We have classified the 30 complaints from 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Started by vehicle with remote start. rear window defrost was on. i did hear some crackling noise by the window, but after getting things around forgot about it. 20 minutes or so into my drive i started to smell something hot/electrical. noticed the rear defrost was still on so i shut that off too see if that was causing the hot smell. moments later the section of rear window on the drivers side exploded with a loud bang. all the glass in that section was shattered and eventually fell out that back (luckily not inside). i was under motion when it happened, but it was on a smooth road, nothing overhanging above (like lines that could drop ice) and not traffic near me. the glass pattern appear like the glass was blown out, not inward like if it had been impacted by an object.
Erratic steering and slow speed?s jerky car dies ground problem
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving at low speeds, the vehicle stalled and the warning indicator illuminated for the driver to open and close the driver's side window. in addition, the trailer brake indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the contact stated that the failure occurred three times. the failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
When driving vehicle it losses all power, engine, brakes, steering, no dash lights, no controls and shuts off no control of vehicle at all, very unsafe! vehicle was in motion & turning on highway. this has happened several times but keeps getting worse each time and would not restart. happened today 11/29/2019 i let vehicle sit for around 1hr after 1hr past vehicle started like normal. but safety issue need resolved!
The truck will yank the steering wheel back and forth, multiple electrical errors will occur and the engine sometimes dies while the truck is moving at slow speeds and turning. a stabilitrack error shows on the dash. this happens almost daily.this truck is accident free and appears in excellent condition.
The ebcm with bpmv according to the chevrolet dealership is what caused my brakes to lock up and run all the roters and brake pads.they will not cover the cost of this unit, vehical was in motion on a city street
Car stalls and restarts when driving and turning. car won't turn or go. have almost wrecked multiple times. says something about stabilitrak
While turning onto a road, i turned the steering wheel approximately 20% and suddenly the steering wheel kicked back hard nearly breaking my wrist. once i pulled off i was able to repeat the process several times in either direction, i have video of this issue. when it kicked back, i would lose all electrical power to dash instrumentation and also upon power coming back on, i would get stabilitrak errors and the vehicle and traction controlled would be turned off.
While driving at a slow speed, approximately 10 mph preparing to come to a stop on a little used street, the vehicle instantly died. there was no power and no warning at all. all electrical power was gone and the engine was completely off. the instrumentation panel completely lost all power at the same time the engine turned off completely. i turned the ignition off, placed it in park, turned the ignition on and had no power. turned it off again, then back on. the instrumentation panel lit up, gauges went haywire then the display read *open then close driver side window*. i did that, then the vehicle started back up again and has driven normally since. if that were to happen in heavy traffic at high speed, the obvious could occur.
The radio fail to provide audio warning when the key has been left in the ignition and the door is open-door when the driver does not fasten their seat belt ,driver is at greater risk of injury in a crash. driver can't hear when the turn signal and radio when dead .
There was a hissing sound and smoke in the area of the rear power sliding window, i had read about this concern online and was able to shut my rear defroster off before it blew out the back window but not everyone is that lucky. gm has a bulletin about a small water leak in the same area but does not acknowledge that it is related to the rear window shattering. the water leaks in directly onto the power components of the glass, creates a short that overheats the glass, and ultimately ends with the rear glass shattering. i was lucky enough to catch mine before it blew out but that could cause a hazard for anyone sitting in the back seat, i do not feel that there should be a recall but some sort of extended coverage on this component for those who express the same complaint. even if you catch it before the window blows out, the damage from the short is only fixed by replacing the entire rear window assembly (that is what they did to mine). concern could be moving or stationary as long as the rear defroster is in use. link to water leak bulletin: https://gm.oemdtc.com/8793/water-leak-under-back-glass-from-power-sliding-window-2014-2016-chevrolet-silverado-gmc-sierra where the leak is identified is exactly where i saw the smoke come from. more complaints may also be found here: https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/209824-2017-sierra-denali-rear-window-exploded/?page=11
Horn will not sound when depressing steering wheel horn button. the horn will sound when using key fob to lock the doors. this happens when the vehicle is moving and at a stop.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving slow speeds, the steering wheel violently jerked and the vehicle shook and lost power. also, the electronic stability control indicator illuminated. the "parking assist off" and "roll down the side windows" messages were also displayed. the vehicle was taken to knudtsen chevrolet (1900 e polston ave, post falls, id 83854, (208) 664-8107), but they were unable to duplicate the failures. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: [xxx]. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 52,000. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I made a turn at an intersection going 0mph to 10mph (low speed) and the engine shut down. luckily i had a enough momentum to clear the intersection and not get t-boned. i was able to put the vehicle into neutral and start it again to drive off. no dash lights came on and i still had power steering indicating the key was still in the on position. i believe this is not an uncommon problem as there are at least 2 other reports of this happening in the nhtsa data base with this particular trucks year, make and model. that means there are now 3 complaints out of 10 relating to this very problem under the category of engine for this trucks year make and model. there are also more reports of this happening on various forms around the internet but have not been reported to the nhtsa. i bought this vehicle used from a car dealership 2 months ago with 47,000 miles on it and this incident happened at the 50,000 mile mark. i have called the dealer ship to see if there was any know knowledge of this happening to other people or any service bulletins out there relating to this issue but have not received a call back yet.
Happened 2x (3/15/18 & 10/31/18) in motion @ 70mph on highway the instrument cluster reset. gauges dropped to 0, pegged out at top, then began reading properly, similar to the vehicle starting. all other screens went black and reset themselves. no warning lights came on. this is similar to nhtsa document 2014-03896 on 2014 gm silverados, but appears to be different root cause. my vehicle had a phone plugged in and android auto in use, but i was not changing volumes or songs. also, the first time it happened was when a phone call came in.
Makiing a turn the steering locked and engine died 2 times and yesterday while diving on the freeway at 70 miles per hour it died and managed to pull off the road. first time we allmost got hit by an other car . im very, very concern . truck has 19k miles
The stabilitrak has been going off at random times, several times in a row. twice, over the span of two days, the stabilitrak has gone off while in motion, pulling into a parking spot on dry ground. it has also gone off about 4 times back-to-back while at slow speeds on an on ramp. the main display has also been randomly shutting off (screen goes black) without warning or obvious reason.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet silverado 1500. a neighbor alerted the contact that the vehicle was on fire. upon inspection, the contact noticed flames. the fire department was called and extinguished the fire. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was not towed. a determination of whether the vehicle was destroyed was not determined. a dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact that they would need to go through his insurance company. there were no injuries. the failure mileage was approximately 10,000. the vin was not provided.
I've had nothing but issues with this truck from day 1 drove off the lot with 3 miles. 5000 miles power inverter shorts out. then the windshield washer motor. my 18 month old was in the the vehicle with me smokes up the interior with electrical smoke. a month after shorted out fuel injector. radio works when it wants to. have video to back up. gm flies out some engineers to look at truck instead of looking at the whole picture these dumb [xxx] are looking at the radio!!!. cox chevy of bradenton florida is nothing but a bunch a lying pieces of [xxx]. [xxx] will not let you talk to the owners. they are liars will cheat you in anyway they can!!!. service people can't duplicate issue stated when it happens video the problem and show us what a [xxx] joke. Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle began to hesitate when the brake pedal was depressed. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to st clair chevrolet buick gmc (located at 3050 king rd, china township, mi 48054, (810) 637-1546), but they were unable to duplicate the failure. the failure continued. the contact had both rearview mirrors and the back up camera replaced, and an unknown sensor and the vacuum bag were reprogrammed twice. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 19v645000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 17,967.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet silverado 1500. while operating on an incline, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. the failure occurred without warning. kenny ross chevrolet buick gmc (located at 11250 us-30, north huntington, pa) was contacted and updated the software and transmission. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 18,025.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that there was an internal electrical failure that was progressing. two dealers were contacted: brad deery auto group (844-877-2770, located at 112 n 2nd st, maquoketa, ia 52060) and an unknown dealer were unable to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v084000 (electrical system). the contact also stated that there was a burning odor and the radio failed to function properly. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.
Upon accelerating after traffic light, power fails, steering locks following grinding clanking sound in steering column. also occurs same symptoms in attempt to move gear shift to park position. more frequent doing this procedure. key moves by itself to originally input position in process of locking steering. this defect occurred eight times within five days, requiring towing, and being stranded. vehicle delivered by tow service to nearest chevy dealer on first few failures, vehicle returned to original dealer 230 miles away near owners home at cost of owner. original dealer believes defect is potentially lignition locking system, attempting to verify at this period. this major safety issue of loosing power and systems locking up jeopardize occupants and others lives.again occurrences were at very low speed or in motion of parking.
Ongoing safety issue...vehicle looses power, steering, braking, all other devices inactive, driving safety of occupants and others relevant when driver has no control due to defect. chevy mechanics believe might be steering system such as ignition and locking elements, due to grinding noise before vehicle looses power and other parts lock up, chevy techs thought might be race and pinion, might be electrical, might be whatever, they are unable to conclusively determine this critical safety defect in truck. chevy techs have commented they are skeptical about letting anyone drive until resolved. investment hugh with loss of use and finding other transportation. why own it. gm needs to reimburse cost and replace. this is a significant liability. all aspects of non functioning parts don't generate error codes, and this incident has reoccurred over eight times in five days. this requires action by gm, where is it. loaner vehicle not sufficient replacement for investment. safety issue commenced on march 16, towed multiple times, been to two dealers, initial more than 200 miles from home, and current dealer where purchased with 25 miles of home.
All forms of sound on the vehicle stops, for example the radio shuts off, turning signals work but no sound, door sounds, seatbelt alarm etc. none of these sounds work. this happens on random occasions while driving and sometimes it fixes itself on other occasions the vehicle has to be turned of or the battery reset. supposedly it was already resolved when taken to the dealer but the issue still continues.

Vehicle intermittently loses all electrical controls: power steering, engine power, stabilitrak, airbags. all electrical systems are compromised and the vehicle loses all power. once the vehicle is turned off and back on a few times it will go into a 'limp mode'. i've been stranded in the vehicle 4 times. i have had this happen twice while driving down the freeway, once driving in a parking lot, and twice when first starting the vehicle. during one incident on the freeway i was in the center lane and lost all engine power, airbags, safety controls, and power steering. i was able to coast and make my way over to the shoulder. gm and the dealership have been unable to resolve the issue and are now refusing to honor the warranty, replace the vehicle, or refund the purchase. this has been a serious safety issue. i've had my wife and two small children in the vehicle when it has died on the freeway. not only is it a significant danger to myself and my family, but any other vehicles in close proximity. as such i have refused to drive the vehicle any longer, but gm seems intent on ignoring this.
The 2016 silverado has a programming issue for the transmission. when i drive under a load going up a hill it chugs like i have a miss fire issue. the programming is set so it stays in the highest gear for to long when driving in city conditions. it stays in 6th gear going 25-30mph and when you need the throttle. the transmission can't decide which gear to be in. on two different occasions i went to pull out of a side road onto a main road and the truck fell flat on its face like i hit a kill switch and it all most caused me to get t-boned. i hit the throttle multiple times before it decided it was going to 100% throttle and have me going out sideways onto the main road. i have taken it to the dealer and they have confirmed it to be a programming issue, but there is no fix from gm and the dealer can't do anything with it because of epa laws, but there are aftermarket tuners that address this very issue and fixes the problem and also voids warranty of the truck. it's had the issue since the 2nd week i've owned it from new. the dealer told me to keep calling gm to complain, but all gm does is send me to the dealer. where i'm told there is nothing that can be done. it is an ongoing issue and is only a matter of time before it causes an accident or death if it hasn't all ready. i have 30 years of experience in the auto technician field and my family combined over 100 years. you know the issue is bad when a beginner driver notices the issue. if you have a local person. i'd be more than happy to take them for a ride to show them. for when this happened. it started in 2nd week of july to present. it only had around 300 miles when it started.
Gm wireless charging in my 2016 silverado isn't comparable with any modern devices. it only works with their recommended devices which wasn't stated when i bought the truck new from the dealership.
