Problems with 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 139 677 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The brake line went out and just about caused us to wreck. it was fine one minute then the brakes went all the way to the floor. pioneer chevy in abingdon va said the lines had rusted. that cost us over $1300. that was in april and now it's august and it's happened again with a different break line. pioneer now said it's going to cost over $800 this time. i'm so furious we really don't have this kind of money to spend on fixing the truck which we really need. from what i've read and researched apparently this is a common problem. please fix this issue. *tr

On april 9, 2014 at about 9:00 am, i was traveling outside of my neighborhood in light traffic when i came to stop behind a car. my brakes failed on my 1999 chevy silverado 1500 without any warning. luckily i know the area and i look for an uphill street and able to stop without any incident. upon investigation i found the brake lines blew and dumped fluid on the ground. all brake lines corrode and need to be replaced. a local mechanical shop replaced all of them for several thousands dollars. *tr

I had a brake line failure under a hard braking condition (firm, but not panic stop). the hard line from the abs pump to the rear axle failed just above the flex hose coupling. i had believe it to be the flex hose at first. upon inspection, the hardline and fitting to the flex line at the rear axle has become so corroded as to nearly be indistinguishable. braking control was minimal. the pedal went to the floor even with the front circuit still intact. even then, it could not completely stop the vehicle and i was forced to use the parking/emergency brake. had i been towing at the time, i am convinced it would have been catastrophic. *tr

I was trying to come to a stop at a red light when pressing on my brake pedal it went completely to floor. luckily there was no one in front of me & was able to turn the truck into the nearby store parking lot. when i got the truck home & took a look to see what the problem was, i seen that there was a brake line, on the drivers side, under the hood, that had a hole in it & was spraying fluid everywhere. the line also looked to be rusted. to make note the truck was able to come to a stop when driving very slowly, however, i was traveling at about 35 mph when trying to stop & traveled (just guessing) about 30 to 40 yards to the red light & was still unable to stop. *tr

Massive brake line failure due to rust and corrosion of brake lines. *tr

While applying brakes the pedal went to the floor, i took the truck to the mechanic and he said all the brake lines where rusted out and would need to be replaced. *tr

Hit the brakes relatively hard after being cut off by another driver. pedal went to the floor and had to have aaa give me a tow home. found a leaking brake line and repaired it. while test driving i hit the brakes firmly and it appeared as though it was resolved. as i pulled in my driveway i gave it one last good brake, and lo and behold the pedal went to the floor only to find another leak in another line. the brake lines are completely rusted and rotted underneath the vehicle. *tr

While driving on a freeway in heavy traffic three vehicles in front of me came to a sudden stop, two of them moved to the left. i had plenty of time to stop and when i pressed the brake pedal my brakes started working normally. as i got closer, about two car lengths, i lost braking power and sped up as if i had hit an icy patch in the road. i went to the right and hit the vehicle in front of me in the right rear quarter. at this point i coasted to a stop on the shoulder. when i was able to check out my truck i found a lot of brake fluid in the right front wheel well area that appeared to have come from the metal brake line which was rusty. the truck was so heavily damaged i could not get a picture or see the hole in the line. the air bags did not go off. the truck was totaled. *tr

Sudden loss of brake pressure. upon inspections brakes lines rusted and failed. these should be made from non-corrosive material! thank gosh we were not going highway speeds when we lost brakes. *tr

The brake lines rusted thru and leaked out all the break fluid causing the brakes to fail. brake lines should not rust thru so easily and so soon. i previously had a 1991 silverado with close to 300,000 miles and the brake lines on it never rusted thru. this is obviously a defect that is very dangerous. this is a vital safety component. for some reason this is a common problem in chevrolet silverados from 1999 to 2003. i had to pay $610.50 to get what i consider a gm defect fixed. *tr

I was operating my vehicle a approx. 30 mph and when i applied my brakes, the brake pedal went to the floor. i had no warning . upon inspection found that a brake lines had rusted and was leaking from the rear and front brake systems. i am aware that the system has a dual system for safety but never gave a warning. with both front and rear leaking, warning light never came on. all of the lines are very rusted. i have vintage cars with brake lines that never been repaired, and a newer vehicle with many brake problems. *tr

This is the 3rd time i lost brakes,in 2005,w 54000 miles, i lost all brakes and had to replace all rusted calipers rotors and rear rusted hand brake cables and drums.in8/10/10 w/74000 miles and had rusted brake line repaired. now on 10/ 10/13 lost all brakes, due to another rusted brake. i had all rusted brake lines tested and replaced, by a auto repair shop. these repairs cost me 2300.00 dollars. ps/this vehicle has only 88000 miles,6000 miles a year and always, always has a undercarriage wash in salt road conditions.the only major problem with this truck is the bad brake rust problems.no other vehical i owned has had rust as this truck. i still own a 1972 vw that has all original brake lines w/ no rust. *tr

Apparent brake line failure. appears to have corroded and is leaking fluid. *tr

While driving down the highway my chevy silverado 1500 brake line ruptured leaving me to think quick to avoid a crash. after pulling over i inspected the brake line to find the rear driver side hard line rusted completely thru right before it converts to a soft line. since i bought this truck 10 years ago i've had nothing but problems with the brakes. *tr

Badly rusted brake lines burst causing no brake situation. no brake light lit before or for a day after the incident. looking at the condition of the rest of the brake lines it appears that the material of the lines is defective as the remaining brake lines are very rusty also. *tr

I was braking at red light brake pedal when to floor did stop after i all ready went trough red light. *tr

I went to apply brakes at stop sign, pedal went to floor and by luck no one was coming from other direction. i wasn't able to stop. i spent over 700 dollars to have new brakelines installed. *tr

We were driving down the road after applying the e-brake and something sounded like it was dragging. we took the truck to the local shop and were told that the brake lines that go into the abs were rusted out and corroded. we had just replaced the driver's side brake line in feburary of this year. i see that this is a known problem for this year truck. why isn't chevy taking care of it???

I was traveling at 48 mph while approaching a stop light when i applied the brakes, the pedal went all the way to the floor. i did a quick head check and had to quickly turn into the left turn lane to avoid rear ending the car in front of me. i was very lucky to bring the vehicle to a stop after i crossed 3 feet into the intersection where a vehicle traveling from the west had to swerve to miss the protruding front clip of my big red silveradro truck

I was traveling at 48 mph while approaching a stop light when i applied the brakes, the pedal went all the way to the floor. i did a quick head check and had to quickly turn into the left turn lane to avoid rear ending the car in front of me. i was very lucky to bring the vehicle to a stop after i crossed 3 feet into the intersection where a vehicle traveling from the west had to swerve to miss the protruding front clip of my truck. once i got the vehicle home, i proceeded to locate the problem, i found it was a severely rusted brake line under the driver side door going into the anti-lock control modual that had ruptured. at that point i realized that all the break lines were in the same severely rusted condition and must be replaced before taking the vehicle back on the road. i cant believe this has been under investigation since early 2012 & nothing has been done to correct this safety issue. what else can i do to speed the resolution up? this needs to be addressed before someone gets badly injured or killed!

I was driving the truck and when i to put on the brakes, the pedal went to the floor. i instantly had no brakes, no warning lights or anything. there was a car stopped in the road in front of me and was nothing i could do so i ended up rear ending them, totaling their car. when looking under the truck i realized the brake lines had busted due to rust. i have never had as much as a speeding ticket and now have a wreck on my record due to faulty lines that has happen to many people. after i looked into it i seen its being investigated but something needs done, this is very dangerous and is gonna kill people if not fixed and recalled. *tr

My 1999 chevy silverado pickup truck experienced a brake line failure in my driveway, i was going 5 mph or less when both of my brake line failed causing me to rear end my daughters car parked in the driveway, lucky her car was there or i would have run into the garage door. i had the brake lines repaired, they must have only replaced the sections that broke since aprox. 1 year later one of the brake lines broke again when i was out of state, i had the section that broke replaced just before the repair shop closed and i was able to get back home. today another section of brake line broke i am getting this repaired and any remaining old brake lines replaced, also my emergency brake is broken i'm not sure what the problem is yet. *tr

Brake pedal went to the floor during application, lost control of braking and had to use emergency brake to stop. checked underneath the vehicle and brake lines are all badly corroded. *tr

Vehicle brake lines found to be severely corroded. brake line material is not suitable for service in normal conditions and in my case the frame and other undercarriage do not exhibit similar corrosion. investigation of the lines found corrosion throughout the brake system, particularly around the abs controller, located at the midpoint of the vehicle on the drivers side inside frame rail. in talking with friends/co-workers i learned of two incidents, one with a 2002 silverado 2500 having a similar failure where the line failed at stop while the line was under pressure. another friend had a failure in his 2001 silverado 1500 while applying brakes to stop a the bottom of a hill. the brakes failed due to a ruptured line and the owner was able to gear down, roll through the stop sign and turn onto a side road. a higher profile incident involved a co-worker with a 2001 silverado 2500 pulling a travel trailer. while coming to a stop, the brake line ruptured and the vehicle ran the red light. the owner was able to stop the vehicle using the travel trailer electric brakes. i work at a large chemical company headquartered in kingsport, tn. this incident was the subject of a safety newsletter that is circulated at the kingsport site in 2013. searches of internet forums find multiple similar incidents due to brake line rupture some involving injury. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that there was extensive rust and corrosion on the brake lines. as a result, the brake lines prematurely fractured several times. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who replaced the brake lines twice; however, the failure recurred. the contact stated that the abs warning light illuminated and the brake pedal sank to the floor. the vehicle was to be towed to an independent mechanic a third time for inspection and diagnosis. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

This is the second of two incidents of when i was pulling my truck out of my driveway to find i had no brakes as a result of corroded brake lines. both incidents did not resolve in an accident since i am an aware driver. but the fact that i have had to separate brake lines corrode through has me nervous to drive the vehicle as i'm unsure when it could occur. i am having all the lines replaced even if the mechanics don't recommend it. *tr

While driving, i depressed the brake and the pedal went all the way to the floor with minimal stopping power, i pulled over and saw a pool of brake fluid. after checking further notice the corroded brake line has ruptured. *js

I was driving down the highway and the light turned red. i pushed on the brake and the pedal went to the floor. i swerved around a car and ran through the light. luckily no one was going through it at that time. i then pulled over after i down shifted and used the emergency brake to stop. upon inspection, the line was rusted through and the rest of them were right behind the one that ruptured. gm should be ashamed. think they're waiting for someone to die, if they haven't already. *tr

I came up to a red light, engaged the brakes and the brake pedal slowly went to the floor. luckily there was not a vehicle in front of me or in the cross traffic, for i was not able to stop until i was well though the intersection. i was able to stop safely without injury. left rear brake line was rusted through. *tr

I was slowing down to drive around a sharp bend, when i pressed on my brake pedal and it dropped to the floor. i then down shifted, but could not stop. before my truck plummeted down a wooded hill ( the hill being approx 50-60 yards long) i jumped from my truck, but got caught between my truck and a stationary vehicle. i was then crushed, as my truck proceeded to plummet down the hill. this all causing the stationary car to have scrapes, and a dent where my body was, and causing severe bruising, swelling and abrasions of my upper legs, hips, and buttock, and i was unable to walk for 3 days after the incident because of leg weakness, every time i would put weight on my right leg it would give out, and cause a severe shooting pain up my leg into my lower back, and was unable to work for a week. *tr

Driving east on ohio state route at 40 - 45 mph slowing to make right turn applied brakes in a normal fashion and pedal went to the floor with minimal effect on vehicle velocity. *tr

My vehicle will not stop at slow speeds. the abs kicks in and extends the stopping distance by various amounts. *js

Backing boat into water at boat ramp. applied brakes to stop, pedal went to floor, slammed transmission into park and was able to stop without losing my boat and truck. inspected all lines--all corroded and seeping brake fluid. truck has only 105,000 miles, was rustproofed and undercarriage wash every week during winter. have had chevy vehicles and ran them up to 300,000 miles in the 70's and 80's and never had a brake line failure. it is obvious the lines are of low quality-purchased ss lines pending repair. *tr

Rear brake line (not brake hose) ruptured due to corrosion. i was still in my driveway when the line ruptured but, was five minutes from getting on the interstate. i was pulling a trailer when the rupture occurred. when i applied the brake the pedal went to the floor with no warning. my driveway is on a steep hill but, i was able to stop the vehicle with the parking brake before entering the street. very dangerous. i use this vehicle every day. this could have resulted in a serious accident since i was pulling a trailer and headed for the interstate, as stated earlier. i thought these vehicles with the split master cylinder still provided some braking in situations such as this. apparently not. *tr

Brake line failure due to corrosion two different times very lucky was not going fast, after inspection all brake lines are badly rusted. *tr

While coming down a hill to a red light, i applied my brakes and the brake went to the floor. as it went to the floor i heard a noise, turned my wheel to advoid hitting the car infront of me, i ran over a speed limit sign, only to miss a building by appling the parking brake. i was only going 25mph. a cop behind me heard the pop and stop to see if we (me, my fiance and child) were alright. when i talk to my mechanic, he said there has been alot of reports of the break lines failing in the silverado. that most of his other clients that have had this problem call a chevy dealer and they either paid for the repairs or given up to $500 to the repairs. i call jba chevrolet in glen burnie maryland, and they stated that they are unware of such a problem and refuse to look into or help in the repair. i have read of the concerns/reports of others and i am wondering why there is not a recall. families are at risk. what actions can i and other drivers take? chevy should be held responsible. *tr

Sudden brake failure when slowing to turn off the highway into a gas station. the brake pedal when completely to the floor with very little brake function. after inspection i found a hole rusted in one of the metal brake lines just below the drivers door. *tr

Dear sir or madam, i have a 1999 chevy silverado. i just had the brake lines burst on my chevy pickup. having heard it reported on the local news and reading about it on line that. it is an issue that needs to be address, gm needs to step up and fix their low quality work. toyota had to fix their gas pedal issue, this is a far worse issue when you have no brakes and your car is full of people. *tr

Replaced brakes and calipers bleed system then went to drive and when stopping no pedal at al. rear brakes work fronts don't. rebled brakes and with both front lines off there is no fluid coming out the lines and when testing the rear i get fluid coming out. my truck is disabled till i can fix this. *tr

My 1999 silverado had brake failure. the brake pedal went to the floor. upon inspection found a front and rear brake line had rusted and blown out. the warning light never came on. there are several lines that need to be replaced. i have six gm cars and never had this problem. my 1957 and 1963 and 1964 brake lines are in great shape. i live in nc and do not have the bad winter and exposure to road salts that some may say was the cause. thanks for your help. *js

The brake line on my chevy silverado pick up ruptured do to rust. the line is located just under the drivers door. it runs from the master cylinder to the abs block. *tr

I just spent over 2k replacing all of my brake lines with stainless steel the way the factory should have done it originally on my 1999 chevy silverado. my mechanic almost hit the bay door when the brake pedal went to the floor as the rusted brake line blew out. the local gm dealer that replaced the lines had another chevy in with the same problem and said they are getting 1 to 2 per week with the same, exact problem! i was lucky i wasn't driving on the interstate when the line blew out. someone is going to be killed and gm needs to do a recall. *tr

When stopping at stop sign pedal went almost all way to the floor. cycles pedal a few times afterthought coming to a complete stop. still went to floor and heard around like air or water rushing at each push of the brake pedal. upon investigation found leak on top side of main brake line spraying brake fluid in upward direction into rear driverside cab floor. brakeline appears to be pitted with corrosion with large hole. i do not live in a salt air environment. *tr

Put brakes on and pedal went to floor, finally got truck stopped and brake fluid was pouring from under cab. the brake lines are badly rusted. *tr

I could have been killed, as well as the police officer i almost hit at the stoplight and the people in cross traffic i would have pushed him into, when my brakes failed due to rusted out brake lines. no warning lights to tell me there was a problem and still no warning light, even though i have no brakes. the only reason i was able to stop is because i was not going the full speed limit due to groceries stacked on the seat beside me; with downshifting to low range one and pumping the brakes repeatedly to gain maybe 5 to 10% pressure, i only stopped about 5 to 10 feet behind the officer. add another 10-15 mph and it would have been impossible to stop. an average driver would have most likely wrecked at full speed. the line burst on the driver's side, under where the door jam starts. all the brake lines are rusted. i've had two 1971 chevy trucks and a 1964 plymouth valiant convertible and not a single one of them ever had a brake line problem. this truck is only 13 years old, very well taken care of, still looks new, regularly complimented on its condition and looks and it almost killed people! *tr

Rear brake line corroded and caused a break where brake fluid sprayed through the line when the brakes were applied. loss of braking distance. no accident. *tr

on oct. 10 2012, a car stop real fast in front of me and i had to apply my brakes. they did not work, went a around her and still could not stop. went through red light, dodging traffic. if i didn't know how to handle my truck i would have hit 6 different cars. i made it through that, went into parking lot still could not stop. i was head for a business and if i did not turn the wheel when i did i would have gone right into it. i hit a tree so i could stop. upon checking the brake lines we found out that they we rusted through. not only are the brake lines but the fuel lines are also like this. i love the truck but gm should do something about this. if i didn't know how tho drive there would have been several people killed that day, thank god i had someone watching over me on that day. *tr

Thankfully after removing my box of my truck to repair rust, i noticed severe corrosion/rust on the brake line that feeds the rear calipers (enough corrosion where it was bowing out and slightly leaking). i went out and purchased corrosion proof flex line and replaced the entire line. upon further inspection the entire line is basically corroded away. i started looking at the other lines and they all have this same problem i really can't afford to replace them all nor do i have the time, reading online i'm not the only one. this should be investigated, this is putting many lives at risk! please investigate this. gm needs to be held for this problem. *tr

Was moving the truck into garage to change oil.. hit brakes and pedal dropped a bit, brake fluid from rusted out line just below drivers floorboard. i've heard there was an issue with these...this is not the first line to go..this is a bad design. i live in northern indiana...part of the salt belt. *tr

Rear brake line burst. upon inspection found that all brake lines are severely corroded. *tr
