Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Both abs and brake lights on dash of 1999 chevy silverado 1500. low speed abs activation at random not included in recall because of where i live???? *tr

Abs failed, motor kept running until the fuse was pulled, went to dealer, i was told repairs would cost $800-1100 for repair. i was told there was a recall in the ice belt states, but not in the south.. the abs failed and caused an accident, i was traveling 35 mph with a 1000 pound trailer in tow, a vehicle suddenly stopped in front of me and i hit him, minor damage $2500. my point is the south has a humidity problem that causes electrical components to fail, we have salt air in mobile, alabama. this recall should be for all not just the ice belt c/k 1500 pickups. *tr

I have a 1999 chevy silverado. i have had to replace the brake lines due to a rupture as i was coming upon a 4 way intersection. thank god nothing was coming as i rolled through it. i made it home and to the shop the next day and had to replace all the brake lines. i have had to replace the parking brake pads on the rear which is a recalled item on a truck that has a manual shift transmission. what does the transmission have to do with brakes? shouldn't matter, just because there hasn't been an incident of a roll away with an automatic transmission. so why do they inspect the parking brake if you have an automatic transmission? because it is an emergency brake! with this truck you need it. you can find many complaints of the brake lines rusting out in the same year and make as my truck. there is an apparent problem with quality at gm and they should be held accountable. *tr

The incident happened while driving my 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. i was applying the brakes to come to a stop and once my speed went below 5 miles per hour the abs kicked in. this prevented me from stopping my vehicle immediately. i had to swerve to the side of the road to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. there was no damage to anyone or property. this began happening on a regular basis after this event. i had to remove the main fuse for the abs system to prevent it from recurring. i am waiting to have my vehicle looked at by a mechanic. my vehicle was included in a recall for a wheel speed sensor within the past two years. *tr

Electronic brake control module has failed, disabling the vehicle's anti-lock brake system. chevrolet wants $1500 for repair and it is a well documented common premature failure. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. there was a recall issued on the braking system, which included the rims, emergency brakes, and rotors. the abs light illuminated when the vehicle was started, but then dimmed after a few minutes. the failure occurred for over a week until the light remained completely illuminated. the dealer stated that the abs control box failed. chevrolet stated that the vehicle had too many miles to be repaired under the recall. the contact believes that if there was a recall on the entire braking system that was repaired when the vehicle had the same mileage, then the abs control box should be repaired under the recall as well. the failure mileage was 217,000 and current mileage was 224,000.

I have a 1999 chevrolet silverado and my abs light and parking brake light has came on recently. the braking on my truck is not very good in wet conditions. i found that it is a common problem on chevy trucks, and i was told that i should just remove the fuse. i was told it has something to do with the wheel hub assembly, and it is a costly fix. i think for once chevrolet should step up and put out a recall on this problem. there is also another common complaint about my dash cluster, which i had also found is a common problem, the odometer will go off and on when it feels like, and the gas gauge frequently goes up and down, and the fuel light comes on periodically. thank you for your time. *tr

Many complaints with this vehicle may get long but i am not sure as where to send them all.#1 window regulator failed three times, the first time i had to pay the full amount to get it fixed as the company recommended by the dealer went bankrupt before the warranty was up, i was never contacted about this. #2 broke two more, times dealer picked up cost on the second time but not on the third time the window is taped up as the dealer said they won't fix it as the 1 year warranty was up. anti lock sensor was only cleaned and is still acting up truck lurches after stops. dealer said that they probably won't do anything as they already cleaned the sensors. the truck was purchased used and i did not notice the bed on the truck had been repaired. it looks like it sits a little lower now on one side the service rep said there were spot welds where there shouldn't be but wouldn't comment beyond that. *tr

My 1999 chevy c/k pickup fails to stop quickly when traveling at low speeds. the abs turns on preventing the vehicle from stopping as you apply extreme pressure to the brake pedal. i am told by two separate mechanics that this is a common problem on similar models which have been recalled (nhtsa campaign # 05v379000) when contacting chevrolet they say their is nothing they can do as the recall does not include my vehicle by vin number even if it is the same part with the problem. *tr

Brake line rust at the anti-lock controller with all other brake lines in like new condition. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 25 mph, the brake pedal extended to the floor when depressed. the vehicle coasted to a repair shop. the mechanic stated that the steel brake line failed. the contact has the old parts if needed. the current and failure mileages were 80,000. *updated 12/27/07 *lj the consumer stated failure was above and below drivers foot and involved the brake line. updated 12/12/07 *tr

The abs is activating at low speeds mostly during parking maneuvers. the truck has been serviced under the front sensor recall but the repair did not solve the problem. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while the contact was driving approximately 55 mph, the abs and parking brake warning indicators illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and they stated that the electronic brake module failed. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 88,000. updated 05/03/11*lj the consumer stated the abs control module needed to be replaced. also, the brakes lines were rusted. updated 05/19/11

Anti-lock brake light and the brake light on the dash cluster comes on and stays on while driving. *tr

1999 chevy silverado 4 wheel drive abs brain board failed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado c1500 extended cab. the contact noticed that both of the tailgate support cables failed, which caused the tailgate to drop down to the bumper while driving approximately 55 mph. she had to excessively pump the brake pedal in order to effectively stop the vehicle. on one occasion, the brake pedal nearly extended to the floor. she took the vehicle to the auto repair shop and was informed that the abs sensors on the brakes were the cause of the failure. the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id numbers 06v066000 (structure:body:tailgate:hinge and attachments) and 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 97,000 and failure mileage was approximately 93,000.

Abs light came on, then a electric motor sound from under the vehicle, taken to a dealership, was a failed abs module. had to be replaced. this was the second time in 6 year this has been replaced, the first time was covered by warranty, this time coast 1180 dollars to replace, i feel gm has a problem with the system, and this should be a recall problem. *nm

For several months i had noticed that the abs would occasionally engage at low speeds on dry pavement, resulting in increased pedal travel and increased stopping distances. then on december 15, as i left the house and had driven about 100 yards, i heard a grinding sound coming from the abs unit next to the transfer case, and the noise stopped when i pulled the abs fuse. i called o'brien chevrolet, and the earliest they could look at it was december 20. they looked at it, and told me that the abs unit had developed an internal short, and would have to be replaced, costing about $1200.00. i was shocked! this truck is in like-new condition, with only 37,200 miles, and its always been kept in a garage or a carport. i can't believe that 37,200 miles is a normal service life of a general motors abs unit before they develop shorts and have to be replaced. *jb

Last fall i reported to nhtsa that a solid brake line tubing failed on my 1999 silverado which i lost braking power which almost caused me to go over the side of the mountain just before kingwoo wv. i had this repair done a the chevy dealer in nearby oakland md named team one. no response was received from nhtsa. wednesday this past week i was heading for clarksburg vamc when the second ridged brake line cracked as the first. again i almost lost the vehicle as i was gong down hill just outside kingwood and almost lost the truck over the mountain. again i got it this time to joe romeos chevy dealer where i purchased the truck. same findings as the first and they reiterated that this was normal wear and tear and my extended warranty would not cover it, but i stated how can lines that should have been stainless steel or rust resistant that fail be excluded from the warranty? i asked this of gm last week and all i got was a beat around the bush answer and they would not pay. this leaves me with over $400 in repair bills i have to pay. my truck has been at the latest dealer for almost a week now with hopes of getting it back today. this what i call inferior parts but my electric wheel chair that is in back of the vehicle i do have use of. [xxx],of crl and assoc motorcycle safety consultant. also i mentioned the dealer has knowledge of others that they broke in same manor as mine. *jb information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 65 mph on normal road conditions, the wheels locked up. the vehicle spun 180 degrees resulting in the vehicle facing the traffic. also while applying pressure to the brakes, it went all the way to the floor. the design of braking system was 4-wheel antilock. the nature of the failure was permanent. the failed part was available upon request and there was no repair invoice. the abs light illuminated after the incident occurred. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who determined that the abs module needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified.

I have a 1999 chevrolet silverado pick up truck that the brake lines have corroded and failed rendering the brakes useless. fortunately, this happened in my driveway and not on the highway. i have had to have all these lines replaced. this truck is only 7 years old and my service garage has stated to me that they replace brake lines on late model chevrolet trucks at least once a month. i have written chevrolet about this problem and i did not received a response. i believe there is a serious problem with the brake line material or manufacture of these items. *nm

Tl*- the contact stated that the 1999 chevrolet silverado 1550 extended cab antilock brake pump continued to come on and stay on. he had to disconnect the antilock brake pump about one month after he purchased the vehicle. the contact stated that there was recall o5v379000 for the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock. he stated that the recall was repaired about six months ago, the pump already failed prior to recall. the failure mileage was 61,150, and the current mileage was 135,000.*ak the 4 wheel drive light stays illuminated and there was a leak coming from the drivers door. update 05/04/07*tr

Dt*: the contact stated the abs light illuminated intermittently and the vehicle required excessive stopping distance. the dealership replaced the wheel sensor, but the problem persisted. there was an nhtsa recall, #05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.

Dt*: the contact stated while rotating the tires, there was extreme corrosion on the rotors, and upon further inspection the parking brake was extremely worn as well. the vehicle was exposed to harsh winter weather, but road salts were not used. there is a nhtsa recall, #05v161000, regarding the parking brake. the vehicle vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was alerted.

I noticed pressing the brakes at slow speed the brakes became soft and the abs system kicked in. there is a recall for this exact thing in certain states but not mine and i am being told i have to pay 800$ to repair it. *jb

Antilock brake module failure. *nm

Recalls claimed to be done, i've never taken truck in for recalls. chevolet refuses to release where recalls were completed at. *nm

Abs controller failed on 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup truck. *tr

Abs light coming on. may go a week before it comes on or the next time i start the truck up no pattern brakes still work , 99 silverado. *nm

1999 chevy silverado 1500 2wd, i have no abs brakes have not had them for years the abs module went out the truck was barley 6 years old to expensive to fix. *kb

Brake line failure!! wife came to pick me up at work seen fluid dripping from underneath truck -brake fluid got home and found the line was rotted by the back drivers side wheel replaced damaged section blown out the 2nd time by abs motor replaced bad section again blown out 3rd time inspected entire brake line found corrosion everywhere i looked. contacted my dealer and was told quite rudely that there was nothing in chevrolets recalls about brake lines. have also replaced the back rotors (twice). my abs motor also started acting up pulled fuse. how many reports do you nhtsa have to get before you make this company fix their bad design? i'm sure if someone in your family was hurt in one of these vehicles or hit by one that a mandatory recall would happen in a snap. or does chevrolet have you in their backpocket................ *tr

1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup customer states that he received a recall letter for the abs and after getting brakes fixed the pickup started having problems with starting idling**cc the consumer took the vehicle back to dealer, who then stated the abs motor was running constantly and the fuse needed to be pulled or the battery would die. once the fuse was pulled, the noise stopped. the dealer said to fix the problem would be costly and to just drive the vehicle. once the consumer left the dealer the brake light illuminated, the consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer and it was determined that the abs module was bad. the consumer stated everything was fine before the recall was performed. the consumer was told the starting problems were due to the fuel pressure regulator needing to be replaced. the dealer decided to split the cost of the abs module with the consumer. *tr

After changing all four brake rotors and brake pads because they were badly rusted, my brakes failed soon after leaving home . a pin hole leak developed in the brake line because of rust. the leak was in a place that was not accessible by me. i had to have the vehicle towed to a dealer for repairs. they found four badly rusted brake lines and replaced all four at a cost of $953.16. the towing charges were covered by my allstate auto club. i forget to request the old parts. i was fortunate the failure occurred shortly after leaving home and did not cause an accident like the failure of the rusted brake line in my 1988 chevy truck caused. i rear ended a car in that incident. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact received a recall notice in the mail to have the brakes serviced. the dealer replaced the brakes, but was now charging the contact for other services that were included in the recall. the dealer stated that other parts on the vehicle assisted in causing the brakes to fail. the manufacturer suggested that the contact's driving habits may be the reason for the failure. also, the dealer stated that the contact should get used to the brakes jumping, and needed to replace the entire brake system. the current and failure mileage were 75,000.*ak

Dt*: the contact stated the abs activates at speeds below 5 mph. there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin. updated 2/13/2006 - *nm

Dt: the contact stated there was pulsation, and the abs brakes engaged at low speeds, resulting in extended stopping distance. there was nhtsa recall campaign 05v379000 regarding the anti-lock brakes. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it was not included in the recall due to the vin. no repairs have been made.*ak updated 02/07/06. *jb

Antilock brakes wants to engage at low speeds. *nm

Antilock brakes wants to engage at low speeds and the front drivers seat released when stopping causing thrust forward. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 2 mph into a service dealer, the brake was applied and the brake pedal began to pulsate and the abs system made a banging noise in the front of the vehicle. the brake was not responsive at all. the vehicle collided with the service door. there was 3200 worth of damage done to the service door and 1500 dollars in damage to the truck the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who replaced the right front hub assembly. the repair fixed the problem. the manufacturer was also notified. there abs engage when it wasn't necessary. updated 01/10/07. *jb

I have a 1999 chevy silverado. last week i went to the chevy dealership and had them fix the wheel speed sensor under the recall for the abs activation. i told them that i pulled the fuse for the abs motor a while back and i didn't have a replacement. to my surprise, he said that fixing the wheel speed sensor would not fix the abs problem i was having. he said this without any details as to why i pulled the fuse. he said that the problem was the abs motor. he said that the circuit packs within the motor are shorted and the motor would have to be replaced. it seemed like he has seen this problem many times before. even seemed annoyed when i asked further about it. i got the feeling that he has to answer questions about this all the time. everyone i know with this same vehicle is having the same problem. the mechanic i use to go to told me that he sees this problem all the time on chevy's and gms from around 1999. he owns a 2000 gm sierra and is having the same problem. gm put out a recall for the abs, but are not fixing the problem completely. chevy dealership told me it would cost about $800.00 to replace the motor. i feel like gm took the cheap way out by fixing the wheel speed censor. is everyone else with this problem being fooled thinking that their abs problem is going to be fixed with this recall that is currently out? why is gm concerned about one safety issue (the cheap one) and not another (the expensive one)? *nm

Dt: there is a recall on the anti lock brakes . the contact's vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin. the brakes grab only at low speeds. the contact is experiencing the same symptoms as indicated in the recall but the vehicle is not included. the vehicle has not been to a dealer or service repair shop. the contact has called chevrolet ,who offered no assistance other than filing a complaint. no repairs or corrections at this time. *ak

Dt: the consumer stated that the anti lock brakes were activating at low speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they cleaned the front hubs of rust. then the abs worked properly, but the abs and brake light would come on. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership, and they found that there was an internal electrical failure in the brake control module. they performed nhtsa recall 05v379000 repairs. when driving the vehicle off of the lot it almost hit another car. the vehicle was taken back to the service department and they disconnected the fuse for the abs and the abs light stayed on. the vehicle would not pass inspection. the consumer contacted gm and they stated that the problem was not related to the recall and the consumer would have to pay for repairs out of pocket. *ak (12/01/05) the tow haul mode was inoperative. *sc

I have a 1999 chevy silverado, walked out started truck and the abs module failed and ran constantly as with thousands of other chevy truck owner have done as well, this is a shame. gm needs to own up to their mistakes and take care of this problem. this is a very dangerous situation now having abs in a snowbound state, also what if this module failed going down the road in a braking situation when it was needed? this is going to cause a lot of collisions. this is a faulty part put onto he trucks by gm to try and save money, seems funny that the abs modules prior to the 1999 models have no issues with them what so ever. come on gm step up to your mistakes. *jb

My 1999 silverado pickup truck is having braking trouble where the abs system kicks on during normal dry conditions. it has caused me to have some near misses while trying to stop the vehicle.*jb

Dt*: the contact stated both abs brake warning lights illuminated when the vehicle was started. when the vehicle was turned off, there was a clicking sound, so a wire was disconnected from the abs system. when restarted, the warning lights remained illuminated. the service dealer and manufacturer were notified. the consumer stated the seat belts tighten up at times and won't release, unless they are unbuckled. updated 12/01/06. *jb

Dt: hydraulic brakes problem 09/04 brake pedal is very stiff at low speeds. this causes extended stopping distance. a mechanic friend states it is the speed sensor in the anti-lock brake system. no warning. happens in any conditions. intermittent, happens under normal braking conditions. permanent. can't depress, the consumer must pump the brakes when attempting to stop at lows speeds. the brakes have serviced regularly as well as the vehicle. *jb

I own a 1999 chevrolet silverado made in the usa and the abs system fails to stop at 5 mph. the vehicle will not stop and the brake has to be released and preassure reapplied.

Antilock brake illumination on panel goes on and off for no apparent reason. brakes, rotors and drums were checked, various other problems include, water pump replaced, starter replaced, radiator replaced, heater core problems, alternator replaced, certain illumination lights on radio come on. *nm

Failure of antilock brakes. brakes come on at low speeds almost causing accidents. *nm

On several different occasions my 1999 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton would have a malfunction with the antilock braking system. the problem would occur when i was braking to stop at an intersection or driving into a parking space. every time the system would have the tendency to increase in speed when applying the brake. at one time it caused very minor damage to a building. every time it was taken in for service at the local chevrolet dealership and cleaning was done to the antilock system. i read about the upcoming investigation into this problem and was interested to see if this will be a recall to repair the problems?
