Problems with 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 105 580 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Going out of drive brake pedal went to floor. later turned out to be a brake line ruptured from being corroded. truck rolled backwards and struck a tree causing minor damage to the bumper. not reported to insurance because deductible higher than damage. this failure of the break line happened once before in 10/2009. luckily no injuries but the number of these incidents point to a hazardous flaw that gm should address. *tr

I was leaving my parents house sunday night august 24, 2014 and when i applied the brakes for the stop sign my brake pedal went clean to the floor before i felt any braking action. my brake light/alarm went off inside the cab of my truck at this time saying i need to service my brakes. thank goodness it was late at night and they wasn't any traffic. after inspecting the brake lines, the rear steel brake line burst on the drive side and spewed all of my rear brake fluid onto the pavement. *tr

Brake lines rusted severely. no fluid leaks or failures yet, but i went ahead and bought new brake lines from gm dealership to replace before the lines fail. severe rust, approximately half of the thickness of the lines is gone due to rust. *tr

Brake pedal went to floor in parking lot and "check brake system " warning light came on. was able to stop using parking brake. found all brake lines severely rusted and brake fluid leak under drivers side door. *tr

I was traveling east on a roadway in the township where i live, at approximately 45 mph. when i went to apply my brakes on my 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 pick-up truck and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and " i had no brakes!" i nearly crashed into another vehicle that was traveling thru the intersection. i was near my home and was able to travel slowly home and discovered that the driver's side brake line, near the rear (bed area) of the truck had exploded due to a high volume of rust in which i discovered that entire brake line was completely rusted. brake fluid had spewed everywhere. i feel that this definitely is a major safety issue and that people could be injured or killed due to the issue. i have been doing some research and have learned that this is becoming a huge issue with gm trucks and light duty trucks. this should not be a "normal wear issue" for a 2003 model. *tr

8/21/14- left work at 5pm, approaching an intersection to make a right turn, traveling approximately 20 mph, applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. safely turned, pulled off the road and stopped vehicle. found brake fluid pooling on the road under bed of pickup. found a badly rusted and blown out rear brake line. had truck towed home, replaced all of the brake lines with aftermarket stainless steel pre bent lines as every single one of them was rusted. i also had to replace both front calipers as they too were so rusted that the bleeder screws broke off as i tried to open them. total cost for me doing all of the repairs was over $500.00 how can gm consider this problem "normal routine maintenance" ? belt's ,hoses, lights, brake pads, they are normal routine maintenance items, not brake lines. *tr

I was approaching the intersection and the light turned yellow i tried to slow down and my brakes went directly to the floor not able to a stop, i speed up little to make it thru the light and pulled over in to a vacant lot to i came to a stop. then the abs light came on and service brakes system popped up. i got out my truck was leaking brake fluid from driver side under the driver seat. brake lines busted. *tr

I had just pulled of the interstate and was traveling down a small road . i pressed the brake pedal to slow down to make a left turn. the pedal went all the way to the floor.thankfull there was no traffic in front of me. once emergency brakes eventually brought me to a stop,i got out the truck and noticed a pool of brake fluid on the road. to my surprise the metal brake lines had completely rusted through . thank god i wasn't on the highway when this happened. *tr

I applied the brakes to stop at a stop sign in a parking lot. the brake pedal went to the floor. i went through the stop sign. another vehicle had to slam on its brakes to avoid hitting me. the emergency brake is useless for stopping the vehicle in this type of situation because its foot pedal is positioned so high you cannot step on it in time. the problem was caused by failure of a rusted through steel brake line that ran from the abs module to the rear of the vehicle. it provided the hydraulic pressure for both rear brakes.the point where it rusted through is above the gas tank cover and not visible for inspection. i realize that the truck is 11 years old and has been used in the northeast but it does not have any serious body rust and has received reasonable care. it also has relatively low mileage. the "dual diagonal brake system" did not function to provide adequate braking action. it provided no noticeable braking action. this is about as serious a safety defect as i can imagine. i am lucky it happened at low speed and i was not involved in a collision. *tr

Rusted brake lines caused brake line to burst and no longer function. *tr

I was approaching md highway 97 on nicodemus road when i depressed the brake pedal, which went to the floor with no braking effect. fortunately no vehicle was coming as i could not stop. the parking brake was insufficent for stopping the truck. i finally had to put the transmission in reverse to stop. one of the brake lines near the abs unit had burst due to rust. all of the lines at that location were rusty. i replaced all lines with stainless steel lines from an after-market supplier. i see that the fuel lines near that location are also rusty and will need to be replaced.

Traveling at about 20 mph into a congested intersection applied the brakes and the pedal gave normal resistance, the about a second later went right to the floor. i was able to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. thinking my brake fluid was low, i added 12 oz of dot 3 fluid, pumped the brakes several times and discovered that all the fluid was pouring out of the rear brake lines. had to have the vehicle towed to get it home. upon daylight inspection found that all of the rear lines on the truck were in a rusted condition. *tr

I was getting ready to stop at a red light when the brakes on the truck failed. the pedal went straight to the floor when pressed. after parking the truck and looking at the brake line (metal line) above the rear-end had rusted causing the tube to weaken and crack. *tr

My wife and daughter was with me and i was towing my brother in laws small tractor on my dad's tandem axle trailer. we had already drove about 20 miles and coming up to their house turn off. i turned into there driveway and started to turn so we could then back up the trailer to his barn to unload his tractor. the truck stopped perfectly but the brakes felt weird at that point so when completely stopped i put into park then we got out of the truck and unloaded the tractor and when we was unloading the tractor i went up to the cab of the truck and opened the door because i was going to step on the brake pedal so the front brakes would help hold my truck in place when the weight of the tractor hit the back of the trailer which in turn would make the rear of my truck really light. when i hit the pedal it went all the way to the floor absolutely no pedal at all. then i noticed the smell of brake fluid then looked under the truck and sure enough brake fluid everywhere right underneath the driver side door. i crawled under the edge of the truck just a bit and notice all the brake lines right there in one area but the one had busted/split. so i kind of notice all the other ones all in that area were really rusted up some as well. it almost in that area only looked as if the truck had 200,000 miles on it but just on the brake lines nothing else. needless to say i only have two vehicles and i worked in two days so i went to my local autoparts store and bought what i thought would be enough to fix the truck. got home and started in on it. and realized i didn't have one fitting i needed so luckily for me my dad was already out and he picked up what he thought was the part. needless to say when he got to my place the parts they gave him wasn't the correct parts. *tr

Without warning, leaving my driveway, my husband was on his way to pick our 2 year old up from the babysitter and the brake pedal went to the floor. a warning alarm simultaneously alerted me of the brake failure. thankfully, this happened in our driveway on the way to pick up our child! i can't imagine the potential tragedy had it happened on the road. upon inspection of the brake lines, they were seriously rusted and practically crumbled in my husband's hands. *tr

While approaching a left turn and applying the brakes to slow from 45 mph the brake pedal depressed all the way to the floor with little force in the middle of the braking process. the vehicle was rolling at approximately 15 mph when this occurred. the vehicle was able to slow down and stop using the emergency brake and shifting into park. after inspection of the underside of the vehicle there was a small hole in the rear drivers brake line approximately 3 inches ahead of the union joint joining the flexible brake line t to the steel brake line running from the abs unit. the remaining portion of the line as well as the remaining brake lines appeared to be severely corroded and in need of replacement. *js

Driving truck out of parking area at house entering street and both brake lines supply to abs broke. this left me with no brakes to front or back. just enough brake fluid to slow down to make the turn back into parking area behind my house. had to use parking brake to fully stop truck. called for a flat bed truck to haul my truck to local auto shop to have brakes repaired. the whole brake system lines had to be replaced ,corrosion problem !. $1000 brake line repair. could have been a very dangerous time if i was on the busy street one more block farther in my travel.second time brake line broke on this truck. ^ months ago replaced one line on back brake, same problem.now lines under drivers cab both broke under pedal stress. this should never happen on both lines. had many other trucks and cars and never saw such poor quality brake lines. if this happened on highway i may not be able to tell about it.wife was in truck also and pulling a 14ft boat.any damages or bodily injury would be put on gm and their faulty product selection of brake lines. should be a recall years ago. thousands of gm truck owners have problems. members of my family have had same brake line problems. only 70,000 miles on truck. *tr

Girlfriend was driving vehicle with a 700 lb load in the back on rt. 44. she was slowing down to make a left turn when the brake pedal went to the floor. she pumped the brake several times and was able to turn off rt. 44 onto a side street. while proceeding down street there were limited brakes. when she came upon our street she used the emergency brake to slow down to make a right turn. she again applied this method to take a right turn into our driveway. once in the driveway she told me there are no brakes in the truck. i got in the truck and applied the brakes and heard a spraying sound coming from the left front. i got out and saw brake fluid around the wheel well and dripping on the ground from the brake line. *tr

Traveling north on 95 just outside of wilmington delaware in middle travel lanes when stopping for traffic and brake pedal went completely to floor. had to veer to the left and travel onto medium to avoid accident. i checked under truck and observed brake line leaking fluid under drivers side. *tr

I experienced loss of braking and parked vehicle and noticed fluid under left rear axle area. brake line was leaking. i do not think a ten year old truck should have this problem. *tr

I was backing out of a parking space when i found i had absolutely no brakes. repair mechanic said both front and rear brakes are rusted out. i had to be towed to a repair shop. *js

This is the 2nd time i have lost my brakes. thank god both times were at low speeds. this 2nd time occurred in a drive thru restaurant. as i applied my brakes the car in front of me had just left with there order otherwise i would have rear ended them. i then drove very short distance using my emergency brake. please recall an fix this problem. ..its the right thing for gm to do. *js

Driving up to red light. began to brake. pedal went all the way to the floor. ended up going through the red light. luckily oncoming traffic saw me and stopped. under further inspection the brake lines were rusted through and brake fluid was leaking out. same thing happened to my fathers 2003 silverado 3 weeks earlier. *tr

Made a semi-hard stop, due to a car pulling in front, brake line failed. there were no brakes at all the rest of the way home. my 15 year old son was driving, this could have very easily been a horrible accident. *tr

Luckily we were pulling out of the driveway when the brakes went out on the truck. went all the way to the floor. if this had happened a week earlier while we (my family of 4) were traveling on rt 70 hauling a golf cart we and/or another family may have suffered severely or possibly died because of rusty, corroded brake lines. we live in maryland, have service at local chevy dealer and maintain our vehicles which includes washing/cleaning the vehicle, so there is no reason that at 107000 miles the brake lines should have corroded. our estimate for repair of brakes/brake lines is 1681.00. we will get the vehicle fixed but after reading other reports about chevy trucks and brakes i thought it would be a good idea to send in my complaint. luckily no lives were lost but gm should consider a recall before they get slapped with law suits. *tr

On wed, june 25th approximately 11:30 pm i had to stop quickly due a stop light changing on me and i felt my brake pedal get "squishy" when trying to stop. i verified this when i tried stopping at the next light and the pedal sunk even further and it took even longer to stop. by the time i got home my brakes were about useless for any speed over an idle as the pedal went all the way to the floorboards when pressed. luckily it was late at night and there were very few cars on the road, so i did not need to stop quickly. i then looked under my truck and found both of the brake lines heavily corroded/rusted in a spot just behind my front driver's side wheel. i had my wife press on the brake pedal while i was watching the lines and at least one of them had blown open and was squirting fluid. i subsequently had to get my truck towed to my mechanic as it was not drive-able. and to top it all off, the required parts had to be ordered directly from the dealer increasing my repair bill. and after talking with my mechanic, he stated that when he called the dealer for the parts, they knew exactly what was needed as they have had to do these same repairs numerous times. luckily this did not happen while my daughter was using my truck to haul her horses around as i do not think she would have been able to stop at all with that extra weight behind her trailer brakes or not. *tr

Traveling 25 miles home on interstate van had been cutting out if i pull over stop wait, can re-start and go a while. cant predict it seemed to stay running if i went faster big mistake moved to pass it quit, at interstate speeds almost had to go into medium after yelling and waving arms and praying i got back into the right lane pulled off onto shoulder and went to pieces. it then stopped more and more finally got home and have not touched it since. i have been reading about similar events and it seems it is the crankcase positioning sensor. i am just happy to be alive. need to fix it and sell it. thanks for listening i am senior citizen. *tr

Excessive corrosion all brake lines rotted out and replaced, rocker panels totally rotted, and excessive rust on frame very common with this year g m frame ,g m says they only cover for one year. so i am filing a complaint to see if this can rectified before some one is injured due to brake failure. please help. *tr

Driving on i271 northbound, heading to 77n, left lane of highway. the weather was clear, the road was dry. i was doing 70 -72 mph. speed limit on 271 is 70. driver in right lane suddenly decided to switch to left lane, cutting immediately in front of car in front of me. driver in front of me slammed on her brakes very hard. i also had to hit brakes, but not quite as hard, as i had some space. as i hit the brakes, they immediately went to the floor. the only choice i had to avoid slamming into her, was swerve left into the median, all the while pumping the brakes hoping for something. but there was nothing. i managed to keep the truck from fishtailing in the grass, straightened out, passed the woman who i almost rear ended, and thankfully was able to get back on the highway, but still no brakes. i eventually got to the side of the road, and coasted to a stop.i was very lucky---there was road construction coming up with signs in the median,and traffic barrels in the road, and this all happened within a mile of that area. had my truck towed to firestone, and they told me both brake lines going to the abs unit blew out. if gm wants to save money by using cheap material, it should be on non safety related parts, not something as serious as brake components. as the average age of most vehicles on the road today is 10 yrs., car manufacturers should be forced to manufacture or use parts, esp., parts as brakes, that will last a lot longer than that. *js

Was leaving store near my home and brake pedal went completely to floor no brakes what so ever drove home using emergency brake on inspection found leaking brake line in rear of truck then inspected all other lines and found them very rusted as well they need to be replaced before they leak. *tr

came out of store ,started vehicle brake warning lite and chimes came on .brake pedal was all the way to the floor with very little stopping power. drove vehicle to the repair shop (a short distance) was told the steel brake lines had rusted through contaminating the system the complete brake system was replaced. the total repair bill was $1823.86. *tr

I approached an intersection where my traffic light signal was red and i had sudden loss of braking in my 2003 silverado c1500, with no prior indication or warning lights. the brake pedal went very low and i could not stop my vehicle before entering the intersection. i steered to the right of two waiting cars in front of me and came to a stop in the intersection beyond the light. fortunately there were no vehicles coming at that moment on the 4 lane highway crossroad so a crash was avoided. all of the brake and fuel lines were inspected after the incident and found to be heavily corroded (rusted), with the rear brake line leaking about 2 inches from where it exits the abs unit under the cab. the master cylinder fluid level was normal and there were never any previous leaks, warning lights, or problems like this and i am the original vehicle owner. the visible level of corrosion seems extreme on the brake and fuel lines on this vehicle. had i been in an accident, i would be concerned that fuel lines could also leak and increase the likelihood of a fire due to their likewise poor condition due to extreme rust. *tr

While driving, my brakes suddenly started going soft. i started pumping the brakes without any improvement. i was in a panic because i was about to pull into traffic with my bass boat. i wasn't sure i would be able to stop, i hit my park brake, then brake fail indicator alarms sounded, i used my gear shift jerking it into reverse but hit another car. i had no prior notice or problem. after getting out of emergency care. i opened my hood, and noted the brake fluid reservoir to be completely empty. i took my truck to the shop, and they noted my brake lines to be rusted. to replace it cost me $1270.43. now i see where you investigated this and failed to order recall. why have the nhtsa if you are not going to protect us, the public. *tr

Slowly losing brakes soft brake pedal no warning light. drove to dealer, told me rusty leaking brake lines ' would cost me $991.00 to replace all brake lines. i told them i could not pay that, i ask about a recall with no avail, they let me drive it home, by the time i got there i had no brakes at all, the light finally came. i am the orginal owner. i can not drive this truck, it will have to be towed to dealer service dept. now. *tr

While driving home on 5/1/2014 traffic stopped short. i hit the brakes to stop. the truck stopped ok. traveled about another 2 blocks and when i hit the brake pedel to stop. it went to the floor and i ad no brakes. i hit the back of another car due to not being able to stop, after the truck was towed to repair shop it was found to have rusted, broken brake line. this caused the truck not to stop. the insurance company wound up totaling the truck due to the damage. *tr

Went to back up and brake pedal went to the floor. brake was corroded through and all the fluid leaked out. *js

During commute to work on 22 april 2014, as i was approaching a stoplight and pressed the brakes to slow down, the main console chimed, showed a message to check brakes, and i was able to press the brake lever to the floor. i was still able to stop prior to reaching the stoplight. i slowly returned home (about a mile) and was able to stop the truck nearby, though the brakes were no longer able to stop the vehicle while in drive. when placed on the flatbed tow truck, the driver noticed that the brake fluid was leaking onto the bed. at the dealership, the mechanics stated the brake lines were corroded and the entire system needed to be replaced behind the master cylinder. additionally, i had asked them to inspect why i sometimes had difficulty starting the vehicle which was diagnosed as a faulty fuel pump. this could not be removed from the fuel tank (due to corrosion), and i was forced to replace the entire tank system to replace the pump. *tr

Had to make quick stop and required me to step on brakes fairly hard. blew a brake line and lost all brakes. was able to serve to avoid accident, and then use emergency brake to stop myself. had truck taken to shop, all brake lines were extremely rusted and required replacing. $1000+ job. *tr

Abs light came on at start up did not go out, got back home noticed spongy pedal parked noticed brake fluid leak on ground appears to be leaking from line around abs unit under truck, almost all brake lines are suffering from severe corrosion and need replaced, safety sensitive items such as brake lines need to be better protected from corrosion. *tr

While parked, i put the vehicle into gear and pressed the brake. there was very little brake pressure and my service brake system message activated as well as the brake light. brake fluid is squirting out of a metal brake line in the rear of the truck, just above the driver rear tire. *tr

I started to leave my home and the rear brake line failed. no slow leak, brake pedal went to the floor. no sign of leakage. it completely failed and the line is very corroded. dealer told me 2200.00 to repair. *tr

I was driving on a down hill road with a stop sign at the bottom. i began to press the brake and the pedal went to the floor. i could not get the truck stopped and ended up in an empty field to avoid a wreck with impact. there was a huge wet spot on the street where by brakes failed. very scary with my young children in the truck with me. the brake lines were all rusted and had given way. according to the repair shop (and the internet) this is a known issue with these vehicles. i am also now having an issue with my instrument panel going crazy. the speedometer will say i am traveling 110 when i am rolling up to a stop sign. the fan blower will be on 0 and it will blow out at full force and will not turn off, even after the engine has been turned off. this ultimately results in a dead battery. i have had to have several jump starts. this issue according to my mechanic is a "known issue" with this vehicle. however, my vin # produces no results for recalls. so like my silverado break down on the side of the road issues, the search results have left me stranded as well, only this time i am not walking down the road with my small children. *tr

Had a total brake failure while pulling into may driveway stopped vehicle with parking brake. metal brake lines had failed all brakes lines were rusted/corroded and the entire system had to be replaced (all metal lines) at a substantial cost. *tr

After making a panic stop, the dashboard brake warning light came on alerting me to have brakes serviced. pulled in to parking lot (after the light) and found brake fluid dripping from under the truck from the brake lines leading into the abs controller and from a sharp bend in the line that operates the rear axle. lines had rusted and leaked brake fluid. *tr
