Problems with 2010 Chevrolet Malibu SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 77 742 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

When i start driving my car down the street the brake lights come on. if i tap the peddle the lights will go off for about 2 seconds the come back on again and stay on. when i touch the brakes toslow down they go off and do not come on until i apply full pressure to them. the traction service lights comes on sporadically have taken this in to get it fixed and they cant fix it because they do not have a recall notice on it. what am i to do. this is a serious problem to me. *tr

I called gm and was told that my car was included on the recent recall issued may 14, however there are no parts available yet to fix. i was also made aware that this recall fix would only fix the brake lamps and that the other issues i.e cruise control, electronic stability control, and traction control are not a part this recall. i am issuing another complaint due to reading many other complaints of this same issue and that need to be addressed by gm. this is a potential dangerous issue that can cause serious injury, not to mention with the brake lamps staying illuminated and turn off when the pedal is pressed currently. there should be an immediate recall since the issues included in the recent recall will not be addressed and has made me a dissatisfied gm owner. i hope the nhtsa will further investigate complaints and pressure gm to completely fix these defects immediately. *tr

While car is on. brake lights work in reverse. when break pedal is pushed, the brake lights go out. when pedal is not engaged, the brake lights are on. (works in reverse). service traction, ecs waring comes on. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the brake lights illuminated when the brakes were not being engaged and turned off when they were. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the tpn system needed to be reset. the repairs were made but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 69,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. updated 8/22/14*cn updated 08/23/2017*ct

All in one weekend (while out of town) first the vehicle would not respond to cruise control commands (engage or disengage) if engaged through the steering column controls. the service esc light keeps coming off and on at random while either sitting or driving. the esc tracking is turned off. brake lights will illuminate randomly when my foot is not on the brakes. tapping the brakes gets the light to turn off, but it turns on again 5-6 seconds later. when i put my foot on the brake to slow down or tap the brake the light does not come on. the brake lights are only coming on when i'm at a complete hard stop. this is extremely dangerous as i have over a 40 minute commute into the city each day. also, the seatbelt light and beeping is on even when my seatbelt is secured. i cannot afford to have these items replace, and i have 4 years to pay on this car! there is something seriously wrong with these items in my car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that excessive force was applied to the brake pedal in order to shift out of park and into drive. the contact mentioned that the service traction control and the ecs warning light illuminated. in addition, the contact stated that the rear brake lights illuminated when the brake pedal was not applied and when the brake pedal was applied the rear brake light failed illuminate. the failure occurred on several occasions. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake module needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 46,700. the vin was not available.

For the 2014 14v252000 recall, we believe the problem has happened again. we are getting it fixed again at our expense. sally boyle from the il attorney general's office talked at length with the gm counsel today and gm stated that il has no jurisdiction over them, just the nhtsa.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. when the brake pedal was depressed, the tail lamp failed to illuminate. the traction control warning indicator illuminated. ourisman chevrolet of bowie (16610 governors bridge rd, bowie, md) repaired the vehicle per nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000(service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control); however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the brake light switch was replaced; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

So about 2 months ago the service traction light came on briefly and didn't come back on for a while. then about 2 weeks ago it started going off almost everytime i drove. i brought it to the dealership that i bought it in kannapolis, nc called classic chevrolet on 5/3/14. they said i could pay 98.00 to get it hooked up to the computer reader, but the light was off so i decided i didn't really have 98.00 to waste. as it had been hooked up to a code reader when the light was off before and didn't read anything. there is an option to turn off the traction control so i was driving with it off. we went to michigan on 5/8/14 it was driving fine. light never came on. when we were in michigan it started going on again, again driving with the traction control off. it was hooked up to a computer and no codes came up and light goes off when you turn it off and never came back on our whole way home. nothing felt or sounded different with the driving. driving fine to drop off our son at practice this morning 5/17/14, turned on car to go pick him up and couldn't reverse, but would go forward. i had my husband and his brother push us out of the driveway and it was driving fine for the first 3 blocks, then started to chug and wouldn't shift correctly leaving a stop light. i turned around on a circle drive. we live on a culdesac so i pulled ahead of our house, so we could push it back in the drive way. when my husband came back out it was like locked, we couldn't push it in reverse. then it wouldn't go forward. my husband unhooked the battery and was able to reverse with struggle and pull into the driveway with struggle. during all of this, the brakes have been illuminating when not being pushed and sometime they don't even work. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that his brake lights would illuminate when the brakes were not engaged and shut off when applying the brakes. the esc off warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and the traction in the vehicle malfunctioned. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 28,000. the current mileage was 50,000.

Car will alarm with "service escape" and "service traction" --- brake lights will then work opposite of what they should. when brakes are not being pressed they are lit but when brakes are pressed brake lights do not work. happens intermittently but for several days at a time. have also had cruise control engage itself while driving down interstate at approx 70 mph-- cruise control came on and sped the car up without it being set -- disengaged when brakes pressed. *tr

Tl * the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel seized and the brakes engaged. the contact mentioned that the esc and the abs warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. dr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated while driving 40 mph attempting to avoid crashing into another vehicle, the brakes were engaged but failed to stop the vehicle. as a result, the contact crashed into the rear of the second vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. the front passenger sustained a fractured knee. a police report was filed. neither the manufacturer nor the dealer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 27,000.

Cruise control fails to engage or even indicate that it is on when the cruise control button and set - buttons are applied. the upper rear brake lights fail to illuminate when the brakes are applied sometimes. *tr

Brake lights come on when not pressing the brakes. cruise control turns off without tapping the brakes, traction control says it needs to be serviced . i cycle power to the ignition switch and the problem goes away for a few minutes then comes back on. this can cause an accident as the lights turn off when the brake pedal is depressed . *tr

While driving down the highway, i noticed my brake lights were on. the brakes were not pressed, nor was the parking brake on. when i would depress my brakes the lights would go off. it seemed as if the brakes were working in reverse. the car behind me almost rear ended me because they did not know i was putting on my brakes. also the service traction/esc light was flashing on my dashboard and the cruise control would not work. *tr

Intermittent problem, occurring at least five times since date above. one or more of the following conditions noted: 1. cruise control fails to engage, or stops engaging. indicator light on (/off wheel toggle switch), but no engage. 2. "service esc" and alternating "traction control" warning with alarm tone on speedo cluster. orange warning triangle illuminated, also. 3. brake lights constant on, with no foot on brake pedal. or, brake lights can go off when brakes are applied. confusing, possibly dangerous, to drivers immediately following. once aware of this, fashioned a reflector fitting just behind the rear top mount brake light that reflects into my rear-view mirror. these problems can clear after car is stopped for a time (over 45 minutes) and may not appear again for another unknown interval. already replaced (march 31, 2014) a brake position sensor switch ($186.60 - my cost) at local selling chevrolet dealership. this did nothing to fix the problem and when asked, dealer claimed no knowledge of any tsbs or of others having issues similar. *tr

On this date i was attempting to depart on vacation. i got in my car which was parked in my garage and the engine would not crank. it was in park. i instructed my wife to call aaa. while she was gone i opened the door to try again and the car started to roll down the driveway. foolishly i got behind the car to stop it and got sandwiched between my car and the neighbors. i broke both my legs, had surgery and was hospitalized for a month and am having therapy and cannot walk or work. i reported this to gm in livonia michigan as instructed by my dealership and have heard nothing. since then twice the car has been in park with the engine off and has started to roll backward. since i cannot work and could not pay my bills i have had to file for bankruptcy. i had the car checked by the dealership and they said it was fine. *js

First occurrence i was driving down the road and my warning lights came on for esc off, service traction control, service esc at 50 mph. at first it would only come on once every couple weeks but now it comes on almost every time i drive it. it varies (speed doesn't matter) whether or not going down the highway or stopping in a driveway when it comes on but warning lights will come on when you touch the brakes. i also observed that the brake lights stay on while going down the road (when its dark outside) but when you apply the brakes the brake lights go off. i feel this could be dangerous if someone is following behind you and thinks that you have let off the brakes but you are actually slowing down. i don't think that they have an apparent fix for this issue as i see several reports from vehicles ranging from 2008 to 2012 online complaining about this same issue. it is intermittent. when you turn the car off after this occurs the lights will go off. sometimes only for a short period other times for a week weeks before it comes on again. *tr

Brake lights stay on even when pedal is not pushed. when pedal is pressed lights will flash off, brake lights basically working in reverse. i have to turn the car off for the lights to shut off. almost was rear ended this morning due to brake lights not working properly. *tr

Driving down the highway and the cruise stopped working. shortly after that happened the traction control indicator and abs light came on. a message appeared to have those items serviced. this lasted for the remainder of my 20 minute drive. i started the vehicle back up after sitting for several hours and the lights were off and no message. this happened 4 more times until december. i did not notice that the brake lights stayed on until i was driving at night. i pressed the brake pedal and the brake lights would go out. the brake lights would come back on shortly after i depressed the brake pedal. there were times when just the cruise control would stop working and the brake lights worked incorrectly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the cruise control failed to engage and the brake lights failed to operate intermittently. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 58,000. the current mileage was 58,200. updated 11/13/13*lj according to the invoice, the brake lights illuminated when they were not needed and did not illuminate when the brake was applied. the dealer replaced the brake pedal position sensor. updated 11/14/13

8/29/2014 cruise control was not working on car along with traction control and abs warring lights going off. car was taken to a gm dealership to be looked at was told that rear speed sensors were not working and paid 200 dollars for a repair. didn't even make it home and the same problem started happening along with brake lights that will not go off. car was taken back to the dealership and this time they found frayed wire and fixed it for no charge. this still did not fix the issue. was taken to another dealership charged a dx fee to tell me it was the bcm. finally a recall was issued and when the part came in my care was taken in for the recall repair and this still did not fix the issue. i am paying for a care that i cant even drive. the brake lights will not go off and gm says that i can bring it in if its not from the recall i will have to pay another fee to have a dx done on it. just really aggravated never again will i buy a gm product. asked what i was supposed to do in the event of a crash resulting from others not able to see if i am stopping and was advised that gm would then be responsible...updated 01/06/15 *bf *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that after leaving a car wash and applying the brakes, the vehicle would not stop while driving 15 mph. the contact crashed into another vehicle. the vehicle was destroyed. the contact was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash however, suffered a back injury and transported to the emergency room. a police report was not filed. the contact did not call the manufacturer. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test however, the dealer stated that they could not find a issue with the braking system. the failure mileage was 31,000. updated 09/30/13*lj

After the cruise control stopped working on my malibu, i noticed that the brake lights were staying on while driving. the brake lights are on while driving normally, then when the brake peddle is pressed lightly the lights turn off. after the peddle is depressed quite a bit (while braking for stopping or to make a sharp turn) the brake lights will turn back on. after releasing the brakes all the way, the lights will turn off and then back on again a few seconds later. every time the brake lights turn on, the cruise control stops working. *tr

Takata recall-my air bag light has been on since shortly after i purchased the vehicle in aug. 2011. i am terrified if i am in an accident they won't deploy and myself or a passenger may be seriously injured. my son and i were coming back home from denver and my car started acting strange like it was going to die and it sure did while we were almost out of eisenhower tunnel on the west end, we were almost rear ended by an 18 wheeler! thank god he made it around us safely and no accident occurred. i am sure i reported this already shortly after it happened and never received a response in any shape or form. i was able to get the car started after about ten minutes and drove home without any further problems, was shaking like a leaf all the way....my son too. i have also had problems with the car shimmering when i apply the brake at 55-60 mph and it isn't just a little its sever and doesn't stop until i get back under that speed, i am afraid of loosing control. i do want to say i am very disappointed in the car, i bought it because i believed it would be a great vehicle to own and i was proud to drive it....the chevrolet emblem meant something to me. i doubt i would ever buy another one, i would be afraid to! it is so sad that the quality of products and the pride in the manufacturing of them has taken a back seat to profit.....the recalls in this country are ridiculous! can't recall specifc date as to tunnel incident, its been a few years back, the other two problems have been happening since i purchased the vehicle in 2011

I went to leave one morning and my car would not go into gear. only when i pressed the brake pedal completely to the floor would it finally move into drive. after driving it a day or two my service traction and my service esc lights have been coming on since july. and now today my cruise control stopped working an also my brake lights are not working correctly. when the car is in park they are off and will not come on. when the car is in drive they are on constantly. *tr

While driving vehicle, the brake lights will illuminate without pressing the brake pedal. once the brake pedal is pressed, the brake lights go out and will come back on approximately 5 seconds later. in an emergency stop, the driver behind me will not have warning that there is an emergency stop. additionally, the cruise control will turn off as the system believes the brakes are being applied when they are not. this will happen without warning while driving on the highway. *tr

Brake lights remain on while driving, turn off momentarily but then turn back on. service traction control notice appeared immediately after. *tr

Coming to a stop on an off ramp, brakes failed couldn't stop. (it had been raining). 2nd incident on june 26, 2013, going down highway and service traction light with sec light came on and car was powering down and steering was difficult. called landmark service center in taylorville, illinois they told me to turn the car off, then restart (of course lights went out) and drive it to the nearest gm garage. (i was out of town at the time). when i arrived at the location they put it on the computer and of course nothing showed up because the lights were not on. on wednesday i took may car to landmark in taylorville to have the oil changed and to see if they could check on the problem. and true to form the computer showed nothing because the lights were no on. but was told if this happened again to go to the nearest service center and don't turn the car off. i've had this experience and it is very dangerous when in traffic. and am scared to drive the car out of town. i like my car and want to keep it but if the problem is not fixed someone may get hurt. but before that happens i will trade the car and i assure you that i will not by another gm product and will tell everyone of the problems i had. *tr

Brake lamps intermittently flash or stay on without the brakes being applied and the cruise control disengages. the warning lights for electric stability control fault and traction control also display. *tr

Vehicle brake lights illuminate without applying the brakes. cruise control fails to activate or disengages unexpectedly. brake lights fail to illuminate while applying the brakes until approximately 2 seconds after applying the brakes. *tr

The brake light comes on when the brake pedal is not being pushed. it doesn't matter if the car is sitting in park or being driven on the highway, the brake light stays on when the pedal is not pushed. when the brake pedal is pushed, the brake light goes off. *tr

Brake light stays on or dosen't go on when brakes are applied. cruise control intermittent

I have taken my car to the gm dealer three times in the past year. each time they stated that they had repaired the "brake signal" and that was the problem. however, even with the current recalls for the same problem, when i called gm dealer last week, they stated that the "charges would be at least $150 to connect to the computer and run diagnostics". well, since i have already spent $500 for the last 3 visits, where they did not listen to me and fixed something was not torn up, why would i waste money on the same issue. there is a recall.. gm states that the recall is not for my specific vehicle, although the problems i have had for one year are the same problems they are recalling the 2010 chev malibu for at this time. supposedly, they will recall mine later.. i guess i just wait and hope i do not have a wreck until then. driving along the highway at any speed, the car will suddenly feel as if i have pressed the brake pedal and pumped it. the esc and service traction lights then come on. the brake lights then come on when i do not have the brake pedal pushed. when i do press the brake pedal the brake light goes off. i have had to have my brakes changed several times since this began. it also uses more gas since my car thinks i am riding my brakes and pressing the gas also. *tr

My rear brake light comes on for no reason when i am driving. *tr

The brake lights will go on for no reason while i am pressing the gas and then when i press the brake, they will shut off. as well as when i turn on the hazards, my traction light will switch on and when i turn them off the light stays on saying "service traction" and then the left tail light blinker shorts out and pretends like it is going out and will blink rapidly. then when the brake light issue is happening my cruise control will be faulty. there is a short or something happening with the wiring, it has been bad for a while now. i haven't gotten around to actually doing anything about it until i read this: [xxx] *tr parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while depressing the brakes, the brake lights failed to illuminate and erroneously illuminated when the brakes were not depressed. the vehicle was driven to a dealer where it was found that the brake switch failed. the contact also stated that the traction control warning light erroneously illuminated. the vehicle was repaired. the failure recurred several times after the repair. the manufacturer was not contacted about the issue. the failure mileage was 42,000 and the current mileage was 43,000. the vin was not available.

The rack and pinion on drivers side end rattles at slow speed. i have tried 3 different brand front brakes and all have squeaked, the transmission cooler line started leaking.the car has 69,000 on it as of now 1/26/2013. dealer want fix any of the problem under the drive train warranty. also has cold start engine knock. *tr

This car has had a history of malfunctioning brake lights, esc and traction control system failures over the past year. the car has been in two different dealerships numerous times without repairing the root cause. in may the car was rear ended causing significant damage. the failure of the brake lights to operate correctly may have been a factor. the brake lights operate sporadically. the car is not currently safe to drive after spending last week at a dealership service department. being a licensed professional engineer it is my opinion that there are several engineering design deficiencies that are not addressed by the repair procedures listed within the service manual. i recommend that these cars be recalled as a car with no known problem can develop this problem without warning placing the driver in harms way. an 8d corrective action request would require a problem containment of issuing a recall immediately of any vehicle that has experienced this problem. *tr

1. difficulty putting car in gear need to put excessive brake pressure to change gears 2. "service esc" "service traction" light flash daily 3. brake lights are often engaged and or won't engage 4. cruise control won't engage effectively all of these things happen while driving and in a parked position

Brake light illuminate without pressing the brake pedal. when brake pedal is pressed then lights go off for a brief moment then go back on. while accelerating brake lights come on and stay on. i have nearly had several close encounters. i have had this issue twice already. first time the dealer repaired it and that lasted a year. it recurred and i have taken it to an independent mechanic in which he replaced the brake pedal sensor and had it diagnosed. i am still having this occurrence. this is absolutely ridiculous to have this recurring problem. every time they want a fee plus repair charge. they are making money both by car payment and repairs. what the hell??? frustrated with chevrolet. *tr

I've had my car in the warranty repair shop 6 times in the last 3 months. first occurrence i was driving down the road and my warning lights came on for esc off, service traction control, service esc at 20 mph. they've replaced 4 parts on my car and today the same lights service traction control and service esc have come on once again. it varies (speed doesn't matter) whether or not going down the highway or stopping in a driveway when it comes on but warning lights will come on when you touch the brakes. i also observed that the brake lights stay on while going down the road (when its dark outside) but when you apply the brakes the brake lights go off. i feel this could be dangerous if someone is following behind you and thinks that you have let off the brakes but you are actually slowing down. i don't think that they have an apparent fix for this issue as i see several reports from vehicles ranging from 2008 to 2012 online complaining about this same issue. i am to take my car back again for service next week to hopefully get it repaired but i am not so sure they are going to find the problem after already having it in there so many times for the same issue. it is intermittant. when you turn the car off after this occurs the lights will go off. sometimes only for a short period other times for a week to 3 weeks before it comes on again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated the brake light illuminated when the brake pedal was not depressed and caused the brake to delay when the brake pedal was engaged. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 73,000.

I own a 2010 chevy malibu and have had issues with my brake lights coming on when i am not applying the brake. i took my car in and had the brake light switch replaced and the issue is still happening. this is a huge safety issue when my brake lights come on without me applying the brake. in addition, there are time the lights do not come on when i apply the brake. *tr

Defective door latches. both driver side front and back door problems since i purchased my 2010 chevrolet malibu back in 2012. driver door would not open or not shut. contacted gm twice and no assistance from gm. i purchased a aftermarket door latch and replaced the driver door latch in jan 2018 and have no more problem since. driver back door i have not been able to open since 2015 and because the back door wont open, there is no way to replace the latch. if a fire or accident happens there is no exit from drivers side back door. without warning on a 7 year old vehicle, the transmission failed in aug 2017 136000 miles. expensive replacement.

There are three issues that appear to be related: 1) brake lights come on when brake pedal is not being depressed, and stays on, and/or does not come on when brake pedal depressed. 2)"service traction" and "service esc" warnings come on and remain on. 3) cruise control stops working. you can have one, two or all three of these events happening at the same time. any of the three can occur first. they can occur each time the car is driven for some weeks, then not occur at all for a few days or occasionally even weeks. can occur after driving for a few minutes, sometimes after an hour or more of driving. seems to happen in all kinds of weather conditions, hot, cold, wet or dry. has been happening intermittently for over a year now, and now seems to happen more often and for longer periods of time than when first began. *tr

Error 1. warning errors on dashboard state service esc, service traction; noticed just after oct 2011 purchase. brake position sensor replaced. problem still occurs on and off to this day (april 2014). two services have not fixed this problem. error 2. cruise control would stop working on it's own while at hwy speeds; noticed dec 2011. cruise currently (april 2014) will not engage at any speed. error 3. brake lights will turn on without pedal depression at any speed and conversely when brake pedal is depressed brake lights will turn off; noticed apr 2012. problem still occurring on and off today (april 2014) . the cruise control and brake light issues are huge safety concerns and with more than 20 almost identical complaints documented and at least one crash, why is nothing being done? *tr
