We have classified the 102 complaints from 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
Driving at highway speeds, i hit the brakes to stop for traffic light. brake pedal went to the floor. the "rusted" brake line had cracked open and allowed fluid to escape. no brakes. had to have vehicle towed to my house. this happened today,10/16/2010. it is a 2003 chevy silverado p/u all of the steel lines are rusted. *tr
Corroded front brake lines. also front brake calipers. *tr
Chevrolet silverado 1500 2003 76,000 miles. brakes failed while pulling a 6000lb trailer on an interstate. rusty brake lines burst when brakes were applied while entering a construction zone. had no brakes. if car in front hadn't seen me coming and pulled over, this may have been a fatality report. *tr
I have a 2003 chevy silverado 4x4 ext. cab 4.8l eng. while driving the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and brake fluid was leaking underneath the front of the vehicle. the brake lines were rusted and corroded on the outside. i will be replacing them. i have only 70,000 miles on it. i have owned numerous vehicles and this is the first time i have experienced rusted brake lines. about 5 months ago i had the same problem but on a different brake line on the rear, thank heaven for secondary backup lines. *tr
The rear backing plates on my 2003 silverado completely rotted away and exposed the brakes and disc rotors and calipers to extreme dirt and winter salt. this caused one brake caliper to freeze and both disc rotors to get very badly pitted. i had to replace all the components for both rear brakes at a very expensive cost. i have never experienced something like this in all the years of owning a motor vehicle. *tr
Addendum to 10376833. vin entered below. *tr
Brake line rust-through causing long stopping distances and requiring rapid pedal pumping. loss of fluid required refills to allow the vehicle to be driven to a shop. no collision occurred. cab-back replacement of steel lines took place at a cost of $475. *ln
Total brake failure on 2003 chevrolet silverado with just under 59,000 miles. it coasted to a stop and then i had it towed to the chevy dealer. it has now been there three times in a week. bill says front brake pads thin, front brake rotors badly rusted, replaces front brake pads and both front brake rotors. rear brake pads thin, rear brake rotors badly rusted, replaced rear brake pads and read brake rotors. i picked the truck up and when i got home smelled something very hot. i could not touch the back tires and took it back to the dealer. picked it up again today and drove it and took it back to the dealer with the front wheels hot. they tell me that they have never heard of this happening. i don't know what they will do next to it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was braking from approximately 55 mph when the brake pedal abnormally depressed all the way into the floor. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the brake lines and cylinders were corroded. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired. the failure and current mileages were 40,000.
When attempting to slow my 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 to enter an off ramp, the brake pedal went to the floor and the brakes no longer worked. i barely missed hitting someone and was able to use the parking brake to slow and stop the truck. luckily, i was going up an incline and had room to pull off the main road. i had to tow the truck to my mechanic. upon initial inspection, it was deemed that the brake lines corroded to the point that they blew out. it was also determined that all of the brake lines were corroded. including the tow, the cost of repairs was over $1100. the truck barely had over 20,000 miles at the time. i live in maryland and have owned other vehicles for much longer and with a lot more miles. this type of failure could have certainly resulted in a major accident with multiple injuries or even deaths. i hope this complaint aids in the federal investigation i read about here: http://www.insideline.com/chevrolet/silverado-2500hd/feds-investigating-6-2-million-gm-vehicles-for-possible-brake-problem.html thank you. *tr
Brake lines on rear rusted in half leaking out fluid. *tr

Rusted out brake lines failed fuel lines and power steering look bad also. *tr
Abs brake system engages at slow speeds on dry surfaces causing extended stopping distance. this problem and the fix is the same as described in the nhtsa defect recall of 05v379000. my chevrolet silverado is a 2003 so outside the recall and dealer refuses to take responsibility also have replaced the rear rotors with worst rust i have ever seen on rotor. nearly falling apart. *tr
Brakes have been spongy from the time i purchased and was told this is normal. i have replaced brake pads and rotors front and rear about 3 times since buying truck. truck has always has slow response time to stop again told this is normal. truck has about 65,000 miles and underside looks like a rust bucket. the problem i am having now is abs light comes on and off, pulsating brake petal and abs does not work plus there is a longer stopping distance .told abs sensors are bad and need to be replaced at a cost of about $800 - $1000 dollars again normal?. i believe this is a safety issue for the consumer and general motors say they don't have enough complaints to warrant a recall. how many people have to die or be injured before something is done. it is time for these car manufactures to be accountable and make these vehicles safe. *tr
I have a 2003 chevy silverado with approximately 25,000 miles that the brake lines have rusted prematurely and the dealer is recommending replacement. prior to this i have had numerous brake issues and extended stopping distances, rotors were also previously replaced due to sever rust and spawling. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado. while attempting to brake from any speed, the brake pedal would begin to vibrate abnormally. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 30,000.
Brake line failure in a 2003 chevrolet silverado with approximately 24,000 miles. rear brake line corrosion led to leak and failure of rear brakes. had the truck towed to the shop, where heavy corrosion was found on all three other brake lines. all had to be replaced with specially manufactured stainless steel lines because gm doesn't manufacture them. previously had trouble with the abs system. both speed sensors were faulty; had to be disassembled and replaced. *tr
The steel brake lines are badly rusted, they are not leaking yet but i am concerned. *tr
2003 chevrolet silverado brakes. the abs kick in at low speeds on dry roads. a very soft pedal and sometimes the pedal will go to the floor before stopping. the brought to my dealership many times and they keep saying they can't find the problem. my truck has 42,000 miles and i'm afraid to drive it so it sits in my driveway. *tr
While driving the truck down the street, i attempted to stop for a red light, and the brake pedal went almost to the floor. in order to correct the failure, i had to replace all of the brake lines, front and rear, because they were corroded and posed a safety threat. the total for the repairs was $1810.50. *tr
Wheel speed sensor causing abs to falsely activate at 8 mph. same problem that gm has recalled for 1999-2002 model year of silverado. *tr
Truck lost ability to stop effectively. truck was taken to local repair shop, where mechanic found brake lines had ruptured from corrosion. brake lines were replaced. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado. while driving at 5 mph in a parking lot, with his foot on the brake the anti lock brake system activated, increasing the stopping distance. the failure occurs every time the brakes are engaged. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, no repairs had been made at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 48000. the current mileage was 52154.
Driving down the highway and slowed for an upcoming red light and lost brakes. fortunately the light turned green and nobody was in front of me. my braked line corroded by my driver front tire. contacted chevrolet and had another mechanic company replace the line. *tr
2003 chevy silverado brake lines had to be replaced. 4 lines broke due to corrosion. i total lost all brakes lucky no damage or injuries happen. had over $1200 in repair bills in order to drive the truck again. *tr
Applied brakes hard to miss a stray dog that ran out in the road and brake pedal went to the floor. noticed fluid was leaking from under the truck and found that metal brake lines were rusted through and leaking brake fluid. i am in the process of replacing all 4 of the lines myself and this is proving to be a major undertaking. i am the original owner and my vehicle only has 34,00 miles. i do the general maintenance myself. i went to a chevy dealership to purchase the formed lines and was told that they did not sell the indvidual lines and i would have to make them from a 16 ft. roll of metal lines. they had not heard of a problem or recall. *tr
Recently i went to start up my 2003 chevrolet silverado and the brake pedal went straight to the floor. thinking it was air in the break line i pumped the brakes several times and the brake pedal continued to go straight to the floor. i realized that after inspecting the vehicle break fluid was leaking near the front left wheel. ultimately, i had to have my truck towed to the dealership where the problem was diagnosed as brake line rust/corrosion, and another brake line was also on the verge of failure. i ended up having two brake lines replaced which added up to about $1200, but fortunately i'm a loyal customer at that dealership, so the price was reduced to about $850. currently i only have 44,000 mi on my truck. *tr
My 2003 chevy silverado pick up truck brakes failed three (3) different times in 2010.this happened on a highway and residential streets. the brake line tubing ruptured because of rust and corrosion, leaving me in a very dangerous situation with no brakes. my truck is in an auto repair shop now and all the brake line tubing is being replaced leaving me with no transportation for work and a very large auto repair bill. *tr
2003 chevy silverado lt 1500 4wd ext.cab. brakes changed x2 with 35,000 miles on now. lines rusted causing complete brake failure. abs caused the vehicle total failure to stop. this all happened in approx. one month. i feel very fortunate that i did not kill myself or someone else. cost approx. $600. 35,000 miles. this is a travesty. what are you doing about it???? *tr
Anti-lock brake malfunction causing increased stopping distances. the vehicle will require a longer than normal stopping distance. initially the problem will be intermittent and increase to every time the vehicle is stopped at slow speeds (0-10mph). the sensor on the wheel bearing needs to be removed and cleaned and the mounting surface also needs to be cleaned. *tr
Brake line's completely rusted out resulting in no brakes while driving, luckily was able to coast to a stop without any accident or injury,2003 chevy silverado. i have since learned this is very common. gm needs to be held accountable. *tr
We had complete loss of hydraulic brake system. luckily my wife was in a parking lot when the brake line let go. hydraulic fluid was running out from under the truck. the petal easily went right to the floor, no resistance at all. the dealer asked if we could drive the truck about 10 miles to the shop. we had it flat bedded in. all brake lines were very rusty and all had to be replaced. we do not have old brake lines. *tr
I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado 4x4 pickup and have had to spend $750 to replace brake lines that failed due to corrosion. i read that you are considering a recall and am hopeful that you do to rectify this situation. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. the brake pedal failed to engage when he attempted to shift into drive gear out of the park position. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the ruptured front brake lines were replaced. the failure did not recur. the failure mileage was 57,840 and the current mileage was 62,000.
I started my 2003 chevrolet silverado put my foot on the brake pedal and put it into gear then the brake pedal went to the floor. luckily my e-brake worked. the truck only had 57000 miles on it. i had it towed to the dealer that i purchased it from and they replaced all the front brake lines. i am glad no one was hurt. why did the rust out with low miles? i am reading i am not the only one and some people have been in accidents. the repair cost me $617.00. *tr
Brake line on my 2003 chevy truck rusted and burst while my child and wife where in the car. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. while backing out of the driveway between 3-4 mph, the brakes did not respond when the pedal was depressed. the driver experienced extreme difficulty slowing down the vehicle. immediately, the gear shifter was placed into park and the parking brake was engaged. the vehicle was able to come to a complete stop. there were no prior warnings or injuries. the vehicle is currently inoperative and is in the process of being towed to an authorized dealer for inspection. the failure and current mileages were 70,000. updated 07/14/09 *bf the consumer stated the left front brake line had ruptured. updated 07/16/09.*jb
Abs brake system engages at slow speeds on dry surfaces causing extended stopping distance. this problem and the fix is the same as described in the nhtsa defect recall of 05v379000. my chevrolet silverado is a 2003 so outside the recall and dealer refuses to take responsibility. *tr
Rear brakes drag wearing out rotors 35,000 miles. *tr
Poor braking on chevy silverado k1500. soft pedal since new. garage kept with only 23,000 miles and rear rotors rusted out. when new, chevy mechanics said soft pedal was normal. rarely driven and must be extra careful if pulling a light trailer. just had rear rotors replaced (over $300) and still poor brakes. these should have been recalled... *tr
2003 chevy silverado - poor steering- i have replaced the gearing box w/front end alignment due to having 4 estimates and advised that the gear box was defected. 6 months later - i have been advised by several certified mechanics that the gear box that was put in is also defected. poor steering control, truck pulls all over the road which could result in a crash. if the steering boxes for this year/make vehicles are defected, why not compensate the owners for all the expenses. it is obvious that these parts for this year vehicle is in fact defected. how many complaints/accidents/injuries does it take before these issues are acknowledged? i have spent over $1,500.00 just in the braking and steering repairs and yet faced again with more cost or either get rid of my truck that i had for 1 year. *tr
I am writing in regards to my anti lock baking system (abs) and my steering column. i was nearly involved in an auto accident on dry pavement when my abs system engaged and then dis-engaged at a speed of less than 10 mph. when steering to the right to avoid the accident, my steering column had a strange vibration/loud humming noise. my antilock brakes engaged while i was slowing to swerve to miss the oncoming vehicle and then my abs stopped working and my abs warning light along with my parking brake (p) warning light came on. now, since that day (2 days ago), my steering column still makes noises when i turn to the right and my abs system continues to engage at slow speeds when stopping even on dry pavement. i have been told by a gm dealership that the two issues that i am experiencing are not on a recall list but are common problems with my vehicle. they further advised that since my vehicle is no longer under warranty, i would have to pay for these malfunctions. i was told by an independent mechanic that the above issues are safety issues and gm is aware of the problems. with the above being said, i feel that my issues with the abs system and the steering column are safety issues and gm should be addressing these issues before someone is seriously injured or killed. i need to get these issues corrected on my vehicle, however, i do not feel that i should be liable for these repairs when gm is aware of the issues and nothing has been done to remedy the problem. *tr
