Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

When driving the vehicle first the engine light came on and i got a diagnostics it was the mass air flow sensor code coming up. i had the thotle cleaned.... the engine light went off 2 daya later. then i was driving on the hwy and the engine light came on along with the message engine reduce power. i pulled over shut the car off for 10 seconds , start it again and drive it. it does it on a daily now. and im tired of it this is a brand new car. i got it at 28,000 miles it is now at 53,000 miles. chevrolet know that this problem is going on with many of the mailibus they need to fix it. i just spent 1,100 on this car for the repairs

I was driving on the highway, speed limit was 70mph i was going that speed then out of nowhere i got the check engine light and a notice on my dash appeared as 'engine power reduced' and my speed drastically declined i was almost rear ended by a semi truck, i had people in the back of my car and with an impact from a trailer we could have been seriously hurt or even killed. this a reoccurring proble with malibu's from the year 2016-2019 gm knows about the issue but has done nothing to resolve it. this issue not only puts the driver of the vehicle in harm but others around as well. the problem is the throttle body response sensor which is about a $300-$500 fix which is not an cheap fix. they need to be held responsible for this because one day this could happen to anybody with this type of car and it can kill someone.

My 2016 chevy malibu completely lost power twice on 2/6/2020. the engine shut completely down. the first incident happened while waiting in the pick up line at my daughters school which is in a parking lot full of kids. the car just shut completely down while in drive. it actually died. no instrument panel on, no radio on, no heat. i had to put the car in park and then push the pedal along with the push to start button to restart the car. the second incident happened about 15 to 20 minutes later while i was stopped at a traffic light. once again the car was in drive and just completely shut down. the same thing happened as the first incident but this time i am in heavy traffic during the time when kid's are released from school and people in general are moving around the city. all of this happened during a heavy snow here in my state. for a person driving up behind me i'm sitting there with no lights on at a now green traffic light in unsafe weather conditions. vehicles were blowing and going around us to avoid an accident. i had to act fast for our safety along with the other drivers on the road. my daughter and myself were scared of being in an accident. i have an appointment tomorrow 2/7/2020 at a general motors dealership to look into the problem.

Passenger side head light went out while driving then came back on a couple of weeks later. two weeks later driver side light went out. two weeks after that both lights went out while driving even highbeams not functional while driving. all lights not functional at the moment.

While driving, the car suddenly flashed the "reduced engine speed" message, and the engine warning light came on. the vehicle would not exceed 20 mph after the message came on. the earliest dealership appointment was for 1/20/20 in a city approximately 30 minutes away; i called the chevrolet warranty line and was advised to try calling other dealerships and take my vehicle to be serviced there, despite my repeated explanations of the safety risk due to the engine failure. i received my car back today (1/22/20) and was told the accelerator wiring was replaced under a "special" warranty extension and that they are not providing the warranty rental car coverage.

The accelerator pedal censor is faulty and causes the vehicle to start to power down. this common in many chevrolet models from the impala, to the malibu and cruze.

Press on the gas and the car slows down to an almost stop position. while driving on a street or on the freeway, the car decides it wants to shut down. all electrical regarding the front and back cameras have gone black.

My wife was driving on the highway when suddenly a message come on the dash stating reduced engine power then the check engine light. our 2016 malibu currently has 62510 miles and upon researching i have found it to be linked to the accelerator pedal position sensor. i have found many complaints online, and one persons lawsuit

While driving down the road vehicle shuts down with a notification saying engine power reduced to where you have to pull off the side of the road and shut the car off three or four times before it will get back to where it's supposed to be. very unsafe when it shuts down going down the highway at 55 and it slows you down to under 20 you have to pull off weaving in and out of traffic very dangerous.

When the vehicle is in "park", turning off the engine a "shift to park" message is displayed. the engine turns off, all other electrical items remain on. repeated restarts are required to eliminate the "shift to park" message. november 6 2019 the "dealer did not have the parts required to correct the problem.10

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel failed. while the vehicle was at a complete stop, "action required steering assist reduced" appeared on the instrument panel and the steering jerked. the engine shut off, but then restarted independently. the contact stated that the failure was experienced several times. the vehicle was taken to covina chevrolet (635 south citrus avenue, covina, ca 91723, (626)-732-1100) where it was diagnosed that there was a short in the electrical system. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 35,000.

When at a stp light, and press excelerator the total electrical system h will go out & car hesitate to move. then, it will kick on. also, this throws my sirus radio out completely & i have to cut the car off completely to get station back on or call for a refresh, but local stations will remain. now i get a waring about the steering ability-drive carefull.

Adaptive cruise control which controls vehicle speed to ensure safe distance stopped working rendering cruise control inoperable. this also caused the forward crash avoidance to not work. vehicle trouble code uo269-00 stored which resulted in replacing long range radar module to correct for $1055.00

For the past two years my vehicle has been to the dealership 6 times for the same issue. on multiple occasions the car while traveling both on the highway and in the city the check engine light comes one and it goes into reduced power mode. on the highway this can be a huge issue. after multiple 'fixes' it's seems to be ok. however on 10/3/2019 while sitting at a red light the auto stop feature kicked on. nothing new there however when i took my foot off the brake the car completely stalled and the doors all unlocked. after about 10 seconds it started back up again. now the auto stop doesn't kick on at all and the car will not let me use auxiliary power. the car is only 3 years old and shouldn't have this many issues. when i take it to the dealer they put it on the computer and say nothing is wrong. what is it going to take for gm to fix this issue in these malibu's? is someone going to have to be injured?

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the reduce power in the engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle gradually began to lose power. the contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle; however, the vehicle would not travel over 60 mph. the contact also stated that the brakes failed while approaching a stop light. while depressing the brake pedal, the brakes failed to respond in a timely matter. the contact took the vehicle to all american chevrolet of killeen (1802 e central texas expy, killeen, tx 76541, 254-213-5397) where it was diagnosed that the brake booster and vacuum pump were defective and the battery was overcharged. the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 16v521000 (hybrid propulsion system) and 16v272000 (electronic stability control). the contact was informed by the dealer that due to the bumper to bumper warranty, a recall repair could not be performed on the vehicle. the vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 71,493.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 65 mph, the service engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. additionally, while the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light, the automatic shut off feature activated. when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to respond. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent, but was more frequent in warmer temperatures and when the air conditioning was in operation. the vehicle was taken to white allen chevrolet (442 n main st, dayton, oh 45405, (937) 303-5147) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to reproduce the failure or retrieve a fault code. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet malibu. while the contact was exiting the parked vehicle, 'additional action required, place vehicle in park' appeared on the instrument panel. in addition, the contact was unable to set the vehicle alarm and the headlights had to be turned off manually. genesis chevrolet (21800 gratiot ave, eastpointe, mi 48021, (586) 804-7977) was informed of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: [xxx]. the approximate failure mileage was 13,000. *js

This issue happens at random times. when i crank up, when i'm at a traffic light, or even just at a stop sign, sometimes my car will turn completely off. it will crank back up, sometimes, but sometimes it takes quite a few times. also, again as i crank up. it goes back to off. instead of going to auto stop, it will cut completely off too. i have no engine light or any other lights that come on to alert me that something is wrong but it happens randomly and has been happening more frequently and it is concerning. also, it feels like the car is kicking or firing back now when i am driving. this is random also.

I park, place the shifter into park and turn the car off but a message appears on the gauge cluster screen saying shift into park. the engine is off but the lights and radio stay on. the shifter is locked and will not move. the same screen shows that the car is in park before i shut the car off, i can feel the transmission shifting too. i have to turn the car back on and run through the gears and back off several times to make it shut off. seems to happen more often on shorter trips. i went to the dealer they have a part on order seems to be a known issue but i'm just out of warranty. i have had the car for 2.5 years just over 35k miles and it just started.

Since i bought this car new in 2016 i have had to replace the vcm 4 times. nothing seemed to fix the problem. the stop/start never worked right. three times over the last month, after various repairs at the dealership, the car has completely stopped while driving and would not start again. the doors unlocked and locked, vehicle jumped 3 times, all kinds of warning lights and messages on the dash....then nothing but a dead car in the middle of the road on a sunny dry day. i could've been the cause of accidents while stopped in the roadway and many people could've been seriously injured. the car was fixed the fourth time yesterday and the mechanic took it out to test before returning the vehicle to me. it died on him again and had to be towed back to the service center. serious safety hazard and the certified gm techs can't figure out what's wrong. p3055 and p3056 are the error codes that come up every time. new battery, new vcm, new wiring harness....each time the problem got worse until it completely stopped running. no recall and the car is out of warranty so chevy is not willing to help at all.

On june 30, 2019, i was driving my chevrolet malibu hybrid home on the freeway when suddenly the engine lost power and stalled. the service engine soon light turned on and a message on the dashboard said 'shift to park'. i coasted to the next exit and stopped on the side of a street. i pressed the off button and shifted to park. i tried to turn on the car and it wouldn't even crank the engine. i called aaa and after 10 to 15 minutes the service engine soon light turned off. i tried again to start the car and it turned on. i canceled aaa and drove the car home. after a couple of days, i decided to scan the trouble codes in the car with my code scanner. the report said four confirmed trouble codes, no permanent trouble codes, no pending trouble codes, no body control module trouble codes, 1 telematics trouble codes, no human machine interface module trouble codes, and four electronic brake control module trouble codes. i saved the report and reset the trouble codes. copy of the report attached. then on july 2, 2019, i was driving on the city street and the car stalled again with the same message to shift to park. i coasted to the side of the road and pressed the off button and shifted to park. i tried to start the car and it did start and i drove it home. next day i scanned the trouble codes again. the report said no confirmed trouble codes, no permanent trouble codes, no pending trouble codes, 2 body control module trouble codes, 3 front camera active safety trouble codes, 3 transfer case control module trouble codes, and 1 electronic brake control module trouble codes. i saved the report, copy attached. next day i took the car to the dealer for trouble shooting, and repair under warranty.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet malibu. while driving 65 mph, the stability control and steering assist reduced warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle then shut down completely. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Upon stopping and shifting the transmission into park, the instrument display gives a "shift to park" warning and when the "stop / start" button is pushed to shut off the engine, the engine stops, but the electrical system remains energized. the problem is intermittent and it often takes several attempts to remedy by re-starting the engine, shifting into gear, shifting back to park, then hitting the "stop / start" button again before it works correctly. based on feedback from this and other sites, this appears to be a common problem and my local dealer has quoted me approximately $500 to replace the transmission control assembly. gm has also issued a technical service bulletin, no. 18-na-297, which recognizes this problem. the car has 27,000 miles on it and is 3 months out of warranty. this is unacceptable from a 100 year old car company that the government bailed out just 10 years ago.

Vehicle was parked on an inclined driveway. the car was rained on for 2 constitutive days. the 3rd brake light assembly just above the rear leaked into the roof of the care and the trunk. the leak was extremely fast and caused a pool about 1/2 an inch deep to build up in the spare tire storage compartment of the trunk. the leak caused damage to the roof panel on the interior of the car with significant water marks, and completely soaked the trunk as mentioned before with the pool of water. the car was purchase new and has never been involved in any motor vehicle accident or collision of any type. the technician that repaired the leak showed the leak was caused by a loose nut on the 3rd brake light assembly just above the rear window. i have attached the invoice from the repair shop that fixed the leak. the manufacturer refused to service or investigate the source of the leak because the vehicle was out of warranty due to mileage. the care was stationary and parked under a rainstorm when the damages were noticed. as far as i can tell there is no electrical damage however the proximity to the 3rd brake light warrants the report of electrical damage. body damage is due to water damage to the floor mats of the trunk, headrest in the passenger area of the car, and water damage to the roof of the vehicle. the damage was found on saturday july 6th, 2019. the repairs were performed on tuesday july 9th, 2019.

My 2016 malibu has intermittently not turned off when hitting the stop button and the error message "shift to park" was coming up. the car was in park. i am able to take my foot off the brake with no movement of the vehicle. this has increased to where i have to turn the car on and off multiple times and eventually it allows the car to turn off. when i called the dealership to explain the situation they informed me that the shifter was bad. he stated that he knew that was the problem because it was the 8th one they had replaced over the past couple of weeks. i do not live in a large metro area so 8 is a pretty high number for the population. i researched online and noticed that multiple complaints for the 2016-2017 malibu and volts over the same issue.

While on vacation road trip to several northwestern states, while turning around in a parking lot, about to exit, car completely shuts off - no warning lights or nothing, just shuts off, looked under hood, nothing unusual, waited about five minutes, car started with stiil no warning lights . we were able to make it back to texas with no other problems. checked internet and there were no recalls - however there were several other occurrences of this happening to other malibus. upon return home phoned my dealership and made them aware of what happened, they informed me that they were not aware of anything like this happening, they encouraged me to file this complaint because there was nothing they could do at this time due to they have nothing stating this has happened.

The car shuts off in traffic. i can be at a stop light and the car just shuts off. all the lights in car flash and vehicle just shuts off. the engine light stays on in vehicle. this has been happening everyday for about a month now.

I own a 2016 chevy malibu and one of its features is an auto stop/start feature in the car. when this car enters this mode when i take my foot off of the break it is supposed to start again but when i take my foot off of the break it will just completely shut down, when i try to start the car again it will just stall. i was involved in an accident on june 9th 2019 where the car cut off and rolled back into another vehicle. this is just one occasion of the car cutting off on me and becoming immobile. i was told it was a battery issue and a wiring issue i've gotten both addressed but it still happens. i've received a letter from chevy that may address the issue but i have to see. my car currently won't start. today is september 24,2019

While driving on highway my "stabilitrak" light flashed on and i was unable to accelerate. i pulled over and while breaking the car was hopping. turned the car off and back on and various lights came on (stabilitrak, check engine, traction control and steering assist). i attempted to start driving again and the car would not accelerate appropriately. had it towed to dealership who couldn't find anything wrong with it because all the alerts had turned off.

Car completely turned off at a red light and had no power. steering locks up and had to push car have towed& then it started right up after. this is happening to many people and it stops even when the car is driving. this is a safety issue

While driving in the highway the car slowed abrubtly, the engine light came on, and the dash gave out engine power reduced. this has happened on more than one occasion while i was driving at a high speed. i pulled over and turned off the car to reset it. the first time the light went off on its own the second and therafter it did not. had the accelerator pedal replaced once and 7 months later it is doing the same exact thing. this is very dangerous for me as a driver and those around me!

Takata recall, check engine light comes on and a reduce power indicator said reduce engine power, the car goes from 70mph to 40 mph on the interstate putting you and your family in grave danger

While parking the vehicle and placing the shifter to park the car gives an error message "shift to park" after turning off the engine. headlights will not turn off and i imagine other electrical systems still run during this error. since the message never went away while i was at a non-gm auto repair shop in for routine oil change and brake check, they needed to replace the transmission control unit so that the car could turn off completely. they also found a tsb (attached) on this issue that informed them on how to fix the "shift to park" error. since the repair was not at a gm dealer the cost was out of pocket. have contacted gm and so far they are saying since there is no recall there is nothing they can do in terms of reimbursement.

While driving, engine loses power and the car shuts down. (this happens in traffic!)

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the transmission and radio continued to activate after the vehicle was turned off. the failure occurred frequently. also, the key fob was faulty and would work intermittently. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to findlay chevrolet (6800 s torrey pines dr, las vegas, nv 89118, (702) 982-4000) where it was diagnosed that a new gear shift and gear shift assembly were needed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and did not assist. the failure mileage was 10,011.

Takata recall" my car has a ploblems with the shift parking, ones i put in parking and turn off the car the car said shift parking and the key stay open. and i can't lock the car, this is the second time that happen to my car i change in 10/2017 that's imposible that happen again.

Throttle position sensor has gone bad on my 2016 malibu it has to be a known problem because there are thousands of videos of people showing how to fix the problem and installing a new tps and pedal.

At cruising speed on the freeway, approximately 65 mph, the car jerked and lost a significant amount of power. the check engine light illuminated and the warning "engine power is reduced" displayed on the information panel. the car continued to lose a significant amount of power until i was able to get out of a separated toll lane and to the breakdown lane. after restarting the car, it was able to again gain power. over several days, the car would go in and out of this mode and the check engine light went off and on multiple times, it again lost power on the freeway, lost significant power while driving up hills (dropping from a speed of 55 mph to below 20 mph within a minute). cars behind my car had to move out from behind me and i had to pull in to the breakdown lane on several occasions to let other cars pass me as i was unable to maintain a legal speed. this problem was assessed by quirk chevrolet and determined to be caused by the throttle position sensor in the gas pedal and the engine control module. quirk identified that these components are not covered under the powertrain warranty (despite the fact that they are necessary components in the powertrain) and that the total cost to replace these would be approximately $520 plus the cost of a rental car. they also were not able to locate an available gas pedal/throttle position sensor assembly by the end of the business day and were unable to identify a timeframe for the length of time this would take to complete because of this missing part. they also identified that they would not be able to reset the ecm until this sensor assembly was completed.

I'll be driving approximate 40 miles and car system will come up stating " engine is going to reduce speed" or something like that ? it's been going for at least two weeks or more now .

Takata recall, when my vehicle stops at a light and the auto stop goes in place as soon as i let off the gas to continue driving my check engine light came on and my radio and my dash lights all went out after a minute of driving again they all came back on

Egine power reduced light. the car wont go over 20-30mph. brakes malfunction causing a small fender bender. its hard to start wont stay running. it even lost power on the hwy a few times before the wreck.

I was traveling on a highway, going around 70 mph, as i was about to merge onto another freeway, my check engine light came on, and a notification came on that said reduced engine power. my car then dropped speed to about 40 mph. i was unable to accelerate the rest of my route to work. i topped at 20 mph. i checked my code reader and p2138 came up.

I was driving on the highway, going 74, all the lights on the dashboard went on (regular lights, warning lights, everything) it lasted about 5-10 seconds and then went back to normal. drove another two miles regaining speed to 74 and headlights wentout, all lights in the inside (dashboard, radio, climate control), and i had no power and quickly dropped speed. the car completely shut down while i was driving on the highway, in 5:00 rush hour traffic. i was able to pull over to the side of the road and i turned the key off. i waited a couple minutes and the car did startup and i was able to get off the highway. i took the back way home so i wouldn't be on the highway. i called the car dealership and brought it in the next day. they said they have not heard of this and have not been able to recreate the issue and diagnostics didn't show anything. i have seen a few other post on the internet with this happening on other malibu cars. the dealership is allowing us to "exchange" (for a fee) to get a different car since we just purchased this one a month ago. hope it doesn't happen again to somebody else with this car.

Driving down major highway, cel came on, vehicle went into reduced engine power mode. scanned cel and found code for app sensor failure. brought to chevy dealer near where car broke down and they said they would charge me to diagnose it and then charge for parts and labor. the only issue being is that the gas pedal and sensor are on a national backorder. which means that since this is not a warranty issue with the thousand of gm vehicles affected by this issue i would have to pay for the repairs and the cost of the rental car through the dealer. there is no eta on when the part will be in (if ever) since gm has not been producing these parts for aftermarket repairs. this issue started on 12/21/18 and the dealer said it may take up to two weeks or longer to get the part, the part has still not been issued to the dealer which has several cars with this issue. i have owned several gm vehicles, my grandfather worked for gm, and i service many heavy duty gm engines through my job, but this will be the last gm vehicle i believe i will be purchasing. the quality of gm is gone immensely down and they are not worth the headache of owning one anymore.

For the past couple of weeks when my auto stop is engage the car turns completely off and stalls while stopped at a light i don't know what to do about this situation i think it's a car defect in multiple people have been stating they have been having the same issue with their same style of vehicle with the same issue

The car is stopped and engine turned off handle does not allow exit from car exterior - cannot lock/unlock the doors from the door sensor or from the fob interior - cannot lock/unlock the passenger doors with the door sensor or fob upon entering vehicle random alarm ' as if vehicle is being stolen car will ding that the remote is still in the car while i'm still in the car. attached is a letter i sent to chevy to tell them how unsafe this is in every situation. the car has been at the dealership with no answer in how to fix the problem since 11/20/18. the car has been in the shop 48 of the last 54 days with the past 37 days consecutive chevy offered me a rebate on a new car but refused to buy the car back. the car is a danger and is not road ready for anyone. i am having a difficult time uploading documents, please let me know if i need to send separately through email.

I've had problems with the off and on ignition push button since last year. i have to push and start several time in order to cut off to lock my doors and turn the radio off. my brakes locked on me while driving on the street and smelled like rubber where burning. i had the vehicle towed. i was told nothing is wrong and had to get my vehicle and park it.

Alternator bearing is going bad. i have not replaced it yet the car is only two years old alternator should last at least seven years. i also had a new engine put in a few months ago because of the piston cracked. so many issues with the new engine in the 2016 chevy malibu model

When going to start the vehicle with foot on the brake pedal and push start button it makes a click sound and shows a check engine light as well as stability control message appears in the dash. it's not an issue of a dead battery or faulty starter. it happens once or twice a day. when i come back about a hr later i again apply the brake pedal and push the start button and after a few tries of it reading the same check engine stability control message it starts up. along with this happening when i'm driving and come to a stop at a stop sign or traffic light, the auto stop engages as it should only the vehicle completely dies. but when i let off the brake it doesnt start back up as normal. only to have to put it in park and apply the brake and hope it starts back up. after reading into this on various forums this seems to be a common recurring issue. only no answers as to why or what causes this problem.

2016 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regard to receiving reimbursement and repairs for vehicle. *as the consumer stated the a humming noise could be heard from the headliner module and engine. the engine mount collapsed. the right front axle needed to be replaced.*js
