We have classified the 103 complaints from 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that when attempting to brake, the vehicle would continue moving another five feet before the brakes would grab. also, the contact was driving at 60 mph on the highway when the vehicle suddenly completely shut down. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that a new starter and new fuel sending unit needed to be installed. the vehicle was repaired at that time. the rear seal on the engine was leaking oil; the dealer repaired the seal. the contact also noticed that the rotors were peeling; the contact repaired the problem at his expense. the braking issue was the most recent problem and had not been corrected at the time of the complaint. the manufacturer had not been notified of the brake problem. the current mileage was approximately 140,000. the failure mileage was approximately 138,000.
Defective brake lines - i was pulling into a gas station when a car leaving pulled right out in front of me, i applied the brakes to keep from hitting the car and the brake pedal went completely to the floor. luckily i was not going that fast and managed to swerve and coast to a stop. while investigating the condition of the brake lines for repair, i have discovered that all the brake lines are so corroded they will all have to be replaced. i would expect this from a vehicle that was 20 - 30 years old, but not from a 1999 model. i have a 1988 mustang with brake lines that look 10x better than the 1999 silverado that i just crawled out from under today...i can only imagine what this is going to cost me to replace. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving approximately 40 mph and attempting to stop at a traffic light, the brake pedal extended to the floorboard. the contact stated that the vehicle moved through the traffic light and then stopped. the contact drove home and noticed that the brake lines were corroded; he replaced the entire brake line himself. the failure mileage was approximately 121,500 and the current mileage was 122,786.
Applied brakes when coming to a stoplight, brake peddle went to the floor, and ran into the car in front of me. this is the second time in the past 2 or 3 month i've had this happen. the steel brake line running along the frame ruptured, they were different line each time. the dealer spliced new lines into the original lines each time. *tr
Emergency brakes fail inspection every year since i owned the vehicle from normal wear and tear. i have them worked on every year to pass state requirements, costing lots of money. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving approximately 20 mph with pressure applied to the brake pedal extended to the floor, the vehicle would not stop until the parking brake was engaged. upon examining the vehicle he noticed that the brake lines were covered with rust and one of them was broken. the vehicle was in the process of being taken to an authorized dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 78,000. the vin was not available.
As i approach a stop, at very low speeds, the abs unit kicks in with a sudden shutter and extends the stop time and distance. this started about 3 months ago and has not gotten better or worse. it is unnerving to have this happen when i need to stop at an intersection or approaching a traffic signal turning red. research on the internet indicates a nhtsa campaign id 05v37900 pe05020 was issued for this very same problem, including those vehicles in my state. i have been told, both by chevrolet and nhtsa, that my vehicle's vin number was not included in gm recall no. 05068, therefore not their nor your problem. i am upset that i have been rebuffed and want to know why my vehicle doesn't matter and the other ones do. i have had many problems with the truck's disc brakes over the years but this one concerns me very much since i don't know if or when they may fail in an emergency. thanks you for your attention. i am awaiting your response.
I was on a highway, had to stop suddenly, hit the brakes, there was a pop, and the brakes completely failed!!! i managed to avoid traffic by going into a ditch. two brake shops have agreed, all brake lines are completely rusted out. will cost over $3000+ to fix. major safety problem on these trucks!!!!!!!! *tr
My brake line on my 1999 chevy silverado busted while trying to stop. all the brake lines are rusted under the driver side running along the frame. *tr
1999 chevy silverado extended cab four wheel drive. was driving the other day when i lost my brakes completely. thankfully was able to coast to a safe spot and i was on a road with no traffic. the rear brake line was rusted out right behind the gas tank on the drive side, and upon further inspection all of the brake lines need replacing. whole undercarriage of vehicle is rusted out, extensive corrosion on everything. rocker panels were rusted out along with the bedsides and cab corners. brake line is my main concern though, as this is a major problem on a lot of their vehicles. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving, the abs suddenly activated at speeds less than 10 mph. the vehicle would stop short when the contact depressed the brake pedal due to brake line corrosion. the contact called the dealer who stated that the vehicle was not included in recall 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock). the manufacturer had not been notified. the failure mileage was approximately 98,000. updated 01/04/11*lj updated 01/10/11
I have a 1999 chevy silverado, that had brake failure. i pressed the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. there was a leak in a rusted brake line next to the abs module. all of the lines look very corroded and the whole undercarriage looks very corroded. i was going to replace the brake line myself, but all of the lines are so rusted, i don't know if i can. *tr
1999 silverado 1500 4wd truck with rusting brake lines. *tr
Hit brakes hard because traffic no brakes. i missed the car in front and was able too exit express way with my wife & 3 young adults (my son & two daughter in the back seat. it blew under my drivers seat . when i went to repair all brake lines needs to be replaced. plus the more i look on-line and people i talk too everyone is having the same problem. body&frame rust ,what can i do? *tr
There is an issue with the brake system on the 2001 chevrolet silverado pick-up that chevrolet has failed to address satisfactorily. the trucks were recalled due to an issue with the speed sensor that would cause the brakes to fail. in 2005 chevrolet recalled the trucks for this issue and supposedly put rust protestant on the speed sensor to protect it from failing. in 2010 i was nearly involved in a traffic crash when my brakes failed. the dealership advised that the speed sensor went bad. i contacted chevrolet and they failed to properly address this situation. in doing research i found that this is not an isolated incident and needs to be addressed before someone is killed or injured as a result of faulty brakes. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving approximately 10 mph, the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal and the antilock braking system engaged independently. he also experienced an increase in stopping distance and time. the failure recurred whenever he would apply the brake pedal when driving at low speeds. the manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that his vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 84,000.
Brake line failure. happened to 1 line twice within a year, and the following year another line broke. all lines have been replaced. this is on a 1999 chevy pick-up. the lines were so bad in 10 years, had to be replaced. i believe this is a safety issue, other vehicles i've had at least 20 yr, never happened. i've seen a 2003 chevy pickup that in a short period of time will also need replaced. i believe the manufactures have bought cheap steel lines for these vehicles and this to me is a safety issue and i believe this should be corrected as brakes are very important on any vehicles rolling down the highway. cannot understand why stainless steel or other line that is subject to the weather are not on these vehicles as the extra cost would not be that much per vehicle, in the long run it would be cheaper and safer to have these installed on these vehicles. *tr
I own a 1999 chevy silverado. i was going around a blind down hill turn, when i got around the turn there was a car completely on my side of the road. i slammed on the brakes, the truck slowed but did not stop, and the brake pedal went to the floor. after i was able to stop the truck, i found that the steel brake line running along the frame had ruptured. the location of the rupture was under the drivers side door. i took the truck to my local chevy dealer and had the line replaced. *tr
The brakes failed on my 1999 chevrolet silverado recently. a mechanic replaced all brake lines due to corrosion. *tr
On 4/5/10 while stopping at a red light at 93rd and broadway, crown point, in. i had a brake failure. the pedal went to the floor and my truck barely stopped. i had my truck trailered home. i discovered that the rear brake line had rusted out. i have not repaired the brake line yet. *tr
All this due to rusted out brake lines. on 3/9/10 i was approaching a stop sign in a 35mph zone. i put my foot on the brake pedal and the pedal went to the floor. i was able to give it a few pumps and i stopped in time. i immediately drove 4 blocks to auto shop. the mechanic found a ruptured brake line going to the back brakes due to rust. four days later i had to return my truck to the shop because my back brakes were sticking. i was informed that rust and corrosion had gotten into the back hoses and/or calipers and would not release properly. at that time he replaced the rear hoses and calipers. on 10/2/11 i had brake failure again. this time it was the front brakes. my mechanic informed me that it was a brake line coming off the abs unit in the front of the truck. there are five brake lines in that area and they were all rusted. he said he would have to replace all of them because they would eventually fail. at that time, the front brake calipers were so rusted that he could not bleed the brakes, and he suggested to replace the hoses and calipers and all five brake lines, which i did. he also told me there is a cross brace on the frame that was almost rusted thru and needed to be taken to a welder to be fixed. *kb
My 1999 chevy silverado 1500 4wd (purchased new by me) has had multiple corrosion/rust brake line failures that first began when the vehicle was only three years old. one event left me desperate as the failure occurred when backing my 8,000lb boat down a steep boat ramp into the water. the abs module also failed to operate when only two years old. all of this has led to extremely expensive repairs and modifications at my expense. my truck was not included in the previous rust belt states recall as i live in virginia. *tr
Brakes failed towed to garage mechanic said brake lines rusted out that were bolted to drivers side frame and that frame on drivers side was rusted to the point that the vehicle would not pass another safety inspection in september called gm in detroit to find out if there were recalls and if there was something they could do to correct the problem they said no so i took picturesand am taking vehicle to be fixed next week with a new frame
I have a 1999 ext. cab chevy silverado, my abs ,brake, and low fuel warning lights stay lite up until i turn off vehicle. and i have fuel and replaced brakes and the these warning lights still come on. *tr
1999 chevy silverado p/u had rusty brake lines causing total brake failure. spent over $5000 at dealer to correct problem. all hydraulic lines had to be replaced. gm refused to reimburse me for any of the repairs or repair brakes to my satisfaction. *tr
Brakes do not work very good at speeds less than 8 mph. *tr
My brakes went out while driving my 1999 gm pickup. i was lucky to stop without an injury. i had to replace all my brake lines. this was a cost of $2,073.00 dollars. i am a disabled veteran on a fixed income. i do plan to send a letter to gm about this issue. *tr
I own a 1999 silverado extended cab 2wd ls pickup truck. i nearly ran through my parents garage when the brake line suddenly ruptured and leaked. upon further investigation all the lines are terribly corroded and rusted to a point of being brittle( even lines under the hood where they are typically protected) i was happy that i was not on the highway when this occurred. i have since changed the main line to the rear of the truck with a better quality line and am waiting to do the balance but am uneasy and will probably have to just do them. this truck also had rusty transmission lines that caused transmission failure since i did not catch it in time when the line rotted out. what is going on when a company cant put quality materials in a system critical part? the rear plates that shield the parking brake completerusted and fell off. *tr
Rotted brake lines. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving and hauling a trailer at approximately 35 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal but the brakes did not engage so the vehicle went through a red traffic light. the contact noticed the brake line seemed completely rusted. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 140,000.
Unnecessary abs activation at slow speed. abs wheel speed sensor output found to be low. vehicle was previously serviced by dealer (1/18/06) under gm recall 05068. service consisted of 'removing and cleaning abs wheel speed sensors'. subsequent failure indicates that the corrective action does not adequately address the underlying defect. *tr
Brake line blew out due to corrosion when pulling to a stop light, was able to stop the truck w/o incident. this was 8aug09. repaired on 12aug09. on 5aug11 went to replace shocks thinking they were shot, problem discovered, entire shock mount rail assembly had rusted away from the frame and is hanging in the air. mileage: 148876. on 30sep11 gas tank dropped to the ground due to corrosion of frame, and also exhaust system components have rotted away from the frame and now hanging, there are also some cracks in the frame, mileage 149476. there is no rust or damage to the body on this truck at all. it still looks like a new truck. the frame is rotting away from under the truck. i should have bought a ford. will never buy another chevy. from what i see, this is a known problem that gm knows all about and refuses to do anything about all these trucks. gm should recall and replace everyone's frames on trucks like mine that have perfect bodies before someone gets killed. *tr
Was getting the truck inspected and the brakes failed. the guy said that the brakes were loose and he had to push the pedal all the way to the floor to get the truck to step. he also notices corrosion and brake fluid leaking. *tr
Vehicle: 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup truck. i received a telephone call from my daughter. while driving the truck, she said that when she applied the brakes, the brake pedal went almost to the floor before the truck slowed, and a warning light lit on the dash board. i went to where the truck was parked. i checked the brake fluid reservoir. it was low, so i added brake fluid. i than tried the brakes, by pumping the pedal a couple of times. i got out and looked under the truck, and found a puddle of brake fluid. looking carefully, i could see that it wasn't leaking from any fitting, so it had to be a broken brake line. there was a monro shop near by, so i brought the truck there. after looking the brake lines over, they found that one ruptured due to corrosion, and the remaining lines were badly corroded. i had all of the brake lines replaced at a cost of just over $1,000. i have owned vehicles in connecticut since 1975. this is the first one that ever had it's metal brake lines corrode so badly that one ruptured and all had to be replaced. i also wish to point out that the parking brake doesn't operate correctly. it's a sad statement that there was a recall for this problem that was limited to manual transmission vehicles. i guess that it's assumed by nhtsa that automatic transmission vehicles don't need parking brakes? *tr
Complaint involves a 1999 chevy silverado 1500 4x4 abs activates at low speeds (typical <5 mph). experienced multiple near-misses of low speed crashes when braking; one involving a pedestrian. failure occurs on average 1 out of 2 times when braking. brought vehicle to gm dealer - balise chevrolet/oldsmobile, w. springfield, ma - on 7/16/09. vehicle mileage was 122,846. this is the same dealer from which vehicle was purchased original in 1999. dealer diagnosed problem as probable corrosion at both front speed sensors. recommended cleaning and possible replacement of both sensors at cost of $234.25. i informed dealer that this was the same problem that occurred prior to recall 05068 (nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000) where both front wheel speed sensors were inspected and replaced at 73,428 miles on 10/13/05. dealer checked vehicle records and confirmed. dealer was asked to repair at no charge based on recurring problem but declined. contacted gm customer assistance on 7/20/09 and spoke with representative (service report 71-742297566) who reiterated that gm would not repair at no charge based on prior replacement of parts under last recall. she gave me the name of the gm manager at chevrolet to whom written complaints should be sent. *tr
Brake line failure due to corrosion of brake line. all brake fluid drained out with no brake indicator (dash) lites illuminating. total brake failure. 1999 chevy silverado. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving approximately 45 mph. the anti-lock brake system and parking brake warning light indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the warning indicators remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. the anti-lock brake system became nonfunctional with a spongy brake pedal. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the technician stated that the anti-lock brake system module required replacement. the manufacturer was notified of the malfunctions. the vehicle has not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the current mileage was 95,800. the failure mileage was 88,000.
1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 4wd standard cab 4.3 v-6 -failure in brake line , i was stopped in line at drive thru and felt brake pedal go down and heard break fluid squirt from line, investigated problem and found a hole in line due to rust , location of problem was below drivers door where line runs along frame, will have to replace line, will keep old line for inspection if needed. *tr
For the past two weeks i've noticed that when i apply pressure to the brakes the truck does not stop immediately. it rolls a little and it scares me because i am pressing the brake into the floor of the truck with both feet. this is happening every time i drive and with this being the only transportation i have, i have to continue to drive it. i am currently calling around for quotes and notice that there may be a recall on this problem but it is currently being researched because of relations to the problem being salt crystals. either way this not normal wear and tear. its a problem for certain chevy models and year. i've been informed that it may be the master cylinder or the booster. either way i need to get it fixed but if there is going to be a recall, it needs to happen soon. i have been quoted an estimated price of at least $300. *tr
1999 chevrolet truck, frame is rusting at an alarming rate. all of the brake lines have been replaced after two different failures. at age 70 and having worked on cars for years as a hobbie, i have never see a vehicle rust so bad. the brake lines were gone. i could have wrecked because of the failure. *tr
I was driving to store. going down a fairly steep hill, applied brakes started to slow down then lost my brakes. the brake lines were rusted thru. had new brake lines installed. *tr
Vehicle is having abs problems. there was a recall (74013) issued 8/29/05 which only covered vehicles in certain states, not virginia. since brakes are a safety issue it seems that it should be. i called gm and they informed me it was not (71-716605105 claim #). problem started with abs light coming on, took to repair shop and was told abs unit & ecm unit needed replacing (4/10/09). total bill 1940.00. *tr
Abs brakes kicking in at slow speeds when not needed. no lights on dash. no warnings when it will happen. usually when stopping at crosswalks, parking lots or gas stations by pump. probably tripling stopping distance. i almost hit a brick wall in the dealers parking lot but a curb stop stopped me luckily it was there. *tr
Vehicle antilock brakes activate at low speed when they should not increasing stopping distance substantially. the issue is described in recall 2005-630-2438. the vehicle was taken in for recall repair in july 2006. the vehicle did not exhibit the recall issues at the time of recall repair. the vehicle now has the issues but chevy insists i am responsible for the repair since they have already taken care of the recall. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. the vehicle was previously repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock), but the failure has recurred. the antilock brakes engaged and the stopping distance increased. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they informed him that the recall repair had been previously performed and he would have to pay for any additional repairs. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 44,000.
Abs system engages when braking on rough pavement such as rumble strips. abs light comes on intermittently. this problem has been ongoing for more than 4 years, but was reported on january 9 2009. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact received a recall notice in 2006 regarding nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the dealer removed the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly cleaned the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing; however, the failure recurred. while pulling into a parking space at 5 mph, the vehicle failed to stop because the abs engaged. the contact crashed the vehicle into a brick wall. there were no injuries. the vehicle was driven to an auto center and the mechanic pulled the fuse from the antilock brake. the failure is intermittent. the contact was informed that the hub assembly needed to be repaired. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they stated that she would be responsible for the repair costs because the vehicle was previously repaired according to the recall. the failure mileage was 190,000. updated 02-23-09 *bf updated 02/24/09. *jb
The abs and brake lights come on intermittently at random times while driving. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 15 mph, the contact heard a pulsating noise whenever the brake pedal was depressed. the antilock brakes activated suddenly and he crashed into another vehicle. the dealer stated that there were no recalls available for the failure and informed the contact to call general motors. general motors refused to repair the failure. the antilock brake was repaired two years prior to the recall. the failure and current mileages were 117,145.
Abs module went out on 1999 silverado that has 51000 miles. symptoms are that the module/pump continues running even with ignition turned off. in addition, abs dash light is on. dealer states that repair will be roughly $1000. internet chat room for like vehicle has literally 100's of people with exact same problem. only way to stop module/pump from running, aside from spending $1000, is to pull 60 amp fuse that enables the abs brakes. *tr
