The rear brake line on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd rusted out and failed while towing my fifth wheel camper.fortunatly the camper brakes were functioning properly and i was able to stop without incident. i removed and replaced the rear brake line when i got the truck home.as i was pumping the brakes to bleed the air out of the new line the right front line failed.it was at this time that i realized how lucky i was to have avoided a potentially deadly incident. upon inspection of the rest of the lines i found them all to be rusted to the point that i will be replacing all of the lines on the truck. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving less than 20 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the abs light illuminated. the vehicle slowed down, but did not come to a complete stop. the brake pedal extended to the floor, but the vehicle did not stop properly. through online research, the contact found nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock); however, her vin was excluded because she does not live in one of the affected states. the contact believes that her vehicle should be included in the recall since the failures are identical. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 119,000.

I own a 2002 chevy 2500 hd and the last couple of months i noticed the anti-lock brakes activate at low speed. i thought this was related to winter snow/ice but this continues on dry pavement. i called chevy customer service and was advised there were no listed recalls for this vin. found nhtsa recall 05v379000 & action # pe05020 lists exact symptoms of vehicle every time breaks are applied at low speed. estimated time and cost to repair 2 hours at aprox $180.00 a chevy dealer was called and i was advised they cannot repair without authorized recall per the vin. this safety issue should apply to the listed vin. *tr

Dear nhtsa, i was reading this article (i.e. link http://trucks.about.com/b/2010/04/08/brake-line-corrosion-suspected-in-gm-trucks.htm) and this prompted me to contact you. i have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500 pickup truck. due to corroded and excessive rusted-out brake lines, i experienced total brake line failure causing me to get into an accident. this happened in november of 2008 and; i only had 50,825 miles on my vehicle at the time. luckily for me, i was (for the most part) in stop and go traffic. if i wasn't, i truly believe things could have been much worse resulting in severe injury or death. this happened on route 495 north, a three-lane highway near lowell massachusetts. as it was, i rear-ended a pickup truck in front of me that subsequently hit the vehicle in front of her. fortunately... no one was seriously hurt. i don't even want to think what might of happened if i was doing 65 - 70 mph and had to avoid another vehicle or brake quickly. i contacted gm about this but never received a reply back. my total failure of brakes was verified at the scene by the tow truck driver (certified ma mechanic), the state police person, my insurance company, and lannan chevrolet of lowell who had to replace every bit of brake line(s). *tr

Upon braking pedal went to floor. rusted, pitted main brake line from master cylinder to abs pump. no brakes. line repaired. when bleeding brakes another line burst. all lines very rusted and pitted. all replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. the contact was driving 25 mph when the brakes were applied and failed. the failure caused the contact to crash into another vehicle. there were no injuries. a police report was filed and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the dealer confirmed that the brake lines were corroded and needed replacement. the manufacturer was not contacted, but the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 114,000.

When stepping on brakes at a low speed, i have very little braking. few times caused me to come very close to vehicle in front of me. looked up on internet problems for this vehicle & found recall 05068c. called chevy & they said vehicle does not have recall for brakes. *tr

Brake line failure on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd. i was very fortunate that the line broke at home while i was parking my trailer. apparently there is a major problem with the steel lines rusting out prematurely. if you go on the web and look up brake line failure for this year vehicle, you will find many. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while driving approximately 40 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle would vibrate when the brake pedal was depressed. the failure occurred on several occasions while braking at less than 10 mph. several mechanics stated that he needed to replace the front wheel speed sensors located in the hub. the manufacturer has not been notified. the vehicle has not been repaired or properly diagnosed. the current mileage was 49,080 and failure mileage was 47,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving approximately 5 mph on normal road conditions, the contact heard a loud grinding noise when the brake pedal was depressed. there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the failure was related to the antilock brake system. the vehicle has not been repaired. the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 51,000 and current mileage was 53,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while driving approximately 20 mph and approaching a stop sign, the antilock braking system began to pulsate when the brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was unable to stop and the failure persisted. the contact took the vehicle to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the failure was due to corrosion of the antilock brake system. she was informed that there was a recall for this specific component and was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer stated that her vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the manufacturer confirmed that the vehicle was excluded and stated that they were not liable for the repairs. the current mileage was 38,000 and failure mileage was 37,000.

Brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs control unit and from the abs control unit to the front wheel brakes are rusted through. this occurred on june 9, 2008. the vehicle is only six years old and the brake line should not rust through that quickly. this is a dangerous condition as all of the brake fluid is pumped out of the master cylinder and you then lose all braking on the vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500. the contact stated that the front rotors are rusting. the rear rotors also rusted, but they were replaced under warranty. the current mileage was 27,129 and failure mileage was 14,000. updated 09/29/08. *lj

2002 silverado k2500hd, antilock brakes engage under 15 mph. have done this everytime i stopped since i bought it 1/11/08. i am told there is no recall on my truck, just the 1500 silverado. truck is doing the same thing as the recall for the smaller truck. *tr

2002 chevrolet k2500hd , the anti-lock brakes activate at slow speeds during gentle braking. same trouble as described in nhtsa campaign # 05v379000 / chevy recall # 05068. i have the same symptoms as described in this document but my dealer and the gm cust. serv. line both advise that my truck is not included in the recall. service manager at local chevrolet dealership said $230 for the same work as stated in the recall plus $80 for each sensor if they break when being removed which they seem prone to do. or he said that i could pull the fuse to the abs system, but they could not. gm customer service contact said they could not help with the break problem but offered a coupon for other service ie> oil change. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while applying the brakes at 5 mph, the brake pedal would pulse and grind. two to three seconds later, the vehicle would stop. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa recall number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the current mileage was 22,000 and failure mileage was 21,000. updated 02-01-08 *bf updated 02/01/08 *tr

2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd. steering box failure. vehicle has had a "clunking" noise in the gear box since new, with the steering off center to the 2 o'clock position. dealer has remedied several times by greasing the box. took in for service on same problem. dealer found the steering box was broken and appeared to have been since new. grease was full of rust. dealer replaced under extended warranty. charged me to remove after market plow equipment. anti lock brake failure. 2nd occasion. brakes failure at low speed. dealer refused to correct under extended warranty. per gm this is not covered under recall nhtsa campaign # 05v379000 & is a "service" item. cost over $300 to clean. *tr

When applying the brakes when coming to a stop, the antilock brake system activates, causing the vehicle to take much longer to stop, and feel as though it may not stop. the problem became progressively worse and was a safety issue which needed to be corrected. although this problem is well documented for chevy vehicles (case #05v379000), we did not receive a recall notice. we took the vehicle to a dealer, who confirmed that the vin was not one of those recalled. i called chevy, who also confirmed that the vin was not included in the recall. because it was a safety hazard which could have resulted in an accident, we had the vehicle fixed. the dealer charged us to correct it, with the same exact solution as in the recall. the antilock brake sensors were removed, cleaned and put back in, correcting the problem. it seems as though the 2002 chevy silverado hd pickup was excluded from the recall, even though the same problem exists as in the other silverado pickups. it is even more of a safety hazard since it is a heavier truck. chevy needs to recall all of the vehicles that have this same problem, or at least cover the expenses for those who bring it in for service for the same issue as recalled in other vehicles. *tr

Corrosion of brake lines on a 2002 chev 2500hd, failure in winter of 06, line repaired. failure in winter of 08, line repaired. in 08 all lines show signs of flaking, delaminating and corrosion. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated when slowing the vehicle to a stop, the abs system failed when the vehicle slowed to 10 mph and caused the pedal to vibrate badly and the vehicle continued forward motion for another 5-10 feet. the service dealer repaired the problem. the manufacturer was notified.

Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at low speeds, the abs activated and there was an increased stopping distance without warning. the vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop who determined the abs wheel sensors needed to be replaced. there was a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin. the manufacturer was alerted. updated 11/30/2006 - *nm

Anti lock brakes activate at low speeds on dry roads and increase stopping distances. this issue is addressed by recall 05068a and 05v379000. my vin is listed however the chevrolet dealer that i went to advised that it is not covered under the recall. i am concerned that an accident will result from this defect. *nm

2002 chevy hd ext cab. i took my pickup to a gm dealer because i knew there was a recall for this issue. they told me that my pickup was not included in the recall. the brakes shift into abs when coming to a stop all the time. it is clear that their is an issue with the abs braking systems in pickups in the northern regions due to salt, stated in the recall for newer models. i called gm customer service and they told me that the 2002 pickups are not yet included in the recall. this is a safety issue that should be resolved by chevrolet. please help!! *jb

I have a 2002 chevrolet 2500 4x4. i noticed the rear brakes were getting very hot. i pulled the rear wheels and noticed the rotors had rust pits in them which i believe caused the brake pads to wear prematurely. the front pads and rotors are fine. i had the rear rotors machined and replaced the brake pads. *nm

Dt: the brake rotors pitted, corroded, rusted, and flaked. the brakes have been serviced, and the mechanic said that other rotors have been corroding as well. the rotors don't show signs of a problem until the metal has worn down. the consumer contacted general motor and said the were very rude.*ak

Gm wants me to pay for a recall repair on my vehicle. *nm

The driver of the 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd i am filling this report about had to slow the vehicle down quickly from 65 mph. apon applying the anti-lock brakes the front wheels locked. (skidding) causing loss of directional control of the vehicle. despite the driver's efforts, since not having directional control of the vehicle, she was unable to keep it from striking another vehicle and a utility pole. this crash resulted in a total lose of the 2002 chevrolet as well as additional property damage, totaling approximately $40,000. personal injury loss in excess of well over $5,000. there was also a failure of the srs, the driver's airbag did not deploy.*ak

The power steering pump shaft has failed. as a result the vehicle's brakes failed and steering became impossible. please provide additional information. *nlm

Brakes failed to stop the truck (brake pedal goes all the way to the floor in an emergency situation) i took the truck back to the dealer and they found the hydro boost to the brakes to be leaking fliud. they replaced the part, it helped the brakes some but did not take care of the problem. the problem is when you are on a pothole or washboard road and use the brakes the pedal will go all the way to the floor and will not stop the truck at all. when you stop on a smooth road the brakes seem to work fine. tthe only other thing that is a real concern to me is when you are just sitting in the truck wether it is running or not you can push on the brake pedal with little effort and it will go all the way to the floor. i have taken the truck to two different dealers to try and get my problem solved. the mechanics agree that it shouldn't do what its doing but can't find the problem. there are times when it is dargerous to drive the truck . *ak

When the brakes were applied, the pedal traveled to the floor, and the vehicle failed to stop. *jb *ts

While driving at 45-50 mph and upon coming to a three way stop sign brakes failed, and consumer collided head on into an embankment. the impact caused seat belts to become undone, and air bags did not deploy. consumer sustained a broken sternum and facial fractures. manufacturer and the dealer have been informed of the problem.*ak
