I was at a friends for several hours proceeding incident. i drove my 1999 chevy monte carlo z34 about 1 mile from my friends to taco bell. the car had been running great. i went inside to order i was in their 10-15 minutes. when i came out smoke was coming from under the hood. i opened the hood and the top of the engine was on fire. taco bell employees called 911 and then provided a fire extinguisher. the fire was put out by the extinguisher and they cancelled the 911 call. i called a tow company and had the car towed home due to the hour and my engine being melted. *tr

Brake pads need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months. rotors were cut and then new rotors replaced. i live in a rural area not bumper-to-bumper, city traffic. i also do not ride my brakes. there seems to be a major defect in the monte carlo brake system. i just had to have a new alternator replaced on my 1999 monte carlo. i am very unsatisfied and will definitely not buy another gm product. *jb

Left front wheel hub assembly failure, tie rod end & elec sensors on lh axle that help operate abs (wheel speed sensors), torque converter slippage.: left front tire was not secure and wobbled during driving due to faulty hub assembly; abs wheel speed sensor cracked causing abs not to work properly; transmission slips out of overdrive under normal highway driving speeds when gearshift is in the "od" position; car starts off in what appears to be too high of a gear making it very sluggish to move-danger to pull into traffic with this. local gm dealer mechanic stated he has reported the faulty wheel speed sensor problem to gm because many vehicles of this same model have had same problem for which the abs control module had been replaced in error not solving the problem-vehicle makes "clicking" sound when applying brakes and causes headlights to dim and flash making it appear that i am trying to "flash" another vehicle with my headlights-this could prove to be extrememly unsafe especially if someone has the belief that my flashing headlights are giving them an ok to make a turn or other maneuver, when in fact i am not.*ak

Consumer stated the front wheel bearing was replaced. *jg

I have a 1999 monte carlo that was purchased in mid 1999. ever since i purchased it and it rains, the wipers freeze in the middle of my windshield. this makes it very difficult to drive when it really rains or even night time rainy weather. over the past year or so, now it even does it when it snowed out. this has happened well over 10 times in the past 4 years that i have owned this vehicle. i have taken it in to several chevy dealerships and they all say the same thing "nothing seems to be wrong here. just keep an eye on it and let us know if we can help you with anything else..." i feel that they just don't want to look at my car, seeing that i am female. i get this impression because they only took about 5 minutes to look at it and came to that conclusion. is there anything that i can do, seeing now that my car is way out of warranty. *ak
