I have 2005 monte carlo with 85,000 miles and now the instrument panel has gone south. the speedometer is off and the temp gage is not working. i have investigated and found many people have this same problem also my transmission is starting to slip. can you help? i will never buy another american car. *tr
Instrument panel cluster failed on a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo. panel cluster failed around 42,000 miles on the car. gas gauge does not work nor does the speedometer. or temp gauge. this issue is complained of in the same year vehicles. *tr
No events have lead up to the problem that i know of. while driving the car day to day my speedometer in my 2005 monte carlo lt seems to stick. it shows me going over the speed limit by 30 mph or more and stays there. this happens all the time. i have not done anything to repair or replace the problem as of today september 17, 2010. *tr
I was driving on the highway, and slowed down as i entered a town. once i got back onto the highway, and reset my cruise control, my speedometer read at 90mph. i was not going that fast. once i got stopped, i could see that my speedometer was reading at 30mph while in park. the problem has continued. at times, the speedometer reading will never go past 0mph and at others, it will read at 120mph when i first start my car. it will show that i'm accelerating and decelerating, but will fail to return to 0. i can also hear a clicking noise when it decelerates. at this point, i'm estimating how fast i'm going based on where my rpm gauge reads at. the only component to fail is the speedometer. *tr
October 27, 2009 was the 3rd time in 4 days that the speedometer and tachometer have stopped working while driving or failed to work period. i don't know what led up to the failure it just started when i was driving home from work on friday october 23, 2009 and my cruise control was set at 65 mph and i noticed my car started slowing down and i was almost rearended i gave the car some gas and i noticed that my speedometer wasn't working nor was my tachometer. i haven't had anything done to correct the problem. i searched the internet and i have noticed that many many people have had this issue with 2002 through 2005 monte carlo's. this is a very dangerous problem that needs to be addressed. this will eventually take a life if not addressed and fixed by chevrolet. there is clearly a huge problem that must be recalled. i had a 1999 chevy silverado that was recalled for faulty tailgate support cables. this problem is much more serious than that was and it was recalled so why not this? the instrument panel in a car is the drivers information center and a huge safety concern if it is proven to be faulty. speed control is required by all states and if a car manufacturer has an issue this big with one of its products then it needs to be addressed and not hidden. this problem is also present in many other gm vehicles as well. research it i did and i know there is a huge problem. i am sure you can reach the same conclusion. took me only 2 hours of research for me to react. how long will it take the government? maybe never since they now have a vested interest in gm or maybe a few huge lawsuits against government motors will change its mind. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that the speedometer does not register mileage beyond 65 mph. whenever the engine was shut off the speedometer resets and operates normally. the dealer stated via phone that for $600 they would replace the instrument cluster. there were no related recalls or warranties available. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 85,000.
Instrument gauges gone crazy. speedo reads 100mph sitting still. tach relines sitting still. gas gauge reads past full. etc.this in on a 2005 monte carlo with only 32,000 miles. dealer wants $500.00 plus to replace. *tr
I own a 2005 monte carlo, at around 50,000 miles began to have problems with instrument cluster. the fuel gauge and the alternator gauge failed. i have also had problems with the windshield wipers not returning to the set position, i do see that there has been service bulletins issued to for this. the instrument cluster has not been addressed by chevy and i have read many other complaints about this failure from other owners. the fix for this is to replace the entire instrument cluster, this is running between $450 and $650. i think this is a defect that chevy needs to replace free of charge. *tr
Certain lights in dashboard controls are burnt out. right now the problem just involves the tachometer, ignition illumination and driver heat/cool control indicator. problem is manageable during the daytime but at night, necessary parts of the dashboard do not illuminate. the problem is that the lightbulbs themselves cannot be replaced. the whole control board for that particular part of the dash ($300.00) must be replaced which is ridiculous on a four year old car. *tr
I own a 2005 chevy monte carlo. last year i noticed my speedometer and rpm and temp gauge stopped working. i've been searching for places to get it replaced and it just costs too much and will take 3-5 days for repair and i need my car for work. i have been using my gps to see how fast im going. i also looked online and have seen many complaints for the same problem. my oil gauge and gas gauge works fine. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 cheverolet monte carlo. the speedometer intermittenly failed to display the actual speed that the contact was driving. the failure mileage was 84000. the current mileage was 93000.
I began having trouble with this car a few months after i purchased it. i can't drive the car at night with the lights on bright, because when i do the lights shut completely off and the only way to get them to come back on is to flip the dimmer switch. i have been on the interstate and highway both, driving the posted speed limit when this has happened. this problem, in my opinion is a big hazard and very unsafe. i had to have the cruise control switch replaced, the instrument panel replaced, because it failed completely while i was going on vacation, i had no idea how much gas was in my car or what speed i was going all gauges were out of whack. the car smells like gasoline, i've taken this to the dealer auto repair shop, they claim they can't find the problem, even though they could smell the gas both on the outside and inside of car. there was a recall on the key, i took into dealer and they put a cover over the old key, i personally don't understand how that was supposed to take care of whatever the problem was. i have noticed that others on here have listed similar complaints about this car. what i'd like to know is, if there are so many people having the exact same problems with these cars, why hasn't there been a recall issued? i can't speak for anyone else, but i paid hard earned money for this car and i'm sick and tired of having to constantly repair stuff, which seems to be a big problem on this make and model. i think something needs to be done before someone gets seriously injured or worse. and it shouldn't take someone's life before something is done about this.
Speedometer and inside dash lights erratic stopped working, no accident. *tr
My 2005 monte carlo's speedometer doesn't reset to zero. it sticks at 23 mph even when shut-off. it shows about 63 mph when i am really doing about 40 mph. or sometimes 70 mph when really about 40-45 mph. this speedometer is faulty/defective from the manufacturer. gm should have to recall this 2005 chevy monte carlo and pay for the $500-$600 repair bill. please talk with the government to demand a recall and force gm to pay the repair bills for these cars from 2003 through 2007 ghm vehicles (about 10 models). *tr
All gauges have failed. 2005 chevrolet monte carlo. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving approximately 70 mph on normal road conditions, the cruise control mechanism was activated. unexpectedly, the speedometer and rpm gauges failed without warning. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they stated that the instrument panel failed. the instrument panel was replaced. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 51,000 and current mileage was 52,000.
Recently with no apparent precipitating factor the speedometer on my 2005 chevy monte carlo has begun acting erratically with speed readouts vacillating and then sticking at about 32 mph, when i am obviously going at least 65 mph. this is a serious problem that needs to be fixed and is apparent in many other monte carlos according to other car forums. *tr
My car speedometer will get stuck, read a mph that is 20 to 40 mph higher or it will peg out at 120+ and sometimes wont repair itself until the next day. to my understanding gm has a recall on several vehicles using the same gauge step motors but does not include this model or others that use this same part. i believe this is a safety concern because i have no idea how fast im traveling. i would really appreciate your help. *tr
Instrument panel starting to go out. tachometer works sporadically, oil gauge and temp gauge do not work at all. speedometer and gas gauge are still working. trying to hold out on repair until totally dysfunctional. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy monte carlo that has a failed instrument panel. the speedometer reads 120 when the car is in park. it can be reset back to 0 if you turn the key off and on numerous times, but it fails again eventually. the car has 57,000 miles on it and is not under warranty any more. this is a serious safety issue. i have talked to chevy and my dealer and they will not help at all with the cost of this repair, which will be approx. $500. i don't think this type of failure should be happening to my 2005 vehicle. *tr
Noticed that speedometer stayed at 70mph when i exited freeway. when i turned off the ignition the needle stayed at 70. on start up the speedometer started at 70mph and went up from there. every car was turned off the was stuck at a higher speed eventually coming back to 0, the speedometer seemed to work correctly for a while then start the cycle again. i tried to use the tach to monitor my speed but it would occasionally be erratic also. *tr
Monte carlo has 33,000 miles and speedometer no longer provides accurate reading. registers 60 mph at standstill position. advised speedometer cluster is shot and i need a new one. appears this is a common problem as mechanic is aware of the problems with the model. why isn't there a forced recall? isn't this a hazard? *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving 80 mph, the speedometer dial moved to zero. an independent mechanic confirmed that the instrument panel failed and needed to be replaced. the failure and current mileages were less than 77,000.
I own a 2005 monte carlo that i bought used 16 months ago. about 4 months ago i noticed the speedometer started sticking when slowing down. now the speedometer only moves forward, continuing to move clockwise all the way around. about two weeks after that, i noticed my gas gauge was not registering correctly and now just remains in a south position. not only that but about two months ago, my turn signals stopped flashing when in use and would not flash again until the car was turned off and back on again. after that they would work for a while but start acting up again after about an hour of driving. now my turn signals stopped working completely which has now affected my hazard lights. of course my warranty expired in november 07 but i think i will be able to get the dealership to pay for it under my mechanical warranty since the car only has 46,000 miles on it. if not i will try to find a way to make the dealership or gm pay for it as this is considered a defective part. not to mention there are a lot of other people having the same exact problem which supports the defective part theory. with that being said, defective parts are the manufacturer?s responsibility and not of the consumer. i still suggest the nhtsa mandate some kind of recall for this because one wrong accident can have devastating consequences. preventable measures are much cheaper as opposed to the alternative. *tr
Speedometer would start reading 20-30 mph less or more than actual speed, then over a period of weeks, would end up showing 120mph, even buried, and stay there. would work itself back to 0 and stay there. then tach started reading wrong. found out many of these vehicles had same problem. had to take to dealership to replace instrument cluster at $560.00. *tr
The speedometer displays the wrong speed. it started with just higher speed and now will display 20-30 mph when traveling on expressway when going 65. sometimes the instrument cluster can be reset by turning off and on the ignition to reset. now even that is not working. i took to dealer today and they want to replace the instrument cluster for over $537 ++. the chevy dealer i bought the car from is no longer in business. this started around 60k miles. *tr
I have 2005 monte carlo ss, the speedometer and the fuel gauge have stopped working. they fail when it is cold out and when it is warm they will some times work, however do i know if they are really working. i have read online where a lot of people with the same car are having the same issue. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo. whenever the contact starts the vehicle, the speedometer will work sporadically. occasionally, the speedometer fails to display the correct speed. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the current mileage was 55,000 and failure mileage was 44,000.
The traction off and abs warning lights came on, as well as a service message stating to service the traction control system. after dealer inspection the noted that one of the hub bearings caused some kind of damage to the wiring/sensors. *tr
Instrument cluster goes erratic. 47k miles. dealer says they get a lot of these and replacement is the only answer. $550. ebay has multiple businesses that repair gm clusters. why is there no recall? chevrolet dealer says new model has improved gauge motors. *tr
The whole dash cluster on my 2005 chevrolet monte carlo does not work. at first the temperature gauge was showing red when my car was perfectly fine, then the speedometer went out (it doesn't even move) followed by the fuel indicator gauge. it hasn't been working for a little over a year now. its hard to tell when i need to fuel my car up, when it may be running hot, or how fast i'm going. *tr
Vehicle ignition randomly turning off engine while in gear from 2006 to sale in nov 2007. trips to dealerships in malden, ma and west babylon, ny advised "too heavy" keyring, but continued to be a problem. electrical failure of entire dashboard including speedometer occurred in january, 2007 and was subsequently repaired by dealership in west babylon ny where i was told keys were too heavy for ignition reporting now due to similar instances in other chevrolet vehicles but noticed monte carlos were not addressed as an issue. *tr
Speedometer cluster. *tr
Odometer - not register correct speeds. sticking on higher speeds and not returning to zero upon stop. could not recognize what speed vehicle was going at. failed instrument cluster, required a new replacement of the instrument cluster. *nm
I have a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo, supercharged ss, [xxx] signature series. the vehicle has active onstar, xm radio, sun roof and the rest of the bells and whistles connected with the vehicle. the problem is with the xm radio and onstar system. the antenna for all the radio systems are located on the rear roof, behind the sun roof. the problem occurs whenever you open the sunroof. the sunroof tilts up and covers the antenna. this causes the xm radio to lose signal. the main purpose of this complain is that the onstar also loses signal. this defeats the safety feature of the onstar system, because if you were in an accident, the onstar emergency personnel would not be notified and this would lead to severe injury and possibly death. i have taken the vehicle to ron anderson chevrolet in fernandina beach, fl. they contacted their gm complaint desk and the reply was "that's just the way it is. close the sunroof part way and that will help reception for the xm radio". there was some type of communication that i have a copy of that indicated the above, but said nothing about the onstar. with the sunroof open, the onstar cellular phone does not work, not i am almost postive that the emergency portion of the onstar is not working either. the vin # is [xxx]. chevrolet's postion indicated to me that they would not do anything to rectify this situation or even that they cared. the safety issue is what really concerns me, because the main reason that i purchased onstar was the fact that you had communications, and if emergency care was needed, it was there. this is an obvious safety issue and general motors, in my opinion, could care less. thanks for listening to me and i look forward to hearing from you or general motors. sincerely. *nm updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
With less than 20k miles on vehicle speedo had to be replaced due to inaccurate reading and failure to reset to 0 at stop. *tr
