Problems with 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 133 959 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I had the oil changed on my 2000 chevy silverado 1500 2 wheel-drive pick-up truck by a local shop and when i started the truck after the oil change and put the truck into drive in the shop parking lot, i noticed that i had to depress the brake pedal down to the floor. prior to this, i never had to press the brake pedal to the floor. the brakes previously were strong and required a slight push. i drove a short distance and found that stopping required the brake pedal to be pressed all the way down to the floor and immediately returned to the same shop and asked the shop to take a look. the shop found that one of the brake lines was leaking fluid (under driver side) and explained that all of the brake lines looked rusted. this truck primarily was used by a highway dept outside of buffalo, ny (road salt/rust belt geographic area) - the exposure to amounts of road salt/ice-melting chemicals may have been a contributing factor. the truck has been towed to another mechanic and i am waiting to hear back about the repair options. if the nhtsa would like any evidence (such as photographs or the actual rusted brake lines), please let me know. *tr

During the annual safety inspection the dealer advised me that all of the brake lines would need to be replaced before the next inspection due to rust ($1200), and the rear brake backing plates would also need to be replaced due to rust. the rear brake backing plates were already replaced once due to rust-through. this vehicle has been routinely maintained and commercially washed throughout its life, driven on a daily basis up (until the last 5 months) only in eastern pa, de, md area (no snow belt travel). in my 40 years of vehicle ownership, i have never experienced or even heard of brake backing plates rusting through during the life of a 12 year old vehicle (let alone twice) and, have never experienced (or heard of) all brake lines on a vehicle rusting through to the point where they all need to be replaced. this is not normal wear or deterioration. it is most definitely a vehicle safety issue to have critical safety (brake) components rusting through at a highly accelerated rate for no apparent reason to the driver/owner. *tr

Was towing a trailer. (light load) going approx 35mph stop light turned yellow, with plenty of time for me to stop. i applied the brakes and they let loss. i then had no choice but to run the yellow/red light. luckily it did not turn our worse. but i then had to make my way to a parking lot with no brakes. my truck is manual so that helped make thing a little easier. i then looked and found out the one of my brake lines had busted from corrosion. i have not yet replaced the lines. plan to do so soon. *tr

Backing up truck, moved it forward and the brakes went, couldn't stop the truck. i was moving forward after having it on reverse, so the speed was slow (5mph). noticed there was a puddle on the ground of brake fluid, and to further investigate, there was a lot of rust and corrosion that came from underneath. i was on vacation when this happened, called aaa for a tow on the date listed. replaced brake lines, master cylinder, and noticed while replacing the brake lines, there's more corrosion coming from underneath. *tr

I was headed to the store when my truck just shut off in the middle of the street i took to my mechanic and he said that the fuel pump and sending unit needed to be replaced as well as the fuel lines due to there being excessive corrosion. also abs system activates when coming to a stop at low speeds. and i have also had to replace the brake lines due to excessive rust. at 118000 miles i had to have my heater core replaced due no heat and once again at 121,000 miles i have lost heat again. *tr

While pulling into my driveway, the brake pedal stated chattering like the anti-lock brakes were activating. the abs light came on intermittently and when the truck was being parked in front of the garage it would not stop and went through the garage door. *tr

I own a year 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup truck. on april 15, 2013, while driving home from the nearest village, i lost all power in my brakes. the truck was going downhill and as i applied the brakes the vehicle continued to increase in speed. i was quickly overtaking a slower passenger car ahead of me, so i had to veer off the road onto the shoulder and into a rough ravine. eventually i slowed to a stop. i got out and examined the brake fluid and found it to be less than the minimum level. i also saw fluid leaking out from underneath the rear axial. since the incident happen in the evening, i called a friend who helped me bring the truck to my home. the following day i had the vehicle towed to a chevrolet dealership where they diagnosed the failed (rusted through) rear brake line. the other rear bake lines were extremely rusted and at the suggestion of the service technician, i had them all replaced. the cost of the repair was $1625. the truck had approximately 99,000 miles at the time of repair and was garaged during winter months since it is primarily a farm vehicle. i believe that the brake line wear and rust is a safety hazard since the truck lost all brake power and was increasing in speed even though i had the brake pedal fully engaged. only by steering off the road and driving up an elevated road embankment was i able to stop the truck safely. *tr

After driving for around 30 miles i was pulling up to the garage at home slowing down when the anti-lock brake system engaged at about 3 miles per hour. in a panic, the truck kept moving without stopping for approximately 3 to 4 feet, then i put the truck in park and it stopped. without doing that i would have hit my garage door, missing the door by inches. this issue is still ongoing as of 8/18/13. in order to stop, the brakes have to be pumped at all times when trying to stop. the anti-lock bake system activates at 3 to 4 miles per hour all the time if not pumped. i am a mechanic and started searching the internet to see what could be the problem. upon my finding there are many others with the same issue as mine. i have not addressed the issue because the truck isn't used much, although it needs to be address very soon. i feel that this issue should not be at my expense when this issue is more wide spread then just my truck. some have said that a earlier model of suv had a recall when the anti-lock system would activate at 3 to 10 miles per hour and was a design flaw. on a larger note, the anti-lock brake light doesn't come on either. *tr

Some friends borrowed my 2000 chevy silverado to haul some sheet rock headed down to hardware store and ended up calling me with a smoking engine told them to bring it back to the house. my buddy said the brakes didn't stop all that good on the way over and went right to the floor looking under the hood i had him push the brakes and fluid shot out of the break lines running along the body frame they look all corroded in one location and one of them burst. we are fortunate the only ran to the hardware store and not on the highway it could of ended very badly. *tr

Multiple brake lines ruptured, causing brake failure. crashed into metal gate. *tr

The transmission in this vehicle is a total piece of junk. there are many, many vehicles with this same transmission. it locked up slinging the driver into the steering wheel and windshield. this broke the bolts holding the seat to the frame. the cost to fix was over 1200 dollars. i've talked with several transmission shops, each one is in business due to the fact that this transmission is defective. they repair or replace more of these than all other times 400. it appears that this problem has been a problem since first being used. it also appears that no one is being held accountable for the repairs and/or deaths, injury that is being caused by this defective unit. it's oindtalled in millions of vehicles worldwide. when is something going to be done ? when is someone going to be held accountable ? stop this madness, please ! the time it's took me to fill out the form, dozens of people were injured due to the above statement. *tr

While driving down the road at the posted speed limit of 45mph, heading south, found road i needed to turn on, to head east, hit the brakes and brake pedal went almost to the floor and caused me to miss turn due to lack of braking. towed vehicle home and found brake line rusted out and blown by abs module. remaining brake lines in very rusty/ deteriorated shape, all needing replacement. *tr

I was driving and pushed the brakes to slow down and the pedal went close to the floor and just barely slowed down enough to turn off the road. luckily no other vehicle in my way because i couldn't stop quick enough. turned out one of the brake lines rusted through and the rest are that rusted that they'll have to be replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that he attempted to stop the vehicle but once the vehicle reached 3 mph, the brake pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was advised that the wheel speed sensor needed to be removed and cleaned. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the failure mileage was 75,000.

Applied brakes to stop initally started to stop and then peddle went to floor and could not stop until another 50 feet or so. *tr

The brake line running from the abs module to the front passenger wheel corroded to the point of leaking brake fluid. the brake warning light came on. the truck was then parked until it could be serviced. all brake lines were found to be severely rusted & corroded. a second line (from the abs module to the rear axle) disintegrated upon removal. the worst corrosion was at the points where the brake lines were clipped into the plastic brackets. *tr

Took veh. in for headlight alignment. got into veh. to leave and the brake pedal went to the floorboard. mechanic said the brake line had rusted through. he check and said all lines were completely rusted and needed to be replaced. the veh. had to be towed to a chev. dealer to bleed the line. total cost including one caliper that was too rusted was $794.11. i had been traveling on the expressway moments prior to going to the service station. had i not stopped there when i did, i have no doubt serious injuries would have occurred as the brake line rusted through. *tr

Rusty brake lines leaking badly. to much money to have dealer repair. truck just sitting. *tr

Lost brakes while pulling into parking spot at local grocery store. had to stomp e-brake to keep from hitting car in front of me. looked underneath to see brake fluid running down frame rail. brake line ruptured due to rusting out. got lucky this happened a mile from my brothers garage... he loaded me up on his car trailer and took to garage. up on the lift we went. rust rust rust. need to replace brake lines front to back...fuel lines look like crap too. had this happened the next morning i would probably have to type this out from the hospital as the wife and i were due to leave the next morning on our anniversary trip. come on gm recall!!! *tr

Backing up to launch boat on ramp and brake pedal went to the floor. drove truck 2 blocks to house used emergency brake to stop. saw brake fluid on the road. brake lines are severely corroded and one has failed. master cylinder has lost all fluid. *js

On 9/18/12 i was traveling in rush hour traffic on rt 29n in columbia md when traffic slowed and then stopped. i stepped on the brakes of my 2000 chevy silverado 1500. the vehicle slowed somewhat but then the brake pedal went to the floor and i couldn't stop. i rear ended an unmarked police vehicle at approx 20-25mph. my truck suffered frt bumper damage as well as the back window blowing out. the police car suffered rear bumper damage. the officer stated that he was ok from the crash. i also suffered not injuries. i was able to get the truck out of the traffic lanes and opened the hood to check the brake fluid. the master cylinder was empty. i had the truck towed to my local chevy dealer for inspection. my insurance company came out to inspect the damages. the auto adjuster stated that the brake lines had rusted through causing all the brake fluid to leave the system. my insurance company says the brake lines are a wear item and are not covered but the damage to the truck from the accident will be covered. gm says that they will not cover the brake lines and that there is no recall on the lines. i am having the brake lines replaced with stainless steel brake lines to stop this from ever happening again at considerable cost to me. after reading up on the subject it appears gm knows about this problem but won't do anything about it. i could have killed/injured someone due to these faulty brake lines. *tr

While driving on main st. in newark, delaware my braking system completely failed. it was a good thing i was not on interstate and had to stop quickly or someone could have been killed. i had to have truck taken to nearest garage for complete brake line replacement at cost of 885.00 dollars. i looked up this model for complaints and have found many trucks with brake system failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph, he depressed the brake pedal and it dropped to the floorboard. as a result, the brakes failed to respond. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the brake lines were corroded. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 79,800.

This is the second time my brake lines have busted open !!!!!! they are all rusted out . my only recourse is to replace them all . the first time, i took it to a dealer thinking they would fix it right .big mistake they pieced it together with compression fittings for $400.00. at least i wasn't moving fast thank god. this must become a recall , is anybody listening !!! *tr

I was traveling on i-83 north in the right lane from baltimore md to hershey park pa. a driver attempting to merge into my lane from the market st on ramp in york pa., at very low speed caused me to jam on the brakes. the brake pedal went to the floor. pumping the brake pedal and pushing it all the way to the floor yielded no results. i had no braking whatsoever. luckily the car trying to merge stayed on the shoulder or i would not have been able to avoid a collision. i coasted down a long hill - downshifting with hazard lights on, until i came upon an available shoulder to pull onto. checked the brake fluid reservoir and it was half full. found brake fluid leaking on the drivers side frame rail a couple feet behind the drivers side door. with plenty of level shoulder to test - i went up and back about 5 mph to see if i had any brakes at all and determined there were none.. i was towed to a repair shop and ended up paying $973 to have the 2 brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs unit, and the 2 lines from the abs unit to the front wheel replaced. i still need to have the rear lines replaced although the mechanic said they looked ok. vehicle was purchased at jba chevrolet glen burnie( used ) has been titled in md until january of this year va. *tr

A car pulled out from a side street and when braking pressure was applied the pedal went to the floor. after driving around the car and further brake pressure the truck slowed. i also had my fuel lines replaced last year. and yes. there is a lot of frame rust in the frame and other areas. when is chevy going to pony up. this happened to my friends takoma and they gave him $12000 for a 13 year old truck. very disappointed with chevy. *tr

Hi i was hauling debris from my yard and taking to land fill.about 800 to 900lbs total. stopped at convenience store for gas and food. pulling out of parking lot, brakes gave out, brake pedal went to the floor. no warning lights. no warning at all...barely any brakes at all. i was just about to get on expressway?? wow! there would have been no stopping this thing in an emergency?? i see gm already knows of this failure. i think a heads up would have been in order??? i've called all the people i know with similar vehicles. only one person was aware of the issue and he has spent over a 1000.00 in repairs. replaced rusted brake lines. he told me he just replaced the transmission lines also. has anyone been injured or killed?? i called the dealership, jerry's chevrolet for information. i purchased it new. waiting for service department to return my call. *tr

Brake line leading to the rear brakes failed due to excessive rust. failure occured without notice. no accident resulted from failure. inspecting the remaining lines revealed all were rusted to the point of needing replaced. *tr

When applying the brakes to make a turn, the brake pedal sank to the floor. unable to slow down, i pumped the brakes with no result. i down shifted to third, then second, to first and made a turn into an uphill driveway. upon stopping, brake fluid leaked under the cab. the truck was towed to a repair shop. thank god no one was in front of me, and i did not crash! *tr

I stepped on brakes and they went to floor. had to go to garage and replace entire brake line system. this is a major problem because i have asked a few people who own chevy pickups and they all have had same problem. *tr

Both front and rear brakes went at the same time resulting in total loss of brakes due to rusted out brake lines. severe corrosion on frame cross member. *tr

The first brake line failure was in july of 2012 and was from the abs to the rear brake hose, this one line cost $337.05 to replace. it failed on the highway and i almost ran into the car in front of me. the 2nd line failed yesterday 10/5/16 while driving on a secondary road and again was located on the abs unit. it has not been repaired yet. i bought a stainless steel brake kit from dorman and plan to replace all the brake lines on the truck so as we don't get killed or harm anyone we run into on the next failure as the remaining lines are very, very rusty. future failure of the rest of the lines is both imminent and expected. nhtsa please act so as to prevent anyone from getting hurt or even killed.

I was going down a street in our city someone stopped in front of me and when i applied the brakes the pedal went to the floor. i turned to avoid a crash and ran into a fence. i checked when i got the truck home i noticed a puddle under the truck when i checked it was brake fluid. i replaced the rusted line and two weeks later it happened again to different brake line, the truck is now sitting in my drive and i cant move it. *tr

While traveling north on rte 3 in nh i was in traffic and a construction area had slowed travel all the cars in front of me slowed down and as i tried to slow down the brake pedal went to the floor and i hit the vehicle in front of me and my truck was spewing brake fluid from under the drivers door. upon examination i can see all brake lines are severely corroded. the man i hit had a back injury thank god i had my seatbelt on! *tr

The brake lines of the chevy silverado 1500 have all rusted out. the undercarriage and brake lines have corroded causing brake failure. some of the lines were replaced within a few years. brake calipers affected as well. *jb *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving 40 mph and applied the brakes when they failed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that one of the brake lines was fractured and the others were corroded from rust. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 150,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while attempting to shift the vehicle out of park, he applied pressure to the brake pedal and the pedal depressed to the floor. the contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the brake lines were corroded. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop, who verified the failure and stated that all of the brake lines and fuel lines needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileages were 90,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that whenever he depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle at low speeds, the vehicle would not respond. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who cleaned the wheel speed sensor but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was notified who stated there was an open recall on the vehicle under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock). the vehicle was repaired under the recall but the failure recurred. the manufacturer informed the contact they would not repair the vehicle a second time. the vehicle was not further repaired. the failure mileage was 106,000.

My wife was driving to work when she went to apply the brakes on our 2000 chevy pickup when the brake line on the truck ruptured and she could not stop the vehicle. she then rearended the jeep in front of her causing damage to both vehicles. we then had the truck towed to are residents were i looked under the truck to find the leak and how badly the truck had rusted lines and the under carriage of the truck. i feel this a live and death problem to any 1 driving these vehicles and if my wife had not taken evasive action there may have been a death involved. chevy should be held accountable for this problem since i have seen many people on line have had the same troubles with these rusted lines rupturing. *tr

While driving at 45 mph, my brake light came on. i immediately started to pull over and noticed that i felt less pressure on brake pedal. i was able stop the vehicle, but notice no puddles. resumed drive home. check fluid reservoir, fluid almost gone. filled reservoir and pumped brakes back up. noticed some drips in driveway. also noticed slight gas smell. took vehicle to mechanic and he determined that not only was the brake line rotted, the gas lines were rotting out as well. the areas that were rotted the most is right where the support brackets are. these were underneath driver side door, headed up into engine compartment. lines were replaced with stainless steel lines to prevent from happening further. *tr

When i turn left into a parking spot the abs system goes on (even on dry surfaces where there is no slipping) and the vehicle doesn't stop as quickly as it should. this has happened many times. *tr

Sitting at drive thru window waiting on food with my foot on the brake, went to the floor all of a sudden and found that the brake line burst. fluid everywhere. this is a manufacturer defect. i bought this truck new. *tr

There were 2 incidents of the same problem on different portion of brake lines on my chevrolet silverado 1500 2000 extended cab. in both incidents the problem appeared while backing out from my drive way. both times there were completely no brakes due to rusted out brake lines. i was very lucky that the problem did not show while i was on the road. there were no accidents involved. the first time it happened on dec. 29 (or 28), 2011. i was taking my son for his dentist appointment and there were no brakes. i did not realize the problem at the beginning until i was out of my drive way and on the neighborhood road and trying to stop at the first stop sign. it was really really scary but i managed to stop my vehicle. it cost $364 to fix the problem. it was partial replacement of the brake line. the second time it happened on march 18, 2014, while i was going to another appointment. i did not go any further than out of my drive way. this time it cost $1235 to replace the entire brake line. *tr

To date i have had three (3) of the 4 brake lines on my truck repaired because of line failure due to rust. my truck originally came from the ft. wayne, in area where they use salt throughout the winter months. i bought the truck from my wife's sister. i know the truck was garaged and well maintained. my mechanic said that exposure to salt for several years caused the lines to corrode. this is a definite safety problem and should be subject to recall. if you need further details about my repairs you can contact:... claytons car care 3701 n. duke street durham, nc 27704 they have done all 3 repairs to my brakes. *js

While driving on the nj turnpike my brakes failed. i had my 12 year old son with me, so you can imagine my fear. i was traveling about 35 miles per hour. luckily i was approaching the rest area and was able to use the service road to slow myself down. i had to have the truck towed to my mechanic. he replaced the brake line( at my expense)and when he showed me the broken line i could not believe how rusted it was. this was in 2011. the following year (2012) the same thing happened. while traveling in town the brakes failed. i brought it to my mechanic and he pointed out how rusted all the brake lines were and how dangerous the vehicle was. i had to replace all the brake lines. this was an expense that was not anticipated when purchasing an american made chevy truck. very disappointing. upon investigating this situation i have come to realize that it is a defect with the chevy vehicles. chevy should make this right. i was lucky enough not to have had a crash, the thought of what could have happened is very disturbing. *tr

The brake lines on my truck rusted out, causing a loss of vehicle braking power. of all the vehicles that i've owned over the years, i have never had a brake line rust out! on 11/13/2010, the driver side front line rusted through when my children and i were in the truck. in a restaurant parking lot, i noticed that the brake pedal went low, but the vehicle seemed to still have braking power. i drove about 3/4 of a mile to a gas station and had almost no braking power when i got there. i looked under the truck and brake fluid was spraying out! my truck was towed home and the next day i spliced in a replacement brake line, but noticed that they all seemed to be very rusty. in august of 2012 another brake line rusted through, this time while the truck was in my driveway. i had started the truck to leave, and pushed on the brake to shift out of park and the pedal went to the floor. i exited the vehicle and saw brake fluid spraying underneath the truck. at this point, i decided to replace all of the faulty factory brake lines with after-market stainless steel brake lines. i'm still in the process of doing this job, as it is very maintenance intensive job, and i don't have a lot of time to work on the vehicle, but luckily i have other vehicles to drive. i do not think that the brake lines should have failed so quickly, considering i've never experienced a brake line failure on any other vehicle. it appears that chevrolet selected an improper type of steel to use for the brake lines. *tr

Had to stop at a red light on a hill. brake pedal went to floor no brakes.had to use emergency brake to stop. had brake line to rear replaced.3 years later (today) brake line to front failed rusted. there are several brake lines on this truck they are all severely rusted an need repair. i am in the autobody repair business and have seen this problem on almost all silverados 6 years and older . starting 1999 and up. *tr

The brake lines on my truck have failed on three separate occasions. the first time was in my driveway when i had just started to back up. the second time was also in my driveway right before i was about to pull into traffic. the most recent failure was as i was approaching a red light in a 35 mph zone. on that last occasion, i immediately shifted to the lowest gear and turned right into the parking lot i happened to be near. i was able to bring the truck to a rest in a snow bank and await a tow truck. the mechanics that replaced the lines each time stated that i shouldn't have a failure again because this was the third and final line that was corroded. *tr

I had an issue with the abs light intermittently coming on at inopportune times and when it does the abs system does not work properly. very bad timing when on my way to work the streets were wet and the car in front of me decided to stomp on their brakes and take "that"exit off the freeway.brakes locked up and it wasn't for leaving enough room between cars and my quick reaction time it could of became quite ugly. *tr

This happened a number of times, the first time they replaced brake lines. i complained to mechanic a number of times about brakes shuddering and going down very low before catching, they drove it and of course it did not do it. more recently they are shuddering and feeling like the anti-lock brake is going on when just slowing on dry pavement. on thursday feb 20, the brakes went almost to the floor before they finally stopped. i have called gm and they said while many of the trucks in this category were recalled for brake issues, this vin number was not. how is that?? i have yet another appt to go back to the mechanic and see about replacing sensors, which they said are ongoing issues on these trucks driven in the northeast. i did read the recall and it described exactly what this truck is doing, but the gm rep i spoke with said this truck was not included. the recall i read said all these trucks in the snow belt which included vermont were recalled. i am frustrated and confused how they can know they have a problem and skip around which models they will service. *tr
