal. however, the pedal released for a micro second before it grabbed again and stopped the vehicle. the failure began when the vehicle was purchased but has currently become more frequent and severe. if the contact slams on the brake pedal, the vehicle brakes properly and stops the vehicle normally. the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the failure mileage was 500 and current mileage was 56,000. updated 6/2/08 *cn
Pulling up to a red light and upon applying brakes to slow down, vehicle started pulling left to right and jerking violently. contacted dealer, they were unable to find the problem. *ak
When applying the brakes pedal went all the way down to the floor, there was a popping noise and there were no brakes. driver lost control of the vehicle and flipped over into median. the vehicle has not been totalled. please provide any further details. *ak
All the engine oil leaked out of the engine in a span of fifteen minutes during a three mile drive. nlm
Brakes fail to operate properly. *ak
When you hit the brakes, they don't seem to stop quick enough. i hit my brakes on the highway to evoid an accident, they first locked up, then let go, i had to pull to the shooulder to evoid hitting another car. *ak
Had to stop quickly. brake pedal went to the floor without even getting close to squeeling the tires at all. was able to stop, but not very quickly. brakes smelled following the stop. asked the delear about the problem and got no good explaination. still having problems with weak brakes!*ak
Brakes failed, replaced and continue to make noise and pull. mjs
