We have classified the 7 complaints from 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 about EQUIPMENT into the following categories.
The 2003 silverado 1500 short bed pu u-joints keep going out. have replaced them atleast 6 times. pu had 30,000 when purchased in 2006. there has to be something in the build of the pu that is causing this problem, don't matter what kind of tires i put on the pu it has a vibration all the time. the vibration could be whats causing the u-joints to go out. i have had 10 ply tires on it for off road use and now i'm running highway tires and still have the vibration, so i don't think it has to do with the tires it's more of a design in build problem rether than a mechanical problem i think. *tr

2003 chevy silverado - poor steering- i have replaced the gearing box w/front end alignment due to having 4 estimates and advised that the gear box was defected. 6 months later - i have been advised by several certified mechanics that the gear box that was put in is also defected. poor steering control, truck pulls all over the road which could result in a crash. if the steering boxes for this year/make vehicles are defected, why not compensate the owners for all the expenses. it is obvious that these parts for this year vehicle is in fact defected. how many complaints/accidents/injuries does it take before these issues are acknowledged? i have spent over $1,500.00 just in the braking and steering repairs and yet faced again with more cost or either get rid of my truck that i had for 1 year. *tr
4 times in 58,000 mile the front steering shaft has needed attention. twice under warranty, twice not. paid for correction, 4th time refused to pay as feel it is gm problem since all 2003 chevy. silverados suffer from this. gm has designed a new part but refuse to install unless consumer pays for it. they admitted it is a problem. settled once, they said installed a new part , found out they did not . have referred it to ny state attorney generals office for action, they are presently trying to mediate. since all silverados suffer from steer shaft failure seems to be a major safety problem and should all be recalled to fix. *tr
The speedometer on my 2003 silverado started acting erratic. at first the vehicle speeds were highly inaccurate, i.e. while driving 60 mph on the highway using a gps unit the speedometer showed between 100 and 110 mph. shortly after the hand went to bottom horizontal position and rendered the speedometer useless. i understand from discussion forums on the internet that this is a common problem that is resolved through the replacement of the instrument cluster. possibility of inadvertent wrong choice of speed could become dangerous for vehicle operator and bystanders. *tr
Approx. 2 years ago the instrument panel went out in our chevy silverado tk. at that time there was about 50k mi. on the truck. we could not afford to have the panel fixed. we have been driving the truck as is. we have had many chevy tks. about one mo. ago we received a letter in the mail about chevy products having the same problems as ours. but the stipulations are in our eyes un acceptable. you can have no more than 70k mi. on the vehicle in order for chevy to fix this defect. if they knew of the defect how can there be this kind of stipulation... for those of us in ca, the miles traveled are many more than other states. also the defect in the vehicle does not discriminate. when it happens it happens! the letters were sent out to vehicles that are 2003's. it has already been 5 yrs. we believe there should be a recall on this part. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 45-55 mph, the contact heard a loud noise and noticed a tire in the road. he pulled over and discovered that the spare tire bracket assembly had sheared off. the dealer stated that the 2005 model brackets were defective. the manufacturer would not reimburse him for the spare tire nor for the replacement of the failed bracket. the current mileage was 100,500 and failure mileage was 100,000. updated 01/03/08 . *lj updated 12/31/07
The 2003 chevy silverado has a documented defect on their speedometers and gauges and refuse to correct this if you do not meet a 7yr/70,000 warranty period. the issue has been reported in as few as 28,000 miles to over 150,000 miles. this is an unsafe defect reported by chevrolet that the do not recognize as necessary to cover for everyone. *tr
Rear tail light fills with water and fogs up causing lights to not be seen good...*nm
Consistent knocking noise coming from the steering column. the dealer has regreased the shaft twice with special grease and on the third attempt replaced the whole shaft with an updated version. in less than six months the shaft has begun to knock again. *nm
Complete speedometer failure after off and on problems on my 2003 chevrolet silverado pickup. cannot be inspected now and it costs too much for out of pocket -825.00 to fix it.
when changing a flat tire on a pick up truck the o e m bottle jack collapsed nearly injuring an employee. the base of jack came apart at the four crimped places which re used in place of welds, rivets or bolts. these jacks need to be recalled before someone is killed or seriously injured! we replaced the jack with a hydraulic jack. we still have the failed jack and will take digital pictures of it.*ak *nm
2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 (v6) was apparently designed with the air conditioner evaporator coil situated over the distributor and points. the condensor coil drips moisture onto and into the distributor causing corrosion. this corrosion causes the engine to hesitate and vibrates excessively at acceleration to 45 mph. my new vehicle has already had the distributor and points replaced to "remedy" the situation. the dealership was supposed to wrap the condensor coil with tape which would cause the condensate to drip further into the engine but as it turns out they didn't "get around" to wrapping the coils. as a result, after running the a/c, the engine is hesitating after only 20 miles of driving. they stated the fix is good for as long as the tape holds up. after the warranty runs out, it looks like it will be my problem to pay to replace the distributor every 5 or 10 thousand miles which is unacceptable. so far, i have contacted 4 dealership service departments in the houston area. every service manager has acknowledged the problem exists on all v6 engines for this truck for years 2002 and 2003. the sales staff will not acknowledge they ever heard of such a problem. i am aware of 3 other owners of this vehicle that are having the same problem but their dealers won't acknowledge any problem exists.*ak
Five times truck (17 months old and 21000 miles) has been to dealerships for "service 4 wheel drive" message center indicator, abs light, parking brake light, alarms, and inoperable. also problems with clanking felt through the steering wheel. every time truck was "fixed" by replacing/reprogramming the transfer case module, and lubing of steering column (which manufacture indicates was a poor lube job at construction). problem recurred. now dealership informs that the manufacture issued a tsb that instructs dealerships to not replace modules anymore, as gm is aware of problem and new modules will be not fix the problem. were told that gm engineers are "investigating" it. now, if module fails again, our 4-whhel drive truck will be without 4-wheel drive. date is of first incident. numerous tsbs have been posted concerning these problems, gm does not respond. date indicated is date of first problem at 8000 miles. *ak
