Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading of 5 mph. the failure recurred when driving at various speeds. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 35,000.

While driving at night on a major interstate i was suddenly being passed and was nearly rear ended because although my speedometer showed i was doing 65 mph, i was actually going much slower. i realized there was a defect when i exited and while coming to a stop at the red light, my speedometer stayed on 60 mph. since then my tachometer and my gas gauge quit working. the needles point straight down on all three. i called three different dealerships all of which have quoted about $400 to repair the cluster assembly. given that this is a known defective part and has been recalled in a couple of other chevy models, chevy needs to recall the monte carlo and fix this for all mc owners. i bought the car new and the defect first occurred at about 85,000 miles. today i have just under 90,000 miles but rarely drive the vehicle due to the defect. i am also worried about passing state inspection due to this defect that chevy should be held accountable for. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated the speedometer displayed the incorrect speed on the instrument panel while driving on a highway. the dealer and manufacturer were notified, but denied any assistance with repairing the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 120,000. updated 03/05/12*lj

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that all the gauges on the vehicle failed, including the fuel gauge and speedometer. the contact was concerned because he could not determine what speed he was traveling or if there was an internal failure because none of the dashboard warning lights would illuminate. the dealer only advised that the instrument cluster would potentially need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 47,000 and the current mileage was 52,700.

2004 monte carlo spedometer and instrument cluster works erradicle during normal driving conditions and could result in a faster than posted driving expierence. if not trained and tested at high speed manuvers driver and passenger safety is reduced , dramatically !

The speedometer and rpm go crazy can be doing 20 and says im doing 100. *tr

Instrument cluster frequently malfunctions, i.e. speedometer, gas gage, rmp gage, as needs on cluster either "stick" or do not return to their proper position when the car is shut off. gm currently does not have this listed under their recall agreement, neglecting a potentially serious risk of accidents. *tr

Speedometer stopped working properly, leaving me unable to determine the correct speed. i almost ran into the back of another car going slower because i was unaware of the problem until then. it sometimes now don't work at all. *tr

Follow up to odi id#10298010 it would seem that death or injury must result from an equipment failure to warrant action. i was lucky to escape either when, while driving i 80 the speedometer failed for the first time. the speed control was set at 65mph, but when i realized the speedometer was indicating +100mph, i reduced speed rapidly and was very nearly run over by the semi tractor/trailer behind me. gm is aware that components in these instrument panels are defective. please, demand a recall of these vehicles before someone dies. *tr

Erratic speedometer operation which will indicate speeds of over 140mph at times, even when stopped,or lower mph than is actually being traveled. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo ss. the contact stated that the instrument panel clusters have failed. none of the gauges on the instrument panel are moving normally. the speed odometer remained at 20 mph regardless of the speed that the contact is driving. the contact has not taken the vehicle to the dealer or contacted the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 26,038.

The instrument panel goes crazy the speedometer pegs out and you might be going 20mph or it might show you are going 40 and the tac will be on 2000rpm going down the hwy and the heat gauge will go all the way over and the all the other gauges will do that also or they will do nothing. *tr

Speedometer failure on 2004 chevrolet monte carlo: failure started with speedometer reading anywhere from 10-15mph low, causing excessive speed while driving. failure progressed to either reading zero mph or a consistent 20mph during all speeds of driving. failure occurred on vehicle with approximately 45,000 miles on the vehicle. *tr

Electrical system gauges, speedometer froze, gas, oil, and rpm pegged... *tr

This just started right out of the blue. my speedometer works very erratically. sometimes it reads 30mph when im doing 70mph and sometimes it says 30mph when im not even moving. it can also be any combination of any speed. it just does whatever. sometimes it works fine. usually when it starts to go bad it eventually will just drop to below 0mph and stay there. now the tachometer is doing the same thing. both occur totally at random. this could easily lead me to have an accident if i don't know how fast im going. nothing has been done to fix it because i really don't think i could afford to get it fixed and i know nothing about automobile electronics either. the car is a 2004 chevy monte carlo ss with 61,000 miles. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving approximately 45 mph the contact noticed the gauge on the instrument panel cluster was not functioning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated the instrument cluster panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Tachometer is the only gauge left working now on my 2004 monte carlo ss dale earnhardt jr. edition. oil pressure, boost gauge, water temp and fuel gauge all show incorrect readings at various times for the past several months now. yesterday the speedometer refused to show any speed at all. i am now forced to use the car's overhead console computer to show me how much fuel i've used and my garmin gps to tell me what my speed is. this is an unsafe condition to operate a car in. the car has 71,000 miles on it. the original warranty has expired. chevy says the entire instrument cluster needs to be replaced but the cost is prohibitive. the cluster on the dale jr. edition is different from the standard cluster (car # and signature) so it is unlikely that my car will remain original with a replacement cluster. gm needs to replace or fix the gauges only. a simple solution that won't cost a lot of money. there is no need to do an expensive, destructive replacement of the entire cluster. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that the instrument clusters on his vehicle failed without warning. all of the gauge needles on the instrument panel were pointed downward and inoperable. while driving, the contact was unsure of his speed including how fast or slow he was driving. the manufacturer advised him to have an authorized dealer diagnose the failure. the manufacturer also mailed the contact a letter informing him that the warranty is not valid for the repair and that there are no related recalls. the contact is responsible for paying $450 to have the vehicle repaired. the contact filed claim# 71-762-310145 with the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 64,776.

Bad stepper motors in my tachometer, voltmeter and now my engine temperature meter have died or are faulty, producing erroneous readings. the failures seem to be randomly occurring as the motors slowly die out, giving false readings in each gauge until they are permanently stuck in a position. this has occurred to each meter over the last several months, with meters giving incorrect values, sometimes resetting and functioning properly once the engine is turned off and back on, but then becoming incorrect once again. consequences of this could lead to further damage to the car in case an actual problem occurs in areas of the car where monitoring the situation would eb critical, such as in my case when my engine coolant was running very low but i could not tell due to the gauge being broken. serious damage to my car and potentially myself could have occurred. the only available option is to purchase a new dash cluster for several hundred dollars, while the problematic motors cost $5 each to replace but altering the dash is not legal. *tr

I own a 2004 monte carlo ss, whether driving on hwy or city roads i loose all electrical power, ie lights, gauges, radio for about 2 seconds, enough to get your attention and then all comes back on, no interruption in the running of the car, i'm afraid that it may get worse and the car will shut down , i have had this looked at by a dealer service dept and they can not find the trouble and there are no codes stored in the computer, i have 61000 miles on and we like the car, something needs to be done.this has happened at least twice a month for the last six months plus. *tr

2 years ago when i had 12000 miles on my monte carlo ss intimidator my dash gauges started reading wrong information now at 14607 miles the gauges don't work at all except for the oil pressure gauge. i have tried to contact chevy help center 4 times in the past two months and they have not replied to my e-mails for information concerning this wide spread factory installed faulty component. any information odi can give me to resolve this problem will be greatly appreciated. thank you *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving at 15 mph, the contact noticed that the speedometer along with other gauges on the instrument panel were non-functional. the contact called the dealership and was informed that she would be responsible for all repair costs. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000. the current mileage was 50,288.

The inst.panel cluster has stopped working in my 2004 monte carlo,,,hard to drive without a speedometer! *tr

I to have a 2004 monte carlo that the instrument panel gauges have all gone out. it started at 40,000 miles now speedometer, tachometer are no longer functional. this is very dangerous., i contacted general motors they said they haven't gotten any complaints on this issue (this is the same issue they had with the trucks but they covered them. these are the same electronics) they informed me to take it to a dealer where it will cost me about $700.00 to fix. the internet is loaded with customers with this same complaint so i find it hard to believe gm has not heard of it. i guess someone has to die before it will become noticed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that the speedometer dial would begin at 80 mph and would not go back down to 0 mph. he took the vehicle to a dealer and was informed that the entire instrument panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired, but the contact has scheduled an appointment for the repair. he filed a complaint with the manufacturer but was informed that they could not assist. the current mileage was 30,765 and failure mileage was 30,715.

Instrument cluster failure, loss of speedometer and other gauges. *tr

As i put the car in drive as reached about 15 mph the cluster panel started to spin as if it had a mind of it's own. since then i don't know how fast im going. i could be stopped at a light and it says im going 90. i could be in a neighborhood and im going faster then my gauges can read. i have no gas gauge. it reads a different amount any given minute. my car over heated on 12/18/2013 thanks to having a gauge read that my temperatures were fine. but really they weren't. it would be nice to know how fast im going. if my car is about to overheat. if i need gas. long road trips are out of the question. but they shouldn't be i paid for this car. only to have it fail at 26,000 miles. it wasn't covered by bumper to bumper as it took me more than 3 years to get to 26,000 miles. i don't want to be taking a curve too fast and crash my car because im not equipped with mandatory safety equipment to drive. nothing on the cluster panel works. *tr

Instrument cluster/ speedometer malfunction, erratically reads vehicle speed or not at all. all else works well. love my monte but it is annoying to say the least to be as o.c.d about my car as i am and to have this major part of communication between car and driver go bad chevy admits to having an issue with this item, but will do nothing about, unless i fork over $ 600.00 for parts and repair. chevy.... god don't like ugly!*tr

Failure of speedometer other instruments in the cluster appear to be functioning properly. sometimes the speedometer will register properly and the next minute it will say 15 when the speed is actually 55 or above. there is no consistency to this problem as it will malfunction at any time. using the cruise control appears to have no effect on the problem. i am amazed at all of the complaints registered here and there still has been no recall. gm can be reached at 800-222-1020 and a complaint can be filed with them also. i inquired about a recall and i was not asked if i wanted to file a complaint. i had to ask them if i could. every call should count. *tr

Instrument cluster failure. *tr

Speedometer stopped working while driving down the road. *tr

My oil pressure gage went out then my tachometer went out and now the speedometer went out. *tr

Approximately one year ago, i started noticing that my tachometer on my 2004 monte carlo ss was not functioning properly all the time. it is an intermittent problem, and i have since learned to live with it. well now the speedometer started yesterday with a very similar problem. it will only register the highest speed i get to...and stay in that position until the car is almost at a dead stop. if you reduce your speed, you can not tell how fast you are going. i have done a lot of research on line regarding this, and it is apparent that chevy and gm trucks from 03- and 04 are covered by a safety recall for this identical problem. i contacted the local dealership and they stated it was not a known issue with the monte carlos...however internet search can produce cars of all types in that date range that all have had the same failure. this is a 2004 monte carlo ss that just has 36600 miles. and the problem has been apparent since last summer (just a month after it went out of the "date" warranty)... *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that the speedometer in the vehicle suddenly stopped working. the speedometer dial randomly moves up and down regardless of the speed. the speedometer has displayed 60 mph when the vehicle was at a stop sign, as well as 15 mph when the contact was really traveling at least 60 mph. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop and they stated that the instrument cluster panel was the cause of the failure. currently, the dial remains at zero. the contact believes that the manufacturer should be responsible for this defect because she is unable to determine what speed she is traveling. the failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 71,000.

There was nothing wrong with my car until one night and they suddenly i look down and my speedometer says i'm going 110 when i'm only going 30. this happens every day. i will be driving for about 30 minutes and then my speedometer will be reading the wrong thing. my tachometer will be wrong as well. i went to the gm dealer and they said that to fix it would be 350 dollars. while i was there they said that the gm trucks had a recall for they instrument cluster and it is the same one that is in my monte carlo. this is a safety hazard towards anyone who has this type of model instrument cluster. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. the contact stated that the instrument cluster stopped working. the speedometer reads 100 mph when the contact is really driving 30 mph. the failure occurs daily. the dealer stated that the repair would cost $350-400. the failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 69,000.

Purchased '04 monte carlo ss august 2007 (23,713 miles). the instrument panel gauges began getting stuck, going completely around and simply do not work. began at approx 38-39,000 miles. paid over 1,600 for ext warranty and add'l 300 for 'fixing' the problem. still broken and chevy doesn't recall! also heated seats are getting scalding hot. *tr

I have a 2004 monte carlo that has recently had issues with the instrument cluster. the speedometer is erratic, from observing a blog i noticed that this is not an uncommon issue. i am looking for some help with this repair as i understand that the instrument cluster can be rather expensive and since this does not appear to be a unique problem caused by me. i also understand that this repair needs to be made by a dealer, there are 2 local dealers which i have purchased from and would be happy to bring this problem to them, but i would have some issues with the cost of a new instrument panel not so much with the cost of labor. i would like to resolve this issue quickly before i start getting any speeding tickets i also believe this constitutes a safety risk since i can not accurately determine my speed. *tr

Speedometer does not work, it might read 35mph when your are going 55mph, or it might read 99mph when your going 55mph. sometimes it stay at 35 mph when you stop, and starts from there. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving approximately 80 mph on normal road conditions, the instrument panel cluster failed without warning. however, the temperature gauge displayed accurate readings. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 75,000. updated 3/27/09 *cn updated 03/31/09.*jb

Driving down the highway and temp gauge suddenly goes in circles and finally stops below the cold temp , less than where the needle usually is when you first start up the car. does not go back to working, coolant sensor is ok, according to chevy dealer, need whole new cluster instrument panel. *tr

Instrument cluster panel gauges gone bad for my vehicle. the speedometer needle starts at a random point on the gauge and always reads incorrect. when traveling on highways, the needle may turn 180 - 360 degrees around the gauge, making it impossible to determine speed, makes using the cruise control option dangerous, and a higher risk of getting stopped for a speeding ticket. the tachometer gauge works 50% of the time but the other times the needle is in the "red zone" giving the driver a false sense of the transmission shifting. the temp gauge works 90%, but in cold weather it can stay about the halfway line also show a wrong reading of the engine overheating. *tr

I have a 2004 monte carlo ls and about 6 months ago the speedometer would not display the correct speed and now it doesn't work at all. i have dealt with it and paid an issued speeding ticket. today the temperature gauge was reading hot. i immediately panicked and pulled over wondering why my car would be over heating after only 2 miles worth of driving. i sat for about 5 minutes before opening the hood. the vehicle was not hot and had coolant. when i got in to continue my drive i started the engine and the temperature gauge went all the way past hot to the 9 o'clock position where it is now stuck resting against the fuel gauge. im now afraid of driving the vehicle specially if the next gauge goes too. the repair must be done at the dealership and they want 500-1500 dollars. i am a parent of 6 and do not have that money. i have noticed this is such a big issue with this car. i just wish i would have known about it before i bought it. i want to know why there is no recall on this dangerous problem with my vehicle. *tr

My 2004 monte carlo ss is having severe safety issues due to faulty instrument cluster. speedometer reads 110mph even when shut off. coolant temp gauge doesn't work. so going down the highway i have no clue how fast i am going or if the motor is going to blow up due to overheating. turns out gm recalled several 2004-2006 vehicles for the same issue. 2005 monte carlo has the same issue. i have spoke to gm about issue and they said they will not recall the cars or cover any of the repairs. this website here has 47 complaints so far for the same issue. why will they not recall the car and fix this issue? will it take someone getting killed for them to actually do something about this well known problem? gm is aware of the problem with the monte carlo's. they just choose to not fix it and soak the customer for $500 plus to fix the issue. *tr

The gas gauge along with other areas in my dash seem to have a short because it works on and off. *tr

Instrument cluster gauges are not reading correctly. it started with the gas gauge and has now progressed to all gauges in error. have talked to others and looked on the internet and discovered that this is a very common failure. i consider this a hazard since speed and engine condition cannot be determined. i have not taken it to the dealer yet. *tr

2004 chevrolet monte carlo - (approximately 28,000 miles) unable to determine actual speed when driving car: speedometer hangs (does not return to zero) when stopped. subsequent driving continues to increase speed reading. eventually speedometer stays stuck at 140 mph. chevrolet says there is no recall or warranty for this failure. cost to repair $500 to $800. *tr

The speedometer on my 2005 monte carlo fluctuates and will stick at past 140 mph when i am driving along at posted speeds. also, my gas gauge will surpass the full mark when i know i have less than full. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving approximately 65 mph, the speedometer dial moved back and forth inadvertently. the contact continued to drive the vehicle for approximately one year and the failure continued intermittently. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the vin was unknown. the current mileage was 60,700 and failure mileage was 45,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving at any speed, all of the instrument panel indicators fail. there were no warnings prior to the intermittent failures. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the current mileage was 53,392 and failure mileage was 50,000. updated 07/08/08. *bf updated *jb
