Silverado 1500 4wd steering gear box defect in that it starts to grind and threatens freeze up and power steering loss usually when attempting left turn. dealer has already replaced 2 units. the original was replaced at 81,000 miles. the second at 96,000 and now it's bad again at 120,000 miles. dealer states that it is a design defect that was corrected for the 2008 models. picture making a right hand turn with full power steering but if you turn left it will grind and wine at first, graduating to trying to make the left turn as if the engine had died out. that's how bad it gets. it will, and i'm sure, it already has caused accident problems. question is, why did the original steering box last more than 80,000 miles but the replacements barely make 15,000 miles?? mind you these are oem replacements done by the dealer. furthermore, the replacements ar only warrantied for 1 year or 12,000 miles. how convenient huh? this issue is a serious safety problem and needs total recall as soon as possible! please note that this is the 3rd steering box to go bad so far as of this date 4/24/09. *tr

Gm vehicles, corrosion may cause anti-lock brake system (abs) activation. *bf the consumer stated he received a recall notice in the mail. the recall stated if the repairs had already been made, send in the receipt. the consumer was told he did not qualify for reimbursement because it was a canadian recall. the right inner tie rod was loose. *jb

Consumer experienced intense shaking from the vehicle when going over bumps. he took the vehicle to the dealer, and they could not find any defects. consumer was not satisfied to have the vehicle at home and examined it himself, finding a loose bolt connecting the tie rod. *ak took vehicle to chev dealer for repair twice. they replaced idler arm and inner passenger side tie rod, re-balanced tires, rotated same and aligned front end to no avail. the consumer found that the teflon nut holding the passenger side outer tie rod loosened. only a few threads were holding the nut onto the tie rod. *bf *nm

In early january i noticed on tv there was a recall on the 2000 chevrolet silverado. for the driveshaft on the power steering unit. i own a 2000 chevy silverado, how long does the manufacturer have to notify the owners on the recall? or are they required to do so. i believe there was another recall some time back on same model for the cable straps( tailgate support) but never heard a thing from the dealer. i made a phone call on feb 4 to the local dealer regarding the power steering and he had not heard of any such recall. this i kind of a sore subject for me because with only 45,000 miles on my pickup i had to have the seals replaced on the power steering unit due to leakage, in my judgment they wore out prematurely. that cost me $236.00, is there a connection between the driveshaft on the unit and the seals wearing prematurely? i believe i should be reimbursed for the $236.00 if in fact there is a recall.*jb
