We have classified the 145 complaints from 2013 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
I have a 2013 malibu lt with 52,000 miles on it. last month on the 20th of november service power steering warning started to flash on the information system. when that happens my doors would lock and my car would stall. however; unlike most other consumers who are having this problem my steering wheel didn't get tight and i did not lose control of my car. i could not do more than 40mph and sometimes if i hit a bump in the road service power steering would come on and the doors would lock and the car would stall and then go back to normal. i took my car in to genesis chevrolet to see what the problem was. they had my car for about a good 4 to 5 hours. they then came and informed me that they could not find anything wrong with my care because, no codes where popping up and the mechanic tried 4 times but could not duplicate the situation i was having. it is now december 11th and i am still having the same problem. i just drove to work today and went to make a right turn down the street leading to my job the service power steering flashed again ,the car stalled ,and the engine light came on. this time the car slowed all the way down until it came to a complete stop. even though my car had come to a complete stop it was still on and running. my radio still worked my heat was still on and i still could shift my gear shift. i put the car in park turned it off for about a minute and then started it back up. when i started it back up the engine light had gone off and i was able to accelerate my car and pull into the parking lot of my job. *tr
This happened two days in a row i was driving me so me turning a corner and my car just stopped steer wheel locked up could move the car or nothing near had an accident i'm a petrified because i don't know when this god happens again i vaule my life this recall seriously needs to be looked into i worked hard many long days to save to get this car just for it to turn out bad i seriously need help with this life threatening issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel seized and the entire instrument panel warning indicator illuminated. the contact mentioned that the vehicle jerked while the failure occurred. an independent mechanic was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle would not be able to be diagnosed unless the failure occurred in their presence. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 147,000.
19 august 2019 on this day twice i experience loss of power on the vehicle and power steering. luckily i did not hit any cars. was driving below 35 mph the first incident is when i came to a red light the radio turn off first then the car felt sluggish and the engine shut down lost control of everything and was coasting. vehicle gain power by it self and resume operations. during every light i stop it felt like it wanted to lose power. came to a parking lot driving around 5 mph completely the car shut off first radio and then whole vehicle this time it did not gain power by it self. had to place the vehicle in park turn the key off and restart it was able to park it. after reading here seems a lot of people are having this issue an immediate investigation should be open because this can possibly happen in the highway if i lose control power in the power steering i could potentially crash of get hit by a car . call gm and they said they do not have a bulletin ask them for an address to submit a formal complaint and was given one. i don't think gm cares hopefully you guys can look into the issue and get and answer as to why is happening consumers should not have to pay a diagnostic fee and not get answers
Coming home from work on 8/6/2019 traveling down md-210 highway, with car motion, the radio cut off and then entire car shut off. we stopped at a red light, so my husband took the key out of the ignition restarted the car and we traveled home. this is not the first time, we had our car checked at our mechanic's shop but at the time he could not determine what the issue could be and could not duplicate the issue. this is not the first time, the radio cuts off, instrument dash lights, cuts off and the the power steering shuts down just for a couple of seconds, it happened when we traveled to work, my husband turned the steering wheel right to get on the highway, the radio went off for a few seconds then it came back home. this is very dangerous and god forbid if this happens while car in motion on a green light it could kill someone. please recall this vehicle asap.
A few times that i have been driving my car, i have experienced issues with the car turning off and losing power steering and control while in motion. the whole car turn off and wheel locks up, preventing me from being able to control the car. countless searching through forums led me to find many people who have experienced the same issue. and from the forums, many claim the reason for these problems happening is faulty battery cables that gm that doesn't want to admit. this is a safety issue because i have had my car turn off while driving on the highway and in the city. and i'm not the only experiencing this issue. it's widespread among 2013 chevrolet malibu's. here is a link to one of many forums taking about this issue: https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t33502_ds916791
Car shuts off completely while driving. electrical system is sporadic then shuts down.
Sometimes it happens when i turn on my blinker others its random but the car stalls and the radio turns off along with the power steering.
Takata recall the lights on my dash kept going in and out while i was driving and while stationary. while my car was off, with no key in the ignition, the gauges would make clicking sounds and bounce up and down about an 8th of an inch. the lights on the dash would stay off for days at a time, making it impossible for me to see how fast i was going or how much gas was in the car. sometimes the lights would click on for about 30 seconds and then the speedometer would be stuck at the last speed i was going at, for days, without showing anything on the digital speedometer. when i took it to get looked at, no codes were found. my car kept dying while i was driving, went and had my battery and alternator tested and they were 100% fine. car dash lights started flashing on and off while i was going around a curve. check engine, oil, wiper fluid, gas light, everything flashed on and off, then my steering locked up, causing me to go off of the road and hit a tree. my car was totaled.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving 40 mph on the freeway, the steering seized and the vehicle lost power without warning. the contact managed to veer the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. the vehicle failed to restart and the key would not release from the ignition. approximately two hours later, the vehicle did not resume normal operation. the failure recurred multiple times. the manufacturer and dealer were made aware of the failure. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 13v173000 (electrical system). the failure mileage was approximately 66,000.*pm the vehicle was towed to do the dealer and consumer was told it was not electrical problem but block cable was replaced.*jb
When driving my malibu it seems to have a short circuit when i turn the wheel even the slightest. i have changed the batteries checked all the wires and everything seems fine. i have figured out even when i'm driving 70mph on the highway with my family in the car the power steering will go out and make it hard for me to even turn. i have read online that this is happening to malibu's everywhere and that gm is not willing to make it a national recall because it must be happening while they see the car. so i guess i have to wait for me to crash? to see that the power steering gave out on me along with the rest of the electrical work on the inside of the car.
The entire electrical system will randomly shut down causing loss of power steering, power brakes, entire dashboard, all lights, hazard lights etc. this can happen at any time, on the freeway, stopped at a light, parked etc. sometimes it goes dark and restarts itself while driving....sometimes it goes dark and won't restart for minutes or longer while in traffic without working hazard lights. if parked, it can't be taken out of 'park" to push it out of traffic or try to start it in "neutral" and the key can't be removed from the ignition.there are no error codes to diagnose the issue and it won't ever happen while it is in the shop (of course) this is the ultimate safety hazard to me and my family.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the radio screen suddenly shut off and the electric power steering failed. as a result, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who indicated that the battery was faulty and needed to be replaced. the battery was replaced, but the failures continued. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified. the failure mileage was 92,000.
Less than 99,000 miles... radio light flickers off and on. vehicle goes dead at red light, stop sign or whenever vehicle is not in motion. took vehicle to dealership and replaced the engine computer module as requested. however, problem still exist but more worse. 'service power steering' light came on while driving on a city street but before i could make a safe turn, it became too tough to steer almost causing an accident. battery good, alternator good..no one really knows what's wrong with the vehicle.
13 malibu every day at least twice the radio will flicker off and on multiple times and then once i hit the brakes and make a turn the brake will go solid and the steering wheel jerks hard all at the same time and then all my dash lights stop working. then it will all power on and work like new a few seconds after. but once the car is parked and car is turned off it will not allow me to take the key out. and then once you try to turn the key in there is no power at all. no lights. no clicks. no radio. no nothing. completely dead car. but then if you unplug the battery for 10 mins and plug it back in... then the key will come out and/or will turn on and the car is working fine again for maybe a trip or two and then it does this again. every single day! no codes show on the dash no lights of anything wrong at all. has been doing this for almost a month now. i have almost hit multiple people because of this issue!!! help!!! local chevy dealer and also a local body shop cannot find the issue. i have a 5 year old and i'm terrified to take her anywhere with me and it's our only car and i owe a lot on it. only had it almost 2 years. i need help
While driving down the road the steering wheel wants to stick to the left, then will break free. i took it in to get it checked out thought it might need an alignment or something but the shop said everything was good, alignment and tires were fine, and they had no reason as to why it would be doing that.
When driving the power steering quits working and you can't steer the car. you never know when it will happen, does it without warning. almost impossible to turn the vehicle. electric power steering and i have found hundreds of complaints online from other owners but this vin doesn't have the recall
The car infotainment screen and power steering suddenly and momentarily shut down.i bought the car 3 weeks a go. in the past three weeks the issue happened about a dozen times. when it happens the steering wheel becomes very hard to turn. also the steering wheel cuts the power off to the infotainment screen and the blower fan, if it is jerked left and right quickly when the car is parked. after turtthe car off and back on the problem goes away.
When driving my cars electric system will shut down. radio goes off then lights on the dash go crazy and steering wheel jerks real hard and loss of steering for a few seconds then it all comes back on.
While driving the vehicles electrical system, lights, radio dash start to intermittently go off then come back on. while this is happening the steering suddenly froze up while making a turn into oncoming traffic. this nearly caused a head on collision with oncoming cars. that same night when i pulled up in front of my house the headlights and instrument cluster kept flashing on and off.
Service power steering was displayed on my speedometer display when i started my car up this morning; the temperature was cold. the warning went away after sitting int he car for 2-3 minutes. my steering is a bit shaky at this point. i am taking it to the dealership asap; i have an extended warranty.
While driving the vehicle the car powers down. the radio turns off, lights on dash goes out and power steering locks up. if driven over a speed bump or pothole all electrical componets power down. i was driving and put my signal on, the vehicle shutdown and steering wheel locked until it rebooted itsself. there is no difference on street, highway nor speed. when it looses power there is no way to alert the nearby drivers with hazard lights as everything has been shut off. on going matter, has been to dealer multiple times and different locations
Vehicle was traveling at highway speeds when all power cut out on sept 5, 2018. power restored within 10 seconds. took to dealer on sept. 6. no problem found. on sept. 21 the vehicle lost power 3 separate times all at highway speeds again.
Vehicle looses power causing the traction light to come on, power steering to go out, vehicle becomes hard to steer and eventually goes dead. happens randomly.
I would be driving the car and all the lights on the dashboard would come on and then go off. the steering would pull to the left. a couple of times all the lights on the dashboard would come on and the car would cut off while i'm driving on the road.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle suddenly stopped moving and was unable to change gears to move off the roadway. the failure occurred without warning. an independent mechanic was able to go to the location and serviced the vehicle by replacing the alternator assembly; however, the failures continued. the contact stated that the stability control warning indicator flashed, various other warning indicators and gauges flickered, and the steering wheel became inoperable. once the warning indicators had gone off, the contact was able to maneuver the steering wheel in either direction; however, the failure was getting progressively worse. the contact also stated that the key was unable to be removed from the ignition. the dealer (vaden of beaufort, 103 robert smalls pkwy, beaufort, sc 29906, (843) 525-4100) was contacted to schedule an diagnostic appointment. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
While the vehicle is in motion, radio and other electrics go blank, steering wheel feels locked up but i assume it has lost power steering. this has happened multiple times. it corrects itself in few seconds but once nearly swerved into a car as the wheel would not turn.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while attempting to drive the vehicle, it failed to start. on another occasion, while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled, all the warning indicators illuminated, and the steering wheel seized. the contact was able to coast the vehicle to a parking lot. the vehicle was able to restart an hour later and was driven to the contact's residence. the contact called wallace chevrolet at (888) 350-8421 (located at 3575 se federal hwy, stuart, fl 34994) and was informed to schedule an appointment for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Driving one evening on highway. getting off exit ramp that curves into another highway. car loose power steering while in curve. scared the life out of me. car looses steering again a mile down road while in a turn getting off highway.
I own 2013 chevy malibu with 98k miles on the car. my car started having electrical problems and my radio goes off and black, everything that is connected to my car disconnects, lf i'm about to stop my car looses control over steering, then power comes back and i gain control. i called gm and they told me to take it to the dealer and dealership said that my car isn't under warranty - even though they have been contacted by gm and given specific thing and code to look at. i have been told that my car's problem is low-voltage and to buy new battery or replace batteries related part (not sure). today, i was driving on the highway and merging on another highway and i lost control over the steering while trying to merge (this was horrible experience for me and my friends who were with me on the car). i called gm again and told them that they need to do something about this fault. after careful drive on local street - the car went off while driving and my ac measure become celsius instead of fahrenheit. i had to put the car on parking mode and use the keys again! this was horrible ordeal and needs to be addressed by gm and chevy.
While driving on the highway and city streets my car electrical system cut completely off while engine is still running. it jerks the car to left or right and then cuts back mlm on. can't steer until the power comes back on if i'm driving or parked. this has happened on several occasions. check engine lights comes on then message of engine power reduced. have been in service several times about check engine light coming on and still cant fix the problem. this is dangerous and afraid i will get in an accident soon. something has to be done about this.
While driving, all electronic systems shut off. the engine is still running but the gauges, power steering, traction control, everything. anything electrical shuts off. it's happened on the freeway going 60 mph and on residential streets only going 15 mph.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving at any speed, the power steering ability seized and the vehicle shut down and then restarted. in addition, the service power steering indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to classic lawton chevrolet (8308 nw cache rd, lawton, ok 73505, 580-280-2800) where it was diagnosed that the power steering module needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure recurred and was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
When i was on my way home, my car's warning lights started to flicker, and 'power steering service' and 'charging system' warning lights appeared. my entire dash went completely black and steering wheel became completely hard. the car stayed on, but all the lights went off. after a few seconds, the car shut off. car would not restart, even with a jump. mileage on car was at 110,000 miles. luckily i was on a residential street, so i just pushed the car safely in front of a random house. upon further examination, this appears to be an on going problem. i've found hundreds of other owners with a similar problem on various forums. some are very similar to my problem, while others are more dangerous. below, i have quoted other owners personal stories as well 'the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was taken to the local chevrolet dealer (phil smith chevrolet, 1640 north state rd 7, lauderdale, fl 33313). the dealer reset the power steering module, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 118,000.' 'charging system" engine light keep coming on. all lights come on dash board come on then go dim. car shuts down on you while driving and steering wheel locks up. i almost crash into a light. - richton park, il' 'this is my second report. the vehicle loses power steering and the entire gauge cluster goes dark. almost caused a wreck today. it happened twice today and once yesterday. this is getting out of hand. needs to be recalled immediately. thank you - ravenna, oh' this seems to be an on going problem and needs to be seriously looked at before an accident occurs.
Touch screen goes black, lose sound, randomly lose power while driving, car completely stalls at stop as well as while driving, steering wheel locks while driving going straight or in the middle of turn, all this happens at random times doesn't matter how far and how long, no trigger has been found, dealership can not duplicate the problem. car will lock key in the ignition and will not release for a while and no electricity works. this is a safety hazard and car was released back to me because no issue was found. testing was done and found no issues with my car. this has been going on for a few months
Steering ecu, instrument cluster, and center stack all reset while driving intermittently. these incidence have occurred numberous times and gm does not know the root cause. when an event occurs the driver looses power steering for a brief period of time. this has happened while making left hand turns, on the highway, and while stopped. gm released a technical service bulletin to check ground points on the negative battery cable this does not solve the problem and this is a serious safety concern. i have released production level software for numberous tier one suppliers that have gone into a variety of ecus. to me it seems like all of the body control modules have lost power. when checking car complaints this same behavior has been stated in over 40 reports and all reports state gm was unable to determine the cause. if an investigation has not been launched into this behavior i highly recommend it before the loss of power steering kills someone. http://m.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/malibu/2013/electrical/loss_of_power_while_driving.shtml https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=26cz7qhvxck&feature=youtu.be https://youtu.be/lreeo3e9jya https://youtu.be/kv83c7anskq
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving, the instrument cluster lighting flickered and the vehicle lost power. additionally, the steering wheel was difficult to turn. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to ed rinke chevrolet buick gmc (26125 van dyke, center line, mi 48015, (866) 461-1170) where it was diagnosed that the battery cable needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 8-4683000874. the contact was advised to call the dealer. the failure mileage was 77,494.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the power steering indicator illuminated and the steering wheel inadvertently turned to the left. the contact stated that it was difficult to maneuver the steering wheel to the right as the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that the engine was able to restart after approximately a half hour to one hour. during this time, the steering wheel operated normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (gunn chevrolet, 16550 interstate 35 selma, tx 78154, (210) 599-5000) several times for diagnostic testing, but a failure code could not be located. the dealer also test drove the vehicle and was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 102,127.
Purchased car certified pre-owned. first winter entertainment display and warning lights started to flicker randomly, and car would not reliably start. took to dealership and they were unable to recreate the symptoms. the following winter the entire electrical system began failing upon engaging it while in motion. for example: using the the power windows, engagement of the traction control in slippery weather, using a turn signal, were all capable of shutting down all electrical options in the vehicle including the power steering. nearly caused a couple accidents. the service stabiltrak light would also come intermittently come on. brought to dealership again, they cleared the dash lights and reset a sensor that was showing bad in a diagnostic scan. car ran smoothly for a few months. showed symptoms again over the summer(lights flickering and loss of touch screen momentarily). dealership was unable to recreate again. now this winter the car is completely messed up again, same exact symptoms as last time. power steering loss, full electrical loss while in motion, sometimes randomly, other times as a direct result of engaging with the electrical system as i described before. a aaa worker noticed the burning of electrical cable housing coming from the battery, i pointed this out to the dealership but they don't seem interested in it. based on the consistent complaints about this vehicles electrical system, this car needs to be recalled and gm seriously investigated. they've already had to settle hundreds of death law suits due to this exact issues they claimed was a faulty ignition switch in the cobalt, yet this exact problem exists heavily in other models and the issue continues to be rampant in 'fixed' ignitions in the cobalts. this is a dangerous public health issue, gm needs to be held responsible
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was taken to the local chevrolet dealer (phil smith chevrolet, 1640 north state rd 7, lauderdale, fl 33313). the dealer reset the power steering module, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 118,000.
Fuse caused low voltage power steering going on and off wiyhout the steering service light coming on. the steering became loose. hard to control when driving. i could not get part for over a week.
While the vehicle is in motion the radio screen would flash off and on followed by lose of power steering the car was parked and towed to a local dealership to be inspected
Car shuts off while driving at any speed. touch screen goes black and power steering goes out. it happens more frequent when turning. it is unsafe because if you are driving on a curve it could cause a crash because the steering wheel will not turn. you loose control of the car.
Charging system engine light keep coming on. all lights come on dash board come on then go dim. car shuts down on you while driving and steering wheel locks up. i almost crash into a light.
This is my second complaint considering this issue. loss of power steering, radio goes black, gauge cluster goes black. since my last complaint this has occurred no less than 15 times with two very close accidents. this is becoming a very dangerous vehicle. and i plead with you to open a recall thank you. it has now occurred on both city roads and highway speeds. it seems to get worse when the turn signal is used.
This is my second report. the vehicle loses power steering and the entire gauge cluster goes dark. almost caused a wreck today. it happened twice today and once yesterday. this is getting out of hand. needs to be recalled immediately. thank you
Car is causing the battery to go bad. when the battery goes bad the whole car starts acting up; lose power steering, steering wheel locks up, dash lights flicker until turned off, in dash screen turns off before car dies. after i bought the car three months later my battery went bad (car started acting funny and gradually declined in quality over a week's time) i replaced the battery and now 2 years later the battery is bad again. this is a dangerous car to be in as the whole car dies while driving and the steering wheel locks up on the highway. this happens while driving. it has happened on the highway, interstate, parking lot and city street. two different batteries should not go bad before there life time. i believe this has something to do with the car itself and also the car should not be designed for the steering wheel to lock up and remain solely on the normal battery.
Car radio turns to black along with dashboard cluster display, steering may or may not work depending on the severity of the computer restart. in severe restarts the radio is neither on nor are any climate control options. the problem seems to occur during low acceleration or at idle.
While driving my chevrolet 2013 malibu ltz my stabiltrack light and service power steering pump light came on my dash immediately afterwards when driving at low speeds any where from zero to thirty miles per hour the car will randomly lose engine power and will stall but the electrical system will stay on but the head lights go out and the power steering will go out making the vehicle hard to turn. the car dies just about every time i am either accelerating from 0 mph to any low speed unless i slam on the gas pedal. in bumper to bumper traffic im restarting my malibu every 3 seconds after it dies. it's is so dangerous if i have to turn and their is oncoming traffic cause the car could just die in the middle of the turn and be smashed by oncoming traffic. this happens on the street on the highway anywhere im driving . car was taken to dealership where they held it for 2 weeks and said it was a oil pump solenoid valve being stuck. as soon as i drove off the lot i didnt even get around the corner and the car died at a low speed and the stability light came on along with the power steeri my pump and check engine light. vehicle has to been taken in several times for cam shaft position sensor failure also. car failures have been common since the date i purchased this vehicle
While driving on the highway the power steering went out (everything blinked off for a couple of seconds and then back on) pulling the car to the left suddenly and my car went into the median and hit a tree. when the power car came back on it said service power steering and then service stabili trac. there was significant damage to the front of my vehicle.
