The dealer years ago just put an insert into the key. now the ignition does not properly work. you have to wiggle the key for operation. sometimes the car won't start, other times the components won't work unless i wiggle the key. car has 57,000 miles. was part of the original recall for ignition problems.

Takata recall. i spoke to a representative at gm asking about the recall of my vehicle and said my warranty was expired. i just recently bought the car from another person so how i was suppose to know about the cars recall. the problem with the car is the ignition switch whenever i rotate it to turn it on it does not start. i would have to rotate it slowly to the start and as well let it go slowly for it to start. so its not functioning properly. i want to file a complaint to gm for i can get my car fix since it could be caused of my death and the death of other civilians that are near my car whenever it gives up or even worst.

2001 monte carlo ss; i've had many different occasions on where the car just dies while i'm driving it. they had a recall for the "ignition key" i took it in, they "fixed" the key-not the ignition, and still, to this day, the vehicle continues to die while driving, which includes loss of power steering completely. luckily, i have not had a car accident due to this issue, but it's still scary when it happens. it happened again today, 5/29/2015 while driving and completely lost steering control when it died.
Security will not allow car to start or run dealer says bad bcm or wire wants 400 to look. *tr

Intermittent failure of the chevrolet passlock system. the engine starts, but dies in one or two seconds and the "security" light begins flashing - or the engine may not start at all. if i wait 10 to 30 mintues after the first attempt, i can usually get the car restarted but if you do a search online for gm passlock, you'll find numerous websites reporting this issue and suggesting that it may eventually get so bad that the car will not start again. the general motors passlock system is supposed to protect yoru car from theft by preventing the fuel system from engaging, however; this malfunction is happening to owners all across the united states of america. *tr
Upon attempting to start my car, the engine made a loud bang and saw some smoke coming out from the sides of the hood. i then noticed in the reflection of some water on the street and orange glow. i got out of the car, saw fire under the car, and called 911. *tr
I purchased a used 2001 monte carlo ss 3.8l october 2011. the recall #2009047 engine compartment fire notice arrived in august 2012. two spark plug retainers were installed at the dealer september 18, 2012 for no charge. on november 18, 2013, the car was parked for a few hours from 11 am until 2:45 pm, then after driving a short distance (less than 8 miles) on the highway, the car was parked in the lot of a pharmacy. noticeable smoke began to emanate from under the sides of the hood. the hood remained cool to the touch. immediately after the hood was lifted, the entire engine compartment was engulfed in fire. two police officers just happened to be on the scene at the time. they kept us away from the vehicle and prevented us from any attempts to use an extinguisher on the fire. it burned until the firefighters arrived a few minutes later and put it out. the car still looked great with the hood closed. except for a cracked windshield, there was no visible damage to the interior, exterior, or tires. everything in the engine compartment was completely destroyed. the insurance company totaled it out. *tr
I was stopped at a red light at the intersection of 31st street and la grange highway when i noticed smoke coming from under the hood of my car. i pulled into the cit-go gas station thinking my monte carlo was over heating. then, flames began to come from the under the hood. i immediately called 911 and the la grange park police and fire department came within minutes. they had to saw my hood open to put the fire out and i immediately contacted gm. they notified me that my vehicle is in fact a recall and was negligent in sending me the registered vehicle owner any sort of notice of recall. gm is denying fault and refuses to repair the vehicle or grant any sort of responsibility or compensation. although they are responsible for the manufacturer defect they still refuse liability. *tr
I bought the car with no problem then all of a sudden it started with hard starting now it doesn't want to start at all. i brought it to a mechanic and they just pointed at stuff and then blamed the remote start and told me to change my ignition module it didn't fix the problem bought brand new plugs and wires and that didn't fix it then they told me to change the computer and that made no difference. they first told me to change the ignition switch and it cost me 180 dollars then i had to buy a blinker switch witch was also around 190 dollars this is money i don't have. and now im on foot because my car wont start and i need help i have no idea who knows how to work on cars were i live. i need somewhere that they know wiring or something, just help. i have no more money and i just need to have this stupid problem fixed. i also have a problem were the car will die out at a certain speed or when i let off the gas. i almost was hit by another car when this happened. *tr

I have had consistent problems with the abs on this vehicle. i have had it diagnosed at chevrolet dealers and independent dealers in va. i have replaced all wheel hub/bearing assemblies. that is not the problem. the problem is with the abs wheel sensor wiring harnesses. it is obvious if you go online and research this issue there is no way that chevrolet is not aware and the many models of vehicles that are affected. i contacted chevrolet and they have no desire to attempt to help with repairing this safety issue that is well known by dealers, mechanics and consumers. there are currently no tsb's or recalls for this issue. thanks *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. while driving at an unknown speed, the key released from the ignition switch without warning. the contact received a notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the ignition switch and key tumbler needed to be replaced before the recall repairs could be performed. while waiting for the repairs, the ignition switch shorted out and caused the anti-lock and abs system to malfunction. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who confirmed that the ignition switch and key tumbler were defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the recall repairs were not performed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 211,000.
The battery began failing (still had 1 1/2 years left on it). when everything in the car including security failed, by leaning on the passenger side seat i noticed the seat was "burning" hot. i received slight burns to both knees. although black leather is hot in summer, the seat was extremely hot. unplugging the seat began to cool the seat, but had apparently been on long enough to totally drain the battery. it was noted the battery was now sitting in acid which had spilled out of the battery caps. it is obvious the relay switch to the heated front passenger seat went on by itself without the hi/lo switch being on. the battery will now need to be replaced. *tr
2001 chevy monte carlo blinkers doesn't work an when i press the hazardous lights thy start working but recently neither of them work. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo ss. the contact stated that the cluster instrument panel failed by not displaying the correct amount of gasoline, temperature, and the speed on the vehicle. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that he needed to replace the entire instrument cluster. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 132,000.
I was driving on the 105 freeway and the car cut off on me in the fast lane. i pulled the car to the side and tried to start it back up. it wouldn't start at first but after a couple more of times of trying, it started up and i went on home. this car was my moms friend's car and he couldn't drive it anymore do to health problems, so he gave it to me. this shutdown happen to me 3 more times where the car just shutdown while im driving, and then it stated to shutdown while i was at a red light, but it didn't. i asked my moms friend about the car and he told me that he had bought the faulty ignition switch 2 times before, and he still have the papers from the shop where he paid them to fix it. my moms friend told me about the recall so i went to the gm in long beach ca. they gave me a card to call, harbor auto, [xxx]. , (562)426-3341. i called and told her about what was happening to the car and it's on recall for the faulty ignition switch . she told me that the year 2001 is not on recall so she can't help me. i looked at the news report on nbclosgneles.com for gm recalls and this is the same thing that's wrong with my car, the faulty ignition switch. i don't know what to do about this ignition switch because he tried to fix it 2 times already. i have to drive this car to work and back home. now that i know what's wrong with the car, i just shake the key in the ignition and it will start back up. i don't drive on the freeways unless i have too. and when i do, i drive in the slow lane just in case it wants to shutdown on me. please help me get the right part for my car, thank you. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo ss. the contact stated that when at a complete stop, the ignition suddenly locked up; he was able to insert the key but it would not turn. the contact called the dealer about the failure but was told that there were no related recalls and repairs would be at his expense. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were approximately 120,000.
My 2001 chevrolet monte carlo has had a recurring problem where on occasion the vehicle will not start. the key is turned and nothing happens. in order to get the car to start the key must be held in the start position for approximately 30 seconds, then it runs normally. in the past gm told me it was the bcm and i have, to-date, spent over $700 "fixing" the problem without success. i recently began researching on the internet and found that this is a very common problem with 1999 - 2004 gm vehicles but gm has refused to acknowledge a fix via recall (whereas honda reportedly had a similar problem and did issue a recall). i urge the us government to force gm to acknowledge the problem (potentially with their passlock system) and fix our vehicles once and for all! please help! *tr
Turn signal failure. *tr
I'm posting my complaint about a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. there are multiple problems but the two worse are that the turn signals don't work and the car's engine is being disabled by some sort of security malfunction. i'm 19, and don't have money to have this problem corrected. nobody seems to know what's causing the problems. it's very frustrating because the car leaves me stranded, and not having turn signals that work properly is also very frustrating, because it can cause a very bad accident. please someone help! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 monte carlo. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start unless the key was shaken in the ignition. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the head gasket needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 110,597. updated 9/11/14*cn the consumer stated the vehicle should be put on a recall list for faulty ignition. the vehicle should be added to all former recall list that exist or existed for the model. the consumer requested for the vehicle to be repaired and to be reimbursed for what has already been repaired. updated 1/20/2015 *js

While driving my 01 monte carlo, i noticed that my security light came on, and my radio locked up. when i unplug the battery it will reset itself, but it is very inconvenient. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo super sport. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the vehicle was unable to be restarted and was towed to the contact's residence. the dealer stated that the engine and ecm caused the failure. the contact would have to pay over $500 to have the vehicle repaired. the failure has been occurring for approximately four months; however, this was the first time the vehicle ever shut off. the failure and current mileages were 88,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. when the contact started the vehicle, he noticed a warning message indicating service traction system and abs failure. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the technician flashed the computer system to clear the code. the vehicle has not been repaired and the failure persists. the contact researched the failure and was able to determine that the wheel sensor on each wheel, ground, control system, or a faulty wiring harness could be causing the failure. the contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer and notifying the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 140,000 and current mileage was 153,000.
My 2001 monte carlo ss has recently had problems with its security warning light system. the warning light comes on for no apparent reason while driving the car. at the same time the headlights and dashboard lights flash very quickly. one time the car would not start and the car was dead. after opening the trunk with my remote to get the battery jumper cables power returned to the car and i was able to start the car. *tr
Turn signals only work some of the time and make a loud buzzing noise sometimes you can make them work by pushing the four way flashers but it is only a temporary fix.. i believe this is a serious safety issue and there should be a recall for this problem. there is also a clunking noise coming form the steering column/front end. *tr
We have a 2001 chevy monte carlo that had issues with the anti theft, pass lock system. this kept the car from starting at times and sometimes would cause it to die while on the highway.. it started happening more frequently until it finally quit working all together. the bcm and the pass lock sensor had to be replaced. i have asked for the old parts. i have recently found out that there are numerous gm vehicles with the same issues and there has been no recalls. i consider this a potential safety hazard and gm needs to look into it a little further.. *tr
My automatic door locks don't work, randomly when i am driving the car will just act like it can't shift but still drives and d's order it when slowing down to. *tr updated 2/2/2015 *js
My gauges are going dead in my 2001 chevy monte carlo. i have been to several dealerships and they say "they fix it" but 2 days later... same problem. all of the gauges in the dash go dead. all of the warning lights flash. *tr
Gas gauge becomes erratic (fluctuates) when gas gauge reading gets to approximately 1/4 tank position. *tr
Started with check engine light then the rpm gauge stopped now my fuel gauge stopped had the car checked out and it is a bad cluster. *tr
Turn signals sometimes do not work. hazard lights do not stay on . constantly shut right off. driving at times can be dangerous when you put on the turn signal and it doesn't work. *jb
Traffic signals constantly fail to work, used to be able to push hazard light button and they would come back on, now hazard lights won't work either. have almost had 4 accidents because blinkers failed to work, have almost been cited by the local police until i proved it was a mechanical failure. can't afford the cost of repair, because i had to pay out of my pocket for catalytic converter replacement when it failed, though it was a manufacturer defect, because gmc and dealer wouldn't make it good, and the engine shut down completely. *nm
Stop & go driving. abs warning light comes on, traction control turns off, service traction control warning light comes on, brake pedal vibrates. all lights stay on while driving but reset after ignition turn off/ turn on procedure as described in owners manual. next day, same lights & warnings. take vehicle to dealer on 4/05/06. "computer checked system codes p1189, p0135, c1216 in system. items tested per trouble tree. all items test good." no charge. next day, 4/6/06, same warnings! take to dealer again without resetting warnings. no computer system codes showing, but no input signal from right front hub. dealer replaces right front hub assembly - cost $479. vehicle seems fine, until about 4/20 when brake pedal vibration comes back and warning lights come on and off. i turned off the traction control system and everything was fine for several days. on 4/25, with the traction system off, the pedal vibration was back and the abs & traction control warning lights came on again. went back to dealer. although they told me the computer check show codes of c1222 and c1226, the codes do not show on my invoice. code c1226 appears on nhtsa technical service bulletin item number 10017271 for my year and make of vehicle. however the service bulletin number 3500 is not know to the dealer as a valid tsb number, and they could not locate any information about it. dealer "diagnosed and replaced ebtcm, and programmed system" - cost $697. i feel that by replacing the "brain" (ebtcm) and programming it, the dealer and/or the manufacturer may be covering up a potential safety issue with either one or both systems, abs and traction control. i also feel that the dealer put me and my family in a dangerous position by failing to diagnosis any problems on the first visit, and then doing it again by making me feel safe by paying for a replacement part that has nothing to do with either system! *nm
Security light, service vehicle soon light, battery light and airbag light all flash. the radio will "lock" and will not play. the car seems to run fine but the lights flash constantly. i was told there was no recall on this model, but yet it sounds just like the other recalls on monte carlos. my dealership wants $80.00 just to look at it. there is a real problem with the diagnostic system and i am afraid my air back won't work if needed. *nm
Dt: the contact stated the automatic headlights will shut off while driving. when he manually turned on the headlights they will stay on. the vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the problem. he believed it may have been a problem in the electrical system relay for the headlights. *ak updated 12/27/05. *jb
