Problems with 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SERVICE BRAKES

Started to leave house to go grocery shopping, started vehicle applied brake to out auto into gear, brakes pedal went to the floor, check fluid level was o.k. recheck braking, same result, no brakes. after checking notice signs of brake fluid at areas beneath vehicle at driver door. called for tow truck the following morning. if i had gotten to hywy. us 1. and this problem happen, i fear there would have been a terrible accident involving myself, or others. waiting for word from auto shop of what the problem could be. this is very serious safety issue with this and other trucks. *js

Brake problem with abs. vehicle did not stop correctly almost causing accident. after researching found recall for abs wheel issue for other states but not texas. vehicle was manufactured in canada. *tr

I was driving and when i went to stop the brake pedal went to the floor and the truck took a long time to stop. the brake failure was caused by rusted brake lines which allowed the brake fluid to leak out. one line was rusted all the way through and several other were badly rusted. *tr

Coming to a stop light and lost all brakes. further inspection revealed that rear brake lines are rusted through. all other lines are severely rusted. including fuel lines. *tt

Without warning total brake failure. luckily more road to go down. brake line rusted through. *tr

Brake fluid leak, loss of brakes / failure due to brake line corrosion. *tr

Pulling out of a gas station ..break lines ruptured and i drifted out into the road before being able to stop. car was able to stop with a lot of breaking force. *js

Stepped on brake peddle at idle and pedal went to the floor. upon taking it to the repair shop, found that the brake lines were completely rusted out and the caliper bleeders were rusted off. all lines, calipers, and two rotors had to be replaced - cost $2,091. *tr

Stepped on brakes to stop when blowing snow reduced my visibility, and the brake pedal went to the floor. the brake lines were severely corroded and one of them suddenly failed. turns out that it's an epidemic with these gm trucks. *tr

Driving at 50mph, traffic light was turning red,started applying brakes to slow down, and brake pedal went all the way to the floor. truck did not want to stop at all. no indicator light illuminated or warning light. got truck back home and fluid was pouring out from under truck. further investigation proved rusted, brake line had split in two. all brake lines on this truck are rusted or corroded. no sense for these lines to be like this. wonder which one will bust next. gm has a serious problem!!! *tr

On the evening of december 23, 2013, while travelling on a connecticut state road, i applied my brakes, as a vehicle was turning left ahead of me. the brake peddle went immediately to the floor. i realized a brake line had ruptured. i was about a mile from the automotive repair facility that i utilize. i was able to nurse the vehicle there, where it was subsequently repaired (brake line replaced). in the past, i would have taken the vehicle to the local dealership where it was purchased, but that dealership was one of many closed down by gm. the nearest dealership, in any direction is about 20 miles. fortunately i have found an outstanding local independent automotive repair facility. *tr

Brakes totally failed when trying to stop. took the vehicle to mechanic. told that the brake lines are totally rusted out. all eight lines will have to be totally replaced in order to function. they had never seen a vehicle with such problems. seems this is a common problem with this type of vehicle. *tr

Was driving and brake line "burst" causing brake failure and wreck into tree. *tr

Coming home with a small load of lumber for a woodworking project, the "change oil lite" came on. upon returning home and unloaded the lumber, backed the truck into the garage to change the oil-- the pickup didn't stop. he crawled under the pick up to find fluid on the garage floor and the brake lines rusted, corroded and one brake line split and leaking. fortunately we were not traveling when the brakes malfunctioned. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet c1500 2wd. the contact was coasting and attempted to brake but the pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard as the brakes failed. the contact placed the vehicle in neutral and applied the parking brake to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was inspected and it was determined all four brake lines wee severely rusted and corroded.. the manufacturer was made aware of the incident. the approximate failure mileage was 88,000...updated 12-23-13 *bf

Started truck to hook up to a trailer at home. backing up, and depressed brakes while backing, suddenly lost all brake control. i had no control to stop vehicle. vehicle rolled to a stop while i pressed and pumped brakes with no affect. *tr rolled to stop. i then placed vehicle in park and exited to find brake fluid on ground. i then tried to slowly move vehicle into garage so as to raise jack up- for a further examination, but i had zero control over braking. in order to get vehicle onto concrete surface/garage i had to shift back and forth between neutral and drive until i limp the truck into garage but do so without ramming through the back wall as i had no control over brakes. once in, i jacked up truck and i found one leak in one rusted metal brake line at a bend closest to left rear wheel. sudden and total and complete loss of brakes. *tr

I was traveling at 30 to 35 miles per hour and a school bus stopped to drop kids red lights flashing. i applied brake pressure only to have the brake pedal go all the way to the floor board. lucky timing i was first in line and ran into grass on the side of the road before any children had disembarked. investigation revealed that the brake lines had corroded and caused a fluid leak. *tr

Total brake failure- ruptured brake line under driver door side. fortunately this happened when i was backing out of my driveway and i was able to stop my truck using the emergency brake.the week before i had my abs sensors on the front wheels replaced because the truck would sometimes not stop at a slow speed. i am happy that this did not happen while i was towing my trailer. rupture of this line caused a total brake failure with no warning until after the incident( when all the fluid was gone}. *tr

Noticed brake fluid was low. could not find any leaks, while backing truck up, i applied my brakes and the brake pedal went clear to the floor. i used my emergency brake to stop my truck. i immediately looked underneath the truck and brake fluid was dripping from the rear axle. i investigated the brake lines and found them to be completely rusted and corroded. i was just lucky that this did not happen on the highway as it would have been a certain collision causing injuries or death. *tr

Left rear steel brake line blew out. upon inspection, brake line was found rusted with a 1/16 inch hole on the 3/16 inch tubing. *tr

Brakes failed as i was coming to a stop sign. no cross traffic at time so no collision occurred. had vehicle towed to repair facility. all brake lines had to be replaced. total bill $750. *tr

While driving in normal traffic, i was preparing to stop at a red light with vehicles ahead of me. upon applying brakes from approx 30 mph, i was able to brake like normal, until approx 5-10 mph, when the abs kicked on for no reason, sending my truck within inches from striking another motorist in front of me. it continued to do this for about 3 miles until i arrived home.

While backing out of my garage i applied the brakes to change direction and go forward. i heard a sudden hissing noise through the open driver side window and my brake pedal went to the floor, bottoming out. upon investigation i noticed brake fluid coming from rusted brake lines behind the left side front wheel. when the brake pedal bottomed, it didn't appear that i had any brake action at all. very fortunate to have been in my driveway and not at a busy intersection or other dangerous location. *tr

Want 1600 dollars to replace every line on the truck due to rust...including flexible hose to wheels. don't have vin no truck at shop until i decide what to do. *tr

I was driving home and pulled up to a traffic light and was preparing to stop, as i applied the brake pedal it went to the floor as i was pushing the pedal down and even tried pumping the brakes up a bit nothing worked and it would not stop and i almost hit a police car but luckily the light turned green and i applied the emergency brake that stopped me enough to give me time for the cars in the front of me to move on. this is the 2nd time this happened the first time was a similar situation and i got that part fixed and i was informed that other lines were fine but after last winter and the truck being parked outside for the first time it happened again. this truck does not have a lot of miles on it and even though i live in a state that uses salt in the winter this truck was never driven in the winter and parked in a garage and only driven in the summer months which is why the miles are so low and why i purchased it from a private owner. upon further inspection the brake lines are extremely rusted now and leaking and i cannot even afford the cost at this time to get this fixed due to having my hours at work lowered to 5 a day. *tr

This complaint relates to nhtsa action number ea11001 regarding corroded brake lines on chevy trucks. i was coming up to a red light, some cars ahead of me, going about 30 mph. i applied the brakes. initial pressure on the pedal felt normal, then the pedal resistance dropped to zero. by pushing the pedal all the way to the floor i was able to stop the vehicle. i pulled in to a gas station. brake fluid was pouring out of a location along the brake line running to the back of the vehicle. location about where the cab and bed meet. i was able to drive slowly to a nearby chevy dealer for repairs. total repair bill was $2200. *tr

2002 chevrolet silverado.abs issue. driving at less than 10mph, abs pump was engaged and i was barely able to stop the vehicle, i had to use parking brake and downshift in order to get my vehicle to stop. i was within one car length from striking another car on the road. abs is constantly running and kicks in at lower speeds. very unsafe. *tr

My wife complained to me the brakes on our 2002 chevy silverado pick-up, felt funny. i backed our pick-up truck out of the driveway and went to the end of the street, the brakes felt mushy. as i got to the end of our street is a stop sign. i was going approximately 15 to 20mph. i went to stop the truck and the brake pedal went right to the floor. i was unable to stop. i pumped the brakes and then held firmly on the pedal. i quickly observed cross traffic in the road before me and i turned sharply onto the shoulder of the highway west just being narrowly missed by west bound traffic. i had my wife follow me to the dealership and i coasted into the dealership without any brakes at all. the following day i was told by the dealership i needed all new brake lines and brake calibers. they asked me to come down and view the under portions of our pick-up and i did so. the truck was up on the hoist and mechanic and service rep showed me he was unable to take the broken line out of the brake caliber without snapping off the nut holding the brake line. they showed me the remaining brake lines all in stages of rusting out including the one line that blew open causing the sudden leak and "no brakes" problem. the repair service cost me approximately $2800,00. i complained to the service manager [xxx], i told him i have driven gm cars for decades on michigan roads and never had any brake line rust out and fail. i was told the brake line failure was due to the salty conditions driving in michigan winters. his explanation still did not make much sense to me. i know car manufactures are very aware of these type road conditions in the midwest and north east. the dealership that i took my truck to is the only repair facility i have taken it to for maintenance and repairs. that was a very expensive repair bill. we were lucky not having an accident on that day. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), ...

Went to put on brakes and nothing found that they have rusted through and not from rubbing or clamps. was able to keep from hitting another car. *tr

Went to stop at stop sign, brakes went to floor, no cars were coming, went thru sign by time e-brake was hit. *tr

While towing my boat i was approaching a stop sign while pressing my brake pedal it went completely to the floor. i was barely able to get out of the way of the other stopped cars at the stop sign i had just enough pressure to stop in the oncoming traffic lane just past the cars in my lane which i was lucky enough to avoid hitting. thankfully also there was no cars coming in the other direction. i then pulled over and got out of my truck and noticed brake fluid leaking from under my truck under the drivers side door entrance. i then looked under and noticed the rusted lines the fluid was coming from as it was dripping out. this could of been a disaster because if i had made it to the interstate and got on the highway to head home i surely would of not been as lucky. so far my towing cost me 298.00 to get my truck home and to my mechanic where it sits in their lot until monday morning. luckily my fishing partner was not far behind me and saw me pulled over and then pulled over to see what was wrong. he has a truck and towed my boat all the way home for me which was 60 miles. this was by far the scariest event i ever have had in my truck while towing but do realize that it could of been much worst. after reading all the countless issues that most have had with this i cannot imagine why gm has not stepped up to fix the problem through a recall. *tr

2002 chevy silverado 4x4 ext cab truck was recalled in 2005 for anti lock brake activation at low speeds the dealer cleaned put on anti corrosive material on sensor (after truck was in a accident i got the notice in the mail 3 days later) now 7/11/2013 its happening again, they will not fix it again only once, cost for new hub and sensor i about $700 per side $1,400 total to fix problem, this is a safety issue gm, chevy should fix not put a band aid on the fix. also the chevy dealer said to me its a lifetime warranty on parts and labor wow that's great at my expense. why didn't they put the lifetime warranty when its new, now i have to pay twice some deal. *tr

Lost most of my braking as a result of heavy rust on brake lines and other brake parts. mechanic said this was way more rust than there should of been in these areas. *tr

Went to stop for a red light and the drive side rear brake line blew,i went through the intersection with no brakes. that was a thrill. *tr

My girlfriend was driving my truck went to pull in to a parking spot when she hit the brakes abs kicked in and would not stop the truck causing her to hit a parked car with a good amount of damage to the other car the brakes have never giving me problems and now its got no brakes 2002 chevy silverado. *tr

I had traveled approximately 1/2 mile from my house when i applied the brakes to slow down. the pedal had barely any pressure as i applied the brake, fortunately i had a little bit of pressure and i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop, by a combination of downshifting and using what little brakes that i had left. the brake warning light on the panel came on at that time. the vehicle was taken to a local shop to have the problem checked out. i was told that my brake lines were completely rusted out and that they all had to be replaced. i was approximately 1/8 of a mile from my entrance to the highway, and i was fortunate that this happened before i got on the highway. i would have been in congested morning traffic traveling at a speed of 60mph. i had no prior warning. i was told by the repair shop that the lines were rusted so bad that it was senseless to try to fix just one section, and that if they did that i would be returning shortly to repair additional parts of the lines. they told me that this was a very labor intensive repair and that it could cost approximately $1000 dollars. i was also told that this was a common problem with many chevrolets manufactured in the 2000 years. this is a very dangerous situation and their should have been a recall on this issue. *tr

The emergency brakes have never worked, the pedal goes to the floor and will not hold the truck. i have a 4 wheel drive with an automatic transmission. when on an incline in park the truck will sometimes start to roll down hill. *tr

Leaking fluid found to be brake fluid coming from rust ruptured brake lines, all lines rusted and deemed by dealership to require replacement of lines and front brake calipers. *tr

Upon requiring an emergency stop from 50 mph approaching a stop light at a busy intersection, one of the brake lines burst. the brake pedal went to the floor. (no brake warning light, no low brake fluid light, and no loss of abs light). i pumped the brakes and dropped the transmission into 1st gear in hopes of slowing down before a crash. i made the right turn at the intersection, which was up hill and eventually brought the vehicle to a complete stop. i put the truck in park and applied the emergency brake. fortunately, the light just changed so the intersection was still clear. the vehicle was towed after confirmation of the damaged brake line. further inspection has revealed that all the steel brake lines are heavily corroded and are in need of replacement. this issue seems pretty frequent with this particular year and model. a weak or poorly designed brake line should be the responsibility of the manufacturer. proof of fault is indicated in gm's decision to change the brake lines to stainless steel in newer models. if no recall is issued at least a warning should be given to current owners!!! *tr

My brake lines rusted through and burst when i used my brakes. could not keep my truck from moving when stopped at an intersection. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the brakes were applied and the anti lock brake system engaged independently. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred on an intermittent basis. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was repaired previously under nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 91,000 and the current mileage was 93,000. *tr

Brake lines blew out from corrosion. this has happened 3 times since april 2013. i was unable to stop on two separate red light occasions. also having abs problems. the abs system breaks loose just about when the vehicle comes to a complete stop forcing me to let go and reapply brake quickly. my truck is undercoated also making this deadly problem more concerning. nhtsa should do its job and stop these death traps. *tr

Brake line busted while bleeding air out of system. found all lines going to abs block in center of truck were rusted completely through. this was not the first time this happened. had same problem about year before on front brake line. i almost hit another vehicle in rear. i had to have truck towed to local repair shop were they fixed broke line. *tr

While exiting freeway, on "off ramp" removed foot from gas pedal to start braking and pedal went to floor. literally stopped two (2) feet from rear of already stopped car. upon underneath inspection found leaking brake fluid at rear, severely corroded brake line. *tr

I was traveling southbound on ct. rte. 8 at approx 6am at 55 miles per hour. state maintenance vehicles had partially obstructed the road as i rounded the bend approaching the trumbull town line this in turn caused an abrupt halt of traffic. i applied my brakes rather hard which did slow the vehicle but i still had to swerve into the breakdown lane in order to avoid a collision when the brake pedal went to the floor. upon investigation i had found that the steel hard line running along the frame rail for the rear brakes was badly corroded and had bust. the rest of the steel lines which all run to and from the abs pump are also in bad shape. it is my opinion these lines be made from stainless steel in the interest of safety. after all they make most modern exhaust in stainless and that is not as important as stopping your vehicle!!! *tr

Service brakes failed due to corroded brake line above rear axle. park brake failed to slow the vehicle due to the rear brake dustshield being corroded to the point is was completely gone. the lack of a dust shield allowed the park brake shoe and linkage corrode and become inoperative. *tr

During an unexpected stop situation, my brakes stopped working normally. the abs system was going on and off. my pick up would not stop. fortunately, there was no oncoming traffic and i was able to drive in the oncoming lane avoiding the vehicle in front of me and there was no accident. i took the vehicle to my repair shop and the technician showed me that the brakelines were rusting out and in two spots the lines had ruptured, probably during the event described above. brake fluid was leaking from the lines in two spots. *tr

Took truck in for state inspection, truck failed inspection due to rusted brake lines, power steering pump leaking , dealer said it would be $1228.43 to $1420.99 to just fixed the brake lines all lines needed replaced and calipers screws. power steering pump cost 535.00 to replace. poor quality ,high cost to fix and lack of safety on gm part for not covering rubber coating or using stainless steel lines to protect our family very discouraged with service tech said these are the prices. what happened to our safety. brake lines and gas lines should not be made of steel that can corrode and rust out and break. power steering pump with these few miles should not have gone out. my 1988 chevy truck never had these problems. there needs to be a recall. *tr

Truck failed annual maine safety inspection because of major corrosion on all brake lines run along frame underneath. (the lines are not yet leaking, but failure is imminent and vehicle is not safe to drive.) cost of repairs is estimated to be approximately $1400.00 by sullivan tire of scarborough maine. *tr
