We have classified the 28 complaints from 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
1999 chevrolet tahoe [xxx] has been experiencing increasingly severe brake shudder and activation of abs system at low speeds for the past 6 weeks. happens nearly every time i come to a slow stop and has caused dozens of near miss crashes in city traffic. brought vehicle into dealership on october 14, 2005 and was informed that item was a corrosion problem and part of a recall. gmc was contacted directly and informed me (and the dealership) that my vehicle vin was not part of the august 2005 recall notice and that problem was my own problem. inspection of brakes by local dealership confirmed that defect was consistent with other recall items and involved a component that was actually operating defectively (as opposed to preventative replacement of the part). recall should be re-examined and expanded. *nm updated 07/18/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
I am the original owner of a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. i have been having trouble with the brakes since 2001. i have had them replaced twice since my mileage on the vehicle is over 70,000. my problem is that they still don't feel right....i've mentioned this to both a gm dealer and private auto garage and they can find nothing wrong. i feel that the abs recall just announced will fix my problem. i looked at the list of states at www.kyw.com and noticed that delaware is not listed. how can i be a part of this recall so that i don't become an accident statistic? i phoned gm and they don't have any information in their computers about this recall yet. i was informed that you it is still in the works. *nm
Experience unwanted antilock brake system (abs) activation and increased stopping distances during low speed brake applications. we have filed a previous complaint for nhtsa campaign id 05v379000 which prompted gm to recall some of the vehicles affected by this problem. vehicles in our state of wisconsin were not included in this recall. when asking for the number of failures, i entered 100, but it happens everyday at just about every attempt we make at stopping the vehicle. *nm
I am writing ref nhtsa campaign id - 05v379000 i have experienced this symptom several times and always thought it was something i had done wrong. my complaint is that my state is not included in the recall and i can assure you that maryland uses a tremendous amount of salt in the winter. i can't remember the last time it occurred but am putting in today's date to finish the form. *jb
There has been a recall issued for 2000-2002 tahoe for front wheel speed sensor corrosion (product safety recall 05068) from gm. this should have also included the 1999 tahoe. this abs issue is currently happening to my tahoe. its been occurring since the middle of 2005. i heard of the upcoming safety recall back in august 2005. but when i took my 1999 tahoe to the dealership, they stated my vin# was not on the list for recalls. when i looked deeper into this recall, it only includes 2000-2002 tahoe. i know of this happening on another 1999 tahoe sport. it would be nice to have gm expand the recall coverage to include all 1999 tahoe. *jb
Dt: the consumer believes his vehicle should be included in recall#05v379000 concerning anti lock brakes. this vehicle was having the same problem with abs as stated in the recall. the consumer was told by the dealer and manufacturer that his vehicle was not included in the recall because the state in which the vehicle was located was not considered the salt belt. *ak *nm
Vehicle goes into abs mode at slow speed stop. on dry driveway almost ran into my own door. took the vehicle to the chevrolet dealer and brake system was inspected. found it necessary to replace both front speed sensors. also had to replace 1 broken caliper bolt as necessary. total cost $697.47. recall was issued for 1.35 million trucks and suvs for brake sensors. our truck being a 1999 tahoe was not covered. all other chevy trucks were. *jb

Dt: beginning in july, the consumer had a problem with the brakes during low speed brake applications. when approaching a stop sign, the brakes would grab. the brake pedal would fluctuate. there was a feeling like being on ice. the problem happened about 85-90 percent of the time. the problem became worse with time. the consumer checked on the recall 05v379000. his vehicle identification number was not included according to the dealer. they stated that the owner has the old wheel speed sensors and those were not affected by the recall. the consumer would like to alert nhtsa that his vehicle still has the exact problem listed in the recall. the consumer has not repaired it yet. the consumer has almost rear ended a car due to the abs activation and extended stopping distance. *jb update 1/11/2006 - *nm
Hydraulic antilock control unite module. arizona was not one of the states in the salt belt states. failure to the abs on my vehicle has caused me in 2 minor crashes. didn't have the money to repair vehicle. vehicle has been parked for some time. *nm
Anti-lock brakes on 1999 chevrolet tahoe have failed causing braking problems when coming to a stop. gm did not include the 1999 year tahoe in their recall leaving the cost of repair up to me. *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. while driving between 10-15 mph, the abs engages automatically whenever the brake pedal is depressed. as a result, the vehicle fails to come to a complete stop unless the driver slams on the brakes. through online research, the contact found nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the manufacturer stated that his vehicle was not included in this recall. he then found an investigation (action number pe05020) and took the vehicle to numerous places. some repair shops were unable to find any failures initially; however, when he took the vehicle to the dealer for an oil change, the diagnostic revealed that the wheel hub sensor needed to be replaced. the contact believes that this is a manufacturer safety defect. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 200,000. updated 2/209 *cn updated 02/04/09.*jb
Dt: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti lock brakes. this vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall before it was sold, but it is not included in the recall due to vin. the contact repaired the vehicle at his own expense and wanted reimbursement. *ak
In an unloaded (normal) condition. the brakes are very ineffective. almost to the point of not being useful. i've had them looked at by both a dealer and midas and they both said everything seems fine. the lack of sufficient braking power has made me come very close to causing an acident on multiple occasions. i have been told by more than one people that this is the norm for this series of chevy. i consider this a very hazardous item and i would be selling the vehicle if my finances allowed at this time. the truck is a 99 model and i bought it used in 04.
Constant activation of abs brakes due to corrosion between the front hub/bearing assembly and/or the speed sensor being defective. this issue is being addressed by gm on some vehicles but they won't fix mine because they say it's not in the vin number range. the problem is very real and very dangerous. it started almost 12 months ago, and i was told to wait for the state of wisconsin to be added to the recall list, they have added wisconsin but have selected certain vin numbers only that the bulletin applies to. *nm
Dt: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti lock brakes. this vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to vin and model year. the vehicle has not been repaired due to excessive cost. *ak
Dt: while driving at 45 mph and under the brakes failed to engage properly. the car will not stop properly. the consumer has to pump on the brakes to stop-sometimes this did not work. the vehicle was taken to chevrolet dealer, and they said there was a problem with the abs brakes. no repairs or corrections were made. at one incident the consumer was towing a horse trailer at 45 mph. when brake pressure was applied, there were no brakes, a complete failure, causing the horse trailer to jackknife. the brakes failed and engaged and failed and engaged as reported by the consumer. this resulted in the trailer damaging the vehicle, trailer, and injury to the horses. there have been no repairs or corrections made to the abs system at this time. *ak
Dt: a low speeds on snow or loose gravel the abs will not let vehicle stop at reasonable distances.*ak

Dt: the contact stated abs brakes failed. he applied the brakes while pulling into a parking lot and the vehicle kept going. he managed to avoid the vehicle parked in the space in front of him. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer , and they replaced the abs sensor, which rusted. the vehicle was operating normally now. the manufacturer was contacted. they offered no free remedy. the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa recall 05v379000 concerning the hydraulic antilock brakes. *ak updated 12/7/2005. *nm
My 1999 chevy tahoe has a condition where if the brakes are applied while the vehicle is traveling at a speed greater than 3.7 mph but less than 10 mph, i get unwanted anti-lock brake system (abs) activation. no accidents have been cause by this yet, but it has been very close many times.
1999 chevrolet tahoe experiencing problems with the brake equipment.*mr the abs activated at low speeds and while on dry pavement which reduced the braking effect and increased stopping distance. the abs light now remains on while the vehicle is in motion. the dealer suggested that the abs module be replaced after the first attempt to clean the corrosion on the electrical connector did not work. *jb
Dt: the contact stated the vehicle experiences extended stopping distances. the problem was intermittent at first and has continually gotten worse. she replaced the entire braking system , trying to correct the problem, and discovered a recall recall 05v379000 for a different year. the dealership replaced the abs sensors due to corrosion. *ak 11/29/2005 - *nm

About 2 months ago the anti-lock brakes on my tahoe started activating as i was slowing down or stopping on clear/dry roadways. it took longer to stop, and the first few times it happened i was fortunate enough to stop without smashing into the car in front of me, or that there was no car in the intersection when i went past the stop sign a few feet. i was told by a mechanic friend that it was caused by a dirty or defective abs sensor. he also told me that gm does not sell the sensor seperately and you have to buy the entire wheel hub, which costs around $500 per wheel. i have not had it repaired yet due to the cost. i simply allow myself more time to stop. i was told that i could disable the anti-lock brakes. i am hesitant to do that because i feel i have better control with the anti-lock brakes than conventional brakes with the weather in the area where i live.
Dt: the vehicle abs engaged at low speeds and he truck would not stop. two wheel sensors were the cause of the problem. *nm
Abs intermidently working at slow speeds. mechanic thought cleaning off the abs sensors would help. instead mechanic had to replace pads, rotors, calipers and slides and wheel cylinder. my 1999 tahoe only had 65,890 miles on 2/14/05 when repairs were performed. cost $785.00 and is well documented. mechanic is gm certified and was surprised at the amount of repairs needed.
Purchased vehicle from chevy dealer, shortly after noticed brakes do not function correctly, especially at low speeds. now the brakes consistently do not stop at low speeds in a secure distance. have not had a crash yet. i do not even drive the vehicle much anymore and want to sell it but i can't let someone get hurt. i am an engineer that works with the automotive industry and i practice very defensive driving especially with this tahoe. *jb
Anti-lock brakes activate at low speed as noted in campaign id 05v379000 of nhtsa. i was told my vehicle was not included in the recall and i am wondering why it isn't. *jb
Newspaper says "gm recalls 800,000 pickups, suv's" but when i call gm about my 1999 chevy tahoe brakes letting off at 4 mph ( the abs sensors kick in) i am told my vehicle is not in the recall. *nm
Gm issued a recall #05068 on over 800,000 trucks & suvs involving improper abs activation at low/slow speeds. (nhtsa campaign id #05v379000). i took my 1999 chev tahoe to the dealer today for the repair, and was told this recall did not effect my vehicle, that it did not include my vin #. the service person said he did observe the fact that my vehicle indeed has the problem, but they cannot fix it per gm's guidelines. i do not understand how - if it is evident the vehicle has the unsafe equipment/actions that warrant the recall, how can it be excluded from the recall? as of this date, i do not have an auto accident and/or personal injury on record due to the fact that i have learned to adjust my driving to avoid the obvious fact that, yes, i would have one or two rear-end accidents a week if i did not. this vehicle was purchased by me dec 2004 and was a problem from the beginning. we did not immediately have the money to pay to have it fixed. my husband was checking to see if the wiper system had been recalled for some reason as they rarely work, when he discovered the brake problem was being investigated. so we have waited this process out, only to discover it does not include our tahoe. as a matter of fact, when he printed the recall information out on 9/29/05, it listed the 1999 tahoes, but now as of today, it has been changed to 2000 and newer. how can that be when my vehicle has the problem? *jb
Replacement front brake rotors installed on a 1999 chevy tahoe 2 door and driven approximately 100 miles in 15 mile increments resulted in significant intereference wear between the disc brake pad backing plates and the cylindrical portion of the brake rotors, with significant heat generation, noise, and odor. subsequent inspection of the replacement rotors and the oem rotors revealed that the replacement rotors diameter of the cylindrical portion that covers the vehicle hub were approximately 3/16 larger diameter than the oem rotors. replacement rotors have been returned to the seller, paul do at cquencemotorsports, 4933 pearce street, apt. b, huntington beach, ca 92649. i believe the rotors were manufactured in china, their part number is 5569 min thk 30.86mm pt14 bt. fortunately, the problem was discovered before significant vehicle damage occured. the stock rotors were reinstalled without interference. old part unavailable, it was returned to seller under warranty.*ak
Dt: the contact stated there was a problem with the abs sensors. the abs was activating at low speeds. she took the vehicle to dealer for repairs. they replaced the abs sensors. also, the rotors and hubs were replaced, allowing them to access the sensors. the problem occurred again in october 2005. she was having the problem diagnosed today. *ak
In reference to the current investigation of gm trucks and suvs for brake problems at low speed. as i slow down or have to stop on clear/dry roadways, i have been fortunate not to smash into the vehicle in front of me or to cause an accident by going past the stop sign. i have had this problem with my 1999 chevy tahoe since december, 2004 and it's getting worse. it used to happen just once in awhile, now it happens 99% of the time when i slow down or need to stop(at a speed of under 10). i'm having to double pump the brakes and still pray it will stop in time. most repair places want to replace the hubs for a very high price of $500 per wheel or more. i am a michigan resident living in a "salt belt" state and i'm not understanding why the 1999 year chevy tahoe isn't covered under the recall for repairing the anti-lock brakes. i would like to challenge the national highway traffic safety department to drive my vehicle and then determine if it shouldn't be covered. *nm
Abs activates at speeds under 10mph whether applying the brakes or not. there is increased stopping distance. the pedal goes to the floor. has almost caused accident on more than one occasion.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 5 mph slowing down to a stop, the antilock brakes engaged without warning. this occurred on a normal road during normal braking. the dealership and manufacturer were notified however no repairs were made. updated 3/17/2006 - the consumer's vehicle was not included int he abs recall. the consumer heard a squeaking noise in the driveline. the dealer replaced the rear universal joint in the driveshaft. *nm
Chevrolet has recalled 1999 tahoes for abs sensor failure due to corrosion. i didn't receive a recall notice, so i called chev. at 1-800-630-2438. their representative told me that my vehicle's identification number did not fall within the "breakpoint", so my vehicle isn't covered in the recall, despite the fact that i had to have the abs sensors replaced in nov, 2004 at a cost of $741. the rep. couldn't explain why my vehicle didn't fall within the so-called "breakpoint". my vehicle's ident. # is [xxx]. the vehicle has always been used in maine, which is one of the "salt belt" states. *jb updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
Dt: the contact stated this vehicle was having the same problem as mentioned recall 05v379000, butt his vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. this occurred for approximately one year. the brakes continually pulsated whether the vehicle was moving or parked. the vehicle has been to the dealership twice for brake failure. the last time they found that both abs hubs were bad. due to the expense no repairs were performed. *ak udated 12/27/05. *jb
The abs activated when braking increasing the vehicle's stopping distance. the abs brakes made noise when they were activated and now it activates on dry payment. *nm in cold weather, the abs brakes would activate on the very first stop in the morning. the front brake pads were wearing uneven from left to right. *sc *jb
While driving 35 mph and depressing the brakes the brake pedal went to the floor and the vehicle did not slow down. the vehicle ran through a traffic light and was broadsided by another vehicle. consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealership. *ak the brakes were check 9 day prior to this accident. *nm

Dt: the consumer stated in january 2004 when applying the brakes they almost went to the floor and they made a rattling sound. on 01-27-2005 he had the front wheel sensors replaced because they were deformed due to the accumulation of rust on them. the consumer contacted gm and they told him that there was no recall on this vehicle. *ak (12/08/05) the consumer requested reimbursement for the repair. the vehicle also experienced near misses due to the brakes going all the way to the floor because of corrosion under the wheel sensors. *sc updated 11/29/2005. the consumer requests reimbursement because the vehicle has such low mileage. *nm
I have a 1999 chevrolet tahoe 4x4 lt. in the last few months i have had to replace the front brake pads and rotors every 5,000 miles. i am now looking to spend another $600 to replace them again. i have had them looked at each time, and i am told there is nothing wrong with the calipers and they have no reason as to why the rotors are being warped. the most recent time i took in the tahoe i was told the rotors were blue due to the heat from the pads, but again there is nothing wrong with the calipers or anything else. i have not been carrying any heavy loads in the vehicle, or driving hard. most of the miles are from driving on the highway. i have never taken it off roading. *ak
Dt: the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. when pressing the brakes at low speeds the vehicle will not stop, it will go on for a couple of feet until it stops. the dealer gave the contact an estimate of $4000 to replace brakes. this began to occur at 37,000 miles after the warranty expired. the contact has been having this problem for almost two years, and has 56,000 miles on the vehicle now. he feels that this is a manufacturer defect, and he does not want to replace it at his expense. he is filing this complaint in reference to the nhtsa recall campaign 05v379000. *ak (11/09/05) there were times where the vehicle would almost rear-end another vehicle in front of his. *sc
